    When it's scorching hot I go out with the hose and wet the area under the trees where there's deep shade. The whole flock goes and hangs out there (beaks close again and all is well.) I also add frozen berries (when we have extra) and ice cubes to the open water tubs.

      Texas here.. Shade tarps, box fan, frozen blocks, AND the biggest help has been spraying down the ground in their shaded area where they all go. I soak the ground which keeps it cooler and the fan blowing the moist, evaporating air makes a big difference. Oh, and I give them frozen peas, chilled watermelon or something each day.

      @@phs2937 Here's my bathing ritual for my main hen, a big Buff Orp: I gently lower Goldie into a washtub of barely cool water that's just above her buttfluff. The whole time, I'm stroking her and crooning to her in a soothing voice. As she settles into the water, I massage her spine and gently lift her wings away from her body with one hand while I pour water under her wings with a cupped hand. The underfluff is water-resistant, so I rub it gently underwater like I'm shampooing it to work the water to the follicles. I make sure to lift her hackle feathers and get cool water on her neck. Goldie seems to like it...until I lift her out of the drink and she beats the bejesus out of me with her wings, then splashes me right in my glasses and face as she shakes off and harrumphs at me.

    In middle TN and I have been freezing all bottles and place them under their coop area - we built up so they would have access to a lower level for weather and hotter days - in front of box fans.
    I use 3 gallon waterers that have lids (gosh I love them! SO easy to clean and fill up with the hose) so I place frozen half gallon jugs in them every few hours.
    They also have a deep rubber feeding trough we placed clay bricks in (shady area) and refresh water in their 'pool' - the Juvies took to it faster than my OGs but now everyone is standing there on the cool bricks (chickens cool down by feet getting wet too thankfully) or sprawled out.
    We just ordered misting tubes as my son showed me his set up for his turkeys and they love it with the chickens flying up and over to join in for a cool down.
    While we planned out the run for sunny days in winter and shady areas for summer months, this heat is oppressive and I have several chicken mama's I follow on IG who have lost favorites in this heat already. So I have sun shade tarps coming Friday. Cannot hurt!

Also for my goats I bought a ryobi fan which I freeze icecream buckets of water and put the in a 5 gallon bucket and I put fan in top of the bucket so it blows cool air. My husband and I are working to build a flock of our own along with a colony of rabbits to raise together in a racken house. We live in a little house on the prairie, our summers get really hot some years, and our winters can get pretty darn cold. I have always wanted brahmas, and my husband is stuck on buckeyes (for good reasons... mostly). I'm a little proud of the buckeye because it is the only breed developed by a woman, they are a great dual purpose bird which I need, the roosters aren't overly aggressive, and they love to forage. My husband pointed them out because there are only around 5,000 of them around today, and the roosters roar like a 🦕 🤣🤣🤣. I was leary to get them because I only live on a 1/3 acre lot, and I will have to keep them in a run so they don't get into my neighbors yards. Then, I started learning more about keeping chickens and decided I'm just going to build my compost pile in their run to offset my feed cost and give them something to forage in (I'll let them maintain my compost pile for me, I don't mind).That will also keep a food source at hand for the brahmas so I don't have any canabalistic incidents. A little part of me hopes I can breed a brahma sized buckeye so my husband can have a giant roaring chicken. Even though I live on the great plains, I cannot thank you enough for the information I have learned from watching your channel. I didn't know how much I didn't know about keeping chickens...

    The way you edited clips of your son had me CRACKING UP!! He totally knew you were going to troll him 😂 You seem like the coolest mom ❤ Thanks for the tips. I’ll have to figure something else out for my situation in south Louisiana, but you are absolutely correct…. Heat is heat, and whether the temps are in the 90’s or 110’s, our chickens will be miserable. It’s not a competition over who lives in the hottest climate (I would happily volunteer to lose such a competition…sigh). I definitely recommend saving plastic bottles to freeze, the bigger the better! They take much longer to melt than ice cubes do. Very important when the temps soar and you won’t be home to replace the ice. And yes, styrofoam is the forbidden snack that chickens can’t seem to get enough of 🙄😂

    I purchased a soap mold which is about 4x2x2 and freeze water in it. I put the ice in a shady spot and it takes about 4 hours to melt in 100°F weather which gets them through the hottest part of the day. I’ll also flood their shade area with the hose water. Lastly, I’ll give them frozen fruit to peck at or if they’re little blueberries they gulp them down quick. I notice very quick recovery with the last two tricks. They’ll stop panting after a literal minute and wander around like it’s not roasting out.

    I am lucky that our property is mostly wooded. Our coops and runs are in shade, and its always about 15 degrees cooler under the trees. We only have to employ additional temperature control measures on the few super hot days we get here each year. We wet down the run, put ice in their water, feed them cold watermelon, cucumber, etc. and I have a couple small fans to move air through the coops if needed.

