This video is about Hunter: the Reckoning, a somewhat unusual but fitting entry into the World of Darkness, how it has been reimagined in Fifth Edition, and where it's roots in the lore (AKA The Imbued) lie.

Bro is trying as hard as he can to avoid werewolf
He ain't a goddamn furry and also werewolf is nihilistic territory
it's a meme in the community now
Pretty sure he's just waiting for the new one to come out at the end of the year, just like he waited for this one
Brother, he is not even trying to avoid. It's just he's balls of absolute steel cannot get furry enough for him to even begin to think about werewolfs
He would do demon 25a in 2027 before werewolf
Love the Hunter: the Parenting reference lmao I got a cackle out of “surprisingly athletic and DEEPLY insane grandpa”

"You can't be Houdini! I *KILLED* HOUDINI!"
@@itwasidio1736has anyone checked if Houdini was a monster in the lore?
yeah, he was a vampire. tremere, unsurprisingly
The other day, an acquaintance was talking about his hunter character. His origin was his wife was turned into a kindred, clan malkavian, who diablerized her Sire, and her sire's sire, then walked up to him one night at told him, "I have become a vampire, there are more out there, i am losing my mind, in one and a half years, i will loose all of myself. I want you to kill me before that happens. I want to let you, but there is something in me that won't let me let you. Please love." His campaign group made his story a priority because it was more interesting than everyone else's.
The story teller drew this out for about a year, and she did a good job. A little too good of a job. When the final session wrapped, more than half the players were openly weeping, and they all said they needed a break. They were going to pick up again in mid 2020.
Their Storyteller didn't make it. I hope they didn't give up on the game, and are out there playing in her honor.
Jesus
Wait, the storyteller died of covid?
@@generalgrievous2202 I can only assume. I was just told she died in 2020. My acquaintance didn't have the details and we were both kinda drunk at the time, so i just gave him a bro hug and didn't ask further.
I honestly don't remember why i told this story here.
Oh my god, my heart is hurting me after reading that. I also hope they continue in her honor.
That's the kind of HtR games I like, but hell... I'm so sorry for her and for their loss.

I'd love to see Bürger make a cameo in HtP.
Big-D: Underground Creed
Door: Martial Creed
Markus: Inquisitive Creed
Kitten: Entrepreneurial Creed
Nah, Big-D is definitely an imbued, and by his actions with Kevin, probably a redeemer or judge
I would probably switch Kitten and Markus creed but overall I totally agree
Thank you I was looking for this comment
@@speedlarcool132 yeah, considering that Kitten always does the exposition.
But Markus was also part of the Arcanum before getting kicked out.

Mr Piccolo: "DODGE!".
Our GM decided to have me and my mate play Hunters as a sort of foil to other two Vampire players. We were supposed to act like NPCs, but ended up pretty much stealing the whole show. We used sunlight/daytime and phosphor shells to our advantage, we blew up their sportscar, torched their rooftop helicopter villa, the only cooler thing than us filling up a car tire with fuel, lighting and rolling it into the Vamps, was one of us randomly catching lycantropy and the other having a holy handcannon 😂
you guys had cash to burn
Not sure how you'd catch Lycanthropy, you can only be born a werewolf in WoD because it's an ability (not a curse) transferred solely through lineage. I mean you could try a ritual of rebirth or something, but then you have to be a mage, where you literally die (as in your avatar is destroyed) and are reborn a shapeshifter.
Unless it was homebrew of course, but the reason werewolves are pretty rare in WoD is that they can only spread through breeding.
@@KairoStark
Musk and Zuckerberg, Vampire Hunters!
@AveSicarius I have no idea as to the canonicity of any of that. We were total newcomers to WoD. The GM said he was very familiar with the setting, and that he would guide us. We Hunter players went along with it and played upon stereotypes we knew to mess with Vamps. I think I remember the lycantropy was caught through a blood transfusion or something. We really didn't care as much we had fun wrecking the Vampires 😆
@@NIL0S
Yeah it's probably homebrew, and honestly so long as you have fun it obviously doesn't matter about canon. Just pointing out that in the current lore you cannot actually catch Lycanthropy, you have to be born with it. It's more like a spiritual state than anything, not a disease, and you sort of have to be blessed with some of Gaia's juice to gain those power's.
Now I hope we will get Changeling: the Dreaming or Deamon: the Fallen next
Dont forget mummy and kindred of the east.
Thats 4 whole games before werewolf.
Tho i feel changling will be last because he is explicitly moving out from vampire, and changling didnt play nice with ANY of the other settings.
The problem with Mummy is there are a lot of Shifters involved... which would actually make it funnier, because 'why does he have a crocodile head? Reasons, I'll tell you later, honest'
Hell, he could jump into Chornicals and put Demons right next to Unchained, compare and contrast that madness.

