I appreciate the time you took in order to teach us how to score our buck racks, good luck this season, plan to make my first sit this cold front pushibg thru this weekend oct 6th thru 8th AR....
Well… Yes I agree so much that it is the only score I care about and the only one I mention when I tell someone the size of my buck or the buck I’m after. However, I disagree in the sense that Net score absolutely has its place and makes total sense in my opinion. B&C was wise enough to create a Typical category and a Non Typical category. Just because the majority of us hunters only care about gross score (gross gross if you’re talking about non-typicals) doesn’t mean Net score doesn’t have its place.
I have measured every 8 pointer wrong, I thought H4 was only for 10pts.+ I stopped at H3 on every single one. Sad part is that it explains it right on the online B&C scoring calculator, I had to check it when I heard you say it.
never hunted in my life....was wondering what made a 30 pt buck 30 points.....listened to your video about your 8 pt (?) buck (?) & found it very interesting! thank you!!
I don't hunt but love putting myself in the right spots , right time of year and right time of day just driving around cause they are so cool to see. I live in NE Iowa so plenty of nice deer to see! I can honestly say I've prolly never seen (if this is a 130) anything over a 150 in my life. I always felt like I see monsters every year but maybe even a none hunter like myself gets buck fever lol
I used to be just like you brother. I bought some property and decided to give hunting a try. After many attempts and figuring out what to do and what not to do I finally got one. I am hooked. Mine is only 111-4/8" but it's my first and a trophy for me.
…my view on hunting is a two-sides mirror tbh. On one side, I understand if you’re hunting to survive, but on the other hand I disagree with hunting for sport like just to have a trophy and score it in state records, ofcourse opinions vary amongst person(s) but just imagine this, you (the buck), your wife (the doe) and your child (the fawn) are just living in the forest with the rest of the deer, and out of nowhere “pop!” You feel a pain in your left rib cage, A human shot you with a 308. Lapua from 700 yards away, it went clean through your lungs, you run off but you don’t hear another shot and you continue to run until you can’t, you fall over and your eyes close, you are still able to consciously think, but you can’t help but only think about your doe and fawn, wondering if they will be okay while you are gone. Again, opinions vary amongst person(s) but I really disagree with humans hunting just for sport especially when we already have massive slaughter houses that feed the nation every day. If the slaughter houses shut down then i'd approve of hunting. not to say the world revolves around me, because it doesn't. but i wish hunters that hunt foe sport would at-least feel sympathy and honor in hunting their deer.
I haven't experienced it (yet!) but where are your 4 H measurements if you have a symmetric 10-pointer? (or anything more than the sample 8-pointer you presented) Thank you for the explanation and education!
The primary difference is that P&Y is for bow-harvested animals only, while B&C allows for animals harvested with a bow or gun. B&C also has higher minimum requirements to get into their record book. The scoring of the antlers is essentially the same though.
Pope and young is a private deal and can kinda make up their own rules of what can be in their books so the exclude cross bows and some other kinda strange rules on what equipment you use and things like that. This is stuff I have heard over the years but have never looked into it real deeply. Does this sound right Justin.
If you want to get real specific boon Crockett is any weapon, Pope and young is bow And it was created I wanna say in the sixties in the sixties maybe the seventies, The 2 people that's their last names Pope and young they had a huge early bow hunting in the United States Like in the same class as Fred bear type of influence. But they wanted a scoring system that was unique to bow honey so a 140" buck that was killed with a gun at 100yd would not super seed a 139" deer killed at 10 yd with a bow. And that is like a crappy overview of it all, if you really read into it it's pretty neat and you can learn a lot about the history of how bow hunting come about and how we got to where we are today in some ways I wish it was like it was an old days
The only "spread" measurement you add to the score is the greatest INSIDE spread. You can always measure the outside spread and tip-to-tip length, but those 2 don't count toward the buck's score.
You measure the greatest distance between the two beams, regardless of where it happens to be. If the beams extend out, then you could be measuring at the tips rather than in the middle. It all depends on how the antlers grew.
