  • This is the album version of the b-side to the 8th #1 hit by Motown group The Supremes entitled "You Keep Me Hangin' On"
This song was first released in 1966 as the b-side to the song stated above. It was then featured on their 1967 album "The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland". The album not only featured 2 #1s from the group, "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Love Is Here And Now Youre Gone" but also covers of other Motown artists' hits that Holland-Dozier-Holland had written and produced. The album also features the very popular b-side "There's No Stopping Us Now" and the potential a-side "Going Down For The Third Time" that was the b-side to "Reflections" (that was featured on the 1968 album of the same name.
"The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland" was somewhat of a tribute to HDH and their great songwriting and producing abilities as they had written all The Supremes hits from "When The Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes" to "Forever Came Today" with 10 of those hits rising to #1.
Here is the chart information for "The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland" album and its singles:
    "The Supremes Sing Holland-Dozier-Holland"
US Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart: #6
US Billboard Top R&B Albums Chart: #2
"You Keep Me Hangin' On" b/w "Remove This Doubt" (Motown 1101, October 12, 1966)
    US Billboard Hot 100: #1
US Billboard R&B Singles Chart: #1
    UK Singles Chart: #8
"Love Is Here and Now You're Gone" b/w "There's No Stopping Us Now" (Motown 1103, January 11, 1967)
    US Billboard Hot 100: #1
US Billboard R&B Singles Chart: #1
    UK Singles Chart: #17

"Each time we meet, you make me feel so incomplete..." I could feel those lyrics, how they touched me then and still do now. Dozier smiled at me and said, "Yeah!" I told him that although my big sister Rosemary, later mother to rock singer/guitarist Maria Webster, bought and loved her 45 "You Keep Me Hanging On," when she was not around, I had to turn the record over and play the other side, "Remove This Doubt." That was/is MY song, Flo, Mary and Diane were/are singing this song just for me.

This was an old Supremes recording! It surfaced on the album years after it was recorded. I would like the world to know I'm the reason "Always in My Heart," which was supposed to be on "More Hits by the Supremes" finally made L.P. in the H-D-H album. I wrote a letter to Motown pointing on the record never got onto L.P., got a very nice reply from a company vice president, and bingo bango it appeared on the Supremes' next album, the H-D-H opus.

In the 90's I was invited by my old MCA Records boss Cary E. Mansfield to an LA songwriters conference that featured panelist Lamont Dozier; at the question and answer period, I specifically asked Dozier how he and the Holland Brothers wrote the lyrical pain to make Diana sing, "It's hurting me, it's hurting me.." At the end of the conference, Dozier approached me about my question and asked me to sing some of it; "Oh my God," I thought, "this is my Motown audition." I closed my eyes and sang...

what a surprise when I brought the 45 back in 6th grade and discovered a more mature adult sound of The Supremes. A lot of depth here, and the arrangement serves to emphasize the haunting tone ... makes this a timeless song for the ages. HDH had feelings where some people only have empty places.

I have to admit that I've never been a big fan of The Supremes, but I heard this playing in a record store today and I was totally blown away by how haunting the arrangement is. The harmonies created between Diana Ross' arching delivery, The Supremes chorus so far back in the mix, and the strings is just breathtaking.

  • @erdnre

This is one of those songs that prove that Berry knew exactly what he was doing, and where the girls strengths were. Flo in the background was no less vital to this hauntingly beautiful ballad than Diana in the lead. It simply would not have worked the other way around. I don't even think the girls fully understood this placing of their vocals, or there would have been less animosity over who sang leads. Such a shame. Hard to imagine, but they could have done so much more than they did.

As a child, Diana Ross was and still is my favorite artist and anytime the lady was on a television show, I had a ring side seat to watch her performance. Lol even now if she’s making an appearance on T.V., I rush to watch. She's also my dad's favorite singer. Wow! And the song is so smooth. I'm constantly pressing the replay button.

I bought the album at Woolworth's in 1969. I was 11 at the time. My mom had just taken us to see HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. Then she took us to Woolworth's for banana splits from the Woolworth Grill. I remember this like it was yesterday. I played this album to death on my old record changer. So where is the album today? It is in a photo frame, especially made for record albums, and will hang on my wall again, once I move. I bought 10 of those frames. HOLLAND DOZIER HOLLAND album made it into one of the 10. Says a lot for this album, in my head.

For the record the flip of "Baby Love" was "Ask Any Girl." There was some consideration of reissuing it as an A side following "Back in My Arms Again" and it was remastered to push Diana's lead forward and to shorten the length of the record. It was included on "More HIts by the Supremes" replacing at the last minute "Always in My Heart." "Ask Any GIrl" then became the topic of a lawsuit from Motown against the Len Barry song "One Two Three" because of a similar melody. Motown won.

Never in my life have I heard a voice like 1960s Diana Ross. The sonic equivalent to a diamond glistening in the sun. You can walk into any Southern black church and hear a Glady’s Knight or Jennifer Hudson (there are aplenty). But I have never heard a unique voice like Diana Ross, particularly her H-D-H work. Unique.

The Hollands and Lamont Dozier actually wanted to use Mary and Florence on lead with the hope they would at least find their way into the albums but did not get the opportunity. It didn't help that when Diana found Mary or Florence were recording leads she invariably caused a fuss. She didn't have to; her voice always would be the one on singles. But she seemed to have no ability to think beyond herself. That blessedly changed as she matured and became more thoughtful of others.
