She especially doesn't mind when I try to sew heavy pack fabric or webbing... That comment made my day.
My mother is a lifelong professional seamstress, so I kinda chuckled at it too.
Returning to caving after a 15 year hiatus, I have found your videos to be both educational and inspirational. Thank you for taking taking the time to make them.
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching and welcome back to caving. I took almost 15 years off myself.
@@DerekBristol good morning Mr. Derek! Would love for you to make a video on the cave suits! Having a hard time choosing one!
Want to get back into caving/climbing too after a brief stint in college, I'm 37, so I feel like I'm almost too old.
That room makes me so happy
That was a great line, that your wife doesn't mind you using her precision sewing machines on your thick caving gear. Nice humor.
"helps maximise my productivity" (and avoid divorce). Noting, I turn around and behind me and there are krabs and ropes all hanging off a (single) skyhook placed on a door frame in the lounge room, and two caving lights still sitting on the bedroom floor in front of the wardrobes not in the basement! Whoops! I had better remove that before my other half appears! Your caving storage "area" is fantastic and reflects your meticulousness and clarity of your video productions, plus editing kills. Thanks for showing, it's great!
As the caving club of university of ankara these are equipments that we cant even see in our dreams. After 15 years of caving our club hopes to get a drill this week. Really nice video Derek
and we will gladly accept your beyond repair bags :D
Inspired to get my gear better organized. Thanks again Derek.
Spent the last 5 hours building my new gear shelves. Turns out I may need more descenders....
I never been caving been this gear storage is very well organized and I like how everything is ready at a moment’s notice. This has some Good inspirational ideas I’ll be taking away from this! Thanks for posting this!
Hello Derek, I didn't know that you have a twin brother! We need to watch your making off video to understand your new video techniques, amazing fixtures. And congrats to basement "cave man lounge " improvement .
PMI! yeah man! I was using their ropes in Oz like over 30 years ago almost not long after they stared making caving rope LOL. They were like steel cable if i remember correctly.
I really enjoy all your videos, it nice to see clearly very knowledgeable and competent caves talking about caving.
I sometimes just come back to look at your amazing store though, I am very jealous of it! I have just moved how and upgraded to a 4'x4' walk in closet, a full 9' tall though and it's very luxurious compared to what I have been used to.
Thank God, this is actually a good gear tour. It lets the viewer know why you have those gear without babbling on for 30 mins.
Most gear tours babble on for half an hour about nothing.
Dang, I cave, climb, do canyoneering - but your amount of gear and organization blows mine away hands down. 👍👍
I think I need to put togeher a set up like yourself, it would make finding the right gear much easier! Also I just started some surveying today with a disto and topodroid and your videos were very helpful, thank you!
You're welcome!
I have recently gotten into caving with a buddy and was a long time dream. I want to work on documenting and mapping I hope someday I have a fraction of the gear you do (aka I'll take you donations haha). Great video, and excellent organization!
Love the ending, center stage that red ascender, that's a pretty old model no?
Wow this is some next level organization. I’m not sure I’ll ever get there 😂 definitely goals though!
And I thought I was OCD. lol great set up! I know who to call to help push leads!👍
wow. nice storage room. I'm interested in the big wall climbing that you have done and plan on doing in the future. Wasn't expecting to see that much climbing gear in your storage space. The organization is great, looks like that would be a great help with efficient packing for upcoming trips. I need to come up with a hanging wall system for my climbing gear as the way I'm keeping things currently is less than ideal.
This is super cool would love to see an in depth long-form video where you talk about the gear a little more
I have a number of caving gear tutorials and reviews. Most of that information and links to the videos can be found here: www.derekbristol.com/gear-overview
Nice storage, hope I have 1..a very organized storage room..
Nice arsenal, Derek.
Your wife especially doesn't mind you sewing heavy duty webbing and fabric with her sewing machines -
Aha :-)
She's extremely tolerant, but tolerance has its limits.
I find the video very useful and inspiring. Thanks
Pierre Excellent!
Gear topics are the best! You can make more videos about advanced caving techniques like aid climbing or rope rescue :) Also, I would like to see video about anchoring rope in unusual sytuations. Great channel!
My general video making priority is: 1. cave trips, 2. tutorials, 3. gear reviews. I maintain a video project list that has more than 50 ideas. Much of what you've mentioned is on that list. I'm not an expert in cave or rope rescue, but maybe I'll collaborate with someone who is... and thanks for watching!
Did u make a review on the AV suit? I reviewed a new one i bought recently but now i noticed after only several underground trips, some of the inner coating is starting to wear.I also think i will modify it and seam seal with urethane wetsuit glue. The outer material though is very abrasion resistant. I know there are diff models available and bought the cheaper one. Normally, in a wet cave if not below 10C in the entrance waters, I'd just wear a surfing steamer over light thermals and good to go or entrance waters close to 4C a 5mm neoprene suit over thermals for >20 hour trips (I get cold LOL).