@@bowhuntordie I thought the inside spread, while measured at the widest point, still had to be 90 degrees to the skulls center line (wording on the score sheet.) Meaning you cannot arc your tape around to different points of the opposite beam. It must stay, in essence, parallel to the frontal/coronal plane (medical term) of the skull. Am I wrong on this?
You would just count the last measurement twice. So 1st would be between brow tine and base. 2nd is between brow tine and G2. 3rd & 4th are between G2 and the end of the main beam.
Dumbest thing I ever did was to NOT get my trophy measured. This rack is small compared to my one big one. It had G1 times that were 12 inches (and they were the shortest), it was almost symmetrical. The inside spread was 25-1/2. Shot in mid Wisconsin. I do not even have it anymore as I got tired of moving it when I moved for work.
I have a question. I got my first whitetail a couple of weeks ago and would like to score it for myself. The problem I have is it was a 10 point, but he broke one G1 and both G3 off somehow. How do I score broken tines? Do I at all? One G3 is broke off right at the main and the other G3 is about 2 or 3 inches long. And the one G1 is broke off right at the main. Help please
Since you're just looking for a rough score and not doing this officially, leave the G1 as zero, and measure whatever is left of the G3. It doesn't have to be exact if you just want a rough idea of how big the deer's rack is.
@@reddawng43x91 yes actually they do record that number. It don’t go towards the score of the buck but it does get recorded just as Justin said for statistics and for biology and the study of deer.
great video but i believe you are wrong on where to start your main beam iv bean doing research and it appears that you are suppose to start the measurement above the eye. on the side
You basically do it the same as a regular tine coming off of the main beam. So for a split G2, you measure whichever tine is the "main" one from the base of the tine. And measure the split tine from where it comes off the "main" tine, if that makes sense.
Informative presentation. However, I take exception to the suggestions to not worry about exact measurements and to simply get it close. I realize we aren’t talking about a world record here and that this was a demo on “how to score a deer”. However, a measurement for a P&Y scoresheet is a measurement, not a rough estimate. Thats why you’ve got a tape measure with precise marks in your hands. The beauty of the P&Y and B&C systems, along with the sheer enjoyment of learning to score your deer and compare notes with your hunting buddies comes from being as accurate as possible, not inaccurate. My .2 cents. Regardless, I appreciated your efforts in the presentation.
I have watched other guys measure and add from tip to tip, is this for net only. And your camera did not show and you did not explain we’re to hold your tape from your G3 to the tip then go half way and then measure your circumference.
The tip-to-tip measurement does not account into scoring, but you can certainly measure just to know. As for the 2nd question, I'm not exactly sure what you're asking...circumference measurements are only taken from the main beams of the rack, between each tine. You do not measure the circumference of any tines.
When talking about measuring antlers, you actually don't change the fraction. If it was 6 and 6/8ths, you would say that instead of 6.75 or 6 and three quarters.
At the end there you said you add in abnormal points to get gross score. Thats not correct. Abnormal points do not get added to the gross score and for the net score they are deducted
Two things…I won’t pass a deer that I would shoot on the last day of a hunt. Secondly, I only measure so I can talk about the deer better(brag) I don’t brag but if someone told me they bought a car and I ask them what color and they say idk I don’t really get into the politics of that….I’d uhhh
I was thinking the same thing. When you are scoring a buck, when you get to the mass measurements, it says if present. There shouldn’t be a 4th mass measurement on an 8 point. And surely not a 3x3.
ok…. im a carpenter. ive watched like seven videos in the last week. by chance. this is the first vid on scoring deer ive watched. and every single guy. said either 2/8,4/8,and 6/8. like seriously guys. its basic math. or….. is there a specific reason per scoring rules that you cant simplify the fractions. or are all these guys just too dumb to simplify a fraction. well let me help everyone. 2/8 is 1/4. or a quarter inch. 4/8 is 1/2. which is a half inch. 6/8 is 3/4 or…. three quarters of an inch. see where im going there. stop saying 6/8. in mathmatics those arent real numbers. hence why there are fractions in the first place. if the numbers were the former. there would be a nullification of all fractions. ever. so lets get a bit smarter and call the fractions as simplified as we can. thanks.

