Haha! Al Murray! I have saved a couple of old knackered chisels by using the honing guide and a belt sander. Turn the sander on its back, set a low speed, use a worn or high grit belt and just hold the chisel and guide down on the belt. Don't let it get too hot though. Squareness is just by eye but if the wheel on the guide is flat on the belt, it should be square. If it looks square it's square enough for 99% of jobs! Make a template block for it at this stage, then go to work on your Whetstone. I'll try and post another vid tomorrow explaining in more detail.
Hi Karpetcabin, the actual dimensions of the guide are not important, only that it sets the chisel in the honing guide so that the bevel lies flat on the whetstone. Let me know if a video of how to set up the block would be helpful.

My Irwin honing guide left an uneven grind on my chisels, I think that the jaws that hold the chisel isn’t square, I am going to file the edges and make them as square as I can. I’m disappointed at this point with their product, maybe a more precise machined guide would be better.
I'm sorry to hear that. Before filing, just check that that really is the problem. It's quite easy to apply more pressure to one side of the chisel than the other when grinding. I had a similar experience way back, and once you know it's simple to correct with a bit if extra pressure on the other side. once you've created the muscle memory for an even job, it'll be right every time. Of course it could be your guide that is faulty. Irwin generally make good stuff, but their quality control probably isn't as good as, say, trend, hence the difference in price. Good luck!
Going forward will I need to grind the primary bevel again? I can't afford a grindstone. Or can I do this step on the same stones I use to sharpen? Thanks
I've switched to one like this now. rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F153113382404 So a 200 grit is as coarse as you'll ever need really. You can do it on any stone, it'll just take a lot longer on a higher grit! For a little tune up between jobs, the highest grit you have is fine, unless the blade is damaged. I think that answers your question, let me know if not!

To be fair,the purists' are always the worst ! don't do it like that,do it like this ! as long as they are at the right angle and are sharp,you won't have a problem,these things are made to help us and make life easier,so don't knock it.

the thing to remember is the grinding angle is 25 degrees and the sharpening angle is 30 because its the perfect angle for cutting wood

Also, yes, the primary bevel is always ground during sharpening, as well as the face. The micro bevel is just gently done at the very end.
