I think that, thematically, the stormtroopers looking incompetent is actually essential to making the OT work. Not to say they’re hot garbage, but rather that things like corrupted command structures, the Death Star destruction, AND incompetent stormtroopers proves to the Galaxy that the Empire is vulnerable, that you can fight back… and win.

Stormtroopers are actually my favorite Sci-fi military force. They're actually pretty decently equipped, and had so much more potential with competent training and when not being wasted in a policing role that a PDF or local police force can perform.
All this just shows that when soldiers pledge their allegiance to an individual as opposed to the society as a whole. It becomes more dangerous for everyone involved.

In 55 years of interest in military history, I can say I have never found a military that is comparable to the Imperial Storm Trooper Corp that did not have a significant percentage of officers that were flexible in their interpretation of regulations and orders. I have never found a military that has successfully stopped comradeship. Never underestimate the low animal cunning of the common soldier and their determination to have comradeship. The most determined stormtroopers will defeat the system and develop their own version comradeship that would work for them even if it would not make sense to us. But the more I know the more I discover how little I know, so I could be very wrong.

    • @charlescowan6121

I think this why American troops stay a little more balanced in combat. Sure some folks kinda loose it, but by and large we police ourselves, don't let things go to far, we solve problems at the lowest level possible. We don't need officers telling us what to do, in fact we could go days without seeing them. If you have a unit where officers are demanding the enlisted to do immoral things, it can get ugly fast.
So we would hear units from western Europe on the radio calling for assistance because they lost their officer. The enlisted can't make decisions. They got really excited when they heard Americans Roger up; "Sit tight, we're on our way!" Anyone else either won't or they negotiate for something in return, yanks don't do that. If we're not on a critical mission, we're gonna help. I always thought that was such a bizarre thing to not have sr enlisted making decisions.

@@charlescowan6121 While what your saying is true for the most part, there's so many soldiers that are arrested for refusing orders. I agree its good to question orders and over time our military has improved on that front, it doesn't stop for corrupted military leaders having soldiers dishonorably discharged and put in jail for refusing a super questionable order. Our military right now is seeing bottom level recruitment with no major incentive to join. Our military for a short time in 2020-2022 focused on diversity training as leaked by many soldiers and higher ups.
Also the treatment of veterans and their healthcare is treated like crap. There's a reason about one third of our homeless are veterans and don't know how to cope with PTSD in a healthy way. If people saw the veterans getting the best healthcare possible, and helped reintroduced to life, got paid more and get a huge tax reduction, we may see massive improvements to our military. I fully support anyone who wants to serve and protect America and our Allies. Its just super disorganized right now. A guy I worked with was a Desert STorm veteran. You can tell he was still on edge despite how friendly and kind he was.

I keep hearing and reading about the helmet-mounted displays and other tech within the Imperial Stormtrooper armour. It's a shame we don't get to see the POVs from first-person shooters (like in the Halo games for the Spartans' and ODSTs' helmets and the Republic Commando game for the Clone Commandos' helmets) where players get to play as Imperial Stormtroopers and see examples of the mentioned tech from the first-person shooter perspective.
From the descriptions, it sounds like plastoid armour functions analogously to real-world ballistic soft armour (like Kevlar) and hard-plate ceramic composite armour, i.e. they take the brunt of the damage. However, the wearer might still get nasty bruises and maybe some cracked ribs at worst, with both types of body armour materials needing to be replaced after the hits.

I imagine that being a stormtrooper from Sullust had more drawbacks than most people realize. For starters, there was a large population of Alderaanians living on the planet of Sullust when the planet of Alderaan itself was destroyed by the Empire, so there would then be a large population of anti-imperials on the planet, both Alderaanian and natural born Sullustans who were friends and even family of the Alderaanians. In addition to this threat to anyone wearing a stormtrooper uniform, the planet was inhabited by large subterranean creatures called "rockrenders" that could burrow quickly through the planet's hard rock surface and preferred to eat materials rich in minerals such as stormtrooper armor as opposed to plain human/humanoid flesh. (This information from the "Princess Leia" comic book series.)

I can only speak to America of course, but here there's this notion that "I'm only voting for politician A because of issue(s) X, Y, and/or Z, so I'm not responsible for whatever else they do." People will vote a certain way but feel it's completely unfair to be judged by their party, or the judges their party appoints, or other things the party does. And I'm not talking about some one-off mistake where you voted for someone who turned out to be completely different than expected. I'm talking about voting for people who stand for very specific terrible things, consistently, over years, and yet somehow thinking you're not responsible for those terrible things when they happen.

We're all monsters. No one is innocent. No one. Sidious understands this. Vader does.
As does Yoda and Luke. They get it better. Jedi on a whole? Too busy trying to claim some deluded moral high ground that doesn't even exist. Anakin learned that the hard way.
Think Obi Won let himself get killed because he couldn't live knowing he was a coward? He knows he failed Anakin/Vader after all.

What is the point of standardized body armor, if said armor can not stop small-arms fire from low powered weapons ( example: handheld blasters ) ?
Since it is cannon the Galactic Empire had severe financial problems, wouldn't it be cheaper just to issue standard cloth uniforms with a helmet?
