  • Last fall actor and woodworker NIck Offerman (NBC's Parks and Recreation) found himself with some time to kill in New York City while his wife was working on Broadway, so he decided to build a couple of Bear Mountain Boats canoes. After reading Canoecraft, Nick produced this canoe building video as a companion to Canoecraft. This sample focuses on Creating the Mold Stations. Visit www.bearmountainboats.com for more info on this DVD.

    With this channel and Primitive Technology, I'm not sure why any other youtube channel exists. Is there a reason to ever look at another channel? I can't see myself ever needing anything more.

    Seen this type of molds year after year. Just fine for "oh it will float" canoe building. If you want a custom design(something thats not in a book duh someones so-so family standard designs), you design your own. Built 22 since 1969( on #23 now). I did one my first copying someone elses forms. Every canoe since then has been laid out on the floor with waterline point plotting(with a canoe racers need for speed& manuverbility). Use a "T"- shaped strong back made from glued smaller 3/4" plywood in staggered side by side glueing(i control straightness in making a 1&1/2" wide by 4" tall what ever lenght for my canoe. Simple 2 x 4" board with the laminated plywood(two thickness of plywood) in an upside down "T" shape. I centered the stong back to be laid out thru each form(uses far less pylwood than seen in this vid). Most i have done have been 8" between form cent-lines on strongback, but if you want to see the most far out tech ever done for a canoe prototype build click on my icon, and expand to see my 3 racer canoe builds.

    the smart man knows how to get precise symmetrical forms using a router and a half template, but the lazy man only sees the extra step and not the speed. cant a man just build a boat in peace?

    Now I remember why I didn't do well at carpentry, I don't have the patience for it. I prefer to just wing it and just do it on the fly, which is ok for simple stuff like tables but not for construction...

    Would it be more practical to glue the patterns to the plywood, make the cuts, and then sand off the pattern? I've never built a boat before, but I've used that method on other projects.

    • @aidanhodge7090
      @aidanhodge7090 6 років тому +2

      - - only if you are okay with destroying the pattern. Those patterns are usually over $100 and can be used to build multiple boats, so sanding them away is rather a waste.
      What he could have done though was glue them to a seperate plywood hammer a nail sideways into the pattern, then press the plywood he intended to cut on to the nails and hammer. When he lifts up he should have groves to hammer nails sideways in again and use those as his tacks for the battons to make the fair lines. Visit tips from a shipwright's youtube channel for his sports dory series to see him do it in person

      Aidan Hodge once the molds are cut you can make multiple boats from them.
      Spray adhesive the mold to the wood and cut it with a jigsaw.

      It makes more sense when you see the whole thing - this is actually an excerpt from "Fine Woodstrip Canoe Building with Nick Offerman." It works as a companion to the book Canoecraft, a guide to building your own canoe. Nick finished this boat, Huckleberry, and paddled it in the harbour in Red Hook. I hope he's entertaining, but he also takes his woodworking seriously!

    • @justinnitsuj7041
      @justinnitsuj7041 7 років тому

      Agreed...but to say he takes his woodworking serious would be an insult to Offerman...this makes more sense if one has heard him talk about his woodworking model. What's more Offerman has said himself this wasn't his "project" (the video series).
      He is generally entertaining, but as a person I find him inspiring...particularly because of how he sets up his woodshops.

      Try sanding with the plywood sanding block Marc uses “ the wood whisper” I think it would spring to the curve better and a no 20 Stanley of s no 113 circular plane could work.

    Where would you come down on the idea of using some sort of digital technique to transfer the pattern? I've been building a lot of props out of foam, and I'm working on an automated wire hot-wire cutter which could be modified to scribe a pattern on a sheet of plywood. Is that more or less wholesome than using the carbon paper technique?

    • @Canoecraft
      @Canoecraft  6 років тому +1

      You'll want accurate forms, obviously, but I can't see any reason carbon paper is absolutely required. Let us know how it works out if you try it!
