Just discovered you Matthew. I love your enthusiasm and candid takes on the shows --- and that they don't last 25 to 35 minutes! I subscribed and I'll be watching all your reviews.
You must have appeased the algorithm gods because here I am! I get to NY once a year to binge on shows and am so happy I found your channel. Great review. Keep the bow tie and vest, you look totally Broadway.
Matthew, I can't begin to tell you how amazingly overwhelmed I am by your review of this show. I saw the first incarnation of this show back in the fall at the Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ and I was blown away by it, so much so, that I wasn't at all surprised when I heard that it was going to be moved to Broadway. I'm writing this now 'after' the official opening night and I was so distressed by the "mixed" (I'm being kind) reviews of all the theatre "critics!" I'm struggling to understand what the disconnect was between the show I experienced and the show they experienced. To that end, "Thank you" for your review . . . and if my grandmother was still alive, I'd take your advice to make sure she would see this show while visiting me here in NYC!
Hey! Thanks for the comment. I think the issue is that the critics were comparing the show to the novel and how they thought it should be adapted. I just went in and took it at face value and I loved it.
I saw this show at Papermill and was blown away. I just got back from seeing it on Broadway and was so let down. The changes they made weren't for the better. I will say Eva wasn't there that night and that definitely added to the disappointment. Songs were changed and there was just something off. I too couldn't believe they didn't get more Tony nods, but after watching the Broadway version, kinda understood. Would I suggest it to others. Of course, any time you have the chance to see Jeremy Jordan, take it! He was flawless as always.
@@sarahpalazzo1504 I really curious about the changes. Are there any big changes that you were particularly disappointed by? Which changed songs did you prefer in the Papermill production. This show is headed to Korea so I'm sure there will be more changes as they prepare the international premiere.
This is exactly my take after seeing it at Papermill and on Broadway. Absolutely my favorite. The show has everything you hope to see in a Broadway production. Can't understand the critic's response either. I am glad that it is doing well in ticket sales/earnings, despite all of the negativity. I feel honored to call this a winner from the very beginning.
Also here probably based on algorithm, but I saw the show last night and thought it was phenomenal. Eva wasnt performing due to fatigue and illness, but fabulous nonetheless. The critics approaches are unfortunaye because I, too, think they were robbed with the nominations. 😢
I read it back in junior high school so I'd forgotten most of it. I think this is why I was able to enjoy the show without comparing it to an expectation of what the story should be. I'm excited to see the other version of Gatsby that is scheduled to open in the 2025 season.
You can see it in late previews after the show is frozen. That’s when the critics and the Tony selectors see it, especially since Gatsby opened on the last day of elegibility. I didn’t get the jazz age vibe at all. The score didn’t help set the period at all. This show was meh. Agree the dancing was very good, and may get a Tony nomination. The sets were expensive and the performers were talented, but nothing made me invest in the characters.
Probably because I base my reviews on two simple criteria. I don't go into whether the show is faithful to the source material like so many other reviewers did. I'm just here to be entertained! And I was thoroughly entertained by this show.
@@MatthewHardyMusical Glad you were entertained. It's still bottom of the list of new musicals from last season that I want to see. But thanks for your review.
@@MatthewHardyMusical Yeah, that's about when I would see it. I'm a meber of TDF so if it pops up there then I might go. Still waiting for SUFFS to come back up. I need to take my boss and my stepmom. They will love it.
I don't care if it didn't get many Tony nominees. I loved this show so much.
I think it will be fine. Word of mouth will sell tickets.

Loved the review ....loved the show....disappointed in the Tony's...hopefully will continue to slay at the box office.
I'm so glad you liked/LOVED the show overall.
I seem to be in the minority. Probably because I didn't compare it against the book.

Thanks! I don't know if I can sport the bowtie every day. I got into theater so I wouldn't have to wear a tie every day. 🙂

Yay!! So glad bored and confused is the show name and not your review LOL. I bought tickets for next week and doing my research!!
That's just to get your attention! LOL. Let me know what you think of the show!
@@MatthewHardyMusical hahaha it definitely did get my attention!

Glad the algorithm brought you by! Just saw the weekly grosses and Great Gatsby is in the top ten so that's a good sign.
The songs at Papermill were not interrupted like that. That was one of the things I dis not like. Just sing the song and let me enjoy it!
Amen Sister!

Daisy's Rose song didn't charm you?
I hated Daisy's Rose song.
@@sarahpalazzo1504 REALLY! I was charmed by it. It was one of the few songs that had some wit.
Wow, this is the first good review that I heard. I heard this show is awful.

I agree as I also read the novel in HS and I saw the movie and I still saw the show twice