Hunter: The PARENTING BABY! DONE BIGLY
What if you had a militant hunter who was less about personal fighting prowess and more about strategy and team management? A captain from the Vietnam War who came home with a medical discharge to a vampire living in his home with his wife who is now a ghoul. The vampire lunges at him, so he pulls out the pistol he'd kept from his service and puts a round under the monster's chin. To his horror, this only stuns the seemingly normal man, and he takes the opportunity to flee. He returns at the crack of dawn the next day to burn the house down before leaving his old life behind for good, realizing his war is far from over
Awesome
*Paranoid starts to play*
One wild ass theory about the imbued, back when the original plan for Exalted was to be the pre-history of the WOD, was that they were given their power by whatever remnant there was of the Unconquered Sun.
Well the symbols at the end of the 1st edition book was kinda a giveaway for that.
Yay my favorite game line where you can show that you AS A COMMON HUMAN BEING CAN BE JUST AS BADASS AND MUCH OF A MONSTER AS THE LITERAL MONSTERS!
Be a shame if those common humans weren't so common, and were, I dunno... imbued with dome kind of power.
@@paulchaisson8301 Indeed, such a shame...for the monsters!
It's a shame the abandonment of the Imbued
@@appleseed8282 Yes it is.
@@appleseed8282 I don't know about that. If I'm gonna play as a human hunting monsters, I want to play as a HUMAN, not a superhero.
The ghostbusters were the original entrepreneurial hunters
Reminds me in a certain way of the Call of Cthulhu RPG, where you play as a normal person exposed to the greater supernatural world and having to research and investigate what is going on, and combat is de-emphasized.
Kinda sounds like delta green?
You missed going insane from said research...
1:16:00 Kinfolk hunters are the BEST. You have an excuse to justify connections to the supernatural communities or knowledge that gets you started, you've got a compelling troublesome family dynamic, you can learn rites (only up to level 2, but still, that's enough to summon and bind spirits), you've got all the culture and history that comes with being a blood member of the garou nation, you've got a super cool thing to spend XP or boons on (gifts and rites), and if you want to play on the dark side...you could always try for the Rite of Sacred Rebirth. That could be a campaign in and of itself. Then your hunter cadre has a full blown goddamn werewolf on their side.
I'm actually playing a kinfolk hunter in the Hunter game that I'm in. It's been an interesting ride.
What are we thinking he’ll do next to avoid Werewolf? I’m betting Changeling.
It’ll be hilarious if he makes Mummy: The Resurrection before Werewolf
@@marcostavares3859and then he'll do Exalted
I bet Demons... And the book of nod 😅
You got it right!
“Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss. The abyss gazes also into you.”

