So many memories... Thank you Storm, for pointing out and talking about the history of places along the way that are still standing, and also those places that are now gone. It helps to refresh those old memories. I enjoyed this ride immensely. Thank you again.😊
Enjoy your videos. Born in Gary 1941. Lived in Liverpool and then Glenn Park. 3390 Kentucky st. Attended Franklin school. Delivered Gary Post Tribune on my bike...
@@gibbyswife9218 yes, when I attended, starting in 1949.it was all old white wooden building. We had a gymnasium and auditorium. We watched on TV in auditorium Queen Elizabeth coronation .
@@larrygolden554 That made a very big impression on you! I love those defining moments that we carry with us throughout our lifetime. When I went to Franklin Elementary, we had the "new" brick building. But we attended 5th and 6th grade in that portable white wooden building. I remember the Auditorium, too. We elected class officers in it. The Gym was where we entered the building. We had art and music classes in there as well as regular classes. It is great to find others who share some of the same memories from the same places where we grew up. Before I found The Steel City Storm Channel, and Storm, I thought my childhood was just my own memory. Thank you for replying.
I live in central Indiana in Kokomo, and I always take the bus or train through Gary to Chicago. I've always wondered what was down Broadway! Thanks for posting this!
Wow!! Talk about memory lane!! I grew up in Gary Indiana from 1976 until 1987 I'm about 45 years old and your videos are so genuine and transparent thank you so much .I grew up in Glen Park West 46th avenue, Morningside neighborhood. You give so much insight. I had a beautiful childhood there and I love taking my friends from Michigan to see the amazing place I grew up and telling the stories but nobody tells them better than you. Thank you!!
I was bor n in gary Indiana move to Merrillville when I was six move to North Carolina in 1993 I do go home occasionally in the past eight years when I first came back I was so surprised on the area I changed I graduated from Merrillville high School thanks for the update on the area it's nice to watch
I almost hate to have company come to visit Thank you so much Storm. My name is Karen Champion and I attended and graduated from Wallace myself. In '76. Our politicians seem to concentrate on downtown Gary. But what about the inner city of Gary? Once you get off the expressway and head down Broadway, North or South the City begins to show its ugly face. I really do hope the right politicians or people in general see these lovely ruins and do something about it. ...As far as the big white elephant is concerned, The Genesis Center, that was a mistake from the beginning. Storm, keep doing what you do. We need Gary back.
Thank You for all those encouraging comments and true feelings Karen I LOVE seeing these kinds of thoughts from the heart. I will promise to keep doing what I do as long as I have good people like yourself here experiencing what I show and See. God Bless & Thank You so much once again Karen ❤😉🌺
The high school you passed is Andrean , my high school. It’s sad that most of the places you drove by are gone. Most of the places you are driving by are now empty lots. Erdelac’s Mobil was at 4500 Broadway for 60 years, my Dad sold the property and now it’s boarded up.
Hey, I grew up on 61st and Liverpool. We then moved to Portage. Went to school with a guy named Chuck Erdelac. Around Portage IN class of 71. Any relation?
bobbybob, you could have said that your graduating class in a nearby public high school had maybe a hundred FEWER students than a few years earlier. Many students, like the red-haired girl named Carolyn, probably finished high school at Andrean, a Catholic school.
Thank you what a difference than what I knew back in the 60's and 70's. There is a proposal of a Gary Airport that was in The Post Tribune in the 70's. If you could obtain a copy you would be surprised. The power that were then imagined A Gary Airport boundaries; to Indiana Toll Road, to the north, Borman Expressway, to the south, Cline Ave to the west, and finally, if I remember, Broadway, on the east. Will it ever happen? Stay tuned. Did you have Mr.Chaney for U.S. History at Lew Wallace,;. the lesson "Manifest Destiny," when U.S.Gov expanded to the Western Territory and Southwest Territory as well.
Wonder if you could ever ride through the Brunswick area of Gary...I grew up off 5th Ave and Dallas St..Went to Brunswick,Edison and Westside High School.I know my family home on Dallas St still stands and is being lived in...but would like to see the rest of the old neighborhood.Havent been back up there for awhile...
There used to be a restaurant on the south side of Broadway called the Chatterbox (they had excellent fries with gravy on top) - also the old drive in theater - any chance of filming those?
Thank you so much, darling. I really appreciate that. And I appreciate you correcting me on that and sharing the videos. It’s wonderful people like you that. Keep me doing what I do. I appreciate you.
My wife remembers a Gateway grocery on Broadway near 35th. Can you (or anyone) confirm that. She thinks she walked there from her grandmother's house that was nearby.
Your wife is 💯 correct. It was on 35th Broadway. I lived on 36th Carolina. I was just a kid back in the early 70’s but I remember it well. 😊 It was on the right side of Broadway if you were facing north. I believe it was gone around 1970/1971. Ma & pops type grocery store.
My grandfather is the owner of the restaurant. I used to occasionally go there on the weekends. I've been searching online to see if I can find any photos of the restaurant or if anyone remembers him or any stories to share. I know he and his employee were very close to some customers, so there's a chance someone may have some pics or stories to share.
Don't pay attention to your mention on "Merrillville High when pass 59 B'way." All us Hornets know it's all relavent Merrillville and Andrean smell the same. La-tee-da.
You know what? If I were a billionaire, I'd bring Gary back. I'd tear buildingsAND ABANDONED PROPERTIES down one by freakin' one. ALL OVER THE DAMN CITY. I'D GET IT RIGHT.
So many memories...

We used to "cruise" between Burger King and McDonalds. They were our turn-a-round spots! LOL
Same here.

I enjoyed your narration btw, brought back a lot of memories… I grew up in the region… moved away in 1991 when I was 25
Me too Rob left there in 1991 also.

At the beginning of this video, I thought I saw Andrean High School to the right, so I backed up the video and could SEE the sign that said Andrean.

Storm, you never talk to much, your giving info about your city that people like myself don't know that much about...you're the Best🤟👊👍

I loved the movie Original Gangsters when the guy says You cross into BROADWAY, YOUR Ass will pay! “
Good job storm
Long before Lincolns Carry out Chuck Wheelers Roast Beef was in that building. My first real job in High School, 1968.
You Rock!!!
U guys ever do anything within the steel mills? My dad worked at US Steel and I was born in Gary
Oh that would be great- my dad worked at Sheet & Tin and I was born in Gary, too.
Sometime would you consider driving video of 45th avenue, Johnson Street and Grant. Enjoy your videos. Gary is my home town.
There used to be a restaurant on the south side of Broadway called the Chatterbox (they had excellent fries with gravy on top) - also the old drive in theater - any chance of filming those?
*never mind, I see you did a video on the Y&W!! Saw Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and ET there.
My grandparents lived at 8 west ridge road. Corner of ridge Broadway.
Do you remember a record store on Broadway called “Hammer The Jammer”?? I last went there in 1998… Do you know if it’s still there??
I think the store Mrs. Jackson worked at, was Sears not Montgomery Wards. Like your channel and share it with my friends. Sincerely, Lew Wallace alum.
Thank you so much, darling. I really appreciate that. And I appreciate you correcting me on that and sharing the videos. It’s wonderful people like you that. Keep me doing what I do. I appreciate you.

That school is actually Andrean. I went there and Merrillville High School which is off of 68th ave.
