Maybe you wonder how to choose correct passes or ticket especially what is the most variable ticket for you. Today I will advise for you. First please check the plan of your Japan travel. Case 1. For example, you land at Tokyo, and go to Osaka and after Fukuoka, and next go to Hokkaido. Kind of this with long distance travel, you should get the JR Pass. Because JR Pass is good for the long distance travel. Case 2. You enjoy only one city, especially in Tokyo. For example you want to visit the Akihabara for anime store, and after you go to the TokyoTower, and enjoying the Asakusa Sensoji... In this case, you should get IC pass. IC pass is not a free pass, but if you use the IC pass, very useful when you ride the subway. In this case I think you don't need to get the JR Pass. Case 3. You arrived at Haneda Airport, after you go to Osaka and enjoying Osaka and the Kyoto and Nara. In this case you should get JR Pass and some kind of IC pass like SUICA or ICOCA. Because in Osaka or Kyoto or Nara, a major sightseeing place is near to the JR line. Maybe you often use the JR line. You should get the JR Pass. Adding this, the price of JR Pass is very reasonable compare to the real price of Shinkansen. If you use a Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka almost the same as the JR Pass. Of course it depends on the length of the term. But if you go to Osaka or Kyoto, that's the kind of Kansai area, you should get the JR Pass. And for your convenience, gets some kind of IC pass. f your plan is only near Tokyo, you also have option "JR Tokyo Wide Pass". It can use in the Tokyo and around areas. For example, Kawaguchiko (it's near from Mt.Fuji), Nikko, Kusatsu, Karuizawa, and Izu. If you use JR Tokyo wide pass, you can freely use the trains. and price is more reasonable than JR Pass. If your plan is in Kansai area, you also choose "Kansai Thru Pass". It's looks like JR Tokyo wide pass, very similer. If your plan is only in Kansai area, like Osaka, Kyoto or so, you can choose that pass. Let's check your plan and choose a good passes for you.
Very informative! Thank you very much 💯

Thank you so much for your video, it is very clear and it is helpful to see how it looks in the train stations. I have not been to japan in a long time so I was worried it would be very different. But your video helped me. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for the info. Very helpful.

Amazing video - very informative. Thank you so much for your content. Subscribed.
Oh! Thank you so much!! I'll do my best for making new informative videos! Thank you!
@@liljapan Of course, you have some great videos that are very helpful when planning for our trip. One question if you don’t mind, does the Suica card work on the Narita Express from Narita to Tokyo station or do I need to buy a separate ticket for that? Or is it better to take the train and use the Suica card? Many thanks.
Thank you very much. it's very useful for me to travel in Japan.
Glad it was helpful!
Very useful information sir. Thank you very much. 😂
Thank you!
You are a very friendly and kind hearted Japanese person ( they all are ). I am coming to Japan on May 02 , for a week.
I hope to catch the cherry blossom in Hokkaido ( since this is the last place to bloom ),
also planning to visit Fujisan, Kyoto and Osaka.
The itinerary is very tight but doable, and a JR pass would surely help !!
You have many plans in Japan, cool! Enjoy!!
Jake-san, thank you for your helpful video! I use a spreadsheet and ticket prices information from google maps and hyperdia to calculate how much I would spend on JR tickets to justify my purchase of JR Pass. For my next visit, I already calculated that I would save roughly JPY67.5k (or $500) per person if I use a 7 days JR Pass! The downside is, I have to move around as many cities as possible during those 7 days period lol. My itinerary will be Fukuoka - Nagasaki - Hiroshima - Okayama - Nagoya - Tokyo. The biggest saving is going to be the usage of JR Pass on Nobi Nobi seat on Sunrise Seto/Izumi leaving from Okayama to Tokyo, I hope I can secure the reservation through online booking 1 month before.
Wow! You made great saving!! Enjoy your train travel in Japan!! Thank you for your comment ☺️
Very helpful, as always! You clearly understand the concerns of a first-time Japan visit. I have gotten my whole trip mapped out on the English NAVITIME app. It's very good. Their website is also nice in English but if you try to share your created trip, it appears to link to the Japanese app only - just information for anyone else that might be curious. I haven't been able to use the English site and English app in conjunction.
Forgive me for asking more questions, but this is something I have been trying to clarify. So if I buy a Suica card to get around locally in Tokyo, can I also use it to get around locally in Kyoto? Sometimes it seems the IC cards are regional sometimes it sounds like they work everywhere.
