  • For the last two-and-change years this channel has focused HARD on sharing large format photography. The How-To’s, process, and pretty much anything I’ve picked up along the way. It’s been a great time sharing this craft with thousands of you from around the globe and it’s my hope with this platform to welcome in even more. But in this process, it’s also very important that I don’t end up hating this aspect of photography that I love. In an effort to stave off burnout, I’ve been slowing things way, way down.

Being wheelchair bound doesn't only have disadvantages. One advantage is, that I can carry a lot with me. I have three bags on my wheelchair, and in them I have half a dozen cameras, plus a couple cameras which are on me. Only one of them is a large format camera (a Stenopeika 5x7). The other cameras are all medium format film cameras and - besides my phone - I additionally have a digital point and shoot on me (an Olympus TG-6), and most of the times bring a digital Olympus Pen-F.
The large format camera is the center peace of my photography, but I'm nearly exclusively doing street portraits with it. All the other motifs I ran into I usually take one of my medium format cameras. Since I carry four different formats with me (6x4.5, 6x6, 6x9 and 6x14) and some of this formats in both, b&w and color (the 6x6 and the 6x14, the 6x4.5 is color only and the 6x9 b&w only) I'm prepared for nearly each situation I run into. And if it needs to be really quick, I just take one of the digital cameras.
I sometimes get the notion, that I will need more time to decide which camera to take than to actually take the picture - what is not true. With nearly 50 years of experience in photography I don't have to think over what camera to take, that is a fraction of a second automatic assessment process of the situation. The advantage of all this is, that I'll never get bored by being bound to just one format.

I’ve been having a great autumn with my Rolleiflex 2.8D and my digital gear . My photography spans many formats and I think wonderful art can be done with any photo gear if the creator embraces it.
I’m here because I like your beautiful photography, the enthusiasm with which you pursue it and the wonderful presentation here, Mat. If you want to investigate other formats, I think it’s that much richer for all of us. And I’d much rather see you enjoying your passion with fewer episodes than reaching burnout trying to crank out content.

I got my first large format camera (a 9x12 cm plate camera) in 2002 and was able to shoot with it in 2003 (took time to get the rest of the kit together). But it wasn't one thing or the other -- I've been doing photography with intent since 1970; I shoot 4x5, 120 in 6x9, 6x7, 6x6, and 6x4.5 (I've even got a Bencini Koroll 24s that puts 24 frames of 3x4 cm on a roll of 120), and 127 (full frame, half frame, and 4x4). I also shoot 35 mm (including half frame and two different stereo formats -- half frame pairs and Realist), and I've got a number of Minolta/Kiev 16 mm cameras (both 10x14 mm and 13x17 mm frame) plus a couple that use 110 -- which, yes, you can still buy. And I still get a hankering for a Minox every now and then. I've found medium format to be my main format since getting a Mamiya RB67 -- but I won't be dropping any of these formats any time soon, and 35 mm is making a comeback since I've gotten a working Kiev 2 (clone of a pre-War Contax II) and some good lenses for it, as well as a Nikkormat FT2.
All that to say, you won't offend me or lose my viewing by including content for other formats.

I'll be here as long as you are creating content. I understand burnout all too well. I burned out on digital photography about 5 or 6 years ago. I peaked at over 60,000 digital images one year. The following year it dropped to 3,000. So far for 2022, I've made a little over 1,500 images. I would argue that I have a lot more "keepers" in 2022 than I did the year I shot 60,000+. It's real easy to shoot a lot of the same thing with digital. I would snap off an image, check the screen and histogram, adjust, compose, shoot, and check. Composition was more about having enough stuff in the image than having a good composition. I could easily crop in post to get what I should have shot to begin with. I showed my work and sold a few, not enough to make it a business though. When I got into large format I had to learn to compose and expose with care. There is no histogram and film isn't cheap. To this day, when I shoot my 35mm film camera, I check the back after each frame lol. I have to admit, I enjoy photography more now that I've slowed down. I won't be able to make the livestream live but I look forward to it.
