"Boreas"- Winne Clement - Kaval solo (modified Romanian Caval flute)

- This solo piece for Kaval flute was recorded live in a chapel in Ghent-Belgium by my good friend Onno.
It took me a while to be able to play this solo composition because it is played with circular breathing troughout the whole piece. It was quite a technical challenge to be comfortable in it.

I am playing a hybrid modified Moldavian Kaval flute, it has two extra playing holes one in the front and one in the back for more playing options.
I made the kaval completely by hand from Elderberry wood a couple of years ago.
I really like to explore the possibilities of this ancient flute that comes from a Folk tradition and take it a step further.
The circular breathing technique and controll over the airpressure, in combination with the natural reverb, echo and great acoustics in the chapel enable me to reach an almost digital-synth sound.
New sounds for an old instrument!
For sure you could say this composition was inspired by Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Techno Music.

This piece reminds me of a cloud of thunder. Awe-inspiring, wild, yet strangely serene. Most of all, it sounds really, really good!!!!

Yeah, music that is made by working with sound/feel rather than a strict focus on notes/theory is a nice reprieve from the crap on the radio. Real music is so rare... even many of the popular and skilled musicians on UA-cam are making their names on technical transpositions of popular songs rather than really getting something new/deep. I'm happy to hear stuff like this. Very. Thank you.

Winnie I can't get over this sound mate . Is it the measurement or the wood or Fipple or the whole lot in its equation that makes this incredible overtone situation going on along with all that plug in distortion sound it's incredible

the overtone techniques are quite hard, but combining it with circular breathing is some George Makinto type messing around with flute :)

Is backpressure big enough to use circular breathing?
I play a little bit the Romanian caval, but I cant understand how do you play it using circle breathing . Anyways, great playing like usual !
the technique is a little different compared to other wind instruments with more backpressure, but its not that hard to learn!
