    Hi Susan! I've been winter sowing for the past 8-9 years with much success. Here are a couple of things that I do differently, first I drill multiple holes in the bottom of each container (7 or 8), plus I drill one hole approximately 1/2 inch up from the bottom, on each side. This allows excess moisture to escape faster when we get a spring downpour. One other thing, I use short pieces of tape, 2-3 inches long, to attach the top to the bottom. The reason I do this is for better airflow, it's easy to simply remove a couple of the short pieces of tape once the plants are up and growing. Also, I can completely open the container tops on sunny days to prevent the seedlings from cooking inside the (water or milk) jugs. I purchased several of those bottle-top waterers when I saw them in one of your previous videos, and I love them! Thank you for your always helpful and timely videos! ~Margie

    Just found your channel about an hour ago. Part way through the first video I stopped to watch your intro and found out you are in the Spokane area. Wow! Finally a gardening channel from where I live!
    I learned seed starting in a heated commercial greenhouse in Alaska and I love the process, but I don't have a really functional greenhouse where I am now, and there is neither room, nor light enough, to start much in the house. This winter sowing idea is amazing, but if I didn't know you were from Spokane I would assume this was for warmer climates only. There is a little voice in the back of my mind yelling "But these jugs are just going to turn into little ice bricks!" Does freezing really not hurt the seeds? I need to dig into this further.
    The downside of learning about winter sowing is that now I'm even further behind than I thought I was. Hahaha! Have just finished doing an inventory of my seeds over the last couple of days and need to get things ordered for this year, but I'm already seeing sold out notices on some seeds on some sites. Yipes!
    Thanks for your channel. I subscribed and am looking forward to binge watching your existing content.

    Thank you Susan. I can’t wait to try this method. I have a question. Is it better to place these jugs on top of soil or mulch? I think that retains the moisture for them better. I’m not sure. My garden beds path are made with little whit stones. So I wonder. If it doesn’t matter, I will just place them on the stone paths. Thank you.

    • @SusansInTheGarden

    Hi Susan. I am new to gardening. 2020 was my first season. I live in Central Georgia, zone 8. I read a lot about winter sowing and I thought it said I could start after the winter solstice. I started mine on December 26th. I have not lived here a full year yet. February 2021 will mark our first year here. With that being said we have had a few days in the 60s. Some of my jugs have sprouted. I realize I got out in front of my skis’ and wondered should I start over? Can I pull in the sprouted jugs overnight when it freezes? How cold is too cold to have the sprouts out since I would still like to have them be tough? If I do need to start over when should I restart? Is there a source that would tell me past weather patterns? I know this is a lot and any advice would be most helpful.

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, Glen. It's nice to meet you. I guess it depends on the types of seeds that have already germinated. If they are cool-season crops such as lettuce, spinach and kale, for example, they might be OK but naturally everything depends on what the rest of your winter is like. You could certainly bring the containers in if you notice the temps are really going to drop. One suggestion I have is to check out Joe Lamp'l's podcast and blog post about winter sowing. He lives in Georgia, outside Atlanta, so there might be some tips that will help you out. Here's a link: joegardener.com/podcast/winter-sowing-start-seeds-outdoors/. Best of luck.

      Only if the soil is dry. I'm not sure where you live, but in our climate in Spokane, Washington, I rarely have to water because of the snow, rain, hail and sleet. But it's important to keep an eye on the soil's moisture.

    • @SusansInTheGarden
      @SusansInTheGarden  3 роки тому

      Hi, Jennifer. That is a great question! I would have to say that it partly depends on where you live and how tough your winters are, but here are my thoughts: 1) Garden soil can become very heavy, wet and compacted over the course of a winter of rain, snow and freezing temperatures -- so this could make it tough for the seeds to germinate. 2) The potting soil or germination mix in the containers will stay fairly light, making it easier for the seeds to germinate. 3) The containers also hold a little more heat, which also will help with germination when the time is right.