Whenever some one wants to get into a deep dive of the World of Darkness setting I always send them your way. Love each and every presentation on the setting you do. Keep it up!
Honestly, H5 is pretty good (save for... Unfortunate lore and confusing mechanics at times). I just wish we also got Reckoning 5. Because these two games have vastly different themes at play.
H5 is closer to vigil, where small cells of hunters (often employed by large, true organisations) stalk the night in the wake of mayhem and spring the trap that a vampire breaks its fangs on.
But Reckoning, while it had that aspect too no doubt, in theme was so much closer so being *The Reckoning* of monster kind. Divinely inspired by *something* that finally decided to draw the line at what the beasts of night could get up to, displaying this limit to chosen mortals in great, maddening visions. It was a bikergang sharing one last drink before venturing into a firey horizon to fight with the might of angels against the worst of the worst.
They are very different. Both good. But id wished the Imbued got something of themselves.
Not to say that Reckoning didnt have its flaws that H5 fixed. The fact Imbued culture seemed so over developed for only really being around for 3 years when the book came out was strange, and the focus on equipment fits the new theme. Buuut i also think that the shock of being dropped into a fog, only being able to discern others dropped in and using the internet and physical visions as beacons to establish said minor Imbued culture was lost, which is really sad to me.
But yeah, thats me. H5 is still fun
It's nice that you gave larger organizations hunting for supernatural beings in the world of darkness. And it's nice on the heart that the weaker gives back punches.
I don't think I'll play this game anytime soon, nor did I watch Supernatural. BUT I'm interested in it so I can get inspiration for the Hunter antagonists in my Vampire game.
Still, the fantasy of a Hunter is really cool, they add a lot of spice to the World of Darkness lore and I imagine it would be cool to play as one.
There's all kinds of options.
A group of mercenaries try to hunt down a vampire to bring back to a billionaire ghoul addicted to blood is a solid choice.
A single huntercan wipe out your average edgy coterie... easily.
@@Howl-Runner that was kinda the vibe of my main antagonist. He alternated between "friendly FBI guy with a weird holy-like vibe who pretended to not know the characters were vampires" and "masked vampire-killer that would chase and even an elder to the bowels of the earth and make him cower in fear and absolutely knew they were vampires since he first saw them."
I had plans for him to be manipulating the crew the whole time so they could weaken the elders and unknowingly give him a perfect chance to get rid of most of them, but unfortunately the game got cancelled before I could realize the full potential of that guy. At least he scared the hell outta everyone in the group, like... his first appearance was him burning with ease a Nosferatu antagonist that up until that point was simply wiping the floor with them in a relentless chase. They were running for their lives until the hunter arrived, set the big bad aflame only to then turn to them and pretend he was gonna chase them as well, making them go back to running for their lives.
I love Hunter! Hunter The Reckoning: Wayward on PS2 was my introduction to WoD! I love the concept of Hunters, its so slept on! Thank you for covering it!
Oh my god, reverse Shapeshifter seems like worse to deal with than an actual shapeshifter.
13:25 now you made me want a movie like dog soldiers but with this idea lol
That would be ptsd inducing for any character also dead snow and evil dead would work to so would the mummy now I think about it. Silent hill to. Dang you now I need to find a game 😅
I kinda liked the imbued hunters, the paradox of wondering if you are really any different then what your hunting. The fact that the stronger you got the less human you really were and even then you never were on equal footing with the "enemy".
To me, the Imbued were the best part, and that's one of the reasons.
If The Vigil isnt about the Imbued anymore, does that mean you can be on a team with a mage without generating way to much paradox now?
I don't think so. Your storyteller might have a different ruling, but smucks who know mages exist but don't understand how true magic functions(just believe it so? What is this Sunday service?) probably generate paradox too, though arguably less.
I've NEVER heard 'Hunter' Explained NEARLY as well.
I don't *hate* H5, but it does bug me that the imbued are barely mentioned if at all, to the point where I had to explain the entirety of what the reckoning was to a friend who started off only reading H5. It trying to be so close to HtV does just make me ask though, why not just play Vigil?
Something I remember reading out of reckoning is that 95% of hunters weren't imbued, and this game was about the last 5%. I can see why you'd start with Hunters Hunted 5 and put the exceptions in a supplement.
@@nicholascarter9158 that'd be cool if they do, I'm just rubbed the wrong way that it feels like they basically threw out everything there was before. And that it feels like the metaplot event that the game shares a name with has nothing to do with this game anymore
On the subject of the Orgs and how Self-righteous it's written, it's not them trying to point out irony they literally are just like "institutions bad" I was sitting in the official discord around the time it released and was a little perturbed about the long time hunter orgs from previous hunter resources (mainly Hunters Hunted 1 and 2) being turned into baby armor wearing bad guys and it's literally just them trying to be really "punk".
really would have helped their punk cred if they hadn't poured half a thesaurus into that book too
@TheBurgerkrieg" Punk starts with a feeling of resentment towards the system. To sow this resentment, we'll force them to do homework"
@@TheBurgerkrieg yeah, H5 has more pages dedicated to orgs as antagonists than monsters in a game about hunting monsters
The source of the Imbued is everyone's favorite jackass.
Hunter: The Reckoning is PLEASING TO THE EBON DRAGON!
I don't get it... can you olease explaine, I'm not that deep in WoD...
@@derigel9783 It was very extremely obvious at some point in HtR's lore, that the Imbued were given bootleg exaltation shards from the Ebon Dragon.
@@bejammin2000 Who/what is the Ebon Dragon?
@@derigel9783 The Shadow of All Things. A yozi, one of the primordials from the time before time, who convinced the emperor of the universe to create the Unconquered Sun to increase his own power, as Creation's first sun didn't cast shadows.

