If Andy reads this, he could never pick up a stick again, but rest assured, your legacy in metal is set, dude. You laid down some awesome drums during your time in Chimaira. It'll live on. We all want you to come back and play, but don't feel any pressure. Legacy = set! 🤘

Not to divulge too much of my personal life on here but listening to what he went through is 100% exactly what I went through, around the same time. The gut issues, sleep, ADD, memory, chronic pain, doctors. I quit playing drums, guitar, and couldn't ride my motorcycle anymore. I used the Ketogenic diet to slowly get my energy back, like seriously low carb for almost a year. This cleared life long gut issues. I went from going to bed after going for a 15 minute run to running 5k and lifting 300 pds off the ground in about a year. Since my year long stint on Keto I use periods of fasting and eating once a day (it's been 5 years now). My only explanation is that it is some kind of mitochondrial dysfunction. I was told the keto diet would kill me and was highly advised not to do it and he's probably been told the same and that's a shame because it might catapult him out of it. Fasting is key for me and if your body is not using fat as a source of fuel then you need to train it, it's vital to health. This has made a massive difference in dealing with the chronic pain and brain fog long term. I wish him the best, I want to see him, you and Chimaira back at it! Cheers Andols for coming out and speaking about it because we are not alone and so many can't relate at all. We are in the dark! A very talented friend of mine also struggles with this.

I think all the advice Rob shared with Andols was spot on. One thing I’d add, is for Andols spend at least 15-30 mins each day doing something that helps him reach his goals - workout, practice drums, etc. And do it, even if he doesn’t want too. Plus remember it’s ok make mistakes or have set backs.
Something else I’d suggest... maybe start an Andols Herrick come back group Where fans like myself can all come together and support Andols in his journey - it may even help many of us. Ex: He works out Mon, we all work out Monday. He practices music, we all practice music. If times align, maybe even do a large zoom / google meet video. Basically a support group. Lord knows I could use something like this as well.

As someone who also suffers from CFS as well as chronic pain and arthritis among other issues, I really feel his pain with how it affects daily life and the whole guinea pig routine having to go through a million different doctors who just are in it for the money. I’m also someone who has always been into fitness like Andols and it’s true about how quickly your body can change and go downhill. I hope he gets some relief soon, I would love to hear more drumming from him, he’s one of the best.

Since i got into metallica in my early teens, there was really never another band after that, where i purchased the dvds, the records, shirts, merch and just really connected with since i heard "painting" on wsou 89.5 when i was about 21. Chimaira was top tier for me, and so was andols.
Again, to get me to be invested in a band as heavily as i was into metallica, took a shitload. You've absolutely shaped my mind further into what metal is and how aggressive it can be, but also how beautiful it can be. Thanks for that. Cheers from NYC.

I watched the entire video, and it's extremely appreciated that Andols was prepared to open up. There are many people who can not picture his daily ongoing battles, but there really are people out there who do understand. I too am in a sortof similar situation, where I kinda isolated myself hermite-wise so I didn't have to bother anyone with my issues (from a medical incident 3 years ago). This video kinda made me realize it is possible to open up, and just come clean.... That's a moment that still needs to happen ... This could actually have happened in March for me, but unfortunately covid got in the way of things, and my route to opening up got blocked. Now it's a waiting game for me ... on more than one level... Strength, perseverance, and support wished to Andols! And I spotted some positivity in his eyes when talking about the glorious nostalgic stuff. That indeed is good alternative medication when everything else fails. Positive memories, positive thoughts, positive energy!
And thank you for asking about the Roadrunner United project! I love his work with Robb Flynn on that album! Robb Flynn actually did a cool interview with Monte Conner some months ago, in which he talked about the RR project, fantastic to have watched it (once, however, because the video was pulled down recently, bugger!)

Hi Rob, this chat you had with Andols was truly awesome. I can tell by just watching this 2 hour video that his whole persona changed for the better the longer this conversation went on. Seeing Andols become so frail is hard to take in, but he started to seem more positive the longer this went on. I honestly think your time spent with Andols here has reopened his enthusiasm to truly want to come back. It's one thing laying around thinking about it but it's another thing entirely when you have real people communicating the fact that he's missed, and that people actually care!
I honestly believe that regular chats like this with Andols and yourself (or any of the other guys in Chimaira) will help him. (They don't have to be made public for all to see)
A massive thank you goes out to Andols for agreeing to do this with you. I can't imagine it was easy for him. I truly look forward to purchasing the album that you and Andols have created. I don't know too much about it, but, are these songs all instrumentals or is there a singer, if so, who?

