I’ve tried 3-5 on multiple posts and my reach has plummeted in hashtags. I’m going to keep using 15-20. IG is playin with us ! Lol They key is to keep testing don’t just stick to 3-5, try all sorts of hashtags and never use the same ones. Keep mixing them up. They’ll probably change their minds next week again 🤣👍 I get that it helps to the algorithm to niche down, but cutting hashtags literally cuts your ability to be seen. I was ranking in TOP in most of my hashtags. If I use less, obviously now I’m not being shown to more people. I swear IG is playing with us lol

Thats very interesting - I did a test and yep I'm getting more "likes" using 2 to 3 hashtags on my most recent posts - The 30 tags seems to be on the way out... & yeah I think you guys are correct, maybe they do want people to stay on the platform and use it again! Wow ok 2-5 hastags is a big modification. I'm kinda glad because it's a less time consuming. I wasn't doing the 30 hashtags because I didin't have the time yet to create my bank of hashtags. So I'm happy before investing a lot of time to do. But really need to be careful with the 2-5 hashtags. I'm gonna test it out and if you have an update, let us now. Such an intesting subject.

Been hearing that a lot. You don't have to immediately go to the 3-5 hashtags, if you see more success with more hashtags then by all means do that. Since IG themselves announced this, it's going to happen and eventually you'll see a dip in engagement/reach so then you can move to fewer hashtags. Just do whatever works for you! - C

I did a post today using this strategy and it is the worst performing post we’ve ever had! Maybe I used the wrong ones. Like they were too big or something. I’ll try to be more strategic with the next post but wow. Was not expecting that.

Here in germany some IG people told us to use 3-5 hashtags since the beginning of 2021. I am still using about 20-25 hashtags and getting something between 50k-700k impressions from hashtags every time. I noticed that gaining followers from hashtags is much harder atm but maymbe its only a problem in my niche (Portrait Photographer). I think the new statement by IG to use only 3-5 hashtags is kinda like a spam prevention. And i honestly have no clue why this "Tips for Using Hashtags Post" on the creators account is posted as a video carousel. Maybe also a secret hint.
Hey Seb, that's super interesting, was it internal IG employees telling you to use 3-5 hashtags? Interesting, so perhaps it is just a spam reduction thing. We're still in testing, probably will need to test for quite some time to see how it goes, so I'm extra curious to try 3-5 for a while and then randomly test 30 hashtags and see how that goes. It's not just about algorithm, it's about social circles. Bigger influencers have a wider social circle, which is why they are okay with 0-5 hashtags. That info is true but only applies to people that are already content creators and have other platforms to share their content. I have multiple anonymous accounts that I've been using for more than a year. The ones with 3-5 hashtags did little to nothing. While the posts with more than 10 hashtags performed better, let alone 20-30 hashtags. The way I think it works is...you have a small group of quality content creators compared to the huge number of users that are trying to take off. Those quality creators use little to no hashtags and get a lot more views and activity going on. Eventually the millions of random users start using lots of hashtags to get more views. Causing a lot of saturated spaces and distributed content. Thus, the quality content gets lost among the trash content. Instagram doesn't want that because it makes it more difficult to randomly find quality content from content creators and influencers. Thus, they tell us that 0-5 hashtags is the ideal because they know quality creators can work with that, at the same time Instagram reduces the saturation from trash content (if random users use 0-5 tags) I think this is just a strategy from Instagram, but hey, this is just my theory after testing different methods for several months with different accounts.
Thanks for the vid! You've been my go to source for Insta news and how tos for a while now. Not a big fan of this change. I like having 30 hashtags at my disposal. Limiting the hashtags to 3-5 will potentially limit visibility and reach. So, I don't really understand at this point how this is supposed to help creators/pages in general. Maybe the algorithm will compensate from a different side.

All their announcements this year I've found not to be true for my account. The more I reduce my hashtags the worse my posts do. They also announced that anything with the tiktok logo on would be suppressed in the search but my best performing reels have their logo.

Hi Leslie, I wouldn't worry too much about that because those posts are way out of the algorithm and won't be fed to anyone, so the hashtags themselves don't matter quite as much. For the long-tail type of stuff, I can see it having some value but I wouldn't spend a ton of time on it. - C

It was actually there for one day, I didn't receive any additional likes, comments, calls or messages. But it looked good as the profile pic and #1 in the featured posts, even if for one day.

