A clip from the Sopranos where Paulie and Sylvio are talking in the office at The Bing while Metallica’s version of this is blasting in the club brought me here.
LITERALLY THE BEST version of this song! From a recording engineer point of view, the ABSOLUTE rawness of the 'glitches', 'mistakes', 'poor recording quality' and the like equal out to the audio version of ABSOLUTE dread and ominousness. (if that is even a word.)
This sounds like it was recorded on some old cassette player that someone had had tucked under their arm while at a concert. You can't hear the vocals, if you had mixed it right and recorded it in Dobly, it would be better
This song was originally released as a live version in 1983. That's what Metallica heard and covered in 1987, and the royalties from their cover lead to Holocaust reforming later in '89. I like this version better than both the original live version and Metallica's version because the drumming in the thrashy part is much faster here. This recording is from their 1992 album Hypnosis of Birds, which is actually a really proggy weird metal album overall. There are some really amazing songs on there, which aren't as heavy as this one, but are more interesting I think. Check out The Tower from this album for instance, it's just stunning.
I always thought it was funny how Metallica used to cover songs that were ultra rare and hard to find (like in the case of the original version of this song) I couldn't for one find some of the 7 inches as a kid of the Misfits, all we had was the official Plan 9/Caroline records stuff like Legacy of Brutality, etc, but finding Beware for the original version of Last Caress was a pain the in the ass. FInally, Collection 2 had that song and it wasn't until the mid nineties that I heard the original, even though I did own a bootleg version of the Bullet EP.
I love both version but Metallica's is crunchier so I lean towards it more. Plus Kirk's lead is just so killer! I love this song though. It's also funny that Metallica's version played at the Bada Bing in one episode of the Sopranos.
I used this track in a staged performance of The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe, during the part where the protagonist is just getting "Nevermore" after Nevermore after Nevermore at the end... and I'm just now noticing what the title of this album is.
I have to say that this is far creepier and raw than Metallica's version. I prefer Metallica's probably because I heard it first, however this still rocks and I can see why they covered it.
Metallica's version was based on the 1981 live version, which was the only one that existed at the time. They took out the _Suck on this!_ both the original, and Metallica's version had near the beginning of the song.

Small world isn’t it? So he was just their touring guitarist, didn’t record? How old is this song? I guess I can look that up. Metallica covered it on their Garage Days album released in 1987 as a “warmup” for Jason Newstead. 1983. When did your cousin tour with them?
ALoud Buttwhistle He toured with them in the nineties. I don’t think he ever recorded with them. If he did it was as an unlisted session musician. He does a lot of work as a session musician. He was also in the UKs biggest Pink Floyd tribute band.
Honestly, I think this song is one of the most significant for the evolution towards the heavy and thrash metal sound, regardless of whether later bands were aware of it or not. Metallica, for sure, was aware of it.
They actually might have in the very beginning...I heard Dave say they covered every Diamond Head song the first album just about so maybe they did this too.

This is an obvious predecessor toThrash. From the distorted guitars to start, the heavy bass the chunky guitars and the Dave Mustaine like vocals. The vocals are surprisingly like Mustaine’s. But Holocaust must be copying his vocal style because this came out relatively late for a NWOBHM song.
The version of "The Small Hours" that Metallica heard - and decided to cover - was off a live album by Holocaust called "Live (Hot Curry and Wine)," which came out in 1983, nine years before this version. The 1983 live version sounds very different. For one thing, it has a different vocalist, a guy named Gary Lettice, who sings on Holocaust's first two eps and first studio album. His vocals have more grit and are more "metal." The earlier live version also has more punch. I like both versions, but the live one is superior.
This my first time hearing this version after 25+ years of listening to the Metallica cover. My conclusion....Metallica's is better and this singer sounds like Gene Simmons.

That guitar is literally crying its being so abused - I had to turn it off right after the "solo". Lol