  • @AgainsttheGrainHomestead
    @AgainsttheGrainHomestead 2 роки тому +2

    The ice cooler is a great idea, and I believe that would definitely help, but I have a question about the misters or anything that would add moisture to the area. I'm sure what I'm about to say won't apply to every location, but it's something to take into account. Humidity. We have had two weeks during June and this week as well where we have been under a heat advisory. This week our heat indexes are 110F. With actual temps for a couple days of 100+ all other days are high 90s. Last week was the same, but we had real temps at 105F on one day. The high temps is one thing, but the humidity has been the killer. The humidity is so so high that the we're having trouble cooling off because when the humidity is too high your body can't evaporate the sweat.
    We've noticed when the humidity is as high as it is, and we spray things down, while it's being sprayed it's nice, but once we quit spraying, that area is MUCH more humid and seems to be even hotter than before, almost sauna like.
    If people aren't dealing with the humidity then go and spray areas down, but please take into account humidity.
    Great video! I always enjoy them.

I blow the fan right across that area and it feels like ac downwind. They love it! When the block of ice melts, I just swap it out. Mostly I find them sitting ON the ice-jug. I can't blame them. It's been beastly!
    also i have the same mix in a big-dog 2 1/2 gal water-dispenser thing with a round basin that is the perfect size for a 32-ish oz plastic bottle of ice that I swap out a couple times a day. Thankfully I had that in storage for some reason for years. I couldn't afford to buy one at today's prices!
    plus i have another fan where they like to dust (not so hard it blows dust though). When it's brutal I water the area around the coop and even (mostly accidentally) moisten the ground a little. I am afraid to get them wet. I've heard it's bad. But you have a mister, so I'm thinking a little is okay? If they choose it? They seem so clever about taking care of themselves!
    i've seen them panting some, and an occasional fluffy-wing thing, but so far the evening comes before they really start to suffer. So grateful at the end of every day that we made it! They are only 11 weeks old so i worry a LOT.

    I'm trying other tricks. I hung a reflective solar sheet over the henyard. I only had one, but I had a DollarTree glittery holographic tablecloth and its underside reflects sunlight, too. It's lowered the temp several degrees. And my spaghetti cooker's steaming away on my porch steps. Hens love chilled 'sketti noodles! The noodles go right from the 'fridge and into my ecstatic birds.

    • @Susie_Floozie
      @Susie_Floozie 2 роки тому

      Also, cut a few circular holes in the plastic sheet for rain drainage--straight cuts will tear, so I cut some halfcircles on the edges when it's folded. I forgot to do it with the tablecover, and at 6am I came out to find a huge holographic bladder hanging down about to burst! When I tried to make a small hole in it, the stressed plastic split open and soaked me with rainwater. Funsies!

    I use the misters and freeze around 20 various sized plastic bottles. I put the frozen plastic bottles in their water buckets, and rotate them a couple of times a day. That seems to work pretty well for them. If it gets close to 100, I'll hose off their run also.

    I freeze cottage cheese containers, and then I put the big fat Ice Cube in their water. They have a fan that blows on their nesting area in the coop. And we use misters as well! My ghod, their lust for styrofoam is maddening! They can find it anywhere. I try to keep it out of their beaks--anything with foil, too. I had a little golden Comet who was an invalid, and my vet was baffled. When she died, I gave her a Viking funeral on cedar logs, and when I was collecting her ashes to put in a reliquary, I found strips of nibbled aluminum foil in her charred guts. Later I located the source--a piece of wood that I covered with foil to use as a shelf. I retired it to the garage, where Jeri found it. I could see where she'd torn off strips to eat them. WHAT THE HELL. It broke my heart to know how she got that way. I had no idea!

    Lol I just also wanted to say- our cold time is pretty much over here in good ole Florida... My feather babies were born early September so they've never experienced real heat yet and are temps are barely hot yet but they are roaming around panting like it's 150 degrees out already 😂... Lord help me. I keep telling them you all think this is hot???!!! Lol y'all haven't felt anything yet!! They have soooooooo much shade to be under with all of the trees and tarps over their run and house but they are already acting like this is the absolute worst heat ever!!!! So I will do the ice cubes in their water and grind up frozen veggies for snacks, and I love your a/c for them - I will have to make a couple of those to help them through. We get REALLY hot and nasty humid here. My beautiful fluffy silkie/buff orpington mix is the fluffiest and hottest 😢. He's so freaking amazingly gorgeous buuuuut all those hot fluffy feathers holy WOW 😮... I feel really bad for silkies in the heat we get here. I feel like they're huskies stuck here in the Florida heat. I feel bad. So I'm going to try to make him and all of them as comfortable as I can ❤.

    I have a mister but haven't used it yet. It's so humid. I don't want to make it more so. I have a 11 gallon water tank that I drop in a frozen 64 oz juice bottle( filled with water) each morning. They spend a lot of their time under the elevated coop. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to work on their run shade. The old tarp over their run died. I'll have to look up the frozen treats and maybe get a solar fan.

    I do like the air conditioner idea. I’ll give that a try. 😊
    Another idea I seen was making lily pads in the kiddy pools for them to stand on.

    I’m in southeast Texas. It’s been up to 108 for the past couple weeks. My americaunas are very heat tolerant and are doing pretty well. Then I have a girl who is a mixed breed (Cochin and Easter egger as near as we can tell). She’s fully feathered, has a thick under coat, and even has feathers on her feet. She HATES these temps. She keep slipping back into brooding. I’ve bathed her in a kiddy wading pool, I’ve put fans in her for the entire day (for several days). At these temps, ice melts insanely fast. My next plan is to put her in a dog kennel and let her sleep in the house where the AC is on. At least she’ll catch a break overnight. During the day, she’ll still overheat.
    I’m running out of ideas.
