Filling My Roman Szmal Watercolour Paint Palette! I Chose Four New Colours + Swatching & Painting
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- I have finally filled up my large tin of Roman Szmal watercolours, yay! I only needed four more pans to fill it, so today I will show you which colours I chose, plus swatching them out, painting with the limited palette, and then fully reorganizing my entire palette! This was so satisfying.

That's a beautiful potters pink. Much more pink than my daniel smith version. Yep, very very pretty.
My favourite was Winsor & Newton's version, but now this one tops even that!
Roman Smzal watercolours are great. I collected quite a few over the years. Adamstown Art supplies in NSW sell them too and they are a similar price to Jackson.
Ok that's good to know! I've heard of that store, I didn't know they sold Roman Szmal. I'll keep that in mind for the future, thanks. 🙂
@@BeckyTregear they also sell Rosa Gallery since this month.
Misty morning is stunning. Thanks Becky:)
I am so glad I picked that one! 💙
Oooh I love Roman Szmal ❤️. Lovely palette! 😍
I am glad I picked the colours I did, to add in those purple shades. I had forgotten how many blues were in there, lol!
Love that misty morning so pretty!
You can quite easily leverage out the metal bars leaving just the base tray. You can then stick magnets on the bottom of your pans and they will be held firmly in place. This avoids using the empty tin with its wobbly bottom. Not sure exactly how many more pans you will fit in, I have used this on smaller tins to get them to fit 12 full pans from white Nights but it also works with other full pans, only excepting Winsor and Newton.
I love these colours btw, and am grateful for you showing so clearly what they look like in use. They are really beautiful. Now I need an extra tin too!
I have yet to find anywhere that sells the right kind of magnets to stick on pans, so I will leave it as is and not make too much of a mess, haha! But if and when I find good magnets, things may yet change again, lol.
@@BeckyTregear I don’t know if you’ve tried this but I use magnetic tape which I cut to half or full pan size pieces. I remove the non-adhesive strip from the sticky part of the magnetic tape and then stick it to the bottom of my pan and then the non-sticky magnetic side sticks to the metal palette. The magnet isn’t incredibly strong and I have removed the magnetic tape from my pans without any mess. It does the job and prevents the pans from rolling around. I’ve also seen small magnetic discs for craft projects, but I haven’t tried those.
His all 👋🏼. You could also use tack such as blue tack. I use tack and I find it very strong and useful. Plus, it’s my no. 1 choice for a kneaded eraser. 😊
@@BeckyTregear just ordinary magnetic sheet or tape can be used. Mine came with dots punched into it, and what was left could also be cut up and used. Pans are only tiny and the magnets work well. I think I have seen the pans placed 90° to the way I have mine too, which uses the space more efficiently. I have been thinking about doing this to my Rosa Gallery as well as the Aquarius…
@@awatercolourist hello! It’s great to use one product for multiple purposes.
Gorgeous! Heck, even your swatch-chart is a work of art.
I really like that page in my sketchbook; happy colours!
Thank you for the video :) I run along the tape with the end of the long side of a plastic ruler that came in one of those 'mathimatical instrument tins' that contain a compass, pencil, eraser etc. Any ruler will do, as long as the corner is curved a little to keep it clear of the paper and not scuff it. This should make a nice seal on the tape.
I should have done that! 😂
@@BeckyTregear I have never used Washi tape, just masking tape from the supermarket. But taking the masking tape off damages some of my cheaper practice paper. Is Washi tape more paper friendly? Or do people use it because it looks nicer?
@@niafer9444 Washi tape generally has a lower adhesion than masking tape. Here is is called Low Tack tape. There are ones specifically for artists, but washi tape is generally a lot easier to find, and usually cheaper. Plus it's pretty! You can also use painters tape for "Delicate" surfaces, as that is also low tack. Medium or high tack tapes will rip paper a lot more easily, and I find masking tape is usually at least medium so is too sticky. That's my understanding of the whole situation, haha!
So many different tape leaks, my favorite is Holbein tape its awesome, no leaks, or paper tearing.
That violet.. I want one... Just beautiful!
That misty was a surprise!
And they work quite well together too so win win situation! The palette looks great, it got me curious about these watercolours.
