Thanks! though not entirely, no. This is a very minor side job. I usually make about $400 a year off of stuff like this - that's hardly anything compared to the time I put into it. But I love doing it, so I keep at it. I'm 17, still a senior in high school, so I've got a while before I figure out exactly what I need to do with my life.
TheDrum808 If you don't mind me asking, how long did it take for you to create this? Also, what was the thought process behind it? I'm asking because I'm 16, but I'm very interested in composing and music in general.
somethingscripted - a very long time (speaking of which, sorry for the extremely late reply). I started it as a concert piece, and then translated it to percussion. Once I had the melody and chords, though, it was a lot of fun to litter it with cool sounds and percussive rhythm (battery parts). I love writing battery haha. Thought process was "Hey, I like this song! I'll transcribe it and then arrange it!" pretty complicated thought process there, I know :P
And you're very kind. I wish I were famous - I'd be making a lot more than I am now - but hey, I just get a cool idea and work off it. What I really need though, is a better way to advertise these without pulling absurd amounts of money to do so. Anyway, glad you like it. I appreciate your kindness. I've got another Remix coming out this week - it's done right now, and all I have to do is edit that crap, export the sound file and make the video.
I listen to this every day during the christmas season, I've been wanting to do this for the school concert like every year my but teacher is like nah. Too bad, this is such a good piece.
We are going to try playing this at my winter concert. I'm playing tenor and since we dont have very good base players, we have them set up on jazz stands behind and me and the snare player will play the base solos
My school, Richmond Hill High School, are about to do this for our concert December 15th, we did this once in 2016, but this time it will be way better! It should be on UA-cam
I've got to say that this is amazing. i teach for a winter indoor group and something like this would be awesome. from the shots of the score and listening to it several times, it doesn't sound like any part is particularly hard for a decent high school group. i'm picturing the visuals that could be and i'm just blown away. i'd love for our group to do something like this, but due to the "politics" at our school we only have certain people write and they always write the same way, boring...
Great work! I know it isn't gonna happen, but if you wrote a full-length WGI show it would be freaking awesome. Like the next "The Last Goodbye" or "Live to Tell" awesome.
I don't know what to say to this other than "I'm speechless". This is brilliant and I am so jealous of your talent. I only dream to be as good as you are at this. Your videos inspire me
Haha same here. I'm in a program where we don't even have winter drumline. Show your "political" leaders this video and see what they think haha. You may be surprised. Besides, I put the price as really cheap compared to some other shows. I appreciate the compliments, too. I put a lot of time and work into this, and I'm glad there's such positive feedback for it.
Thanks man! That means a lot to me. It was a lot of hours and a lot more staring at the screen for weeks on end experimenting with sounds until I stumbled across something cool. And a lot of praying. I can't do crap without God, I've found.
I am speechless! You are incredibly talented, your videos.inspire me and I truly do wish that I had this much talent. Im in 8th grade band and this most definitely inspires me to move on to marching band in hopes that all percussion music is like this high school.
Thanks, man! Start writing too. Get Finale (I know, a big investment of money) - it's well, well worth it. I have no regret buying it because I knew I could use it a lot, often, and have a blast doing it. Try the trial version first, though it doesn't come with the good sound libraries.
TheDrum808 This song was really awesome, I write music myself, but I'm only an eighth grader and don't understand theory very well, but this is definitely very inspiring
TheDrum808 Lol honestly, I tried learning the snare parts by ear haha it sounds about right but I'm not sure if I'm using the correct stickings or rudiments hahaha
And today, I just found out that the note at measure 4 beat 3 is supposed to be wind chimes. I think I would rather use the midi sound because it is more mysterious than wind chimes of there was a way to create that with real objects
No, but a) the VDL demo that comes with Finale is priceless. Seriously. b) it took a loooot of time to master, because at times it can be frustrating, but it basically does everything you ever want it to, granted you have the patience to figure it out. It took me a year and a half before everything finally made perfect sense. c) it does way more than just drumline, and it does it well. If you want to write music (and sell it!), get it. Don't bother with the brass sounds though - they suck.
