**incoherent italian-sounding gibberish** (that’s what the subs say)
The moment I read "Look at my feet look down" part I knew they gonna pick Opera since RM's lyrics is always like THAT
honestly they should do opera versus rm's lyrics because that man is a poet (ofc the other members too but that was his dream once)
exactly
even classical musicians appreciated his poetic lyrics lol

Yeah, I always watch with subtitles on because I'm hard of hearing. This caused me to laugh so much!
funny thing is when i first started listening to kpop and started looking at translations of the lyrics i was extremely blown away by how poetic it is, and even in the original language theyre that poetic. korean music in general has a very poetic vibe, like ballads that are super SUPER poetic and well made. In korea lyricists are also pretty well known like publically and they often value lyrcism so that might be why
Kim Hongjoooong!! Love seeing an Atiny here
could be because it's easier to rhyme in korean than in english
@@imagiguard yeah and sometimes the words sound similar (?) like it allows to play on the words. I think my favorite Korean lyricist has to be namjoon. He’s just so nuanced in his words and his usage and his ability to deliver feelings and emotions in beautiful lyrics is just something so wonderful for me
@@imagiguard yeah i think thats very true, also the fact that the language allows them to play with words and sounds easily, AND with the advantage of using english in their songs as well. I could say so many more good things about it- but either way, the lyrics and the symbolism of korean music is a huge part, if not the main reason, why i love it so much and got into it in the first place
0:01 what piece is this anyone knows?
The reason why it is hard to tell is because opera WAS the pop songs of its time.

Elf rise!

Honestly when eddy said "what's JB sorry again" I immediately sang super junior's sorry 😂
So here's how I guessed. I'm an English/ling-linguistics student who's done some style analysis. I'm no professional and I rarely listen to both genres, but here are the differences I spotted besides rhymes (listed in order of the songs)! Long comment warning too.
1. If it's not not a full-stop or comma, it's probably opera (translations do be like that I guess). And you rarely see semicolons in modern day lyrics anyway
2. 'Fits so good' is technically grammatically wrong but is used a lot more now -- and only recently. If it were opera/a translation aka from way back, it would've probably been 'fits so well' (grammatically correct)
3. Rose-coloured' kinda gives it away. This is obviously pop since 'rose-(insert word)' is a popular collocate (two-word combination). As in, rose coloured/rose tinted would be a more popular combination now than in the past, where idk rose petals would be more common
4. I really don't have much to say about this one. Only that you rarely blatantly see the words 'I love you' in lyrics nowadays guess, so opera
5. Not much here too; only that religious allusions/referenced ('from heaven') are very rare in modern pop for very obvious reasons
6. Again, semicolons give it away, but also 'their'. It's not used much in modern pop ('I', 'you', 'we' are more common). You also don't hear 'praise' in pop much
7. The syntax/sentence structure makes it clear it's a translation. But I ruled it from being non-English pop because it seems more first person narrative-esque which you don't get much in pop
8. Repetition (anaphora I think of 'was') gives it away. I think this was what Brett and Eddy were referring to as 'it sounds very pop'. You get crazy lot of repetition because that's the only figurative language you can use in pop-I mean... because it makes stuff catchier and more memorable (and that's what pop's about-I MEAN...)
9. This is clearly translated and there are no fancy punctuation, so... opera I guess? (Also 'while I force myself to hide my tears' just sounds very pop. Plus the sentence structure
10. Again, biblical reference so opera. 'Here' is probably heaven
Another thing that all these share in common: you can usually tell based on how the stanzas/lines are written. Operas are written more like normal sentences (hence all the semicolons to connect ideas/stanzas). In pop, it's all line breaks. And tbh I barely looked at rhymes when guessing these lol. Didn't get everything right the first time too; got 1-2 mistakes?
Now that you've wasted all your time to read this, it's time to go practice now.
So cool
VENTO lmao thanks
"it's time to go practice now". Practice Ling-linguistics, or practice music? :')

For the Korean, I personally find Koreans are a lot more ‘poetic’ even in everyday life. Idk about other Koreans but in my family and even the other Koreans in our area, we use a lot of phrases that would sound really lyrical and out of place if they were to be translated to English, but bc we use them so often it’s normal to us. like the example subtitler-san provided, it’s not really poetic to Koreans but compared to American pop songs I feel like it is.
Shinee ring ding dong tho...
@@lisak6142 I mean where's also Kendric Lamar and lil pump in American hip hop if we are going to stereotype genres
It also has to do with tenses, too. You don't really sing in conversational tenses. There's a huge difference between the way Koreans talk vs. the way they write lyrics. I think it adds to the poetry of it.

Should've gone with non-English pop
@@srehh5529 Yeah if they did more non-English ones I would have been stumped for sure.
I'm here with an unusual opinion. I'd love them to check out rock lyrics in comparison. Not some cheesy songs about girls which are obviously in every genre but things like Queen's dozens of songs (ex. Lily of the Valley, White Queen, My Fairy King), Pink Floyd especially some like High Hopes, Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven or Black Sabbath's - I love how heavy sound can deliver very important socially or politically messages (children of the grave, war pigs etc). Actually I'd like them to react to rock overall, I'd like to see them judge Bohemian Rhapsody (which by the definition is actually a rhapsody and I'd absolutely not critic their opinion) or some other complex songs which are massive hits (in the genre I guess). I'm a big sucker for rock because it's very diversed (the good old rock'n'roll, I don't really know how it's now but I guess for example 6-10 min songs are not exactly popular). Wow, I've said it.
What about symphonic metal? Or years before that, Deep Purple has a literal concerto with an orchestra (this is what happens when you have a classical pianist in your rock band)
@@imagiguard Oh yeah, the old songs are quite often 'covered' by orchestras, as my grandpa mentioned not long ago, because they are a suitable material. I also like Electric Light Orchestra for actually using orchestra in their songs. The old stuff, tough...

Those translations of K-POP lyrics are so poetic, and as Korean I don't feel so much with the original lyrics
love the opera related content btw
날 닮은 그림자 is not poetic, but it has two different meanings to it. "The shadow that resembles me" could also mean "I am like my own shadow"
i think 날 닮은 그림자 is poetic enough. it could mean that "someone else's shadow that resembles me" which could relate to common human conditions, or "looking at self's shadow and think about oneself" this could relate to self-meditation. it could also mean a shadow that mimics onself. so if you define being "poetic" as having many different possibilities of interpretation in minimal words, yes it is a poetic phrase. if the lyric was "my shadow" 내 그림자 or "your shadow" 네 그림자 it wouldn' t be as poetic as "shadow resembling me" 날 닮은 그림자.
윤동주의 서시가 명시의 대표로 손꼽히는 이유를 생각해보면 "날 닮은 그림자"도 가요 가사로서 충분히 시적입니다. ^^
