    Part 4:
Winter Efteling is also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! The Dutch theme park with a Dickens look and feel. And probably one of the best winter theme parks in the world. During weekdays you can get cheap tickets at some sites. (29 euro). Several museums also get a Christmas look and feel. The railroad museum in Utrecht is one of them and always great to visit.

The Efteling is one of the parks that Walt Disney visited to get inspiration for Disneyland. It's nearly 60 years old but there are many modern rides which are all themed around fairytales and myths.

A bit late, but I just had to let you know.
My group of friends and me have this tradition of meeting during the Glow festival, we live all across the country nowadays, but for this occasion we all come back to our roots, we have dinner at the same pub we used to go to 40 years ago (and it’s still looks exactly the same, nothing has actually been changed there in all this time). And then we walk the Glow route, I do think the last few years it was less impressive than before, but maybe I got a bit spoiled over the years. But if you’re interested check out the video’s on UA-cam from earlier years, the projections on St. Catharina Cathedral, the Augustijnen church and on Wilhelmina square were phenomenal! Not static projections but whole movies. What impressed me most was the projection on the Augustijnen church, the church tower was spinning around! So awesome! I live near the centre of the city so most of the places you visited, I can see from my window …
    Love your video’s ❤

I was born in Eindhoven and still work there. It was nice to see you had a good time with Glow. It is a beautiful light art festival.
About christmas in the Netherlands, you can make it as big as you want. There will be kerstmarkten (christmasmarkets) but the best christmasmarkets are in Germany. If you love christmasshopping it is worth the trip.
There will also be big nativity scenes to see, a lot of times in or near churches. Sometimes with living animals. But most of this you can only see after Sinterklaas is gone (6th december) A lot of people wait with a christmastree until after Sinterklaas, but don't let that stop you from putting up the christmastree earlier if you want to.
Me and my family don't give presents to each other because we do that with Sinterklaas, but others do give presents. Some people, including my family, do something called gourmetten. It is a fun way of cooking and eating together. I hope you have a great first christmas here.

Glow is a very cool festival of lights. Eindhoven is the Dutch city of lights, mainly because of the origin of the Philips company. Nowadays the region is famous for being "Brainport of Europe", as in (sort of) being the European Silicon Valley.
Dutch Christmas time is "Americanizing", but it sets off after Sinterklaas. Traditionally the 25th is the big family day, with a lot of eating involved. The 26th is called "tweede kerstdag" at which is more a day of going out.
Hope you are having a great time in my country and will feel welcome and at home over here.

After Christmas we have the 'kerstboomverbranding' here, I don't know if that's a thing in the Netherlands as well. If it is you probably should go check out a local one. Basically all the Christmas trees get collected, thrown on a big pile, light them up and there are always lots of food and drink stalls around it.

Eindhoven is called the City of Light ("lichtstad" in Dutch) because two brothers called Philips started a lightbulb factory there in the 19th century. Their company grew out to become a multinational corporation and the once sleepy village of Eindhoven became a city as the company grew. Philips is known for having invented the compact cassette and compact disc (CD).

    Part 5:
Another Dutch tradition is the Christmas Circus, big tents where artist perform doing acrobatics. Most garden centers have huge Christmas displays usually with moving displays and sometimes projection mapping.
Last but not least the living nativity scene or Kerststal in dutch. One of the most famous is in the Cathedral in Den Bosch. (City with the binnendieze, river you can take boat tour below city) It is popular so go in the morning. However close to Leiden in Noordwijk they have a nativity scene with actors in a tower.
Hope this will get your Christmas feelings flowing, and making you feel more at home here.

Hey I live in Belgium and the closest thing we got as a Christmas tradition, is going for a long walk in the Ardennes with my mom and dad. In the holidays it's probably the only place in Belgium where you could find some snow. Now I kind of hate snow (I don't like things that are cold or wet, snow is both so yeah) but I do find it pretty to watch. Especially in nature, so that probably the only time I could enjoy snow, and it has some nostalgia to me. As a kid I can remember having snow with Sinterklaas, not anymore. And also having snow with Christmas, also not anymore. So that's why I love those walks with my mom and dad, it brings back some of those family memories.
The rest of the holidays are just eating, drinking and gifts. Big family so lots of things to do with them.

I also hope you can attend a Sinterklaas party somewhere, usually many companies have a party for expat’s. I have had several when working at a big Dutch bank.
Or maybe ask the neighbors or colleagues if you can join them or at least help. Usually the neighbors knock on the door when the presents are being delivered at the door. Christmas markets also get me in the mood for the holidays. As mentioned before, Germany has some great markets. But most Dutch cities have them as well. I like Haarlem a lot.

