Upon my 2nd viewing, I felt that maybe Oscar cannot die. He is blessed and cursed to live, which maybe explains those deaths and then he rises again, as if nothing had happened.
I saw that film 5 times and still feel the need for more 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 And yes, this movie changed my life.... for the best 🙏 Thank you for sharing with us your feelings about Holy Motors 🛤
Leo's carax said in an interview that it was a film about the present moment. He says that movie scenes have neither past nor future. When he shoots a scene, it is the PURE present moment. This is why the scenes of the film are unique and do not relate to a past or a future of the characters.
Love this film, I had a similar experience though I came to the conclusion that everything was an act much earlier. I found the music video oner sequence to be a profoundly significant one. There's a unifying power in wordless art and specifically music that I think would be betrayed by description.
Fantastic. I have watched this movie a few times, probably out of a weariness of overly expositive film I assumed. To be alienated by a film and to let it wash over me emotionally was the desire I think. So I never really put too much energy into asking what it meant. but now it's almost painfully obvious that like any truly inspired and great art, it's a reflection of life. This becomes the truth on a deeper level for me because at the time, I loved the movie very much, but found life nearly unbearable to take sober. And now returning in a cyclical way, to this film with your version of its essence exposed, and once again feeling like life is pointless but facing it with sobriety, I arrive back at the film like the feeling but on a deeper level of understanding. So thank you for a wonderful analysis and being a part of a synchronistic experience. Somehow life feels a little lighter now.
This is my favorite film of the last decade, and, especially the first time I saw it, it struck me as a performance piece about all of the roles that we might play (at least metaphorically) in the course of our lives, while at the same time being a homage to cinema. Watching it the second and third times, I began to deconstruct and analyze the individual skits, which are full of audio visual treats, odd juxtapositions, and surreal twists that draw upon the history of cinema, conjuring up archetypal stories and characters in amazing, imaginative collage.
I believe seeing certain films totally "pure" (no/limited review, trailer or poster) is fun and important for some films. Solid work. What software did you use to create the shot where you show the review poster and trailer images?
@@WhatsSoGreatAboutThat Thank you, that's the one! And yep, it's a catchy tune alright (a pity though that it has so few views, hope it catches on in the foreseeable future )
The movie also descended into darkness but there was never a sunshine afterwards it's about darkness and nihilism and entropy. The protagonist goes home and plays with his monkeys. For anyone who has been high around they're cat or dog there's no paranoia no judging just a fleeting sense of oneness till the next act. I feel the last scene symbolized that
Okay, so I totally watched this before seeing Holy Motors, but I get the feeling that it wasn't actually enjoyable to watch anyway. Am I wrong in assuming that?
Haha, I guess it depends on taste. I really enjoyed Holy Motors, I wouldn't have made a video about it if I hadn't. It is a weird experience though, so not necessarily for everyone. I certainly remember a few people in the theatre I was in not being as enthusiastic about it as I was.
I guess the plot's lack of purpose was too difficult for me. Oscar's purpose is to play these characters, but what for? If the movie took place on another planet and Oscar wasn't human, then maybe I could forgive the lack of understanding but Holy Motors is in France and though I've never been there I have an idea of French culture. This film seems to have a non-human culture, not French. Oscar wakes up and he's already playing a character. He keeps changing characters and it's difficult to keep up with him and his stories. I like the non-human cultures in Star Wars and Doctor Who and Westworld, but those works take the time to reveal their worlds' cultures.
Holy Motors is not about a non-human culture, it's actually a very human one, just portrayed in an abstract way. I don't know how to explain my position any better than I did in the video, only that I think any impulse to try and pin down some kind of mythos or lore to the film's world is misplaced. Thanks for watching. :)

I agree, the music sequence is one of my favourite scenes in all of cinema!

I am highly conviced that "This Is America" by Childish Gambino is directly inspired by Carax "Holly Motors"...
How?
I watched this film on psychedelic mushrooms, made perfect sense. True story.
What's the music at 4:20? I definitely don't think it's in the movie. Thanks
Do you find it ??
Hi Grace, great video! Could you tell me what music/ song is playing at 3:50 onwards?

Wait, so you didn't count the accordion interval as one of his appointments then?
Well, it does say it's an "entr'acte".
i think this scene mean even if he is in a "entr'acte" he just keep acting. in fact he never stop to playing characters

Holy motors is a non action version of the matrix.
