Flubber (1997) - Awfully Good Movies

- With Jon Favreau's new CGI reimagining of THE LION KING roaring into theaters, Awfully Good Movies is celebrating the return of the king by spotlighting another remake that Disney made for one of its classic movies back in 1997 by the name of FLUBBER! Before the Disney company was remaking their animated classics into live action in the 2010s, the House of Mouse was more focused on remaking some of their live-action classics back in the 90s, and after screenwriting legend John Hughes cranked out a successful live-action remake of 101 DALMATIANS back in 1996, Disney rehired Hughes a year later to add a splash of color to their 1961 black-and-white comedy classic THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR, with the one and only Robin Williams now lending his comedic genius to the role of the amnesiac professor who creates the revolutionary "flying rubber" of the title.
But while it sounds good to combine the talents of John Hughes and Robin Williams in remaking a Disney classic, let's not forget that neither of those two guys was above making crap every now and then. And even though Robin Williams provides a great and surprisingly subdued performance here--with LITTLE MERMAID voice actress Jodi Benson providing some game support as his wisecracking AI robot assistant--the script is filled with all the lazy comedic pratfalls that came to embody John Hughes' work in the wake of HOME ALONE's runaway success, with the innocent charm of the original Fred MacMurray movie now replaced with Flubber shaking his green CGI ass in front of the camera and shooting out of Shooter McGavin's asshole.
It just goes to show all you folks who got mad over Will Smith playing the Genie that not even the late great Robin Williams was above starring in a lame Disney remake himself. Perhaps Big Willie wants to eye starring in the inevitable FLUBBER reboot? #GettinJigglyWitIt