  • @sanderdeboer6034

Great to see you could use on of my suggestions (probably also done by other people) especially considering I couldn’t go to Glow this year. Hope you saw most of the installations, more than what you showed in the video. To get into the Christmas spirit you can go to one of many Dickens Festivals.
Where people dress up in 19th century clothing and play characters from the books of Charles Dickens. Usually also Christmas choirs, a market, lights and big fires.
I see that Medemblik (nice town with castle), Veere, Drunen, Arcen (scrooge festival), Deventer, Steenwijk, Bronckhorst and Krommenie are still planing to hold the festival.

'Proost' is only used for drinking! And usually only for alcoholic drinks!
For eating, you can say 'Eet smakelijk'
With Christmas we usually put up a Christmas tree and decorations. As I am from Noord-Brabant, beneath the rivers therefore, I also put up a little Christmas "shed" (Kerststal in Dutch) with little statues of Jesus, Mary, St Joseph etc. This tradition is disappearing unfortunately. The churches in the South continue this tradition by putting up beautiful Christmas "sheds" + statues. So the St. Jan's cathedral in 's-Hertogenbosch has a very beautiful one every year, many people go to visit it.

Christmas decorations in shops and also in the streets (houses) takes place after December 5. Although years ago, the big chain stores tried to change that by creating the Christmas mood early on. Larger expenditures are made during Christmas shopping. But the Dutch citizens were not supposed to know about this. My generation, baby boomers, experienced Christmas Day more than Americans did with Thanksgiving. You went to your parents wherever the rest of the family was. How that will go with the new generation remains to be seen.

The Glow festival evolved from the old-fashioned illuminations that used to be put up along the main streets every year to celebrate the liberation of Eindhoven on September 18 1944.

The old fashioned illumination along the street is a different thing. It is called ‘lichtjesroute’ (route of lights), and starts every year on September 18 for three weeks to celebrate the liberation of Eindhoven at the end of WWII. The GLOW festival is always in the first week of November and started in 2006 (or a year later?). Both are in Eindhoven and are about light, other then that they are not related.

In our family Christmas was about religion, food, decorations and gezelligheid. For us as kids December was all about Sinterklaas, though. Placing your shoe with a drawing or carrot in it for Sinterklaas' horse and hoping you would find a little present in the morning. We would then get some bigger presents on December 5th when the holy man left the country again on his birthday.
Santaclaus never caught on in my opinion. Probably because of his striking similarities with Sinterklaas. (try to prononounce 'Sinterklaas' with an english tongue and you will know what I mean). Is it true Santa was a commercial invention from the coca cola company? Or is that one of those urban myths? If he was 'invented' I bet the inventor at least had a link with our region.

I think Coca Cola definitely popularized the imagery of Santa Claus in America today, but I think you're right about the Dutch origins. There's conflicting origin stories for sure. Love hearing about your Sinterklaas traditions. Thank you so much for sharing and for watching!

Please wait setting up a christmass tree and do it after the 6th of december . you might get funny looks as its now the time of saint nicolaas . Sinterklaas. He arived last saturday and the next weeks up to the 5th of december it all about him.
After no problem you will see the decorations change in the streets .
A little heads up we celebrate 2 days of christmass . the 24th is christmass eve , then the 25th and 26th are official christmass days and national hollidays.
If you have children they will have 2 weeks free from school .

What would you like to teach? High school jobs here are only open to fully trained teachers (so you can't teach here with TOEFL or similar) and there is no shortage of English teachers, although there is a shortage of most other teachers. So if you are qualified to teach physics, German etc. you shouldn't have a hard time. If you are qualified to teach primary school that should also be doable.
But maybe you're already here and don't need my advice anymore :)

I'm living like 25kmn from Eindhoven (15/16 miles) and i see video's about the Netherlands where they only visit North- and South Holland. Holidays... Well, we just don't overdo things, that's pretty Dutch. Also except for some old people the mostr of us don't believe in that fairytalebook the bible and his actors so chistmas is just because the dog has to have a nametag;). And Sinterklaas is for the children.
Though it's nice to gather and share some love and wishes.
Please learn the Dutch word "gezellig", it is the best way to describe North-Brabant.

Be careful with hot foods and drinks in the Netherlands! You can really burn yourself if you do not watch out.
Bitterballen and Chinese tomatosoup are famous for being extremely hot.
There is a Dutch saying: The soup is served much hotter than it's eaten.
Meaning there can be a lot of fuzz about something, but afterwards it's all about nothing.
But the core truth is: be careful with soup when it is served and maybe take some time before eating it.

Now that you're living here, I'd appreciate it if you'd learn to pronounce things more correctly. "Stroopwafel" for example is not proncounced the way you do. In Dutch, double o is not pronounced the way you do but like the "o" of "dope," in other words it's pronounced "stropewafel." Appreciate you like my hometown, Eindhoven (and my city of birth The Hague).