Does it matter the size of the account? What about feed posts vs reels vs IGTV vs video? I wonder if the ideal number of hashtags is different for each content form.
The size of the account shouldn't matter, IG didn't specify that. They didn't differentiate between content types in their announcement, so we'd suggest to keep the same strategy for all. They weren't differentiated previously, either, with the old strategy so I wouldn't recommend changing that now. Thanks for watching! - C
Surprised you guys haven't heard about the hashtags in the caption. I heard about that maybe a year or so ago. Just made more sense anyways to me. Comments are for "comments" not an extension of your caption.
Hey James, oh we definitely knew about them our decision was purely for aesthetic purposes because the hashtags in caption looked very clunky, and the algorithm still picked them up in the comments section. That's completely up to you. It's an aesthetic choice so if the hashtags are part of your caption itself then the way you suggested can work. You can also put a line at the end and add them under there, that's what we've been doing. No rules! - C

How about mixing hashtags #️⃣ depending on the number of followers. Divide hashtags into 3 buckets - Small, Medium and Large and then combine the same into 3 to 5 hashtags per post as suggested by Instagram.
Im still gonna use 3-5 in main/caption, then the rest in 1st Comment still. Unless they actually limit it altogether. A lot of people don't look up the hashtag that can be bad or fazed out. I do see people using 3 - 5.

Hi! Instagram changed their hashtag suggestions in October 2021, so we tested it until this video. Last month, we ran an analysis on the performance of 30 hashtags vs 3-5 hashtags for a client, and 30 hashtags outperformed 5 by 600%, so we'd recommend reverting back to our 30 hashtag strategy. - C

I’d rather play around with 5 that don’t work than 30 lol. Choosing 30 is time consuming even with hashtag expert bc my account is so small. They always tell me it will be hard for me to place. The ones they give me are random and rarely have the content im posting. I can get 5 all on my own.

In fact Instagram doesn't give us (probably intentionally, because they sell reach, and they want people succeed but never be so much successful ;-]) the most important number about hashtags. The metric offered, how many posts have a specific hashtag, is meaningless. Is possible that so many businesses are using right now hashtags that *nobody* is following. In fact is even probable. So if you pick a tag that is mistakenly used for a lot of people, the only thing you're doing is jumping on a really crowded sinking boat. The only really relevant metric about hashtags to pick one is how many people are *following* it: how many people are interested on this or that subject on time. As we don't have this because Instagram don't want to, we need to find out with try and error. And a really killing metric should be analytics about what tag on a post is being responsible to what amount of reach. This could help to understand what is working and what isn't.
Agreed that because they want to sell ads/reach they may not disclose the real number of hashtags that we should be using (even though Adam said otherwise, who knows really). Also agreed re whether people are following a hashtag is a better idea of which hashtags to use, same with the reach per hashtag. If we had those two metrics, we'd be able to make better hashtag decisions. Thanks for your input! - C
0-5 hashtags do nothing if you're starting from zero. Those numbers only work for people who are already content creators and influencers and have other pages to share their content. Thus, having an advantage in social circles While 20-30 hashtags actually work for someone who is literally a nobody, which is most of us, let's face it And of course, the type of content you share matters, if you are a pretty girl showing skin, you're more likely to make it work with just a few hashtags, even from zero. But even if that's the case, I don't recommend using less than 10 if you're just starting out from zero. I've actually created different anonymous accounts with no sharing to boost views, and tested this. The one account where I show some sexy skin and use 20-30 hashtags is the one that has grown the fastest and has the most likes. It started from zero. While another art account with 3-5 hashtags remained pretty much dead until I started adding more. Still doesn't reach the numbers of my "e-girl experimental account" but you get the point.
If a photo or video need 30 keywords to be described, this is a very confused photo or video, right? I think that is what Instagram team is trying to say. Only because the platform have a physical capsize, doesn't mean you should reach it. in fact limits were not meant to be reached

Wow ok 2-5 hastags is a big modification. I'm kinda glad because it's a less time consuming. I wasn't doing the 30 hashtags because I didin't have the time yet to create my bank of hashtags. So I'm happy before investing a lot of time to do. But really need to be careful with the 2-5 hashtags. I'm gonna test it out and if you have an update, let us now. Such an intesting subject.

