    .308 Win is a very accurate cartridge and it is arguably the parent cartridge of the 6.5CM. We all know that another rifle of the exact same model might shoot quite differently with the same ammo. I don't think it's fair to assume that one cartridge is more accurate than another... but it's fair to assume that the shooter may be more accurate with one cartridge based on recoil sensitivity or just plain bias.

    • @Gunner70-fe8ji
      @Gunner70-fe8ji 18 днів тому +1

      I agree, except the part about the 308 being the parent cartridge of the 6.5 CM, that is absolutely false!

    • @CplSkiUSMC
      @CplSkiUSMC 18 днів тому

      @@Gunner70-fe8ji That's why I threw in the "arguably" part. Although the 6.5CM was developed by Hornady from the ground up, the ground was the .471 base of the .308 Win... which of course is the 30.06 in a short action. To avoid a hundred different bolt face diameters, most new cartridges are designed with that idea in mind. We tend to refer to parent cases as those which were necked up or down from that parent cartridge to create a different caliber from it. That is not the case with the .308/6.5 because they are not the same length, but they do share the same bottom half. It's a pretty loose allegation to say that the .308 is big daddy to the 6.5CM but head stamp aside, you need to turn them face up to tell which is which.

    A .006" difference of your best groups between two calibers in my opinion isn't definitive proof that the 6.5 is superior to the .308. A .006" spread could be the difference you'd see day to day, or you could just call it favoritism or recoil sensitivity. But I call it click bait.

    • @EpikArms
      @EpikArms  4 місяці тому +1

      Hey Robo Dabo, yeah forbthe best group it's not particularly indicative. But for the groups in general you have a better chance of finding a compatible ammo with the 6.5 than the .308.
      From the perspective of a shooter who buys a new gun would you rather have to buy 10 different boxes to find one that shoots 0.5" or would you preffer build 5? That's more what I'm saying.

      @@EpikArmsto be fair I have 2 tikkas, one 6.5 and 1 308. My 6.5 has an edge with handloads but the 308 ate all the factory I fed it and was about 3/4 moa with everything and no point of impact shift from 150gr to 180gr in 8 different loads. The 6.5 stomps the 308 past 800m tho. Long story short, buy a tikka.

New American gen ll bolt gun looks good enough to buy, not rich so had to sell my GP-100 to upgrade to a 44 mag S&W model 629. 😢

    I have tracked more deer shot with a 6.5 than a .308 for farther distances. Not sure why, may be the confidence that some noobies have with the hyped up capabilities of the 6.5, and their shooting capabilities, or something other? Will stick with the 308 all day, larger bullet face anyway.

    I do believe the 6.5 creedmoor with its tighter chamber design is more accurate overall. I don't think there is much question at this point. But I wish we would get to the point where rifle reviews would do more extended tests that were statistically significant. Just because you got a single sub moa group from a particular load is completely meaningless. The next group could be 2" for all we know. You really need 7-10 3 shot groups before you have enough data to know for sure. Each shot will end up randomly anywhere within the "cone of fire".

    • @UltimateArms
      @UltimateArms 4 місяці тому

      7 to 10 3 shot group sounds good but you do know what the price of 6.5 creedmoor and other ammo is right now ? when your doing 8 to 10 different types of ammo. do the math. your talking 30 rounds per brand. at 6 to 10 differnet brands. 300 rounds. @ say 60 dollars a box of 20. i know i cant afford that !

    The 6.5CM is not the end all / be all of hunting, shooting or accuracy. Neither is the 308, so finding the ammo that matches the gun is vitally important. The judging of 6.5CM would have been better done against the 7mm08, since they bullet weights and caliber match much more closely. Set the triggers (if adjustable) to similar poundage. In this test you will find the better BC of 6.5GM bullets helps in the long range testing (300-500m) and the 7mm08 will win the energy competition in the short range. Then there is always the variance between guns due to manufacturing tolerances. Maybe you should buy 3 guns in each caliber and cross compare them to see which ones win the consistence competition... I don't have the money to do that, but I'm sure the mfgs would love you for it... 😂 I still shoot a 243 and a 25.06 for my hunting, but I do limit my distance to 400m or less, and I prefer much less... like I don't think I've had to shoot a deer over 125yds living in MT and now in PA...

    That Winchester ammo proves why 3 shot groups are not proper accuracy testing. The 4th shot basically doubles the group size. If I shot 3 shot groups on most of my rifles with good ammo/hand loads I could get .50 moa on a consistent basis.

    • @EpikArms
      @EpikArms  4 місяці тому

      Hey Bmstyle, yes thats quite true. And a 3 shot group or even a 2 shot group can easily shot a incompatible ammo with a rifle. Although going for more than 3 can lead to barrel warming up and groups opening up. It's a bit of a catch 22

    Regarding the accuracy differences between the 308 and 6.5 CM, no offense but those groups suck, especially when those two calibers are known for long range accuracy! I have the Ruger Gen II in 350 Legend, which is strictly a deer and hog gun effective to 200yds max, but mine is topped with a Leupold Vx-Freedom 2-7X33 scope with Warne rings. Shooting at 100yds using Winchester copper impact 150gr will produce a 4 shot group that can be covered with a nickel, and the Hornady Black 150 gr and Winchester white box 145 gr (target round) groups are only slightly larger. Both the 308 and 6.5 CM are way more flatter shooting cartridges than the 350 legend and at more than twice the distance. My point being, is you need to send those rifles back to Ruger, either that or you have something going on with the scope you are using.