Went through a tough break up. Started shutting ppl out.playin games n chilling. Anxiety ridden. Scared.frozen In time. He started looking back on his time in the band as the golden age. Even tho he wanted to be done with it and was the reason for pushing everyone away. He just hermitised. And got nothing done for years. Taking medications n stuff to be numb.when they weren't designed for that. Years on anti depressants and seroquel to sleep and xanax to basically get calm...but doubling up to get high and forget life and problems shocks your nervous system.it made anxiety worse.had bowel issues. Etc. Frozen in time. dwelling. Not making new friends.not experiencing life.not in as rekationsjip.no kids.basicly lifeless Just letting the 20s and 30s rolling in like age 16 was his prime.theres no cure for that. Doctors want to prescribe pills but theyre not you. They dont help, they hurt.your brain is in control of the body and your in control of what you feed your brain. Reading news away from ppl, not talking.being a hermit, seeking doctors....its all bullshit.chronic problems are part of being still and letting life beat you over the head.It sounds like when andols got going he was just laughing.he seemed comfortable.he wasn't clearing his voice. Reminds me of another friend, he wanted to be in a band, then he was, than hed leave and complain, than miss it than come back.than leave. Hed get drunk n weird.he was sexually frustrated.i once had to stop someone from kicking his ass when he grabbed a girl at a party once.
Anyway that dude reminds me of andols when he left.he wanted time.he obviously missed it. Did other things.stopped school.wasnt content.came back etc.
It seems hes worried about his story being over. Trying to find his way as he said. Trying to stay on the straight n narrow. It sounds like hes got a bit if adhd, mixed with some PTSD, and possibly fear of the world, or not fitting in or being comfortable or having his place in the world along with possibly thinking of things he missed out on...those seem to be the big issues that have most likely led to his current state.
I'm no doctor, but the way he describes his medical issues reminds me of my aunt a little bit. In that there's no diagnosis.
This part has nothing to do with andols, but my aunt hasn't had a job in 20 years and had 2 failed marriages. She'd slam her breaks at a green light ,more th as n one time, and get rear ended and complain about her back.and the pain.on n on n on. Drugged upon meds. Drinks on em. She's a real piece of shit honestly.and no doc can feel bad for her so they send her on her way .meds n all. And she gets ssi.the cycle continues.
But I feel bad for andols cuz he doesn't have a definitive diagnosis. The terms he uses aren't tangible they're a kind of verbage ,step around. I think he just lost his way a little bit, and let a few normal things that we as all go through, breakups.lost love.the one that got away that we thought we'd have a family with etc, and let it be a catalyst for rotting brain syndrome. He himself says he doesn't wanna get out of bed. So it doesn't sound like he cant.he chuckles too.i really wish I could chat with him. I think he needs some small doses of mushrooms which can be enough to break his PTSD and stillness of his life. Cuz the years are ticking and hes clearly missed out on a big chunk of life..ive been depressed and still deal with it, weeks and months at a time.followed by months of greatness.i know that feeling of not wanting to get out of bed and wishing I was dead. But ya gotta stay in motion. You cant sit in silence and read news. Ya gotta play drums, put music on go outside, get a dog.go for walks etc.
I really think andols is in a funk that he can break out of.doctors will never ever help him. And for someone who worked out I'd think he would be a little more strong minded and educated in doctors, the shpiel, the Guinea pig..and how the American healthcare machine has no interest in helping him,as well as the relationship between body n mind n how the second he flushes the stuff doctors put in his head,as well as any medication, goes cold Turkey and gets on the drums, will bed the greatest day of his life
    I'm no doctor.
these are just my 2 cents.theres slot more personal stuff he clearly got choked up on that he didnt want to mention.i get it.its hard to put this out there.hes stronger than me.This isnt a slam. This is a guy who after not seeing for ten years, and was in tip top shape in 09 on the infection tour, dissappeaper totally and it saddens me his current state.
I hope he sees the love, and possibly reads this or gets something out of it. We all go through stuff and I dont think hes too far gone.i think he has chronic issues that slowly manifested after doctors told him "were trying to figure this out, well give it a name and well feed you a pill". If real doctors just told ppl "hey it might be something down n the road, come back in a few months if you need to, but for now, your healthy as fuck" and gave them a smile, even if it was a lie, itd make ppl forget, and they wouldn't stress themselves out. Into sum condition to be treated.
I swear if you take a totally healthy human and tell them they have cancer, they'll rot away into nothing just as if they did have it.just from the stress. Cuz this is how powerful the mind is. When you buy into fear , and eat it, the body n mind will turn on itself.i dont doubt some of the shit hes going through, but I think hes unhappy.and a smile and laughter (as seen in this conversation) is the best medicine. And it warms my heart rob. 2 buds, hell lifelong ,just catching up.its good shit. Cheers