I am glad I picked up a set of them - dare I say that this week they are on sale at Jackson's too! 😂
very pretty pallette. And the painting is very pretty, too. Thanks for showing.
Thank you, I'm really happy with how it has turned out!
Such great color choices - some of my favorites!
I am very happy with the ones I picked - it was so hard choosing just four, haha!
Love the colours. Ideal for landscapes. Your paintings are great and atmospheric, too.
Thank you so much 😀
Hi Becky, those are beautiful colors! I don't have a favorite but I am partial to pinks and pirples.
My palette only had the magenta, so it definitely needed more pinks and purples!
Love the new colors! Overall the palette has some stunning colors!!
Becky, I have teeny tiny little request. Can also mention the brushes you are using to paint?
Thank you! I used an assortment of brushes. Silver Brush Black Velvet No. 8 for swatching, and let's see.....possibly a Princeton Elite for washing the background. I think if I used others they would have been from those two brands.
Roman Szmal watercolors are on my wish list. Glad you have them and shared with us. I am fond of your new Shadow Grey (I too like Paynes Grey); but I like them all
Shadow Grey is a very useful one! That and the Mineral Violet are the two darkest colours in my palette.
what fascinating colours! I loved the limited palette colours and painting that you did, but me personally I'd swap the purple for the other shadow colour there in the palette, what a lovely muted mini palette that would be! But saying that I do love the painting you did with the 4 new colours stunning! Great vid as always, thank you! :D
The other shadow violet is also really lovely and would definitely work as a limited palette with the others. Now I can use them all together, yay! 😊
I love all 4 colours you picked!
I am happy that all four worked out well - as is often the case I will pick at least one which I then later regret, but not this time, yay!
Really nice additions! I’d remove at least one blue, if not two, and add in another green and the red from that mini-palette.
Yes, it did come with rather a lot of blues! Maybe the curator artist paints a lot of blue things, lol.
Your four new colors are fab and your painting shows how well they go together. I buy watercolors to use and collect. A Roman Szmal palette is on my wish list. Not sure if or when I’ll get one. I feel as if I need to finish something before I can buy something else, but that might take a while. Not sure I can wait that long 🤣!
I know the feeling! My watercolour drawer cabinet is full so I need to use them all, which is going to take forever, lol. I figured this was filling up a set I already had so that doesn't count. 😉
@@BeckyTregear 😁 I like your thinking Becky! 🥳
You have impeccable taste in colors. Your new ones are gorgeous.
Thank you so much! I spent a long, long time dithering over which ones to choose. Happy to report that there is no buyer's remorse. 😂
Great choices. I love Roman Szmal and I have all those colours❤
If money was no object, I'd have ALL the Roman Szmal colours! 😂
I would use that Shadow Grey on so many things, its a lovely colour 😀
I love it; so useful! 💕
I fit 35 in the tray. I like to take it out of the metal box, when I paint.
What I do to fit 35 in the tray is taking out the 2 central metal row. You just have to pull them out. You can put them back after if you want. You can put 3 rows of pans between the two outward metal rows. I fix the pans with magnets or blue tack. They fit snuggly.
Thank you, I’ll have to try taking that metal row out! 👍
I really love to mix colours, so I have a limited palette of about 12 - 14 which includes warm and cool primaries, earth colours, payne's grey and neutral tint. But I can see the attraction of collecting all these different shades. Lots of fun and pretty to swatch/look at. Cheers.
Mixing colours is great too! I will be releasing a video hopefully in the next few weeks with a split primary set. But for Roman Szmal I figured I'd choose some more unusual paints just to have some variety. Also I am lazy, haha!
Great picks! I have 3 out of 4 colors. Misty morning is one of my favorites! The Pink peaking through makes it look interesting!
It's a fabulous colour! 😊
💜💜💜tfs💜💜💜 misty morning is gorgeous.... like seriously! Of course Mineral Violet is my fav, cause purple, but Misty Morning is a close 2nd
Misty Morning ended up being the real showstopper for me! But I love all of them really, and that Mineral Violet is a gorgeous colour.