Same as the video but the last mass measurement would be the thinnest spot between the G3 and G4 on a ten point.
Excellent tutorial
Well my biggest buck I shot was a 7 pointer that was missing the middle beam on one side and it scored 96 3/8 I’m now gonna check it years later lol
It was accurate
A good tutorial. Thanks! One question. What's the difference between Boone & Crockett, and Pope & Young? Why are there 2 different scoring systems?

Great tutorial
Awesome vid. Thanks for this
Flexible tapes are also typically available at sewing stores, since tailors use 'em to measure people.
Excellent video. 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you, I just got my Maine buck scored and its net was 201.50
Pretty rare in the state of Maine
Big bodied deer but just don't have the Agriculture and abundant minerals to find a ton of deer in the 200 range here
My son got a 151 & 6/8 inches
I didn't know stickers had to be an inch....I was always told a quarter inch or hang a ring on it....man...mine just got smaller lol.
When you measure the main beam you have to measure from the lowest point on the ntler
Good stuff, thanks!
Never measured a rack. But my ol ladies 😂
What did it score?
Would the left eye guard split be a deduction, what would make it not a deduction? If both were split?
Do you add the greatest spread and the tip to tip spread to the score
The only "spread" measurement you add to the score is the greatest INSIDE spread. You can always measure the outside spread and tip-to-tip length, but those 2 don't count toward the buck's score.
@@bowhuntordie thanks for the feedback
@@jackandtheoutdoors9756 no problem!
Great video
How would you get your fourth measurement on a 7 point when one side has an eye guard, a G2 and then his main beam.
Good, Thx
Good video. Thanks!
Thanks!
So if you are measuring the inside spread and the beams angle out at the top do you measuring the top or bottom of the beams?
You measure the greatest distance between the two beams, regardless of where it happens to be. If the beams extend out, then you could be measuring at the tips rather than in the middle. It all depends on how the antlers grew.

Let’s say you shot a monster 3x3 whitetail. How would you get your 4th circumference then ?
You would just count the last measurement twice. So 1st would be between brow tine and base. 2nd is between brow tine and G2. 3rd & 4th are between G2 and the end of the main beam.
How would you score a deer that has 2 antlers growing out the one side?
This is the most convoluted thing ever.
Beautiful trophy
We call that a 3 pointer out here in the PNW.
What if the rack only has 1 g1? I'd assume there's no inside spread measurement there?
As long as there are 2 beams, you will have an inside spread measurement.

How would you measure for example, a split g2. The tine is Y shaped?
You measure the main tine as usual, then measure the secondary (abnormal) tine from the base of the tine that it splits from to the end.
THANKYOU
Lul. Deductions. I’m sure the deer was thinking of that 😂
What do they do with the outside spread, and tip to tip measurements?
Nothing really - they are just for statistical purposes.
No such measures as outside spread
@@reddawng43x91 yes actually they do record that number. It don’t go towards the score of the buck but it does get recorded just as Justin said for statistics and for biology and the study of deer.
One question. Why is this deer considered a 6 point, and not an 8? Why isn't the end of the beam also considered?
The beam is considered a point, so this is an 8 point rack.
Someone will watch this 20 years from now and say what is writing on paper? Lmao
great video but i believe you are wrong on where to start your main beam iv bean doing research and it appears that you are suppose to start the measurement above the eye. on the side
How do you guys measure a split G2 or split brows?

So how many h measurements would a 9 point have, If it’s only 4 how would I take that measurement
Measure just like he did on the 4 point side and measure between the G3 and G4 on the five point side.
Why do you get a 4th mass measurement on an 8 point?
Every buck, no matter how many points, always has 4 mass measurements on each side.
Even a spike?
Can’t wait to get my buck back from taxidermy so I can score it. The Guy said it’d probably be mid 140s .