Thanks so much for this video, Ive been a massive Chimaira fan since Pass out of existence and bands like yourselves have influenced me so much and made me want to learn to play the drums myself and I now play in a local metal band.
I too suffer with Anxiety and depression (although not to the high degree that Andols does)and have done for over 15 years and the physical and mental symptoms that Andols has described I can relate to so much. Some days are good and some days are bad but working out at the gym, playing drums and listening to metal music is my Savior and has helped me keep pushing on.
Massive thanks for Andols for being so open and talking about his struggles as too many suffer in silence and think they are the only ones going through physical and mental pain when in actual fact many others are in the same situation and people talking openly about it makes a massive difference to other sufferers.
Cant wait to see Andols behind the kit again and I know it will happen one day!
    Thanks again

Besides the legendary drumming.. one of the funniest things ever was when you guys had Andy go through his apartment on one of the DVDs I have. Like an MTV cribs episode lol.. minus the expensive crib..classic..

This is so sad man. I hope andols gets better in himself and maybe he'll drum again one day I hope so but the most important thing is his recovery. He's one of the greatest drummers to ever pick up the sticks. His drumming is quality!!! Get well soon andols

So impressed he recorded to a plain click track mostly. That just shows the true brain memory power this guy has. I bet 1 in 50 drummers might be able to do that. He wanted clarity. That is next level in itself. Once I recorded to a click it made writing so much cleaner. Reference points etc..

Being a former metal band guitarist who toured extensively in the 2000’s, this hits home what was talked about with the anxiety and not having any interest in the instrument currently. This was a good listen, thanks guys.

2 days ago I came back all the way to Jade to release some harsh emotions and your music still works even 15 years later from where it meant the world to me. There I saw you guys did it and like a month ago, I am really stunned. I remember hanging out with you guys before your gig in Warsaw which by the way was great while you were doing your Ressurection EU run. That gig was a total blast. Chimaira will always have a very special place in my heart. What is more, Katatonia being my most favorite band of all time since the beginning of 2000s. Makes me really feel Andols and his struggle. Katatonia is like a medicine that heals you when you shift through the dark. Love you guys for sharing your awesome music with the world and this deep and meaningful conversation. I have picked up drumming again after 15 years of not playing and I realise Andols is one of my biggest influences when it comes to drumming. Rock on guys, and all the best to both of you forever and always!

Without struggle there is no progress. Best wishes Andols. One of the coolest names ever. Lol. Andols always has this mysticism about him. He is so talented, he could play anything or any style. In the DHP doc, I remember him destroying a part in the studio, after he finishes he starts slowly punching his snare. My read into that- I’m soo good and can play anything, but Rob has programmed me to destroy! 🤘♥️👊

Rob, when Andy was talking about his low stuff at the beginning...the look on your face was the look of a man who, should he bump into the deciding force for humanity you’d rip its fucking head off for hurting your friend. You guys may not have spoke in ages or whatnot but real friendship is like family. You so love him and that look of rage behind your eyes for his circumstances was louder than any words xxxx send my love to him

Right around 39 minutes, when Rob is telling him "anytime you want, you just have to commit to it.." - I can feel some pain back there, like Rob just telling him "come on man! everyone misses you, we want you back with the crew!" - but trying not to be overbearing. I felt that shit