Thank you for information, I'll check it. (I may ask you again about what)
About SUICA, you can use it in almost all trains and buses in Japan, but some specific lines doesn't accept it.
I have a whole collection of IC cards - they work almost everywhere now (in the past they didn't)
There are a handful of places where they don't work - some niche private lines etc i've had trouble with...
Hi Jake! Great video!
If you're boarding a bus that accepts a JR Pass, do you tap the JR pass the same way as an IC card?
Nice video.. I'm an Australian and have visited Japan a number of times and I would say the utility of the JR Pass varies depending on your pattern of travel.
I think the Pass is best if you are flying in and out of the same city (eg. Tokyo) and effectively wanting to travel every day (ie. new city every night) on a fairly rapid journey of Japan.
If however you say fly in and out of different cities (eg into Fukoaka and out of Tokyo) or want to spend multiple days at various cities, then you might be better off buying single rail tickets. In addition this allows booking the quicker Nozomi trains.
Also some other passes you might want to consider such as the Hakone Freepass (Hakone is the onsen area around the base of Mt Fuji)
The IC passes (Suica, Pasmo, Icoca) are for the city based Metro trains and these days mostly interoperable.
Thank you for your nice comment!!
It all depends on WHEN you planning to do the LONGER trip. For example if you are doing 3 weeks and doing Tokyo-Osaka on day 7 and then Osaka-Kyoto on day 14 and Kyoto-Tokyo on day 18, therefore your option is 21-days JR Pass but this is not necessarily the best option. In this example, it all depends on how often do you ride train in the Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto itself then add the Shinkansen (Nozomi) and compare it to the 21-days JR. Good chance is that 21-days JR Pass is more expensive then 2x Nozomi + Suica/Pasmo.
But if you are doing 7 days trip and you go like nuts Tokyo-Osaka-Kyoto-Hiroshima-Fukuoka then back to Tokyo in 7 days then yes 7-days JR Pass would be worth it.
Great idea! It's important how many days they ride the long distance trains. You are great!
Hi Jake. I'll be visiting Japan for the first time, your video is so informative and well detailed.
Although I'm still in doubt whether to purchased Icoca or Jr Pass or Kansai Pass.
I'll be travelling from & to:
Manila > KIX > Kyoto (4 days) > Nara (1 day) > Osaka ( 4 days) > KIX > Manila
Hope you can advise me which of those should I purchased 😢
My recommendation is below.
*Get IC pass like ICOCA
*Get the 'Kansai wide area excursion pass' ; duration is 3 days from the last day of Kyoto, Nara, the first day of Osaka.
In Kyoto, you might be difficult to get on the public transportations, because it's crowded, use trains, buses, taxies according to the situation.
The duration of Kansai pass is 3 days, use it when you use trains with long distance.
I'm glad if you can use it as a reference.
Nice video and very useful about travel options in japan. please share about Tourist unlimited rides of metro, bus, rail, subways, mono rail of one day pass 3 day pass, 7 day pass. Which one is good, where can we buy. where can we use. cost of passes. is it good to have a foreign tourist to have 3 or 7 days pass or IC pass.
Thanks for your comment. Will try.
Thank you alot for your helpful Video ! I will be in Japan to study for half a year which means i have a 1-year visa and not a tourist visa. As far as i understood i wont be able to buy a JR-Pass, but still would like to travel for about a week until university starts.
Is there a any kind of railway pass i could use in the kyoto/osaka-area? Or do i have to buy normal tickets for every ride ?
I recommend you to "Keihanshin area pass". This is reasonable ticket.
How to get this pass is
1. Get " Osaka rakuyu pass"
2. After you can get "Keihanshin area pass".
Thanks for sharing this video. I have some question if we will travel around Osaka Kyoto Nara and Kobe is IC enough? Or need or buy JR pass? Thanks 😊
If you ride shinkansen, you should get JR Pass. JR Pass and long distance train is good combination.
Very informative video. I'm doing a solo trip to Japan in 2024 and planning to get a JR Pass too. Osaka-Kyoto-Fukuoka-Nagasaki-Kagoshima-Osaka. One qn, is the ICOCA card usable in parts of Kyushu, fukuoka and nagasaki in particular?
