Commenting because of my contract to Dave. Not only does he eat all the wierd and/or burnt stuff served to him through this channel. He goes the whole mile and, even though he hesitates for a second, stays true to his commitment. What a champ!
Same. I by accident ate “hot dogs” that had 1,5 million Scoville chili in them. That was an … interesting experience. I did not look as pretty and composed as these guys.
That remind me our high-school trip where we had a really nice Chinese take-out next to the place we stayed in, and the boys watching me finishing the spicy beef they didn't manage.
@@Nixx0912 I'm on the other side. I actually like a little bit of spice but I don't really handle it well. I had a coworker from India and he always laughed at me...
Humans are weird. “Hey this plant really doesn’t want anything eating it and triggers extreme pain in anything that does.” “Cool let’s make snacks out of it!”
Well, a lot of people are less sensitive to spicy foods, and many people like the taste of chillies, myself included. I don't find chillies to be painful, but too much can get uncomfortable, however I love the taste of chillies, so I love to put chilli in a lot of things.
While chilis do activate the body's pain receptors, because pain and pleasure are so closely linked in the brain, it can also activate the body's pleasure receptors when eating it. This is the same reason why some people are into BDSM; they derive pleasure from ceratin levels of pain
I garintee it was one guy hungry or unknowingly ait it ...then went back to camp and was like I bet you can't eat one...tail of every intro to hot food....those saying they like it from the start I bet eat spicy foods from the start too as a little one
The difference between your kids' reactions is so STARK... One is just so relaxed about everything even when he's obviously in pain and the other one is extremely expressive- This also gave some good information so thank you 👍I had no idea OIL and SUGAR WATER could help?
Repeated exposure does grow you tolerance to this stuff, I enjoy spicy foods but I haven't had the luxury to eat it frequently enough to gain a better tolerance. I was at this at this sandwich type restaurant yesterday and I noticed that wasabi ranch was an option they had for sauces, I of course chose it and most definitely going to choose it the next time i go there. Wasabi is a spice type different from peppers but it's still intense.
@@Im-BAD-at-satireIt's a kind of horseradish, and true Wasabi can only be grown in certain areas in Japan, where the soil is saturated with the decomposed old plants for hundreds of years. Apparently, it makes a huge difference to what you'd usually get in the West. Not as intensely spicy initially and a lot more flavourful. I nearly got in a fist fight with my buddy (not uncommon in drunken, heated arguments; we never let a physical fight ruin our friendship though) because I stupidly thought it came from some kind of pea-like vegetable, because of the little snacks you can get lol. We just settled it with a Google search instead...
I love how everyone was dieing with those last two, chugging milk and whatnot... And then there's James just sitting there with a straight face the whole time.
i love how you've got the one son who's just like ann, you've got dave who's like "I SUFFER FOR YOU PEOPLE" and then you've got the other son who literally cannot feel pain apparently 😂
James outs spicy hot sauces on his dinner all the time - so it definitely works. He also has a very high pain threshold, if he says something is hurting I know it is really bad.
I mean, it's cool that you got People with different Spice tolerance in this, most People can find one to relate to. I'm probably like James, with dave-like comments but I mean nice work, thank you for the educational video and now I'm off To shopping some spicy chocolate 😋
@@HowToCookThat I've got a high pain threshold, too. Last time I hurt enough to go to the ER because I could barely function... I had a chest infection that had collapsed my lung. I didn't even flinch when they put a chest tube in. With spice, the signals just hit a limit and stop over about 1M scoville for me.
Dave has eaten some truly nasty concoctions without much complaint so you know that chocolate must be bringing the pain to make him reconsider his job.
This is such a good example of a responsible challenge type video. There is consent, information, warnings and an age restriction. Amazingly done and very interesting. James is absolutely fantastic in his stoicism, especially compared to the rest of the family. He's hilarious!