@@bejammin2000 And what are exaltation shards?
30:29 I see you Hunter The Parenting
I agree entirely with your overall analysis of the 5th edition 👍🏻 Also yeah the book is obnoxious and self righteous about the whole independent Vs Orgs. And I don't think they're being ironic or meta or whatever about it. I homebrew that aspect out and my players are free to join things such as the Society of Leopold or the Arcanum without losing their Drive (at least initially)...but at the cost of their freedom 🤷 Oh you want to save you grandma from being eaten? Too bad your objective is mere scouting without intervention, make your choice. Or maybe you want to banish the ghost around the well of your village? F you, your assignment is in Patagonia. But at least you'll fly there in business class.
So when I use a power as an imbued, could you say I'm edging?
One of the contributors to H5 is a Filipino, which is why you get a good amount of stuff from the region. As a person from the Philippines, it is great to see it come up more in WoD 5th Edition material, first in H5, and that little blurb from W5.
There was also an actual licensed Supernatural: The Role Playing Game, never got around to playing it so I don't know if it was any good, but the rule book was written with sort of Dean-like snark to it that made it fun to page through
This is actually what I thought he was talking about, I played a few sessions with some buddies and I actually really liked it but it is very mechanically obnoxious with its dice rolls and what not
Actually a better example of this game in cinema form, is the Bill Paxton film Frailty. It's so Hunter-esque they even reference it in the books, and whoooboy is it accurate.
I love all of these hunter the reckoning fanworks XD the moment they speak of us, the garou, immediately snap to the "don't even fucking think about it, these MFers will tear you to ribbons, go bother the camarilla they are much more punchable"
“I love you dean”
“Burgerkrieg released a video about hunter the reckoning”
35:01 Speaking of that moral friction one thing I love that fits so well in these kinds settings are the oh so classic
"Are we the bad guys?"
One thing i did in a game was bring up the fact most supernatural creatures didnt ask to be the way they are and not all monsters are inherently evil.
Like young vampires turned against their will, or a werewolf who was just born that way and raised as a human , or changelings who were stolen from their home, and wraiths who literally just died
The setting is also almost perfect for a scp themed story
That ending was singlehandedly the best ending I've ever seen LOL
God I saw the title and my dyslexia kicked in so I read “Hunter: The Parenting” from Bruva Alfabusa’s UA-cam series. 😅
Theres a tiny Big D in the thumbnail too so he knows lol
I don't have Hunter 5th (yet) but now im just imagining a vigilante hunter org that's a branch of the mafia

These videos are awesome, and also super hilarious for me personally. My only experience with WOD is playing werewolf both table top, and larp. I have never read or played anything else. It's funny to me to learn so much about this massive and cool world, and relating everything to a werewolf pov . I am really excited to see what video is next in this series 😂
10,000 pts for the Hunter the Parenting ref
I just realised why I like hearing you explain stuff. You sound exactly like Matt Berry its crazy. Hearing Matt Berry talk about my favourite TTRPG is not something I knew I needed XD
I forgot Hunter: the Parenting isn't the name of the game but I still find this video funny asf in places the same as HTP so this was fun
Wonder if people have just done a chronicle where they start as hunter then have the hunters slowly Change thru events. One dies with unfinished business becoming a wraith, one is kissed by a vampire, one survives a scuffle with a werewolf and maybe one becomes a mage. it would be interesting to see a bunch of friends split between the factions and “worlds of darkness”
I played a Hunter campaign where my character wound up getting embraced; I retired the character but when we began our V:TM game I brought him back and played him HARD as an Anarch.
@@LordMogatronbut imagine if your now vampire stayed with the hunter crew a full vampire helping a crew of hunters as a comrade now the crew is likely shunned by hunters and the vampire is also a target of the camarilla and hated by anarchs
@tysonbarton1926 I considered it but the power difference between even an imbued and a vampire is leagues different. Every encounter would basically just be "I rip its lower jaw off" lol Part of the fun of H:TR is the fact that you might die if you jump the gun
@@LordMogatronyeah that’s where it gets complicated.
@@LordMogatronut if you have a talented strategically minded storyteller there are ways to make combat interesting. An experienced hunter crew ambush yours. A blood hunt on the vampires head. You could stay but the hunters would need to heavily adapt it would kinda be a darkest hour. every encounter would almost kill one of the other hunters the vampire would have to be the heavy hitter and defend your fellow hunters as they support and cover you in combat.
Also what vampire did you get embraced by?
The Hunter : the parenting reference was fun
Someone in the Wraith video fuckinh called it 😆 it was gonna be Hunter next ~
But, it's not Werewolf.
Commitment goals.
I am once again requesting that you review, *Genius: The Transgression* to reveal the secrets of the Mad Scientists
This, and despite it's faults Promethean, both kinda filled spots I always felt were missing in the original World of Darkness.
We needed some good old Frankenstein/Jekyll/Invisible Man hijinks back then, and the Sons of Ether just disn't quite scratch the itch.
@@nigelhirth2181 I also love how, although the aesthetics of a Promethean or Genius game may appear similar to a Mage game, the thematics are entirely different.
The goal isn't, "Ascend to godhood, self-actualize to the point that you are above all reality." The goal is, "Take care of yourself. Don't lose your grip on reality. Call your parents and talk to them."
Technically wouldn't the 1st version have been Hunters Hunted, back in 2nd edition? Tjey did an entire "Year of the Mortal" where they introduced Numina powers, mediums, and all kinds of stuff that all kinda got mothballed when the "imbued" showed up. Glad to see the OG hunters got some respect eventually.
I actually love the idea of The Imbued, as it carries a lot of Bloodborne vibes. A hoonter must hoont.