Set up as in what I use to write? I have Finale 2012 - I got it with academic pricing - very good decision - and an Oxygen 49 MIDI keyboard which I sometimes use. Other than that, I just have a laptop set up with an external monitor for an extended desktop. I run Windows 8, and my dad was awesome and let me inherit these really nice giant speakers with great bass (it can shake the walls), so I'm blessed to have it pretty well off. Most was given to me as gifts, except for Finale and the monitor.
I have :P but it's alright. Finale 2012 that comes with the VDL demo. It's $225 for students. Well worth it for those who want to write music and love to do it, even if it's only a little.
Definitely - although it would take a lot of work to export all of these parts again and the sound file. It could use a mallet feature and/or more drumline feature. I don't know a lot about WGI rules - I wrote this about a year ago, when I was a high school junior. I would guess that unless the limit doesn't permit, they could play another piece before or after to fill in the time. If I were to extend this, how much should I, if it needs to be more than half a minute?
It's your arrangement so it's up to you how to extend it. I'm guessing here since I can't see the parts but it sounds like it's a very high A class type piece or a low to mid open ( battery is definitely a class above the Front Ensemble parts). In WGI A class rules states music 4-6 minutes. So keep it about 15-30 seconds under 6 for saftey reasons in case groups drag so they don't get penalized. In Open class it's 4-7 minutes. with most shows averaging between 5:50- 6:30.
This is pretty great, I tech with a high school for indoor and could see this making a great show. The only problem is that it's a bout a half minute too short. Most circuits follow WGI rules just to make easier on units that also compete in WGI. And WGI requires a 4 minute minimum on shows. Any chance this could be extended by a half minute?
I had never heard that until now. I like it, but I can't sell arrangements without express purpose of the author - and frankly, I don't think Hans Zimmer is going to watch this video anytime soon.
Hmmm have you tried Sibelius. I'm currently deciding between those two. It's quite an investment for me (college student :P) and I just want to make sure I get the right one.. I mainly write percussion which seems right up your alley so that's the only reason I'm bothering you with this :P
I cannot. The reason is because the tempo and rhythms of the track make it really hard to write creative parts over it. With songs like Redemption and Equinox, the whole note background chords let me write whatever crazy tuplet parts I want to over it. Other songs (Like Mombasa off the Inception soundtrack - listen to it, you'll know what I mean) have sixteenth notes pulsing in the background, so all I can write are sixteenth note rhythms. Otherwise it wouldn't fit.
I downloaded Finale 2014 (free version, because I'm poor lol) and the snare sounds aren't realistic. In fact, none of the Marching Percussion sounds are realistic. How do I get them to sound like yours without spending $200 on Finale and $200 on Virtual Drumline?? Please help
Finale comes with many samples of VDL. Not the full version, but basically a quarter of everything in VDL. Everything you hear in all of my videos is with only what came with the purchase of Finale. The demo (for pirating reasons) doesn't come with VDL sounds.
TheDrum808 Okay. I just got Finale 2014 full version. I cant figure out how to enable the demo sounds. Finale is too confusing. There's nothing on the internet about putting VDL sounds in Finale. Can you help me out?
Please don't pirate my music. I spent months working on that, and would be greatly disappointed if people began sharing them. You can buy it on Composercentral.com.
Most scores like this are $50 and over. This a great price especially because well, just listen to it! There is so much work that goes into arranging and composing. If the price is too high then maybe pull all of your money together.
I was not expecting that snare entrance... my jaw dropped. I was just expecting some front line stuff... NOPE! Awesome!
Thanks man!
I'm happy I joined the percussion gang
If you're not a professional composer, you need to be. This is amazing.
Oh, this is your profession.
Thanks! though not entirely, no. This is a very minor side job. I usually make about $400 a year off of stuff like this - that's hardly anything compared to the time I put into it. But I love doing it, so I keep at it. I'm 17, still a senior in high school, so I've got a while before I figure out exactly what I need to do with my life.