And in one shot there was a blood pressure machine… you could tell they were probably checking to make sure it was safe for him to continue…and that he was ok.
I came here to make this comment lol his description was on point it made me understand how it may taste/feel if I tried them since I love/tolerate spicy foods pretty decently lol 😂 not gonna lie I’ve cried eating some things though😝
I love that you took care of your boys to have blood pressure machines on them and to also not let your youngest son participate past the first one. I see so many reckless things on youtube and I'm just glad that the care you take in debunking fake/harmful cooking hacks you also take to protect your children while filming an unrelated video.
We stan a queen who makes sure everyone is consenting and ok with what they're doing beforehand, I'll add this video to my list of reasons why you're one of the best youtubers out there
Posting this for Dave, since apparently, I'm involved in some kind of bargain. I like spicy food, but spicy for me is those Korean spicy ramens that weigh in around 8000 Scoville units. I would never even dream of trying anything that says ghost chili, scorpion, or Carolina Reaper.
@@fbidumbbeea great trick is cracking an egg in! A lot of Koreans do that, half the mix, add vinegar and other veggies, etc. I would add two eggs sometimes when my spice tolerance was lower. Lol.
It's refreshing to see someone handling potentially dangerous food responsibly instead of just being as extreme as possible for the views. Good on her for setting healthy boundaries with her kids' participation and making it clear that tapping out was absolutely an option. (That being said, lmao, looks like someone stole all the pain insensitivity genes, huh?)
Also I Really appreciate the warnings and "know your limits" "it's okay to say no". I think this applies for everything... chilli, alcohol... whatever.
we eat a lot of heat in our house and one of my kids has autism, his pain threshold is a lot higher than anyone else's, and James reminded me of my son's chill vibe while everyone else is dying
I'd feel so safe with Ann as my mum because she really really does her research and she's so knowledgeable! I also just noticed Ann was monitoring her kids' blood pressure to make sure they weren't in any sort of danger
I tried eating something with 250.000 scoville today and it was the most awful thing I have done in a while and will never repeat again. But it reminded me of this video again so I came to rewatch it and I can't even imagine how bad the last few chocolates must have been-- thank you for going through this for research
I had an uncle eat a whole Carolina reaper for $20. It doesn't make the act better, it just makes it worse, when you realize he is a grown man who did this on a bet from work. He came home and suffered through the single worst bouts of stomach cramps and side effects of the running Trotsky kind that kept him up most of the night. My Aunt made him camp in the bathroom with some milk and a Pepto bismol. They didn't end up going to a medical professional (she is a nurse thankfully, and put him on some monitoring for safety sake), but he's avoided peppers, other than some Tabasco and black pepper, since.
That could count as likely inducing a placebo. If they know there's a way to make it work, then they'd _know_ it does work, and yet, that very thing could make them think it works better than it actually does.
I'm just imagining the confused look on someone's face when someone asks them if they want hot chocolate and instead of getting a cup of the hot liquid chocolate drink, they're presented with a square of chocolate with chilis in it
I love that you told your little tacker that was it for him. The little "awe" he said was so cute. It's always heartwarming to see people looking out for their children.
As a chilli consumer for most of my life, the best way to get rid of the heat in your mouth, and to stop your stomach from burning, is to drool it out. Literally, just stand over the sink and let your saliva and mucus do the work
And if you’re preparing to eat a spicy meal my advice is to get a big hit of a lot of spice about 15 minutes before the meal. For example, just take a bite out of a Thai chili. You’ll go through the pain and your body will react to it, and then by the time you’re eating the spicy meal you’re ready to actually enjoy the chilies in your food rather than suffer from them. It’s like a runners high but for chilis.
I thought James was full of crap and putting a brave face on at first, but the further the video went on it became fairly clear that it was no act. That boy has some substantial heat tolerance.
The cuts from the eldest son to the husband and second son is HILARIOUS. I kept laughing throughout this video. I am so sorry for your suffering, but this was too good.
