I would love to see a sleeping T Rex opening it’s eyes to see what’s disturbing it then deciding it not worth the effort and goes back to sleep.
You reminded me of the scene in The Magic School Bus episode "The Busasaurus" where Arnold and Phoebe yank out an Ornithomimus egg that was stuck on a sleeping T. rex. Being a TV show for kids, the dinosaur chased them instead of letting them go. I would love to see a scene of what you suggested in a future documentary, whether it be a T. rex or some other theropod. 🙏
Season 2 has granted your wish
My biggest problem with PhP isn’t even the documentary itself, it’s the fact that in the span of 6 months no official merch or dvd release has been made or announced. Like come on Apple, you know what the people want.
I want a hank grill apron.
Yeah getting DVDs/Blu-Rays, a companion book, and even official toys would have been even better!

Teacher: How would you describe Prehistoric Planet?
Me: “For once, its just a story about animals being animals”
Why are everyone's teachers asking questions about actually interesting stuff and not just algebra and crap.
Apt description.
People trying not to copy and paste each others comments on anything PP related
The Prehistoric Planet T rex is probably one of my favorite ever T-rex designs.
It's nice how they were more focused on making it look realistic rather than looking "cool"
Best of all is proved that realistic scientifically accurate animals actually look cool.
No it's cooler beacuse they have lips and fat, muscles, and skin to sustain them
@@spinoraptor35 and behave like normal animal not rabid monster
and it even looks way better than the "cool" t rex
It looks so majestic!
There's no better example of feeling powerful than having Rick mentioning a book (all yesterdays) and you having a copy of it. It's genuenily just as good as he states and i really recommend it
Me too I have stego pp and citipati pp!
i’m going to be getting it for my birthday in 18 days :DD
The designs of the animals look kind of dumb and seems like a fanfiction on evolution theory altrough a lot of work has been put into consctructing the world, most animals just come off as totally impossible and extremely specific nonsense to me, which is kind of annoying. That was the reason im kind of thrown off trying to read it besides the fame.
Goodjob!
@@end.olives I thought the point of it was to show that those designs are just as possible as modern depictions and that they aren't supposed to be right or wrong.
Another thing I liked about prehistoric planet is that they also introduced rather obscure animals and not just the famous ones .Most people probably never heard of Tuarangisaurus, barbaridactylus , Phosphatodraco, thetydraco ,alcione and secernosaurus
Fun fact: When the documentary was made the animal that is supposed to be Secernosaurus is actually based on the species that would become Huallasaurus, so the Secernosaurus depicted in the documentary are actually supposed to be Huallasaurus australis. Don't worry Secernosaurus koerneri is still a valid type genus and species but this species (australis) in particular would turn out to be a completely different hadrosaur.
Yeah I also like how they act like animals like in they would , Jurassic park did have the dinosaurs act like animals a little and by Jp I mean 1993 but preshistoric planet did it better
Also many of the featured animals are given various shade of coloration, unlike so many other dinosaur based media which always make their dinosaurs/ptero as dull as elephant. Jurassic park is the best example from this
@@prasetyodwikuncorojati2434 Well not all of them, you're thinking of Jurassic World, Jurassic Park trilogy had some colorful dinosaurs, like the JP3 Velociraptors, TLW tiger raptors, the JP3 Brachiosaurus, the JP3 and TLW Pteranodons, the Pyroraptor and Parasaurolophus from Jurassic World Dominion (only example from JW), the Compys, etc.
@@the_death_phantom533 also not to forget monolophosaurus, oviraptor, Baryonyx and ouranosaurus
There’s something unnatural and terrifying about accurate Rex sounds. Like sure a roar is scary but the actual sounds are unsettling.
And then imagine hearing the carnotaurus call while walking through a forest.
Well these are just based on mordern animals so t rex sounds could even sound different than the current reconstruction
“Accurate Rex sounds” LOL…
@@altithoraxperotorum5133 It's based on the fact that T-rex didn't have vocal cords, so all the sounds it could make were limited to pushing air through a fleshy pipe in various ways.
@@pocarski yep but it still can sound different than the reconstruction
That Deinocheirus has to be my favorite depiction of the animal. I love how it looks like a gross swamp monster thing

