The Kamphaengdin (earth and clay wall) was built about 150 years after the old city. As the population spread outside the walls, to protect the people outside the "old city" from floods and intruders, the Kamphaengdin was built just inside the Klong Mae Kha from near the NE corner of the moat (Sri Poom corner) around to the south and east, then south and over to just south of the SW corner of the moat (Ku Hueang Corner). If you walk directly south from Ku Hueang Corner into Kanchanaphisek Park, a 100-150 meter stretch of the Kamphaengdin can be seen.

Yeah, the Kampaengdin (earthen wall) runs (or used to run) in a semi circle all along the east then southern part and back up to Kanchanphisek park. built with the earth dug and following beside the The Khlong (canal) Mae Kha. I've tried to follow it as far as I could a few times. This is pretty much where the expression "hole in the wall" comes from, going back to Medieval times when shop houses were dug into old Roman ruins. From what I've gleaned; the areas around the Khlongs, river banks were/are(?) "up for grabs" so the very poor could build shacks along them (though they can and do get ripped down by the government. ) Supposedly a good place for black market operations instead of renting or buying land.

As a 47 year resident of Chiang Mai Khampang Din was infamously known even to Visitors from Bangkok. There were 3 things every visitor to the city would do, was said tongue and cheek. 1Go to Doi Suthep Temple. 2 Eat Koa Soy(a local dish) 3 visit the girls in Kampang Din. Even today there is some night life going on but as a foreigner it would be difficult and maybe not even welcomed. unless you speak Thai or the local dialect

Yes, there were many brothels on Kampangdin road with prices ranging from THB 20-100, depending on the colour of the buttons on their shirt/blouse. You got a 'free' condom. Some time in the mid 80's, Bangkok sent some cops and they closed them down, but it was still possible to get a '' piece '' if you knew where to go. There were a couple on Loi Kroa soi 3 and quite a few in Santhitam area. All you had to do was speak to a samlor driver. This was before tuk tuks came to Chiang mai. After the cops came, prices increased. One of the very first bars ( if not the first ) on Loi Kroa was Linda's. Don't know if it's still there. I lived in Chiang mai from 1980-2003, now in Isaan.

    • @UTCM

The big problem was the NGO's were pressuring the Thai Gov't to rage the age of consent, as there were many very young Hill tribe girls involved in the business. The Thai gov't raised the age for a prostitute, she must be 18, but a girl or boy can engage in sex at the age of 15 with any partner as long as it is not prostitution.

In the early 90s there was a brothel area outside the moat, roughly just behind what is now Miguels Mexican. I recall wandering down there at night once - roads were unpaved, no street lights, old-style teak houses, pretty much the only lights were the red lamps in the front of the brothels. As I passed by one house a mamasan persuaded me to "just take a look", and inside there were half a dozen pre-teen girls. I made an excuse and got the heck outta there!