So I did 2 posts using 5 hashtags. Both got less than 25% less reach engagement etc than the 2 posts before them. All with similar topics.
Been hearing that a lot. You don't have to immediately go to the 3-5 hashtags, if you see more success with more hashtags then by all means do that. Since IG themselves announced this, it's going to happen and eventually you'll see a dip in engagement/reach so then you can move to fewer hashtags. Just do whatever works for you! - C

I did a post today using this strategy and it is the worst performing post we’ve ever had! Maybe I used the wrong ones. Like they were too big or something. I’ll try to be more strategic with the next post but wow. Was not expecting that.

Here in germany some IG people told us to use 3-5 hashtags since the beginning of 2021. I am still using about 20-25 hashtags and getting something between 50k-700k impressions from hashtags every time. I noticed that gaining followers from hashtags is much harder atm but maymbe its only a problem in my niche (Portrait Photographer). I think the new statement by IG to use only 3-5 hashtags is kinda like a spam prevention. And i honestly have no clue why this "Tips for Using Hashtags Post" on the creators account is posted as a video carousel. Maybe also a secret hint.
Hey Seb, that's super interesting, was it internal IG employees telling you to use 3-5 hashtags? Interesting, so perhaps it is just a spam reduction thing. We're still in testing, probably will need to test for quite some time to see how it goes, so I'm extra curious to try 3-5 for a while and then randomly test 30 hashtags and see how that goes. It's not just about algorithm, it's about social circles. Bigger influencers have a wider social circle, which is why they are okay with 0-5 hashtags. That info is true but only applies to people that are already content creators and have other platforms to share their content.
I have multiple anonymous accounts that I've been using for more than a year. The ones with 3-5 hashtags did little to nothing. While the posts with more than 10 hashtags performed better, let alone 20-30 hashtags.
The way I think it works is...you have a small group of quality content creators compared to the huge number of users that are trying to take off. Those quality creators use little to no hashtags and get a lot more views and activity going on. Eventually the millions of random users start using lots of hashtags to get more views. Causing a lot of saturated spaces and distributed content. Thus, the quality content gets lost among the trash content. Instagram doesn't want that because it makes it more difficult to randomly find quality content from content creators and influencers. Thus, they tell us that 0-5 hashtags is the ideal because they know quality creators can work with that, at the same time Instagram reduces the saturation from trash content (if random users use 0-5 tags)
I think this is just a strategy from Instagram, but hey, this is just my theory after testing different methods for several months with different accounts.

Not a big fan of this change. I like having 30 hashtags at my disposal. Limiting the hashtags to 3-5 will potentially limit visibility and reach. So, I don't really understand at this point how this is supposed to help creators/pages in general. Maybe the algorithm will compensate from a different side.

I feel that, it's a strange. I'm inclined to agree that the algorithm is changing and therefore 30 hashtags aren't necessary. I think it's wise to test - try some posts with 30 (in caption and in comments, alternate between them), try the 3-5 with different combos, and see what sticks for you. All their announcements this year I've found not to be true for my account. The more I reduce my hashtags the worse my posts do. They also announced that anything with the tiktok logo on would be suppressed in the search but my best performing reels have their logo.

Hi Leslie, I wouldn't worry too much about that because those posts are way out of the algorithm and won't be fed to anyone, so the hashtags themselves don't matter quite as much. For the long-tail type of stuff, I can see it having some value but I wouldn't spend a ton of time on it. - C

This makes so much sense for my account! I used to get thousands to my account with hashtags and now I'm lucky if it is around 100. THANK YOU. Question though - have they pulled that function to hit the "promote" button to pretend you were going to pay for an ad, but instead saved to see what hashtags performed well? What about feed posts vs reels vs IGTV vs video? I wonder if the ideal number of hashtags is different for each content form.
The size of the account shouldn't matter, IG didn't specify that. They didn't differentiate between content types in their announcement, so we'd suggest to keep the same strategy for all. They weren't differentiated previously, either, with the old strategy so I wouldn't recommend changing that now. Thanks for watching! - C

Hey James, oh we definitely knew about them our decision was purely for aesthetic purposes because the hashtags in caption looked very clunky, and the algorithm still picked them up in the comments section. That's completely up to you. It's an aesthetic choice so if the hashtags are part of your caption itself then the way you suggested can work. You can also put a line at the end and add them under there, that's what we've been doing. No rules! - C

I've tested with different batches of 4-5 hashtags, and the results are not as good as with 20-30 hashtags. Maybe it's just for stories? Thanks for your awesome content btw!!!
A lot of folks are saying that, we're still in testing mode but seems quite common! It's not just for Stories, IG specifically mentioned it was for in-feed posts. If you were seeing better results, you could try going back to 30 hashtags and see how that goes. Thanks so much for watching! - C
How about mixing hashtags #️⃣ depending on the number of followers. Divide hashtags into 3 buckets - Small, Medium and Large and then combine the same into 3 to 5 hashtags per post as suggested by Instagram.
If you go back to our original hashtag videos, that was our strategy, however our analysis found that 3-5 hashtags doesn't work so well. - C
Im still gonna use 3-5 in main/caption, then the rest in 1st Comment still. Unless they actually limit it altogether. A lot of people don't look up the hashtag that can be bad or fazed out. I do see people using 3 - 5.

