The way she pronounces her lyrics is so matter of fact and seductive at the same time, iconic, she doesn’t even need to try !!
Chaka is still the Queen of Funk hands down though this wasn't her best performance. But she still has it even at 63 and I think if she was vibing with the orchestra more she would have killed it Chaka style. Still sexy & beautiful..

Jools band were great they just stood off a little - because its Chaka after all. Great drummer and backing vocalists to give steadiness and oomph. They ain't the NPG but for a big band configured differently - they did a very likable job behind a uniquely talented lady.

Chaka Khan singing the song without using a single consonant was more noticeable.
Dunno what it is but the band seems to be playing some weird pop rhythm rather than clipping the funk. Just sounds like a "lets remove the groove version". Shame, but Jools usually gets it right so seeing as a one off.

Best bits of this arrangement are the bass and drums in my opinion - orchestral stuff sounded pretentious when compared to the original synth. Chaka's still got it though

The band just weren't in the zone for this one. Think they were a bit out of their depth playing this style of music. I'm sure they are fine musicians in other contexts.

I love her and this song, but this is just terrible. She looks strung out or drugged like she couldnt care less, she cant keep the beat, singing out of measure, this whole performance sucks, and the band sounds like a bunch of studio musicians. and lastly, the outfit - no no no no no - looks like she is wearing rubber bondage gear that is WAY too tight. Sorry.
