1:44:29 my favourite melodie. She sings it so incredibly clean. OMG. Many thanks to all ho participated on the production of this concert. Actually it is my favourite opera. This is the best recording you find on UA-cam for this opera. Many thanks and best regards!!!
We saw this live shortly after its premiere. The conceit of Faust being in a state of despair; the devil not having the slightest fear of the Cross; the devil''s walking on a crucifix - all led to about 90% of the audience being thrilled and 10% horrified. It is a gripping reinterpretation of a great story, well performed by all. Alan Altinoglu is a true leader and excellent interpreter of Gounod's superb score.
The devil would never walk on a crucifix and he DOES have fear of the cross. If the audience was thrilled with the lies otherwise, probably 90% of the audience are going to hell. Ten percent to Heaven. But that would hold with what the Bible tells us about the evil of mankind.
Thanks for uploading this version. At the end, clever staging when Inva mimes pulling the petals off the marguerite. I'm still impressed by the word choice at 1:40:00 "daughter of a king" (and the ambiguous reference to the king of the underworld, Mephisto) rather than "princess." Fantastic irony.
What a wonderful performance! Staged spectacularly.I was moved by poor Marguerite's tragic destiny. I think the whole story has a very sad message, that is it is the pure and the innocent who always fall victims to the others .Anyway, this opera rendition was fully worth watching.I recommend it.❤😊
This production is truly exciting. The performance shortcoming is the Marguerite of Inva Mula. Even so, it's impossible not to be seduced by Gounod's enduring entertainment. So much famous music. That's opera, Doc. The overhead camera certainly adds to the thrills for the video viewing audience.

Musically speaking, this version of FAUST is superb, with Gounod's score brilliantly rendered by the topnotch cast headed by Roberto Alagna. Visually, though, the production leaves a great deal to be desired.

She sings an aria at her spinning wheel (Il ne revient pas). Siébel stands by her. The scene shifts to the square outside Marguerite's house. Valentin's company returns from the war to a military march (Deposons les armes and Gloire immortelle de nos aïeux, the well-known "soldiers' chorus"). Siébel asks Valentin to forgive Marguerite. Valentin rushes to her cottage. While he is inside Faust and Méphistophélès appear, and Méphistophélès, thinking that only Marguerite is there, sings a mocking burlesque of a lover's serenade under Marguerite's window (Vous qui faites l'endormie). Valentin comes out of the cottage, now knowing that Faust has debauched his sister. The three men fight, Méphistophélès blocking Valentin's sword, allowing Faust to make the fatal thrust. With his dying breath Valentin blames Marguerite for his death and condemns her to Hell before the assembled townspeople (Ecoute-moi bien Marguerite). Marguerite goes to the church and tries to pray there but is stopped, first by Méphistophélès and then by a choir of devils. She finishes her prayer but faints when she is cursed again by Méphistophélès. Act 5[edit] The Harz mountains on Walpurgis Night / A cavern / The interior of a prison Méphistophélès and Faust are surrounded by witches (Un, deux et trois). Faust is transported to a cave of queens and courtesans, and Méphistophélès promises to provide Faust with the love of the greatest and most beautiful women in history. An orgiastic ballet suggests the revelry that continues throughout the night. As dawn approaches, Faust sees a vision of Marguerite and calls for her. Méphistophélès helps Faust enter the prison where Marguerite is being held for killing her child. They sing a love duet (Oui, c'est toi que j'aime). Méphistophélès states that only a mortal hand can deliver Marguerite from her fate, and Faust offers to rescue her from the hangman, but she prefers to trust her fate to God and His angels (Anges purs, anges radieux). At the end she asks why Faust's hands are covered in blood, pushes him away, and falls down motionless. Méphistophélès curses, as a voice on high sings "Sauvée!" ("Saved!"). The bells of Easter sound and a chorus of angels sings "Christ est ressuscité!" ('"Christ is risen!"). The walls of the prison open, and Marguerite's soul rises to heaven. In despair Faust follows it with his eyes; he falls to his knees and prays. Méphistophélès is turned away by the shining sword of the archangel