Thank you! What a coincidence :) In our old hashtag strategy, we say to use 15 x niche (less than 100k), 10 x medium (100-999k) and 5 x large (1 milli +). Now, we're in testing mode. We'd suggest to use different combos of 5 tags in the caption, eg 3 x niche and 2 x medium, 5 x niche, 5 x large, 3 x medium and 2 x large etc. Mix it up, test like crazy, that's what we're doing! - C

I think this isn't a quick thing to decide on, the algorithm is always changing so it could just be a matter of time before the 3-5 hashtags gets priority, for example. Most people are saying that 30 hashtags work better for sure, it's just still only been a few weeks so personally I'm not convinced enough yet. Having 30 hashtags in the caption is super ugly lol, we're really not a fan but if you're going to go back to 30, try testing them in both the caption and comment and see if there's any difference - I'd be curious! - C

Hi! Instagram changed their hashtag suggestions in October 2021, so we tested it until this video. Last month, we ran an analysis on the performance of 30 hashtags vs 3-5 hashtags for a client, and 30 hashtags outperformed 5 by 600%, so we'd recommend reverting back to our 30 hashtag strategy. - C

Hi Miguel, I'd use hashtags in the language of the intended audience. If that audience speaks a variety of languages, you'd need to either keep them mixed or pick one language per post (align the hashtags with the language of the copy). Thanks for watching! - C

In fact Instagram doesn't give us (probably intentionally, because they sell reach, and they want people succeed but never be so much successful ;-]) the most important number about hashtags.
The metric offered, how many posts have a specific hashtag, is meaningless. Is possible that so many businesses are using right now hashtags that *nobody* is following. In fact is even probable. So if you pick a tag that is mistakenly used for a lot of people, the only thing you're doing is jumping on a really crowded sinking boat.
The only really relevant metric about hashtags to pick one is how many people are *following* it: how many people are interested on this or that subject on time. As we don't have this because Instagram don't want to, we need to find out with try and error.
And a really killing metric should be analytics about what tag on a post is being responsible to what amount of reach. This could help to understand what is working and what isn't.
Agreed that because they want to sell ads/reach they may not disclose the real number of hashtags that we should be using (even though Adam said otherwise, who knows really). Also agreed re whether people are following a hashtag is a better idea of which hashtags to use, same with the reach per hashtag. If we had those two metrics, we'd be able to make better hashtag decisions. Thanks for your input! - C
0-5 hashtags do nothing if you're starting from zero. Those numbers only work for people who are already content creators and influencers and have other pages to share their content. Thus, having an advantage in social circles
While 20-30 hashtags actually work for someone who is literally a nobody, which is most of us, let's face it
And of course, the type of content you share matters, if you are a pretty girl showing skin, you're more likely to make it work with just a few hashtags, even from zero. But even if that's the case, I don't recommend using less than 10 if you're just starting out from zero.
I've actually created different anonymous accounts with no sharing to boost views, and tested this. The one account where I show some sexy skin and use 20-30 hashtags is the one that has grown the fastest and has the most likes. It started from zero.
While another art account with 3-5 hashtags remained pretty much dead until I started adding more. Still doesn't reach the numbers of my "e-girl experimental account" but you get the point.
Less HTs just means you have to post more, carousels n vids take less HT on them, so it makes sense kinda.

If a photo or video need 30 keywords to be described, this is a very confused photo or video, right?
I think that is what Instagram team is trying to say.
Only because the platform have a physical capsize, doesn't mean you should reach it. in fact limits were not meant to be reached
Interesting perspective. I wouldn't suggest that hashtags were used as a descriptor (or at least they weren't intended to be), it was more for sharing and reach purposes. You could be right! - C

@@taylorlivest9346 Ah I see. So some hashtags, for no real reason that we're aware of, just don't show Reels. Also, your post would have to perform well to be able to see it in a hashtag section (unless it's a hashtag that hasn't been used much). - C