@@toyohimeyeswatatsuki6917 That's a very good way to descrive it
My conure behaves in the same exact way, he will grab pencils or sticks and scratch his head. It is just amazing to me how they made 65 million years seem like it’s so familiar
Honestly really appreciated the fact that the father rex totally bypassed the living archelon to go for the much easier meal - the dead one. So many doc/mockumentaries just show carnivores going on a killing spree for S&Gs like indominus rex, it's awful.
Edit: I appreciate so many replies! Clearly I've made a terrible mistake by citing indo-rex as my killing-spree type monster. Yes, I know indo-rex _was_ killing things for fun and because she was neglected, bored, and abused. So to clarify, I dislike it when media is trying to make naturalistic animals kill things all the time, at random, for no good reason. There are some exceptions, such as (but not only) cats, who do kill for S&Gs, and other animals that have caching behaviors. My problem comes when the animal is used as an antagonist just to have an animal antagonist, or to add "shock value" to whatever they're making.
Makes me think of Jurassic Park III where the T. rex is chowing down on some carcass, spots the humans, and starts chasing them instead of finishing its meal.
To be fair to Jurassic World, the Indominus rex was literally created to be a monster. It going on a killing spree is kind of the point of why it was created.
bad example with the Indominus but i do get what you mean by the carnivores just making incredibly stupid decisions in certain docs
Yeah, I mean if I were to see a live chicken and an already roasted & garnished one, I definitely would just eat the latter despite humans being technically the apex predator.
@@ernovincze2900 Admittedly the T.Rex was probably just chasing them away from its kill.
Prehistoric Planet is definitely a worthy successor to Walking With Dinosaurs. I’d love to see maybe a prequel or spin-off of it set in the Jurassic

@@dubuyajay9964 yessss
I’ve heard rumors about there being a sequel to Prehistoric Planet, but no release date has been announced or what time period it will take place in, but I think it would be awesome if they covered all time periods that dinosaurs lived in, all the way from the Triassic to just before the end of the Cretaceous, after all the first season showed the dinosaurs that lived during the very end of the Cretaceous, but I do wish they showed dinosaurs like Alamosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Anzu, Struthiomimus, Thescelosaurus, and Dakotaraptor. Maybe we could get an episode just dedicated to the animals that lived in North America during the very end of the Cretaceous, and as a result we could see the return of the T. Rex looking the same way it looks in the show as that would make sense, same case with Triceratops, Edmontosaurus, and Quetzalcoatlus since they were shown in the first season.
These two are the only great CGI dinosaur documentaries.

I think one element of Prehistoric Planet that I enjoyed was that the portrayal of Phosphatodraco, Quetza, and Hatze was genuinely terrifying. Idk if it's just me but whenever you'd see close up shots of some of these guys I'm freaked out. Some of these fuckers are as big as giraffes, so I can't imagine something that large walking like that in a forest. Seeing the mother Quetza move and vocalize, and the Phosphatodraco makin' his way downtown in the colony with a cold and casual stride made me see them in a new light. Typically pterosaurs are, like Rick said, background animals, so I was surprised at how much they intimidated me and stole the show. I mean, I knew they were big, but I give massive props to the artists and animators to create pterosaurs that are both beautifully and lovingly designed, yet also induce a sense of terror in me. I'm almost glad they didn't shoot a night scene with them. They're genuinely so weird and I love them.
I also appreciate how casual these animals are going around and hunting. Phosphatodraco doesn't hiss at the Thethydraco or Alcione, like it would in other media - it just strolls into the colony and picks up what looks like edible prey. Same with the Hatzegopteryx ambushing the baby Zalmoxes.
Fr, azhdarchids look terrifying
its the proportions that get to me, they're all over the place. We're used to bugs or underwater creatures being weirdly proportioned and looking alien and unfamiliar, but the fact that there are vertebrates yet look so completely alien to any other vertebrate, even to flying animals like bats and birds, shoots them straight into the uncanny valley. They get weirder the lower you get. The head? pretty normal, looks like a strange bird. Then you start going lower and lower and it gets weirder and weirder till you're left wondering "what am I even looking at?"
I think part of it is that accurately designed pterosaurs, especially azhdarchids, have such uncanny anatomy. They have a near human torso and leg shape, but they have tails, they're covered in feathers, and they have those long, skinny arms and fingers. Then the head is obviously nothing like a human. It's just so uncanny, it adds a level of terror to them that other animals lack.
The King has returned
The Rex has returned
Honestly, very thoughtfully said and well put together video
You hit the points of fossil evidence, speculation, the different set pieces and the inspiration behind them, the dinosaurs just being animals, and even the criticism that can come with it all.
Really a no stone left unturned review, even with mentioning how people see this as a “successor” as well referencing the “All Yesterday’s” book.
Really it feels like what I could not put into words when I saw Prehistoric Planet for the first time is just all here in this video
I think BBC's Planet Dinosaur did that: they show the fossil evidence and general info (size, location, etc) in between the segment, but it was criticized for breaking the flow of the documentary. I guess BBC gear Prehistoric Planet closer to the format of Blue/Frozen Planet partly in respond to that.
The true beauty of this series is that you sit down, start watching and are pulled subtlety and wholly into the world Attenborough paints. You forgot you’re staring at a depiction of the world hundreds of millions of years ago. It’s so real, you might as well be watching a documentary on elephants in south-east Asia. Truly magical.
“That large man knew exactly who he was hitting on.”
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought this.
As someone who grew up in the post-walking-with-dinosaurs age, I couldn't have said it better myself, props!