Mazel tov to Dave on his novel! Thoroughly enjoyed watching you turn your whole family pink. The little one was lucky; sometimes it's good to be the baby of the family.
Love seeing that Ann is keeping her kids safe by monitoring blood pressure (and presumably heart rate), but still giving them the chance to participate. Good going Reardon fam, y'all did awesome!
You can tell who in the family either has the highest pain tolerance, or eats the most spicy foods lol this was amazing I couldn't stop laughing and at several instances even snorted laughing

@sam zuriel I had one before...I think it might have been the lindor, or something very similar. It was a mild, slow burn at the back of my mouth, but not unpleasant! I wouldn't be able to do anything spicier, lol
I have a friend that once tried pure capsaicin because he could find anything hot enough for him. He said it was a bit spicy, but nit as hit as he had hoped. That was until he went to the bathroom. He said never again, it felt like peeing pure fire for 24-48 hours.
You should try diluting the capsaicin in a bit of alcohol, capsaicin pure won't really spread over your tongue (but you will feel it later on the toilet) but put in alcohol it will have the full effect and he will definitely feel it.
@@TotalXPvideos haha I'm sure he has tried it. To be honest he has destroyed his taste buds over the years to the point he can't taste much outside of extreme spice.
Yes I have developed a tolerance for spice since I eat it everyday, sometimes I “test” myself and try something REALLY hot. My tongue is fine, but the next day… nah. You learn the hard way.
Haha, it's really funny to see the different personalities play out. I really felt for Jed when she told him she wouldn't let him try any of the other ones, but of course that's only sensible

As an environmental scientist we met with a village in Ivory Coast once and part of their custom was to pass around two bowls, one with cola nut (mild stimulant but takes a bit to kick in, nice bitter taste but not for everyone) and this red, leafy looking paste. Well, I didn't know what it was but I mimicked the senior anthropologist and took a lot. Wow. That tablespoon amount was a lot of chili. Great method since you know people will be awake for your meeting but very glad I spent time in India before then. Love this channel, well informed content and seemingly great people. Well done for being responsible content producers.
Ann: "Eating overly spicy foods can be very dangerous. leading to possible esophageal rupture or deadly cerebrovascular constriction. Please exercise caution, and it is always okay to say no." * Immediately cuts to her son eating the death chocolate * The comedic timing on this channel is truly something else.
This is me with my husband. He put about two spoonfuls of a special hot sauce on a burrito and was happily eating it. I had a stuffy nose and was desperate for relief so I very lightly dipped a cracker into the hot sauce- maybe half a teaspoon or so- and took a bite. Worst mistake. I chugged a whole glass of milk, then put ice cube after ice cube on my tongue. After half an hour I put Orajel on it to numb the pain so I could sleep. My nose was still stuffed up and my husband finished his burrito.
@@renaaltman3974 I can't imagine you jumping around and he's eating his burrito happily, if you made that burrito then it must be a very nice one that he can't even do anything to help your pain.
Everyone else has steam coming from their ears, James yeah I can feel it getting warm. I wish I had his tolerance. Thanks again for another educational video, Ann and Family. Lol, dave needs to do stand up... "I need a new job" had me rolling
I have a fun contradiction in my body: I have tolerance for spicy food, and can taste it mostly with no problem, but due to incresing problems in my stomach that must be controlled now, I can no longer eat spicy food. Talk about having a skill for nothing.
Good job Dave and kids! “Its not spicy at all” and immediately coughing followed by “that’s unpleasant, NOW it’s hitting” plus the cutaways to the other son just chilling was so so funny to me.
Kudos to the Reardon family! My remedy of choice is sweetened condensed milk… has everything - sugar, fat, milk, and viscosity to stay longer in your mouth.
I love how one of the kids so clearly looks like his Dad and the other so clearly looks like his Mum and then the baby is just the cutest mix of them both!