Es asombroso todo el equipo que tienes, estas muy bien armado
Wow. Amazing setup and interesting to know what gear you guys use.
Hey there fellow caver! Haha I was just thinking about ways to organize my cave gear and stay organized😂 and baaam! This video came up! I need to do what you did and get organized haha. Love your channel! New sub here and pumped for many more cool videos!
Very nice.
Very nice setup. I'm inspired to reorganize my growing collection of gear. I was curious about your check list for trips... care to share them? I'm always looking for new ideas to plan my outings.

Where can one get those side packs? They seem very comfortable and easy to clean, and not as cumbersome as the big european-style kitbags that they use over here. I have only used a military surplus backpack and it's a pain to clean and dry, so I'm looking for an upgrade. By the way, the sewing machine joke was so subtle, I laughed a lot with that one 🤣
sergarcarr The side-packs I have were made by Lost Creek. Unfortunately this company was sold and the new owners appear to no longer make them. On Rope 1 makes a comparable (and in some ways better) version of these side-packs.
@@DerekBristol alright, many thanks! I'll check them out, hopefully I will find something similar in spanish land, or maybe get the pattern and build it, as shipping from outside of the EU is quite inconvenient. Thank you again!
Have you actually used a #6 Camalot in a cave? That's awesome!
also if you ever want to sell your petzl microcender let me know, haha
I’ve only ever used the #6 three times outside. Largest I’ve used in a cave is #3.
It would be nice if you could add some links for some of the caving gear you use. Just a thought.
Gear room goals
It's good to have goals. BTW, I'm a fan of your channel. Keep up the good work.
Did someone question your need for all those descenders? I would say you need more.
Exactly!
You have enough stuff to equip a big expedition!
Hmm our local climbing store got less equipment :D
Sry, but never heard of straw gear. What is it used for?
I heard, you will need a good rock to test those concrete screws and even better hangers ;)
Straws are used to split rock.
Awesome
Fantastic organization! Funnily enough, I have a question not about your caving gear, but your sleeping pad: what do you use? Any recommendations?
Babooshka00 I’ve been using the Thermarest Neoair Xlite for a few years now. Best combination of light weight, compact size and comfort.
Interested in getting rid of your carbide lamps/generator/parts?
oh dude is there a particular reason why treatment is prefered over filters?
great content. I recommend your channel to all my colleagues. waiting for your helmet review. maybe review knee pads as well?
Thanks Henry. I need to get back into the routine of doing monthly gear reviews.
I’d love to start dry caving it looks like a calling I’m willing to answer. Where do I start and is there any training/certifications that are required to do it?
No required training or certifications. Some general information on how to get started can be found here: www.derekbristol.com/getting-started
@@DerekBristol Awesome. Thank you brother. 🤙🏻
What is the name of those cave suits?? Is there a device that maps 3d as you move though a cave?
I have many cave suits made by a few companies that no longer make them, as well as AV, Meander, and Landjoff. There are 3D mapping tools that utilize Lidar, but it hasn't been developed to the point where it works while traveling. Someday soon though.
@@DerekBristol thanks that helps. Mapping caves must be tough. I was thinking about that probe they used in Prometheus movie. We have drones that are small and efficient I could see that invention happening in the next 10 years.
What model of side pack do you recommend for SD caves like Jewel and Wind?
Most cavers have been using Lost Creek Packs, but they don't seem to be producing packs anymore. The Black Hills cavers developed their own version called the "Pahasapa Pack". Recently they've been working with OnRope 1 to have these made again. Check with the Pahasapa Grotto or OnRope 1 if interested... and in case you weren't aware, all off-trail day trips in both Wind and Jewel requires a side pack.
@@DerekBristol Thank you.
nice
Ever been caving in Michigan?
No... still on my bucket list.
While there are people who will find this boring, I'd prefer not to be engaging them in any sort of major logistics if they just give up and move on. My place may be a bachelor pad disaster area, but at least I have some idea what some manageable improvements are.
Derek, is caving a professional hobby for you, or is your caving a part of your professional career?
Daniel Smith Not a career, just a serious hobby. I know a few of the people on your recent trip. Caving has a small community.
@@DerekBristol Wow, that's awesome. Well, I'm going again a week from Saturday with the Tulsa Grotto. They are going to teach us how to survey. This last trip was observation learning for me. They let me explore ahead a ways to see what passages were ahead. I think surveying and finding new leads is what really interests me. And I want to learn vertical eventually.
what the hefk is s distos???
A real man cave
Micro shaving??
You'll need to Google it
At 0.01s the most important thing was glanced over. A female with a laptop relaxing. Any person, especially a bloke with so much caving gear- if not stored like u show would not be able to have a woman in the house.
I am a very new student.. could you donate some rope to my cause? I love climbing but I'm not monetarily set.. I appreciate any help.
:-)
Es asombroso todo el equipo que tienes, estas muy bien armado