That closing statement took the words right out of my mouth about why this is my favorite documentary of all time. I saw so many folks complaining that it didn't depict more of the Mezazoic, but I say that showing off a single period not only does what you said, but also shows that different geological periods are just as complex, diverse and interesting as our own.

While I love the Jurassic franchise (as a whole, my opinions about the movies differ from film to film), it was so refreshing to have dinosaurs treated like actual animals. I feel like dinosaurs got sucked into that “what if everything was deadly” mindset that ruined shark docs for a while.
Tbf the original jurassic park was extremly accurate for its time and tried to show of that they are animals and not just monsters, atleast not all. For example the sauropod scene. The problem is just that a lot has changed since back then its not accurate anymore. Just shows gow much our view of dinosaurs has changed
@@marweha7002 Oh I fully agree. I think a lot of people forget that JP1 was made a while back and are too harsh on it’s accuracy. But even beyond the movies a lot of specials and docs in the 2000s went hard on the “look how DEADLY and WILD dinosaurs were” aspect. Jurassic Fight Club is a perfect example. Around the same time Shark Week really picked up steam and went hard on “look how DEADLY sharks are” stuff.
@@WyattoonsComics yeah i agree. I hope more people have seen how good an actual docu about dinos as animals can be and make more of thus kind of documentation and less fight club lol, tho can we not call jurassic fight club a docu lmao. I hardcore grew up with Walking with Dinosaurs as a kid. I always loved the peaceful atmosphere, and the realistic portrayals of the dinosaurs. Sure I liked the more action packed documentaries, but Walking with Dinosaurs was always calming for me, and today still provides a calming sensation.
When I first heard that Apple TV was going to make a similar series, I was really skeptical and nervous because I've kind of lost faith and modern dinosaur documentaries.
However, when I first watched the first episode, the intro literally brought me to tears.
The clear respect for the source material, the beautiful music, the narration by the legendary David Attenborough, I felt an overwhelming sense of emotion.
The series really was a worthy successor to Walking with Dinosaurs, and I'm glad to say that it was worth the hype.

The gentle disappearance of the baby tyrannosaurus was possible even scarier than a super attack.
After watching all the episodes I went to show it to my son, who loves dinosaurs and usually has no problem with movie deaths, he was upset about, he only accepted to continue seeing after 10 days and with the promise that there were no more puppies dying.
One of the many small design details that completely captured me in the show is how sleek the Qianzhousaurus is, and how they gave it stripes. Really reminiscent to me of a tiger, and I think that was the idea. It's super interesting to imagine that the apex ambush predator in a similar grassy type forest in asia would have the same pattern scheme to its counterpart millions of years in the future. I also love how they showed it failing its first hunt, just like most predators do, even massive ancient ones. Tyrannosaurs aren't just perfect killing machines, and the prey isn't just docile and dumb, they are alert and defensive too! I think that shows how they first and foremost aimed to make a nature doc, not a dinosaur show, and i absolutely love it!
I definitely agree that the Qianzhousaurus scene was very reminiscent of a tiger. The way it's all tense while stalking, blending in with its environment and then exploding with speed was one of the things I had really hoped this show would depict for a theropod. No roaring before attacking, no dramatic kill, just simply going for it and then disappearing again in between the trees. It's a lot more terrifying to watch a 7 meter long theropod acting elusive than making everything in a five kilometer radius knowing where it is.
@@robinliesens7983 for sure! That was one hunting scene that really caught my attention even though it was pretty short, because it showed such a natural and new predator-prey relationship, versus the t-rex and trike you constantly see roaring and bashing each other. It also showed a large predator being intelligent and taking advantage of a natural boom and bust cycle of fruit trees which attracts abundant food. Tigers are intimidating, but it's even scarier to think of a 2-ton animal being so silent and hidden. Definitely very bbc Planet Earth-esque
@@snakewithapen5489 The Planet Earth vibe was definitely there. They really nailed those shots.
This masterpiece of a series was like an otherworldly experience. They made the Mesozoic Era an even more immersive world than Pandora. I completely agree, Prehistoric Planet is less of a sequel to WWD and more of a television adaptation of All Yesterdays. And I am much more happier with that.
Edit: well Naish confirmed it wasn’t this lol
18:10 Carnotaurus shuffling his feet and dancing to Do The Mario is fucking gold 🤣🤣
4:47 Fun fact, the original jurassic park novel also had a T-REX swimming.
The novel also had the adult t-rex sleeping 2:48 . Concept art for the movie has a sleeping t-rex also.
While some people call it a spiritual successor to WWD, I think it's closest to March of the Dinosaurs formula, just having dinosaurs be dinosaurs. One of the most iconic parts of it were when the herbivores fought each other, because yeah, herbivores weren't just mindless lovey-dovey cuddle monsters, but are animals competing with each other for resources. Through, March of the Dinosaurs still had its awesomebro moments. Prehistoric Planet was beyond phenomenal, and im sure it will spur a whole new age of paleomedia as the walking-with series did before it.
I wouldn’t call March of the Dinosaurs having Dinosaurs just being Dinosaurs, some parts are kind of stupid
the t-posing Carnotaurus in the thumbnail got me hooked lol
It’s nice to see our German raptor evolve to more positive reviews, and this right here is a perfect example of reviewing the best documentary to ever come out! And the fact that it’s not about extinction of the dinosaurs in the end really stands out! You get to see how these magnificent animals live their lives, and act like… actual animals. I am in genuine tears of joy!
Prehistoric Planet is my new favorite paleo documentary. I binge it almost every other day.
It's a hit because these are the most realistic dinosaurs yet. Mononykus was stunning. It moved, bobbed its head just like a Roadrunner bird - but with teeth!