If you want to visit in some cities for sightseeing, IC passes are worth for you. Enjoy your stay!
Hi Jake thanks for this great video! If traveling with children, do they each need their own IC card, or can we share one IC card as a family when going through gates? Thanks!
Thanks for your comment. When you use IC card, you need the same number of IC cards as your members. For your child fare is half price of adult, you need a IC card for child (e.g. Kid's Welcome SUICA)
I don't want to carry paper tickets at all. Isn't there a one-card/app-to-rule-them-all like in most developed countries?
Thank you for your helpful video! One question - at the ticket or SUICA vending machines, can I use a credit card? Or only cash?
I check about it now, when you get SUICA with machine, you can't use credit cards without JR company published credit card. It means only cash... Thank you for your comment!
@@liljapan Arigato! so, first stop at Narita will be currency station or ATM :) I appreciate your advice!
Thank you for information, I would ask Can I use Suica card in metro Osaka & Kyoto?
Yes, you can use it!
I will be arriving at Kansai airport & going to Kyoto right away. Will be in Kyoto for couple of days for some sightseeing then go to Osaka for a few days. Should I get the JR pass or buy IC pass? Can i use IC pass from airport to Kyoto? Where can I get the Kansai Thru Pass?
Maybe you need only Kansai thru pass. More details, check here; www.surutto.com/tickets/kansai_thru_english.html
For more your convenience, it's also ok to get IC pass.
Your vital information is very much appreciated. However, my question is from haneda airport how to use buses to get to Osaka?.. planning to go October.. thank's soooooooo much for your time much appreciated.
mmm..? Does it means I should go to Osaka by bus? mmm? I already have the plan to visit to Osaka...? It means... lol
Thank you for your comment!! Yes, I'll do it!
Are you sure you want to take a bus from Haneda airport to Osaka? It will take 8-9 hours at least if you travel by bus.
@@liljapan We are thinking riding the bus we see more along the way. Next choice is by train. This is our first time coming to Japan. We would like to see Osaka and Kyoto. Thank's soooooooo much for sharing your experience.
Are there subscriptions that allow me to use buses and trains as much as I want in a certain area. Or can I also take buses with e.g. the Kansai Thru Pass?
You can get on busses with Kansai thru pass. Although in case of JR Pass you can't.
Hey Jake, do i have to do a seat reservation for the Shinkansen when i use the JR pass ?
Just in case.
e.g. From Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka , it's Tokaido Shinkansen, you don't need to reserve. They run frequently.
Hi. I'll be visitng Osaka first, then will use JR pass to go to Tokyo. Which of the two IC cards should I buy that can be used in both cities? ICOCA or Suica?
Either are OK! You can choose as you like.
I’ll be inJapan on November and will be there for 2 weeks. I’m planning to go to Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka. Is it better to get suica?
Yes, I recommend to get some kind of IC pass. If you get it, it will make your transportation smoothly.
im flying this upcoming November, we will be traveling Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. we already purchase de JRticket, is it still neccessary to get an extra ticket card as ICOCA for traveling inside each site (city) , or the same JR ticket can be used inside the city for riding buses?
Japan Rail Pass is published by JR company, you can use only JR lines. In some cities like Kyoto, Tokyo, you will use not JR lines including subways. If you get IC passes, it becomes convenient to use all trains, subways, buses.
thank you very much.@@liljapan
So if im gonna be all around osaka and tokyo i should get a jr and ic pass?
Before October 1st, my answer is "yes". You can use JR Pass with JR lines and IC pass can be used at subways.
Do I need to get both kansai through pass and ic pass if I m traveling between osaka kyoto nara universal studio?
If you can do it, it's convenient for you. But in case you won't get IC pass, only you have to do is each time paying cash for getting train tickets. No matter!
Hi, I will fly to Osaka from US, then go to Kyoto, then go to Yokohama for the cruise. Which pass is good for me? Thank you for your help.
Before September, JR Pass is good for you. If you come to Japan after October and it's only chance to ride Shinkansen Osaka to Tokyo and go back to Osaka, almost even you don't use Passes.
Hello! Very informative video thank you! Quick question, I plan on staying in Tokyo for about a week and then moving over to Kyoto and Osaka for the remainder of the trip and eventually return to Tokyo to leave from Haneda airport. Should I look at getting the JR pass? Will I be able to use the JR pass to get around areas within Tokyo or Kyoto/Osaka?