¡Maravilloso, maravilloso PLAY-BACK!
There are hits and misses. Unfortunately the audio quality makes it hard to judge - I suspect the singing may have been better than it sounds here. The staging I am unsure about, but the ending is misplaced - too macabre for a start. Must admit I prefer the ROH production with Terfel. It looks traditional but has surprises, particularly in the ballet.
Good to see an old Faust at the beginning changing to young, but not at the end? What happened to the Walpurgis Nacht ballet?? Completely cut out, wasted opportunity to add to the macabre undertones of the opera. Budapest Opera (2015) was the best interpretation I have seen so far in many years, simply outstanding and will be never forgotten,,,
Clever staging and visual effects, but the muffled audio pickup sounds like an old transistor radio. These singers are better than they sound in this video.
My case is similar, I'm watching it because it's mentioned in Master and Margarita. The second I finish watching Eugene Onegin, the book drops the next opera reference on me and it's back to YT!
A great musical performance. Inva Mula is simply magnificent. Roberto Alagna is also great but gives, sometimes, the impression that he has sung the part too many times. Gay is good in a role that has been sung by gods and demi gods in the past. Christoyannis, my fellow Greek, is also of a high caliber. The stage direction, set and costumes, have their happy moments but often seem unconvincing or at odds with the music. The closing scene instead of divine seems macabre. The TV filming has too many close-ups. This is an opera and things should never be so close and so well lit.
Hari Politopoulos Your comments and observations are excellent. The ending is very macabre. Watch it without sound...the staging should still convey a meaning. This is merely gruesome.
Hello Everyone! It is a terrible and horroristice verison of the opera. The final scene is horrible. Originally Marguerite's soul rises to heaven and choir of angels appears and sings at final scene. But in this version Margit is beheaded and finally her head is placed in display casa by black soldiers . It is totally incomprehensible. The director has created an ambiguous, horror opera instead of a transcendent opera. I don't know what is the director's problem with soul rises to heaven! I don't know why there was nobody to tell the director that this version is terrible and need to change it!
If you understand the will of the director, the head of Maggy is put in a reliquary, so it means that , for the believers , she's forgiven and sanctified. But , for the no-believer, it shows the distance we need to look at those stories of God, Mephisto , angels and devils, ... But the scene I prefer is the "malediction" from the brother . It shows how the society is living this religion of Love . ( just "bourgeoisie" and hypocrisy)
34:00 Kuplety Mefista. - is there a version by Boris Gmyria?Aria: Złoty Cielec. Faust. Gunod 1.)
Just once..l would love to see the original version produced as it was originally written of Faust. Just once with no spins on it. 😢. The end of this was horrible..
What is the name of the actor of "old" Faust? I know that Roberto Alagna is young Faust, but I can't find a credit for the tenor at the beginning of the opera...
One is unable to hear the music or get involved in the drama when the most attention grabbing thing is "how is she pulling that ..." or "why do those hand cuffs seem so loose" and "will she pull all the petals off by the end of the song?" etc. How about having the characters feelings and the plot itself grab people?
Whisky (or Champagne), cigarettes and naked women are the most frequent "innovations" we see today by "innovative" directors. Here there are all . Mise en scene ridicule

FAUST is one of the greatest operas ever written!
Bored and seeking entertainment I typed "full opera" into UA-cam and was supremely rewarded! What I would have given to see this production!
I did - and it was one of the greatest operatic experiences in my life.

Faust, an aging scholar, determines that his studies have come to nothing and have only caused him to miss out on life and love (Rien! En vain j'interroge). Act 2[edit]
At the city gates
A chorus of students, soldiers and villagers sing a drinking song (Vin ou Bière). Valentin, leaving for war with his friend Wagner, entrusts the care of his sister Marguerite to his youthful friend Siébel (O sainte médaille ... Avant de quitter ces lieux). Méphistophélès appears, provides the crowd with wine, and sings a rousing, irreverent song about the Golden Calf (Le veau d'or). Act 3[edit]

Marguerite's garden
The lovesick boy Siébel leaves a bouquet for Marguerite (Faites-lui mes aveux). Faust sends Méphistophélès in search of a gift for Marguerite and sings a cavatina (Salut, demeure chaste et pure) idealizing Marguerite as a pure child of nature. Méphistophélès brings in a decorated box containing exquisite jewelry and a hand mirror and leaves it on Marguerite's doorstep, next to Siébel's flowers. Marguerite enters, pondering her encounter with Faust at the city gates, and sings a melancholy ballad about the King of Thule (Il était un roi de Thulé). Marthe, Marguerite's neighbour, notices the jewellery and says it must be from an admirer. Marguerite tries on the jewels and is captivated by how they enhance her beauty, as she sings in the famous aria, the Jewel Song (Ah! je ris de me voir si belle en ce miroir).
Act 5[edit]
The Harz mountains on Walpurgis Night / A cavern / The interior of a prison
Méphistophélès and Faust are surrounded by witches (Un, deux et trois).
Exquisitely gorgeous performance with miraculously beautiful dramatization! Heartfelt admiration and respect to all🌹

OH MY GOSH ONE WHERE THEY ACTUALLY INCLUDE THE WALPURGISNACHT SCENE!
Stupenda opera belle voci .
maravillosa voz del actor que interpreta mefistofeles
no son actores cariño, son cantantes.

I'm watching Faust for the sake of Agatha Christie's mention of it in her book "the murder of Roger Ackroyd" page 106😊. Am I the only one? Probably
F A I T H I think so
My case is similar, I'm watching it because it's mentioned in Master and Margarita. The second I finish watching Eugene Onegin, the book drops the next opera reference on me and it's back to YT!
Marvelous.
Briilliant all round production Thanks When's d v d coming out '
Bravo!
Dmitri Hvorowstowski was the best singer in this opera no one can beat him.
Magnific!

This is an opera and things should never be so close and so well lit.
exactly: unconvincing and at odds with the music
Hari Politopoulos Your comments and observations are excellent. The ending is very macabre. Watch it without sound...the staging should still convey a meaning. This is merely gruesome.
As we see here, meeting Satan is so easy. Just be annoyed, stop being patient, and, behold, Satan is here.
French musical masterpiece after German’s literary genius.
An interesting and illuminating performance. Am I correct that Alagna did the singing in the first scene with the aged Faust?
Is this version for sale anywhere? I would love to have this opera especially with English subtitles.

Alagna molto bravo
🤣
Inva Mula is my favorite Marguerite!
some people's comments seem to be confusing the devil with a vampire
Sublime, soberbia, magnífica...

When Faust meets Salomé.
iva mula is a good singer but her vibratto sounds so big, it takes away the youth of the character
She has huge knödel and puts the voice in the nose. Not beautiful at all IMO

@@robertlambeaux897 If the director wanted such an ending, he should write his own opera.

I love Mephistópheles, whats his name? Somebody knows?
Fátima Osuna Conejo Blanco It’s written in the description. Paul Gay
Am I the only one loosing my mind because Mephisto kissed Siébel????
Whisky (or Champagne), cigarettes and naked women are the most frequent "innovations" we see today by "innovative" directors. Here there are all .