Dude, I can't even describe how much i love and admire Prehistoric Planet. I hope we will get more masterpieces like this in the future
I consult my Rickraptor shrine similarly to how he prays to One-Eye
you really hit the nail on the head about why this is a documentary that just feels better than the rest and it really is the overall tone of the thing, theres no doom and gloom its just "Hey thats a cool looking animal just sleeping" or "hey look at this goofy little guy trying to impress a female" and its really refreshing and nice to see in a paleo documentary. It just felt like a kind and respectful way of looking at these animals in a way thats more approachable to the average person, making them see them the same way you might see a bear, yeah he could kill you, but doesnt he look cute when he sleeps?
As a kid I used to watch dinosaur movies all day long on repeat (Especially walking with dinosaurs). I am very fond of these memories.
I actually remember reading a graphic novel as a child about the hellcreek formation that should honey producing bee colonies. That was in 2009.
Ice Worlds and especially the Nanuqsaurus sequence was my absolute favourite moment.
The end is spot on, it’s so off putting that most documentaries keep focusing on the end of the dinosaurs
I will say about the segment with the sauropods toppling trees arguably is more showing how they were enormous engineers of their environment, promoting new growth and recycling of nutrients. Using a dinosaur to explain their interaction with the all the plants in the ecosystem is something new.
But yeah, its amazing. Can't say that enough, I almost cried when it ended lol

I just loved that they gave dinosaurs actual muscles mass and body fat instead of looking dehidrated and starving all the time.
Also the dinosaurs weren't the centre of every episode which it's cool
I fell in love with the Deinocheirus from this show and while I am sad we didnt see more of it I am happy just how gorgeous it was.

Rick, you should review Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal. It is one of the best shows, of all time. Purely badassery, and sure, it’s not very accurate, but you should still review it. It’s also criminally underrated.
What's funny is that Primal's season 2 premiered shortly after Prehistoric Planet - and both started with a tyrannosaur crossing the sea and eating a sea turtle, followed by an episode with tyrannosaurs mating.

I never believe it when people say that the Carno is popular, because it’s not in children’s Dino media very often(I’m talking about books). Although it’s popularity has grown in my opinion in the last few years, I feel like it’s still not at the level I want. It’s my favorite Dino and I wish it was more loved
You know about that Dino game the isle evrima? More realistic than most, in beta so still buggy, but entertaining for the 20$ it costs. You play as the dinosaurs with others online growing from a baby to adult. And it has carnos to play as.
Dunno about children's books, but part of the issue with _Carnotaurus_ in documentaries at least is that it's basically the only well-preserved dinosaur from the La Colonia Formation, which makes it difficult to include in a WWD-styled documentary.
Which makes Prehistoric Planet the perfect opportunity for it to finally properly shine in a palaeo-documentary.
@@juanyusee8197 I mean that same formation overlaps with the same formation Saltasaurus was found in so that’s not really an excuse.