Really lovely colors! I am thinking of ordering a few pans to try out as well. I know you're likely not at all looking to rearrange this palette again, but I think in your shoes I would take out a few of the blues and add in a few of those pans from the set of 5 you got, bulk out a few of the other colors since there's so much blue overlap. That aquarius green, maybe, and maybe the azo red. I also prefer the french ultramarine I think, since it would add an interesting variation to the blues with some granulation options. (at a glance I might swap out the blue sky and the phtalo turq. shades, and just trade out the ultramarine shades and see how that felt.)
Stunning palette though, I am green with envy!
Haha yes, there are a lot of blues in this palette! But I'll live with it; I'll just have to do a series of blue-heavy paintings, lol. Otherwise they are really excellent paints and are well worth a try.
The colors are so beautiful and vibrant. The extra colors you bought are very beautiful, especially the granulating and two tone ones. I’ve put them on my wish list. 🫶👩🏼🎨
I love them all! I'm really impressed with Roman Szmal paints, they are so lovely to use. ❤
Love all the colours! :)
Thanks, me too! I am happy with them all. 😊
Hi! Love your videos. I actually found an Australian shop that stocks these. I have 4 colours on the way to try :) Adamstown Art in NSW.
Thank you, adding that to my future list - a store I might need to visit one day!
@@BeckyTregear They arrived yesterday, Buff Titanium, Cobalt Teal, Cyprus Burnt Umber, and Mars Black. I loved them so much I went back and ordered another 8 colours :D Replacing what was left in my palette from my Cotman paints. So now I will have a mix of Daniel Smith, Schminke and Roman Szmal. Eventually I'd love a palette for each, but at the moment it's too $$$.
@@sharonc2353 Lovely! It is fun building a big collection over time. 😊
I ordered their travel pallet from Jackson's and I can't wait for it to arrive. They are half pans.
Also I wanted to tell you, if I don't have enough room to write all the information, I'll write the pigment information inside the swatch boxes. 😁
They have a half pan travel set??? Must...resist...😂 I didn't write in the boxes for filming purposes, but I might add them in after. I wrote the info on all of the pans themselves so that should be fine.
You picked amazing colors
Thank you! It took me a long time to decide which ones to choose, haha.
@@BeckyTregear they have so many wonderful colors!
I wonder why they don’t sell these in the US yet. Thanks for the video.
They seem to be mostly still in UK and Europe, though apparently at least one store in Australia sells them, as I found out today from another viewer.
@@BeckyTregear My son is currently doing a semester at Monash. Maybe I’ll have him look for the paint. Thank you for your reply.
Loved the painting Becky, how did you draw out the swatching boxs, I can never get them right. Have you any of 6hscwhite nights new granulating paints Becky? If you have what did you think ofvthem? I've ordered them but put them away for christmas
I spent a whole lot of time with my ruler and calculator, lol! Oh yes I have seen their granulating paints, and they look very pretty indeed! I am torn though due to their country of origin, so I am kind of avoiding them for now. How is your recovery going?
@@BeckyTregear still a lot of stitches and very sore but I've got to go for a biopsy on Monday for a dark mark on the same foot they think it might be skin cancer, it's hard going through this on my own. Thank you for asking means a lot Becky
@@sueallen952 I hope that all gets sorted, and sorry you are going through it alone. 😢💖
I have those colours and they are amazing today I just ordered 12 new collars on their sale I didn’t know and now I’m thinking I should’ve ordered one of their tins. Lol
Hi Jacquline 👋🏼. Fancy seeing you here!
@@awatercolourist HI there.Did you see the sale?
@@JacquelineJax Hello! No, unfortunately I didn’t. Actually, I wasn’t all that free the past four or so weeks. Plus, I’m not in Canada and my experience with customs where I live has not been great 🫤.
@@awatercolourist I never seem to get a duty charge when they use regular international shipping so that may be an option. It clears customs quickly just takes an extra week.
@@JacquelineJax Thanks! I actually tried both regular shipping and DHL and both experiences were not good. Actually, with DHL I had to return the shipment back to Jackson’s. The customs was twice the price of the products I got and the process was complicated.
Becky if you could only choose 12 or 3 sets of the Schmincke super granulation colours/sets what would they be?
That's a hard question, haha! Probably my two favourite sets would be Tundra and Haze.
First!
🙂 First to like 😄❤️
Likes are always appreciated, especially that first one! Thank you 😊