I heard the HT:P reference lmao
Thank you for the video, your entire world of darkness series has made the world of darkness very easy to understand.
what I like about it is there is some very cleaver writing, for example kitten character when he spoke to pyoter about the fact he killed his own men with little mercy and hesitation it has more gravity to the fact that this happen to his two friends, were he caught his best friend eating his friends guts out like a cannibal, and his own best friend showed no remorse of it ignoring the blood complete I love it when writers focus on that and it just shows looking forward for more.
I bought your book but have not read it yet. Thank you in advance for writing it. I anticipate it to be great.
Hell yah new vid
I don't what I find crazier here... that this video has actually made me interested in Hunter the Reckoning... Or that Burgerkrieg is actually PRAISING a WoD 5 series!
'Cause I'm going to be honest (with apologies to Reckoning fans) having come to World of Darkness from Chronicles of Darkness, when I first read about Hunter: The Reckoning, my first thought was to rename it Psychopath: The Imbuing.
Also... The idea that the Imbued are supposed to be Solar EXALTED makes me laugh... but not in a good way, but in an awkward, "...You're joking, right? Please tell me you're joking. This has to be a really bad joke!"
Im glad the microphone sock is still with us all this time, hope he brings it to laundry from time to time ❤
I like that this newest version of Hunter seems like a distillation of all the good bits of the previous ones.
Also, glad to see Orpheus still exists.
Now I'm really curious when a Changeling decides to be a hunter and gets their glamour from other hunters who have hope that fighting the darkness will make the world better. Counterpoint, there will be exposure to banality, but if the Changeling can handle short term banality, they might gain long-term glamour.
great stuff!
Yaaaay another lore video
thank you
Can you start doing the Chronicles of Darkness games? I love your deep dive analysis and your take on how these games work and feel.
The road goes on, my friend. And so should you.

Thank you mr burger i love your work!

Absolutely love the Hunter: The Parenting reference!
I think a potentially cool way to play an entrepeneurial hunter whos more of a business type than a mad scientist type could be to play the "I know a guy" type
the fixer with the contacts, the fixer who isnt inventing and tinkering himself but can source what you need cause he Knows A Guy
Im playing a guy kinda like that in pathfinder right now, a rogue who is himself inexperienced in adventuring (I get bad rolls a lot) but has access to the various things a thief or assassin would have because he knows guys who can source these things, he knows someone who would buy that cool rare gem the giant spider was sitting on etc
so thats one way to do it I think
Crossing my fingers for the next to be Changeling of Werewolf
It won't be werewolf.
So what I'm taking away from this is that Sam Haight is just a misunderstood hunter.
Cool, coolcoolcool...
If you ever run a hunter game I have an idea for a character, Pam... Faight? She was born a kinfolk and her dad was all butthurt she wasn't a boy and a werewolf... 😜
No, he's dead.
Dead, and last I heard was turned into an ashtray when he hit the afterlife.
God i am so happy he keep's not doing werewolf, just leave it as the grand finale of the channel in however many years.
My best advice to people who wanna play hunter, use Hunter the Vigil or if you insist on WoD lore...just grab both The Hunters Hunted Books and use those
"The New World Order... ...by making sure nobody believes the Hunters."
Like, by making a clearly fictional show about Hunters?
Listening to this makes me want to bring in Delta Green to a WoD campaign
have you considered doing a video about how exalted is the past and or future of the world of darkness and how it all fits together?
I owned the video game as a kid. Had no idea it was a TTRPG
Great video, seems fun.
I loved in the game "Vampire: Bloodlines" where Beckett refers to the Society of Leopold as "murderers for Christ".
Thank you!
Genuinely have no interest in tabletop rpgs, but for some reason I see these videos from Burger and go "tell me all about this, I am invested."
I like to see the "tinkerer" aspect of the entrepreneurial creed, kinda like Stark/Iron Man. From a player perspective. The "I may be bankrolling this group, but I'm using that engineering degree to make new things to help, and after seeing the shit thats out there... Willing to put my butt on the line testing and perfecting it. "
If people ever get tired of dnd, i feel like this video is going to be a cornerstone for the swing into the World of Darkness the TTRPG world might be drawn toward.