some of the sound inspiration for theropods for sure included animals like the Ostrich, Emu and Cassowary as evidence of what they actually sounded like since those animals are the closest you'll ever get to something like a Trex or Raptor other then crocodiles

Because the bee doesn’t care what humans think is impossible
This year was trully the Year of the Dinosaurs !!!
A lot of thing came to rebuilt people´s love for Dinosaurs, not by the way they look, but for the spectacular animals they are !!!
Both Jurassic World: Dominion and Prehistoric Planet are both equally masterpieces to me !!!
The first nailed it as a movie, by being trully outstandig and very intense and funny, with cool and awesome designs, and the second reach an almost 100% perfect accuracy everyone always expect to see in a Natural History Dinosaur themed series ... And even have the legend itself, Attenborough, to makes everything way more magical !!
Also, I love how Rick is the first person (or maybe, Raptor 😁) I see that trully seems to understand that it´s not necessary to dismiss Dominion (or the general Jurassic franchise) to make Prehistoric Planet looks great, since both are mesmeringlly wonderfull in they own ways !!! 💖
Plus, this was the year where the second season of Primal was released (though unfortunately it had criminally few dinosaurs), and the video games Jurassic World Evolution 2 and Prehistoric Kingdom got their expansion and early release respectively.
It is incredible, hopefully it'll span a huge franchise like WWD did or at least get a dvd release.
Ah, so THIS was that thing that “wasn’t supposed to go live”. I barely missed it during that Atlantis stream, and I must say it’s been worth the wait.
What I liked the most about prehistoric planet was that the dinos actually felt like real animals in their habitat.
11:01 omg this sounds a lot more scarier that those "omg typical monster" roars. Alien almost like
Okay okay okay, with the expectation subversion with the sound... You have to admit, the mumbling and groaning of the T-Rexes shown in the clips of Prehistoric Planet sound infinitely more terrifying than the roaring.
I wanted to make a video like this but never did. This is so much better than what I could have ever hoped to do.
What makes this an awesome Dinosaurs documentary, is that they portrayed the dinosaurs as actual animals, not as killer machines monsters.
I have to say that Hank the T Rex playing 'daddy daycare' feeding on sea turtles is something I have been thinking about for a few years: with those jaws, an adult (or even a subadult) Rex would make short work of a sea turtle; wouldn't it make sense that when sea turtles came ashore to lay their eggs, it would be an outstanding opportunity to feast? Kind of like Kodiak bears and the salmon runs, the Rexes of various ages would squabble over finding a good place to wait for the arriving turtles.
That being said, it must be added that Creteceous sea turtles would have to be large as hell and/or armored like a main battle tank to survive in the Western Seaway, that throws my theory in doubt, to some degree.
The carnotaurus scene is one of the most wholesome scens with the music in the background but then the female one ditches the male one
I believe that the Deinocheirus is Prehistoric planet's Shrek and he is happy to have his swamp
Swamp good
i am the main character
thats why its good
You ain't the main character. Hank's the main character.
@@kade-qt1zu is only in half of one episode 💀
@@Al0_Vera He's the icon though. Deinocheirus is the side character.
I'm really hoping for a season 2 with the jurassic and triassic eras and a physical release.
Tbh I think that all of the newly announced documentaries like dinosaurs with Stephen fry, surviving earth, life on our planet and forgotten bloodlines are the beta version of season 2. Wether or not these will be good only time will tell but I think it's safe to say that we are entering a new age of Dino-docs catalysed by prehistoric planet.
Season 2 has been confirmed, but it looks like it will still be in the Cretaceous - first focus image was of the ankylosaur from Deserts, Tarchia.
@@flamealisk1584 yeah i saw
I know it’s such a cliche fight scene but I do wish they showed a showdown between Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. They could of done it in unique way still that’s realistic.
Perhaps they could've made it a draw where neither gets gruesomely injured and they kind just walk away from eachother after a small scuffle
For me, the Nanuqsaurus and Pachyrhinosaurus interactions were close enough to having the T. rex and Triceratops rivalry deconstructed and portrayed in a more realistic light.
The herbivores were definitely no pushovers and got some hits in, even driving their opponents to retreat a couple of times. But the predators were also smart enough to take their time and dogpile on a weaker separated individual, rather than risk getting killed in epic one-on-one duels, even if the former strategy is more anticlimactic and devoid of Hollywood spectacle.
Awh man the ending even made me tear up a bit :')
Awesome video!!
8:17 man that voice unlocked a memory I’d long forgotten
