@@jasonbear1336 Wow, I thought the ones in the Santa Monica Mountains were worse off because they are literally stuck on an island. But your area seems more open with more corridors for them to move about.
I believe the population of cougars has risen in OC thanks to things like the fence that covers many miles along the 241 toll road. There used to be about one cat killed per year so there are 10 roaming that were not killed over the last 10 years. They are now reporting that mountain lions are on the west side of the I5 in Laguna Niguel and other beach side towns and wilderness areas.
Yeah those fences on the 241 definitely help. That has really been a big percentage of the Mountain Lions killed in Orange County. We still need to get hopefully soon a wildlife crossing at the 15 freeway in Temecula. That is a barrier very few Mountain Lions have crossed. The current Mountain Lion that has been in news is a young male trying to find his way. He ran into trouble in Irvine initially then went all the way to Laguna Beach then Newport Beach.
Hi Jason--reaching out with ABC7 Eyewitness News. We would love to get your permission to distribute this footage, and also ask you a few questions for a news story we are crafting. Please respond to this comment at your convenience so I can get in touch. Thank you!
Am surprised there's been so little PR on this as I'm sure whoever's responsible has mentioned his/her prowess to someone who might have a conscience and anonymously pass on information.. Hopefully we'll be hearing more in the future. Jason, are they anywhere near being considered protected endangered species locally?
There has been a pretty good amount of press on this Mountain Lion being killed. Mountain Lions's in California are already protected. The population is stable throughout the state, but very fragile in Orange County area. Some would argue that this area of habitat of Mountain Lions is the most in jeopardy of extinction in the entire state. Look I'm reasonable if an animal is threatening to humans etc I get it, but just shooting if for the pardon the term for the "fuck" of it is a problem. We as humans screw things up so much, but we are the only ones to fix it as well! Stay wild Jasonbear
@@jasonbear1336 There's an old expression "you break it, you own it" which when applied to endangered wildlife is somewhat problematic in enforcing in that no amount of $ can bring them back once gone. The awareness factor, thanks to you and other nature conservators helps the public understand that not all cougars (for example) are a danger - quite the contrary in fact, keeping nature in balance behind the scenes. Your efforts are most appreciated.
😢
I finally seen the coverage on this on the news this morning. I hope they find the person responsible. This is just so sad.
Do the lions in this area suffer from genetic diversity like the ones living in the Santa Monica mountains?
Yes these are those mountain lions!

@@ballislife9989 These are those same Mountain lions of Santa Ana range. This area is a natural corridor for these big cats.

Are they disclosing were it was shot.
They're not at this time as it is an active investigation by California department of Fish and Wildlife.
What a shame
Someone's a knucklehead.
Hope they catch the person who did this.