Bruh did you play this? If so this is amazing. I play snare for my school and I'm excited for high school marching band
By far, this is my favorite indoor percussion song ive ever heard. Including other composers on youtube, other websites and WGI.
Thanks man! That means a lot to me.
I listen to this every day during the christmas season, I've been wanting to do this for the school concert like every year my but teacher is like nah. Too bad, this is such a good piece.
Thanks man! I really appreciate that.
Same!
Drumline is amazing in this. Tenors and Bass sound real fun, awesome Snare entrance.
We are playing this at my school's upcoming Christmas concert. I'm playing timpani :)
Great work on this arrangement, it's very dramatic!
Thanks! Post a video and send me the link. I'd love to see it ;)
Cool! Me too I’m playing the vibraphone
I play snare and timpani
Funny Jayyy can I see performance?
We are going to try playing this at my winter concert. I'm playing tenor and since we dont have very good base players, we have them set up on jazz stands behind and me and the snare player will play the base solos
That was so fucking amazing. Well done on the composition!!!

the basses and snares are insane. i love this. great work
Thanks man!
This is honestly super dope the drumline parts are great and that piano solo in the middle is really good too 👌🏼
This is actually amazing.
every thing about this ensemble is amazing. dont know how you do it.. dont know how you do it...
Thanks man! That means a lot to me. It was a lot of hours and a lot more staring at the screen for weeks on end experimenting with sounds until I stumbled across something cool. And a lot of praying. I can't do crap without God, I've found.
That's very inspiring and I do look up to you as a percussionist and in general. :)
aw thanks bro
Np

It is a stellar transcription.

Definitely my favorite ensemble.
Good job!
Thanks man! I appreciate that.
TheDrum808 no problem, I've been working on ensembles and this like really is inspiring
TheDrum808 This song was really awesome, I write music myself, but I'm only an eighth grader and don't understand theory very well, but this is definitely very inspiring
Magnifico...
This was amazing
Thank you for sharing. from Bogotá Colombia.
Fantastic writing! I love it

OMGosh this is f**kin' amazing!!!!
haha thanks man!

Thanks, man. That means a lot to me.
So sick!
Love this

Ugh this is freaking cool! Can you please write a crazy bass drum solo, split 6-alets. Crazy sick beats! With music?!
is there any videos of this being performed? I would love to see that

please have the whole score on screen at the same time
Yeah. It took a while.
You really are great. I hope to play some of your famous works one day. By the way, how much does you set up cost?
Where i can buy this arregement? It is great!!!
Any way to get sheet music???
+Music Reviewer30 - Check the description.
Do you have to use a combination of finale and VDL to compose these percussion pieces?
Please consider arranging something to "what are you going to do when you're not saving the world" off the Man of Steel Soundtrack. Please
Very interesrin'
Hmmm have you tried Sibelius. I'm currently deciding between those two. It's quite an investment for me (college student :P) and I just want to make sure I get the right one..
I mainly write percussion which seems right up your alley so that's the only reason I'm bothering you with this :P
So....the full score?
How much would it be to just get front ensemble?
Haha thanks.
Can you please post the tenor part to this. Or at least the first 10 or so measures? Please.
Not unless you wanna buy it! lol. Not to be a jerk, but I spent a craaaaapload of time writing it, and it's only $30. Play it at your school!
Do you sale the music? Would love it for shool
Link in the description.
What program was this made on? This looks complex and It would be fun to experience and make something big like that!
I cannot. The reason is because the tempo and rhythms of the track make it really hard to write creative parts over it. How many parts and what instrumentation is it?
Is this sheet music still available for sale?
Any sheet music? I'd love to have my drumline do this for the holiday season.
+AvengedJeramyfold Now in the description. Have fun!
Thank you!
Would you be willing to sell this arrangement? If so, i would be interested...
This would make a great WGI movement. like really.
Thanks man! I wish I had network connections to get this into a WGI show, but I'm not in WGI nor do I know many people who are.
damn lol
Is this winter drumline elegible?
very cool piece you have here, but unfortunately its way to hard for my line, i might have to re re re arrange it lol.
*if we decide to do it
😭🙏🏼👌🏼
What's is the octave range for the marimbas?
THIS IS SOOO BAD ASS.
hey u think u can do a reptile by skrillex for a caedence

Ok..... I guess..... I mean..... idk..... thanks a lot
$39!?!?!?!??!
Are you surprised at how cheap I made it? This is lower than the average for a percussion ensemble, especially one written for a drumline.
TheDrum808 its expensive for me and my school
Most scores like this are $50 and over. This a great price especially because well, just listen to it! There is so much work that goes into arranging and composing. If the price is too high then maybe pull all of your money together.
Snares are overwhelming, like it's Carol of bells not a snare cadence. ):
Thanks!
