I sat in many times with Cedric who always welcomed me. He's the best drummer in this hill country blues style. He is powerful!!! They did great stuff with Lightnin' Malcolm too. His grandpa must be proud of him!
The real shame about R.L. is that just as he was starting to get widely noticed and making some money, his health started to fail him. Well, that's the Blues, I guess. Credit to Fat Possum Records for sticking with him and making him more widely known.
I saw him at the Horseshoe Toronto around 93 maybe ,taped it. but then lost the fucking tape somehow in a move! So glad I was able to see him and relive that show several times before I lost it . Awesome show with full band including his son too.Me and my buddy went backstage and we were smoking joints with him, he was so cool .
What y’all don’t understand, all them rock bands from the Beatles to the stones, zeppelin, sabbath, you name em. This music your hearing right here is what they was chasin.
@@markgriffin9699 , we can only hope so. I had a shaking my head moment recently, talking to a twenty-something kid who played a couple of songs on guitar at a memorial recently. I asked him who his favorite guitar players were, predictably he said John Mayer, Clapton, Joe Bonamassa and Stevie Ray Vaughan. My response to him was that "you're missing about 50 years of music prior to those guys!". This kid had never even heard of Bo Diddley! Or Brownie McGhee, or Freddy King and Albert King....much less Blind Willie Johnson, Fred McDowell, Tampa Red and so on.
I will never forget the first time I heard R L Burnside. I went to our local Fred Meyers store to drop off some shoes for repair. I heard this blues singer on the radio, and a young man of about twenty working there told me, "That's R L Burnside. I can't believe you've never heard of him. He's a famous blues singer." This was about ten years ago, and I never forgot him. That is pure, raw, beautiful talent!!!
This is Mississippi Hill Country Blues at its finest. Gives me chills each and every time I listen to it. "Burnside on Burnside" is the best Blues album I ever bought. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Yup. I'm not a blues expert, but I've got a broad collection of music and of the blues I've checked out RL Burnside is a stand out act. That album in particular is astonishingly captivating.
I read the comments and I am sooooooo pleased that there are many of you who love this stuff, that is just perfect, Burnside's name will be remembered forever!
I've just heard about him. He was amazing and I'm a bit pissed that he never got the recognition he deserved. But as you said, he's going to be remembered forever. He's still gaining fans. Hell of an artist.
Seen Cedric many times. He's a badass behind the kit and has now stepped out and plays guitar. Had the pleasure of seeing RL a couple of times before he passed. Love this music.
Brilliant! 👏👏👏 This is as raw (and as good!) as the blues get. Mr. Burnside got a very late start in his musical career 🎸 - but he made the best of it. I treasure his albums. RIP Mr. R.L. Burnside
If you know his story, we are lucky we heard that shout at all. He was a sharecropper in a house with a dirt floor and couldn't afford a guitar for a while. Recorded his first songs on a borrowed guitar when he was "discovered" by a musicologist in 1977.
R.L BURNSIDES!!! i love his music!! i am a southern boy, i moved to mississippi in 83-84, lived by the leaf river. wish i could have met R.L !!!!!! rip, mr. R.L. !!!
Great group of guys ! Neal Vitullo, Dave Howard, Steve Bigelow, and Michael LaBelle. I was a doorman at the Sea Note in Hull MA. Loved watching these guys perform together, and when Dave Howard had his band the High Rollers; and when he fronted for Roomful of Blues. Im glad they got back together. I got to see them last summer in Plymouth at this same place, thanks to my friend John Hall.
Same here. Thanks to Auerbach and Carney I discovered Bonamassa, Kimbrough, Burnside, Trout, T Model Ford, Lightnin' Hopkins and a whole slew of good old raw blues talent which floods my speakers daily. :)
I was lucky enough to see RL 'live' in a small club in Glasgow, Scotland in 1999, incredible talent with brilliant backing from Cedric and Kenny. No earthly reason why RL shouldn't be mentioned alongside John Lee Hooker, et al as one of the blues greats.
I love this redition of rollin and tumblin, and I love north hill country blues. I've noticed in all my favourite music, my most favourite is all very repetitive, more like rhythms than melodies. Maybe it's the cave man in me, but it's beautifully simple and simply beautiful.

Damn. I cam see now where The Black Keys got their sound, from these Hill Country guys. Amazing! I haven't picked up my guitar in 2 months. Time to blow the dust off
It's quite the journey. Junior Kimbrough and Fat Possum. Spend some time digging through the Alan Lomax Archives. Somewhere along the way you'll bump into JJ Cale and then you'll be pleased to learn about artists like Paul Benjamin and Jontavious Willis who are just knocking it out of the park and you can go see live TODAY (2022)! I saw both of them in a living room last night.
It's kind of sad thinking about how much respect this guy had in Europe while he was generally unknown throughout his career in his home country, along with the other Hill Country Blues guys. It would have been awesome to see this...three legit Hill Country musicians. I think they're even neighbors!
I watched this fella playing for his family at his home in independence, mizzzzizzzhzzippah. It's good to see his kin kept on playing the drums with him.
I was introduced to RL's music back in the early 2000's with Come On In. I bought Wish I Was in Heaven Sitting Down, then thought I lost that CD, so I bought another one. Turns out I lent it out and actually got it back again(that's rare) now I have 2 Heaven CD's.
This 84 year old white Texan still loves that music and always will!
This 15 years old russian boy loves blues before I was born

I've watched this at least 30 times. All Burnside's music is addictive. He's a person to study. A real musician.
INCREDIBLE!!!FROM BELGIUM I DISCOVER THIS MAN NOW!!!I LOVE IT!!!! FABULOUS !!
His children are still delivering the music. Mississippi has got some fresh chops centered in Clarksdale.
He is the “Bach” of the blues to me.
Yep
Ditto I play him over and over and over
2024 and the beat goes on! RIP RL Burnside, thanks for the music!!!
R. L. Burnside was highly under-appreciated. He was a great bluesman.
I'm so glad that so many people appreciate this.
Drummer is his grandson Cedric Burnside, who carries on to this day.
Nice to know. Thanks.
Cedric Burnside Project as well as a few others from the past few years...he kills on drums!
Sloan Skylar both Cedric and Kenny Brown were in Black Snake Moan backing up Sam Jackson
That young man kicks

The drummer is so proud to be there, and he should be! No other band in the world has this same sound.

Cedric Burnside. He's a great musician in his own right too - definitely check him out
