Great job Todd. Impressed you were prepared with the springs. The cost to have called someone to do all that would have been a killer. Thanks for sharing.
I guess you watched enough UA-cam to notice how many Leaf springs are breaking on the RV’s !! Thirty years ago it never happened that often? Where is that steel coming from I wonder? Anyway, great job Todd !! 😁👍
Todd I was saying the entire time how impressed I was with you and how you just jumped in and fixed it. So freaking awesome. And I love love love Sheila’s sense of humor. ❤❤
This is exactly why I also carry 2 spare leaf springs, shackles, bolts, etc. If a person that's traveling in an RV didn't have these parts, they'd be screwed if a leaf spring broke. I also carry 3 Jack's, impact wrench and sockets. Awesome video!
Sorry to see the troubles you had but your guardian angel was looking after you two. Thank goodness you did a thorough check before getting back on the road after the tire change.
I would toss all 6 $50ea china leaf springs. I no longer worry about the cheap china Dexter or Lippert springs. I installed American made springs with American steel. Never worry about broken springs again. AlCan springs Grand Junction CO. They are 2inch wide rather then 1-1/2inch. They machine the ends down to fit you existing spring hangers. Also the ends are a much larger diameter so a real thick bronze bushing can be installed.
All ways ready? Now Grand Design has this deal where they send you a whole set of tires for free...just ask, I got mine. Dexter will send you a complete set of new axles which has new pads, bearings, axles, drums, etc. We got ours, my wife and I installed them on or Saint Augustine lawn using a plywood base and 4 bottle jacks. Used 2 furniture movers to cradle the drums by adding a extra piece of wood. Grand Design has been there for our four years in the Imagine 24mpr toy hauler. Good luck with the rest of your under carriage. I am impressed!
I am sitting here at home watching and thinking, I am impressed with Todd. I have replaced an axle on my trailer one time and now carry the old springs and one hub assy for just such an emergency. Good job.
Hey Todd - Great Job 👍🏻. You really have to be carefull on the torque specifications for the bolts....wouldn't want to SNAP any bolts driving down the road from over torquing..... (foreshadowing). 😉 This is how we all learn though....through our life's lessons. Important part is that you aren't afraid to give it a go. Even with mess ups here and there, you are saving yourself money, affording to buy tools for future repairs, AND are more knowledgeable of your equipment everytime you break out the socket set. LOVE your content and positivity!
Wow, impressive to say the least, preventive maintenance goes a long way. You just saved thousands here, my leaf springs are bottomed out just like you showed with the new and old side by side. Thanks for your prior planning. Be safe.
Way to go. Always an RVer's nightmare of having something happen at the wrong time in the wrong place. It's nice to look back as see that His hand was in the situation. Thanks for sharing.
I probably watched the same video you did of the couple with broken leaf springs. Great decision to buy a couple spares to have. That saved you a ton of time and running around for sure.
First of your videos I have watched. Todd your positive attitude is such a breath of fresh air. You are definitely a glass half full type of guy. Oh and Sheila is very patient. Subscribed
Todd is amazing! I was thinking that at the exact time he said some viewer is thinking how impressed they are in his skills. I’m happy it all worked out, and I learned a lot. 😊
those cracks on your rear support areas are a bit scary. but you did all the right stuff in a pinch . Great job and thank you for showing us your concerns! Great peeps on the road again !!
I am definitely impressed!! And I just love that the 2 of you still find humor in these situations. This is a really great instructional video...not only showing the repair, but also highlighting the other failure points that need to be addressed. When I first started the video I was thinking you two will be there awhile until someone delivers a new leaf spring. And then, there's our boy Todd, coming through like superman (or a boy scout), prepared with 2 extra leaf springs on-hand!! Great job you two!!!
I was just looking for a camper for the kids and I. Though I'm pretty dog gone handy, I wouldn't have been able to get through that repair without a melt down or three. You guys did great! Here's a quarter toward the repairs and tires! :)
Well, you certainly would not want this to happen on a long travel day. Thankful that it happened where it did and you discovered it when Sheila needed to stop. I think that was a God thing. And it being a short travel day you have more time to spend on the project and still get to your destination before too late. Every day I pray for y’all safe travels, and the Lord has been so good. This is minor in the whole scheme of things considering things that happened to other people on the same day. Give thanks and keep on keeping on. Love you guys
Great reminder to those who are on the road a lot! Always check your rig - look at your tires for wear, get on the ground and look underneath. Being broken down on the road is now fun! Thankfully you're safe and it wasn't worse!
Feel your pain on this one. We bent a equalizer spring hanger. Which included the frame! Just got it out of the shop two days ago. All new springs and CRE3000 equalizers and wet bolts. Put the sumos back on. Lets see how the next 15K miles go!!
Very lucky in many ways. I too carry 2 spare leaf springs and use sumos. I use the Sailun S637 tire and have had great luck. I lifted our trailer and hauled them in. I also went from the 235/80 to the 235/85 as it added 500lbs more capacity to each tire. Good luck you two.
Todd you do impress me. We too had a leaf spring break on our last trip and we did not have a spare and had to try and find one on a Sunday, thanks to Tractor Supply we were able to make it back home safely.
I had this happen close to home and knew of a local trailer company with springs in stock. I never would've thought to find a spring through Tractor Supply. Thanks for the tip!
New subscriber. Thanks for sharing this terrible situation. Great job! Very informative and situations like this is always a learning opportunity. Now I have to get caught up on your other videos! I wish RV manufacturers would just start building their RVs with independent suspension and disc brakes. Safe travels.
We blew three tires on our last trip - all due to the worn shocks - a good lesson in checking gear and double checking those who work on your rig! Great repair at roadside Todd!
Beth and I had a leaf spring snap 65 miles before Disney I didn't have a spare one but thanks to the people on Grand design forum guy at camp ground had an leaf spring and others said take the tire off and rachet strap the axel. we made it safe and sound.Found it on my walk around.
I am so sorry you had these things happen. However, I must commend you on being so calm and prepared to do these repairs yourself. I can aspire to be more like you Todd. Safe travels going forward ❤
Great job. That’s where they break. They reverse arch at the ends. Replaced mine after 1 1/2 years and the shop added an extra longer leaf that goes almost under the eyebolts. Basically gives u a 4K axle.
I’m very impressed by your skills and God’s protection over y’all!! thanks for the reminders of safety. I showed this to hubby so we can think about it on our next trip.
We replaced our shackles and bolts with the MorRyde heavy duty shackle kit. This provides a better and stronger shackle, wet bolts and bronze phosphur bushings. From what I've seen. The plastic bushings wear out and then the leaf spring ends take so.much stress that they snap at the ends due to flex. The kit for our trailer was less than $150 shipped. They also quiet down the suspension so much it's noticable when driving through parks. We like it so much it is on our first mods list for any new travel trailers.
Todd did do an Outstanding job in replacing the leaf spring, for sure! Maybe my greatest fear in gtraveling.....so much so I may purchase a leaf spring (or pair) before we leave on our 31 day trip from Indiana to Acadia NP, and back???? However, Sheila made an awesome observation and question regarding the broken leaf spring and the bad tire!!!!! Regardless, thank you for an incredible learning experience! Sincerely, Mike Mezo
Tod, for the spare tire on the rig and spare tire on the truck I have a pressure monitors that show on my tire monitor screen in the truck. I always know the pressure and temperature in all the tires on the truck and rig.
You were lucky of fortunate you decide. It's hard to know how much torque you are putting on a 9/16" stud, but it happens. Hopefully you make the rest of your trip and you can inspect all the other studs that hold on the wheels. Good Luck! Nice video, you did recognize your use of the impact wrench and the root cause of the stud failure. Great Travels!
You are about the 4th or 5th person that i have seen had broken leaf springs that have also had the sumo springs. So...i have to wonder if the sumo springs are actually causing broken leaf springs.
@@markrizzuto8751 yep, that's what I was wondering too. They limit the travel of the middle of the spring which may cause the end to snap when it bottoms out.
Great job i have same problem on California almost 500 miles driven home happen on Sunday morning shops was close my only solution was lifting the trailer and put a 4x4 lumber board between the frame and the end of the broken leaf when i lowered the trailer the spring created a packet on the board and helped to keep the board even with the frame stated in place until we back home I hallway when stop for diesel i check the gap mine is 2 inch apart between front and back tires doing that i found one side of the trailer was closer from the other side i decide to check the suspension
Got it Helped a lot to know what to look for stuck on the side of the road with exactly the same thing but it’s a weekend and we aren’t carrying extra Springs. Have to wait till Monday
In truth, replacing leaf springs could /should be done every couple years. The beating they take is enormous. And, like any spring, the more they are exercised the more they degrade. Yes. Carry spares. I do as well. But check with a suspension specialist regarding a recommendation for routine replacement.
Here are the Tools you will need: ✅ Dewalt Cordless Impact Wrench: amzn.to/3xm5Sgo
✅ Dewalt Impact Socket Set: amzn.to/4alL7A4
✅ Torque Wrench: amzn.to/3VQ5MYq
✅ Craftsman 450-Piece Tool Set: amzn.to/4aCPhU2
✅ 2 Ton UniJack Hydraulic Bottle Jack: amzn.to/3vz1WbJ
Well, at least you guys have a great attitude about these issues.
Great job Todd. Impressed you were prepared with the springs. The cost to have called someone to do all that would have been a killer. Thanks for sharing.