This video had me checking my smoke alarms 😂
"It puts the flubber on the skin."
"Would you flub me? I'd flub me."
Or it gets the flub again
What the fuck
Think you mighta flubbed those lines!
I'm a fuckin' GENIUS!
@@devinpaul9026 "Flubbin' genius" get it right or get out of sight!
@@mrbraindead12 Ahh flub allaya!
I remember seeing this as a kid. It's a nice film.
RIP Robin Williams.
I want to watched this film as a kid.
I watched this a bunch of times as a kid. Really opened up my imagination
Change that battery, smoke detectors save lives!
I just noticed that today. I'm a fucking moron. Sorry about that. If it's not one thing, it's another.
Phryxil man!! I thought it was mine!! 🤣😂🤣😂
@@JeonardShadby505 just gentle ribbing- damn good content overall.
Goddamit, me too. And I'd just got back from the battery shop!
@@Phryxil Thanks a lot, dude, I appreciate the compliments. For a while there, I thought you were quoting from the movie, but after the third or so comment about my smoke alarm, I realized it was meant towards me. What can you say, the best thing to do after making a mistake is learning from it.
Flubber was my shit growing up soooo underrated to me idk ppl hated it till i got on the internet..movies like this the 1997 animated Hercules and small soldiers were some underrated movies i loved
You know what would've made Robin William's character more tolorable? What if instead of forgetting his wedding, he was instead trying to propose to his girlfriend for the first time? He bought the wedding rings using his one year sallery, but as he's trying to propose to his girlfriend, he's also trying to find a way to save the college from going bankrupt, so he's sorta juggling those two aspects and trying to get his priorities straight and maybe when he does try to propose, something always seems to cockblock him? Just change the simple act of him attempting to propose to his girlfriend for the first time, and I'm pretty sure it would go over a bit better.
I remember watching it in theaters when I was a child, I know the movie ain't perfect but it's one that I hold near and dear in my heart.
Robin Williams is one of my icons growing up right next to Jim Carrey, this film, Aladdin, Hook, Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire and Jack are my favorite films from this man. Rest in Peace fine sir.
Meh, you like his more commercial stuff. His best films are the likes of Good Morning Vietnam, Dead Poets Society etc.
@@anonb4632 Funny you mentioned Good Morning Vietnam, I happened to watch it at high school years ago and it's really good.
@@tonymata8070 It should be much better remembered than it is. It's one of the better Vietnam films out there and shows off Williams' comedy skills really well.
I saw a Robin Williams film a couple of days ago for the first time - "the Final Cut". The basic idea is interesting enough, and Williams' acting is also good, but it's let down by bad writing and direction. It's a shame, because he could do decent serious roles. His film career could be uneven.
I think I've seen most RW films, except "One Hour Photo" (?) - that concept didn't age well! I even used to watch "Mork and Mindy" back in the eighties as a boy. I think he was very talented but also wasted on the likes of "Flubber" and "Patch Adams". I'm sorry he ended up like he did with all the health problems. I hope he's in a better place.
RIP John Hughes and Robin Williams. Funny video. Watch these films as a kid.
flubber thicc
Honestly, I love the hell out of Flubber. Robin Williams was hilariously awesome in it.
Damn it, now I wanna watch Flubber thank god I have Disney Plus
The Lion King 2019 is bad
Very, very, very bad
This movie came out the same weekend as Alien Resurrection. She wanted to see Flubber and I wanted to see the alien film. So we compromised and went to The Flubber film.
wstine79 wow. Dodged a bullet, eh?
@@otakumartin4085 sure did
I think your partner was right.
My brother and father saw Starship Troopers while my mom and I saw Flubber. I have no regrets.
At least awafully good movies did a better review of flubber than the nostalgia critic has
I was born in 97 this is pure nostalgia
fart noise.
“NUMBNUTS!” is one of the best things ever! Lol
Is that your home alarm that keeps beeping in the audio? Also the film audio is really loud and your audio is really low. :( Good video though I watched it all the way through.
I was like i just replaced my battery. That beep makes this almost unwatchable.
If I wanted a live action remake of The absent minded Professor, I'll take the TV remake with Harry Anderson from Night Court.
Holy Shit. The Kurgan is MR.Krabs? I honestly didn't know that.
Sheepy007 Don’t forget that he did Lex Luthor in Superman the Animated Series.
16:13 What a Surprise, This Dude Flubber Bootybounce Was In This, Nice One, Also Thank For The Rating For This Film, I Wish & Some How There's a Flubber Reboot In Future, Thank You Man, Goodnight & RIP Robin Williams. *Also Nice Touch There With Robin Williams Saying That. **16:35** 🍑🍑🍑🍑🍑💚💚💚💚💚💚💚*
I watched this soo many times when I was younger...I adore this movie
Did you know?
Adam Savage (of Mythbusters game) built the weebo robot prop in the movie

I respectfully disagree with your opinion, my good man. Of course, I admittedly do have a nostalgic soft spot for this movie.
#NotMyWeebo fucking KILLED ME.

When is Disney gonna make that remake of Million Dollar Duck?
Right after they finish production on the COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES TV series for Disney+.
Jesse Shade I’m looking forward more to the remake of Unidentified Flying Oddball
Oh man....well done with that happy Gilmore rhyme tie in. Lol
Generic comment defending the awful movie joblo is reviewing, based on a nostalgic point of view.
New lion king scares the shit out of me. Lions are not cute when they look realistic.
Dont worry the lion king remake was no where nearly as good. It's a waste of time to watch it
Looks terrible....90s comedy trash
Great review as always, Jesse! :-D
Glad to see this series back again and hope to see much more soon. Thanks ;)
Wow, Clancy Brown AND Ted Levine as comic relief henchmen in FLUBBER?
Can you say "Utter Waste of Talent", Boys and Girls...?
9:09 I love how you used a still from Disney's Inspector Gadget for this line (Something that appears to have gone unnoticed), I also hate how I somehow remembered that shot despite that I've not seen that movie in 15-20 years.
I fucken died laughing at that "eating pieces of shit for breakfast" comment!!!!!!!!! That was awesome hahahahahaha
It seems fun as a kid but probably stupid as a adult but those of us who grew up with this movie will cherish it in someway but this was a wonderful disaster of a movie thanks to Robin Williams. Give him any role he will make it work.
I love this freaking movie sooooo muchh!!!! My favorite character was Weebo
I love this guy! He’s hilarious! Make more videos👍🏽
I rember loving this movie as a kid . I never realized it was a remake.
The whole him forgetting his wedding is them trying to go back to the original movie which was called the absent-minded Professor it wasn't called Flubber
Why the hate on Will Smith disney fans? Robin wouldn't have hell he'd think it's awesome to think the badass genie club gets a new member.
this movie is a part of my childhood, it will always be a classic for me :)
i watched this once as a kid on vhs and never watched it again
AirFlubBud Cinematic Universe Phase One confirmed for 2020-2030
With Mahershala Ali in the role of Flubblade. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, I NOW RETIRE FROM COMEDY FOREVER.
how dare you not mention Jodi Benson's greatest vocal achievement. i'm talking, of course, about Rapsittie Street Kids: Believe In Santa
I remember seeing this in theaters with my nana. RW was one of my childhood heroes. Him, Will Smith and Jim Carrey. RIP RW and Nana ❤️