I can't believe I never thought of this, but when you said the chili triggers pain, so much suddenly made sense. I have always been super bad with spicy foods. Even peppercorns are too much for me. I've always found that super confusing, but now it all makes sense! So, I have a disease that gives me a hypersensitive nervous system resulting in things like chronic pain because my nerve endings basically put the label of pain on every message they send to my brain. If the spice triggers pain for normal people, no wonder my body goes insane whenever I try it! This clears up so much, thank you Ann! 🧡
Same here! I have hypersensitivity too primarily to touch (most days even clothes hurt to wear) but to other things like heat and cold too and while I've got to a point where I'm used to a certain level of pain and can handle things like pepper and small amounts of mustard because I like the flavour (wouldn't eat either straight though) anything spicier is incredibly painful and horrible. I've always been confused why I can't eat spicy foods because I'm generally pretty used to pain but this clears everything up! It's cool to find someone else like me here.
Oh man, I never made this connection either! I wonder if there have been any studies about chronic pain levels and spicy food handling... like, do many people with chronic pain and nerve issues have zero tolerance for spice? Does building up spice tolerance help your body deal with chronic pain? So many questions! Thanks for this comment! I also suffer from chronic pain and nerve problems and like you said, too much black pepper gets me. I can't do spice at all, and I've always wondered why I'm so sensitive to it. I'm in school for neuropsychology and I wonder if I can work this into my senior research project?!? *squees in excited science brain*
@@debsbuckalew7345 that's so cool that you're studying that!!!!! Is there any way you could let us know if you find anything out during your project? I've spent most of my life frustrated at how little we know about chronic pain any small amount of knowledge is something I want. Since we've found 3 people with chronic pain and low spice tolerance in the comment section alone it stands to reason there's probably more of us.
No way, I have chronic pain too and I also can't handle anything spicy!! For the longest time I wouldn't eat pepperoni pizza, even after picking the pepperoni off, because even the oily residue of the pepperoni was way too spicy for me! It's so weird to find out there are more people this happens to
I also don't normally comment but Dave made me. James' reactions were just too funny. The others are visibly dying and he just shrugs and talks about the flavor. Fantastic video.
Your timing is as perfect as ever, Ann. The researchers who discovered and characterized TRPV1 (the capsaicin-detecting ion channel) won the Nobel Prize this year. Understanding how TRPV1 works had led to incredible discoveries in the treatment of chronic pain. Prolonged activation of TRPV1 has been found to reduce its activity over time (like how you described with repeated exposure to spiciness) meaning both antagonists and agonists of TPRV1 could be avenues for treating chronic pain patients. I’m in graduate school for neuroscience and love your commitment to science!!
Super cool thing about the TRPV1 receptor is that the version found in birds is insensitive to capsaicin, unlike in humans and other mammals. Possibly, this phenomenon evolved as a means to discourage mammals from consuming the fruit of chili pepper plants while encouraging birds to do so in order to disperse seeds. Due to the ability to fly, birds can disperse seeds further than mammals and swallow seeds whole, rather than grinding and destroying seeds with teeth.
I don't normally comment, but I'm commenting for Dave. He's the funniest 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Also congrats on that book publishing deal! As a US reader I'll have to check it out!
To remove chilli heat from your mouth: -Go for something cold / fatty / sugary. Ice cream works well. Or Yoghurt. This is why Indian food comes with yoghurt / raita. -Chew on some bread. -Rub your tongue against the roof of your mouth. The mechanical action can help remove the capsaicin molecules and stimulate the other receptors in the tongue. -Alcohol makes it worse
I felt a deep emotional connection to Matt desperately going bottoms up on the milk bottle. Dave feeling the spice in his ears tho, why is this man such a meme?!?!? Also congratulations to our hero for worldwide publishing!
Really glad that Ann says it’s acceptable to not take extremely spicy things. If I got a cent for each time someone was forced into eating something unpleasant, I’d be a millionaire.