My answer is "yes". You should get JR Pass. In case of visiting Kyoto and Osaka from Tokyo, it's good condition to get it. When you ride trains in Tokyo area, if you choose "JR line", you can ride JR Pass. Subways are not acceptable with JR Pass, take care.
@@liljapansubways accept IC cards?
@@prasadmankar7650 Yes, you can!
@@liljapan thanks. Also I would like to know if I get a JR pass then will that be enough to roam around japan by train or do I need to take IC cards as well ?
I'll mostly visit all the major tourist attractions only in Tokyo, hakone, Kyoto, osaka, nara, Yokohama.
@@prasadmankar7650 To get IC pass is better, it'll make you comfortable when you get on trains.
14:24 I want to ask about this step, why in the video u are not tap out of the ic card from the bus?
In a city area, some kind of buses are flat fee. So you don't need to tap when you get off. In case of changing per distance, you have to tap again when getting off. Thank you for your comment ☺️
@@liljapan But how do i know which is flat fee, which is charging by distance? For safety sake, can i just tap out even if flat fee? Thank you.
Check the charge board in front of bus, next to driver, like this; ys223.blogspot.com/2018/03/blog-post_28.html?m=1
In this case, it's depend on distance.
What happen if using JR Pass I book seat, but miss train ( green class )? any fines in this case? or its flexible and I can miss it if not manage to get in time and take next?
Before departure time, you can change reservation but after it, you can't change. You have to reorder to book next train.
@@liljapan but no fines or any changes?
JR Pass includes reservation fee. You don't need additional fee.
Thanks lots of all tickets' information
Can I buy a ticket with a credit card ?
We are coming 4 people from 15 March to 28 March
You can't get some kinds of subway tickets with credit card. JR lines and some private railways, you can get it with credit card.
I made the video for you. Thank you for your good question comment. Enjoy your stay!

Hello Jack..
I have plan going to Osaka then aorund city..after that i will going to Kyoto then around the city..and last destination i move to Tokyo also around the city. So i need JR Pass with IC card or only enough JR pass?
Thank you.
I recommend you to get IC pass. Because if you get IC pass, the cost you have to pay is the same as getting tickets every time. (The difference is deposit fee for IC pass, 500JPY) Enjoy your stay 👍
@@liljapan HI Jack..thanks for your advice. If i want travel for multi city osaka-kyoto-tokyo-MT.fuji, so i need JR pass too right?
Yes, your idea is nice. When you visit MT.Fuji, you need another ticket for Fujikyu railway which is not JR.
@@liljapan Hi Jack ..The information you provide is very useful to me. Am very excited and can't wait to go to Japan soon. Thank you
@@masagung2695 Sure, enjoy your stay!
How much the Jr pass from osaka to kyoto, then kyoto to Tokyo?
It not depends on distance, on term like 7days, 14days,,,
When I visited Japan I remember having to board the bus using the centre doors and exiting at the front. Maybe this was in Kyoto.
Really, I come to know first! It's opposite from Tokyo's. Thank you for nice infomation!
Is it possible to book via web train ticket ( with seat selection ) without JR Pass?
Yes, when you get Shinkansen ticket on web site, you can reserve seats, but you can point only "aisle" or "window".
@@liljapan Found also smart-ex site which allow to book Shinkansen ( including fast Nazomi option which is not included in JR pass) with seat selection. + early reservation discount fare for green car: green carn just for +1430 YEN comparing to standard car
@@mogadanez Very nice! They're some options only allowed to members of some kinds of JR services, like "Smart EX","EX Reservation". Planning is also fun time!
Does Kansai One Pass still exist?
Unfortunately it's gone. No exist anymore.
Do i have to pay every Time when i enter the Train or do i buy a ticket with the suica card ? Let’s say i want to go to shibuya and later on some other place. Do i have to pay twice or do i buy a daily Ticket with the Card ? And how much do i have to pay every time?
Thanks alot
If you don' t have any Passes, you have to get ticket by vending machine every bording. The price range is about 150 - 400 JPY each, it depends to distance.
Or get IC card first, I recommend you.
@@liljapan i have a suica card on Ma Apple wallet. I saw videos of people holding their phone with the suica Card through the gates. Do i have to go buy a ticket before entering ?
Or go to the vending maschines