So so SOOOO glad that you guys ended up seeing that and being saved from a catastrophe!!! Thank you God!!!
Well I am one of those people that said I am impressed with Todd. Good for you for thinking forward before you even had the problem.
This is exactly why I also carry 2 spare leaf springs, shackles, bolts, etc. If a person that's traveling in an RV didn't have these parts, they'd be screwed if a leaf spring broke. I also carry 3 Jack's, impact wrench and sockets. Awesome video!

You should get rid of those plastic bushings in the springs and install brass ones with wet bolts.
@@richardbrown8794 i know e trailer has them

I’m really impressed with Todd! 😂. Sorry that happened. Great you were prepared. Oy. Safe travels.
I just told my husband, "I'm pretty impressed" and then you said, " somebody's saying how impressed they are". That was me! lol! 😆
Love it!!
Talk about being prepared. That was awesome. Job well done.

Welcome to our channel- glad you’re here!
When we stop for snacks, I walk around the rig before snack shopping. Todd you da man! Great catch on the leaf spring. Switch it Up!
Hey, I’m really impressed with Todd. How many people carry extra leaf springs. Good job
watch bob wells cheap rv living- few even carry tools..
I’m really proud of Todd 💚💚💚
Great job. And the Sheila one-liners were awesome. 😂
Another good reason to have sumo springs, thanks to Todd I installed them also on my Momentum 351M

Absolutely incredible you had the forethought to get 2 spare leaf springs. Excellent work .

Nice to see I’m not the only one carrying an extra spring.
Always prepared! Good job Todd! It's amazing how many people don't know anything about their spare let alone change one.

Praise the Lord that you found that before a horrible accident could happen! So glad you both are safe! ❤😊🎉🙏
Wow you had extra springs, very impressed, great job

Great job on being prepared for most anything. Thanks for sharing about the CRE300 cracks also. Y’all stay safe.
Great Job. That was my justification for when I had the IS installed.