A surprising Hell Boy origin story...
10:17
This isn't "awfully good", in fact it's "bloody awful". I had managed to scrub this rubbish from my memory and then I get reminded of it.
Miss your videos, Jesse. I don't want joblo videos to create a CGI remake of awfully good movies. #Notmyweebo
Not to worry, dude, I'm still gonna be making them for the foreseeable future. If anything, my slower schedule has led to better videos now that I have more time to really perfect them. I should be cracking on my review for August very soon, so stay tuned!
@@JeonardShadby505 awesome.

I need flying rubber.

The one element that got overlooked is Weebo manipulating the Professor by only mentioning the wedding while he's distracted and otherwise assisting with the Flubber experiment even though the Professor had set her as the reminder for the wedding.
I do really liked this movie maybe because I still see with the same kid eyes as back in the day but it's Robin Williams and it's quite funny and as I a kid I do really felt sad when the little robot died, idk love, death and robots always get me
Jonique'a Smith:Hey isn't that the horn sound from the mask movie?🤔
14:10-11 Lol. Rope a doping. Nice term 4 it, but in this case the punches did have great effect! Since I was a kid that's always been my favorite part when she boxes the hel outta his face! But y'know I've always wondered how they got her to punch him so quick like that. Everyone always tells me special effects but I wanna know what kind of effects they were. I've been searching the internet for that footage 4 as long as I can remember and could never find it! 😥😥😥😥😭😭😭😭😭😭
#Notmyweebo God I love yalls videos!!
And we love our viewers! Much appreciated, dude!
@@JeonardShadby505
You're awesome.
Love these videos.
Fun fact: Keenan Wynn's Alonzo Hawk is the only Disney live action bad guy to appear twice. The Absent Minded Professor and Herbie Rides Again.
The only thing good about the CGI lion king was James Earl Jones returning as Mufasa
Here's a better drinking game - take a shot everytime you hear the smoke detector beep in the background.
I'm old enough now that I can admit I cried a little bit when Weebo died
They predicted the future with robins scooter and memes
Your gonna get a 1000 9 volt battery if you have a po box
This is probably one of the movies ever made
I remember this from Middle School, I can’t what which was worst, Middle School Cuz we had to watch crap like this along with Haunted Mansion (1997) or High School cuz of them annoying kids
i like this movie
flubber is a fun movie
home alone copied the concept
How?
Home Alone came out seven years before Flubber.
Change the fire alarm battery its annoying
I subscribed to this channel just for awfully good movies.
Thanks for the subscription, brother!
I doubt that is was a championship game

