- Throughout the history of aviation, certain designs have emerged which have become icons within popular culture. One such design is the Bell UH-1 'Huey', an aircraft which played a pivotal role in the Vietnam War, and arguably one of the most memorable helicopters of the 20th Century.

The sound man, the sound. Nothing beats it.
Ah, yes...I grew up to that unique thumping. What's surprising is how hard they are to hear when flying close to the ground!
Used to hear them all the time in the 90s. Thwop thwop thwop. Iconic sound.
You're 100% correct....we recognize it, just like hearing a wet, sputtering fart ending in a rapid cheek clench followed by a hilarious wiggling waddle into any close private area
That was a good overview of the Huey history and models without bogging down in mindless details. One of my uncles was a Huey pilot for two Vietnam tours, 1965-66 incl. IaDrang/LZ-Xray and non-volunteered in Feb 1968 after Tet erupted and Huey pilots were in short supply. I had one mystery I couldn't figure out. I found about 20 boxes of Super 8 movie film he'd sent home from VN.
The postage marks were dated in 1962 and most IIRC listed his "address" as the 229th Av Bat. I watched a number of the films and yes, they were flying Hueys and yes, it was Vietnam. He never talked about a 1962 deployment to VN nor did any of our relatives. He was a stern, straight-laced serious officer with a flattop. He also took opsec seriously also. So this mystery has been simmering for 10 years and then a break-thru.!!
A month ago another video was going over the history of the Huey and mentioned a small number were sent to VN for testing with Special Forces in 1962. Bells started clanging and the puzzle came together. He was one of the pilots for first Hueys delivered to VN for combat testing.
My gut feeling is this was a low profile mission, as far as the US media was concerned. Of course, the VC, NVA, China and Russia knew about it immediately as you can't keep a Huey quiet unless you shut the engine off.
Its a good feeling to have success after years of searching and trying to make sense of past events. I've done a lot of genealogy work and that produces a lot of frustration with unanswered questions. This uncle is still around and getting around too much. He changed noticeably after his last VN tour. He couldn't sit still very long and always kept moving around the US, plus keeping a very low profile.
@LuvBorderCollies helicopter pilots have to be pretty brave. My flight instructor claimed its 10,000 spinning parts all wanting to snap off lol
Nothing replaces the reputation of the Huey: it already evolves ; UH-1Bs, 1Ds, AH-1B,F,S, 1H, The Bell 212, 214, 412, until to the latest derivative: the AH1Z Viper, & The UH1Y Venom,.... here in the Philippines, despite the use of our latest S70i Blackhawks, we still using the UH-1H/Ds & the Bell 412
When i hear these helicopters, i hear the music of the Rolling Stone's "Paint it Red", because of the Chopping sound
I’m so proud of having flown the Huey. I had 4.5 years flying that beautiful aircraft. While she tried to kill me 6 times, the excellent training I received got me through it.
I proudly served in the Middle East on that wonderful aircraft.
Of all the aircraft I’ve ever flown (Jumbo’s, B767, A330, Macchi Jets, C130A & H’s plus the old Winjeel) the Huey will always be my favourite.
Great content and deluvery. Thank you for creating this video. If i can make a request, keep the original format of old images, instead of streatching them sideways.
Thanks again

Whats the song at the beginning?
The Huey saved countless lives in Vietnam.
Eu sou muito fã do Bell uh-1
Any idea if Australia ever kept the ability to mount AGMs on their Hueys on hand for anti armour like the Americans did?
NAME OF THE SONG PLEASE HELP!
9:15 what is that thing on the front of tlhe UH-1M?
Apparently, some sort of early night vision device.
How about the 214B and ST...Outside off the Y model... The 214s are probably the most powerful off the Huey models. But the they never served with the US military.. It was the Iranians and Iraqis had them oddly enough..
"The 214s are probably the most powerful -off- *of* the Huey models.