I’m glad! I love spicy food and I will purposely even try ultra spicy things- but that’s my choice. I volunteer to be the spice tester for my friends because I don’t want to watch them suffer- everyone should be able to enjoy what they like.
I hate that people try to push others into doing something they don't want to do. If someone tries to shame me into doing something, I will just get angry at them because I won't be pushed into doing something I am not happy to do.
I'm concerned for your eldest, Ann. Does he just DRINK capsaicin extract?? XD Awesome video and I love how you told us all about how dangerous this stuff can be and how carefully you monitored your kids.
Reardon, you're the first spicy heat researcher who has actually informed me of the why and how capsaicin provokes the physical reaction of warmth and pain in humans such that I did an "aha!". Growing up in a mixed race home where Texas, Mexican and Thai food was (and still is) a part of the weekly diet, I was taught early how to kill the burning quickly: a big corner of bread sprinkled with salt. Or spread some mayo or cream cheese on the bread, add salt, wait about 20-30 seconds to see if that did it. If not, repeat and chase with either iced whole milk or, my favorite, ice cream. It offers relief much more quickly because the bread and salt acts like a sponge and makes contact with more surfaces for a bit longer, and the ice cream has all that thick rich fat and cold. If you try it and it works for you, do let us know. Big thanks, paz y salud.
That makes sense - when I've had excruciatingly hot noodles I've doused it with salt which obviously doesn't have any effect by dissolving in the thing that's spicy.
The editing is great on this one. Shots of you all having so much trouble with the heat and then change to your oldest who calmly explains the tingle on his tounge.
I used to be able to take the heat like the eldest I'd be the one eating the bird's eye chili out of the hottest stuff on the Chinese menu. One of my favorite chicken wings was mango habanero. I used to be able to still find Habanero Doritos, don't know if they're made anymore

I had an uncle eat a whole Carolina reaper for $20. It doesn't make the act better, it just makes it worse, when you realize he is a grown man who did this on a bet from work. Exactly... Sometimes you just gotta drool like a dog haha

Sorry to hear about your condition, that must be hard to live with.
Since we've found 3 people with chronic pain and low spice tolerance in the comment section alone it stands to reason there's probably more of us.
No way, I have chronic pain too and I also can't handle anything spicy!!
I loved the research about using capsaicin patches to decrease pain perception - but thought it was too detailed for this video.
Oh, fascinating! Is TRPV1 found all over the body? I'll have to check it out.
Do you happen to know where I can read about this? I’ve got chronic pain so really would be great to learn a bit more!
Hell yeah! I'm an RA in a neuroscience lab. What aspect of neuroscience are you researching/planning to research?
Probably the only ones I don't skip the "advert" part. I enjoy how seamless everything is.
To remove chilli heat from your mouth:
-Go for something cold / fatty / sugary.
-Alcohol makes it worse
soda also makes it worse. i find coke just doubles the pain. it's even worse than just plain water
@@magsimags coke already stimulates your pain receptors, so you're just adding to it.

He's secretly mexican
Truly amazing! I love the reaction of your eldest boy he was so calm while everyone else was doing
FR Ann is not only super wholesome and cute but she's a serious role model for anyone. She's out here with a food science degree. Its so nice to see so many people consuming the content of a really badass woman who also just warms my heart.
Amounts of chilli in chocolate by Dave:
1. Hit
2. Hint
3. Whack in the face
4: Ears on fire XD
Dave's "my ears are on fire" was iconic 😬 Happy to see Ann prove that doing this kind of thing with safety protocols in place is possible, and recommended!
You aren't eating chili's until you can hear your own lips buzzing.
i need that to be on a t-shirt!
I don't know why I adore this family so much. Especially Ann and Dave. They are pretty chilled people you'd want to hang out with.
The parents would be great to have dinner with, can definitely see them being good family friends