LMAO! Good one.
Such a funny video 👍🏽👍🏽
Amazing!!
7:51 Sinestro and Lex Luthor?
2:18 Mark? Did this commenter kid get the Tommy Wiseau case of mistaking other male M names for Mark?
There are nudity in this film
I first saw this as repeated commercials on Disney VHS-released in the 90s. I recall thinking the movie was exciting. Then the toys from McDonalds came out and I had a blast with those. When I actually saw the movie, I was disappointed! xD
Usually I'm against the whole nostalgic remake reboot prequel bullshit, but I gotta say: Buffalo Bill & The Kurgan could be fucking awesome!!
I only saw this movie when I was a kid, but... CAPTAIN STOTTLEMEYER AND MR. KRABS WERE IN THIS TOGETHER AND I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE?!?!
That little mermaid joke was cancer. I cringed and turned off the video for 2 days.
Then, you probably shouldn't even have a UA-cam if that was this video that made you turn it off. 🤦
Answer to your question about the flip.
In 1984, Rudd and Dale Earnhardt swapped rides, with Rudd moving over to the No. 15 Ford for Bud Moore. Rudd was involved in a horrific crash in the Busch Clash at Daytona, in which his car went airborne (in a crash that Ned Jarrett described as something like a "bucking horse") before suffering a concussion and a torn cartilage in his rib cage. His eyes were swollen so badly he taped his eyes open to be able to race in the Daytona 500, as well as a flak jacket for his rib injury. After learning of this long after the fact, NASCAR instituted the policy of examining all drivers involved in wrecks to ensure that they will be able to race safely the next week
On of the few movies in my life that I haven't finished watching. Me and my then partner watched until flubber appeared, where it went all wacky and tacky.
Lol Did the name Flubber not imply wacky and tacky??
@@TakodaRA8
No. Not really.
AlienBoy13 Ok alienboy. Well most certainly those things that show you parts of the movie of what the main objective is to get you interested to watch it for sure did. I forget what they’re called though.
6:00 who knew he could fly
02:15 It's me! Holy shit!
FLUBBER has better pacing than THE ABSENT-MINDED PROFESSOR, and the speed-up effects are kept to a minimum, allowing the viewer to enjoy the slapstick more. Both movies are comedies, but this one also has a lot of emotional moments. Neither approach is necessarily better or worse than the other, but it's enough to justify the remake's existance. However, there's a downside to this. You see, the original got away with how the protagonist kept forgetting his own wedding, because the wacky tone prevented us from taking the story seriously. Since this one has a more emotional tone, it's harder to root for them. Why does she put up with him?
[Spoilers ahead]
At the end, they finally get married... through a video call. If this was an option, why didn't anyone suggested it before? Why is she OK with this, if she wanted a normal wedding (are they even legally married despite not being in the same place)? If she didn't, why didn't she or anyone else suggest something like this before? Why didn't anyone suggest having the wedding at his house? I can't believe that this movie has such a dumb ending while the farcical original does show him attending the wedding, showing real growth. In fact, there's a moment where he justifies this behavior as "I'm absent-minded because I'm love," which is bullshit. Despite these issues with the character, Robin Williams' performance is likeable enough (by the way, so was Fred MacMurray's, despite being less over-the-top). You'd think that changing the title to the invention's name would mean more protagonism for it, but it doesn't happen. Dammit! SON OF FLUBBER was also a deceiving title, but at least the adversiting wasn't. Here? Watch the trailer. Hell, just look at the poster. And yeah, it's a living being now, but it's still only seen in very few scenes. By comparison, more time is dedicated to WEEBO, a robot assistant who's in love with BRAINARD. Aside from having an arguably cooler design, she has a complete story arc, culminating in a pre-recorded message that almost made me cry. Why isn't the movie titled after her?! If BRAINARD is such a genius, why does he touch FLUBBER without gloves the first time he sees it? Speaking of this scene, he puts it on his face to see if his shape will change. Technically, he kissed it, right?
5/10
Holy glob, the movie clip volume is super loud compared to the rest. - I got half way, can't do it =(
What about the 1988 movie absent-minded professor I remember that movie back in the day and I thought it was a great
the guy who plays Bennet Hoenicker in flubber looks like young Shane Mcmahon lol
Did you notice, the design of the flying robot is strikingly similar to those in "The Black Hole"?
