    Your channel has been an interesting peek into the world of deer hunting as a sport. I come from a background of purely meat harvesting out of necessity and it's interesting to see two different (though not opposed) views of the art of hunting white tails. Cool content and nice art! I really love your identifying hit location video.

      Appreciate that! It's rare these days for people to be open to anything new or unfamiliar to them. My 8 year-old is fascinated with processing and eating deer and turkeys, so we spend a lot of time together hunting does and processing them for the freezer. It's not all about antlers, and hunting with him has reminded me of that 👍

    The dark side of scoring is it has ruined hunting for the average Joe on the weekends. He sees things on social media or tv and thinks that’s what he’ll see and what he expects. Success should never be measured on another man’s standard

      That was the big time hunting shows we had growing up.
      Bill Jordan and Jackie Bushman only hunted well manicure, highly managed private farms that had employees keeping track of the mature deer all year long. They hunted fantasy land farms that took very little hunting skill to be successful...
      They are the direct root cause for this big buck nonsense we deal with today !
      They fooled us all into thinking killing these big bucks is easy and that they were actually legit big buck hunters...lol
      We all know now they just simply paid big money and they weren't really that great at actual hunting !

      100% we can't measure success with a score. But I'd say the negatives have more to do with social media than scoring itself. Boone and Crockett started scoring big game in 1902

      @@RyanKirbyArt you’re probably right on the social media being the main cause. I’ve seen so many 100-120” deer killed (which I’ve shot too) on social media and people bash the hunter for it. If that hunter legally harvested it and it makes them happy then we need to congratulate them. Not be rude like others “well he needs two more years” etc

      You my friend are right, hunting is for obtaining food for you and your family.

      So true! On my last full day of a dream hunt in Alberta, I missed out on filling my tag when I passed on a small buck because the guy I was hunting with swore he "saw" a bigger buck through the fog. When the fog cleared, there were no deer in sight. :-(

    I have a deer that has palmations or paddles on both sides. I am curious how to score those.

    • @RyanKirbyArt
      @RyanKirbyArt  3 місяці тому

      Without seeing pics and assuming the palmation is on the beams, I would imagine it just adds to the mass measurements. You should check with a local P&Y or B&C scorer if you really want it done right 👍🏻

    Do you on measure 4 Circumference? What if it is a 10 point? Would you measure that 5 circumference too?

    • @njdevilsb
      @njdevilsb 2 місяці тому

      You only get 4 circumference measurements. Whether the rack has 4 typical points per side or more, the last circumference measurement comes between the G3 and G4 (3rd and 4th points starting with the brow tines and moving out).

      I did! I left out the part about shaving off an 1/8 of an inch on every tine and beam though 😂

    Is that measurement between the main beams inside to inside? Or center to center ??

  • @johnkaras5396
    @johnkaras5396 Місяць тому

    Your video shows in 8 point, For measuring the circumferences, you just measure 4 times and how about a 10pt can l measure between the G4 and 5

    • @madwe2269
      @madwe2269 Місяць тому

      Every deer gets 4 mass measurements on each side. Between the base and g1, g1 and g2, g2 and g3, g3 and g4. On deer with less than five typical times you divide the measurements based on how many tines they have. If it's on an 8 like this you go halfway between the g3 and the end of the beam. On a 6 you divide into thirds and measure the 1st and 2nd third between the g2 and end of the beam.

    Where can we get your scoring sheet?

  • @handlesaredumb1

    How to score? Yay, I got meat and it had antlers, score! Yay, I got meat and it didn't have antlers, score! Anything else is poaching and ruining hunting.

    • @Night-le9ys
      @Night-le9ys Місяць тому

      Very extreme point of view, and one that could be argued that your type of attitude *calling other hunters that disagree w your point of view* "poachers" is what's ruining hunting...poaching is illegally taking game---because a hunter likes to measure the inches of a rack by no means makes that person a poacher..

    • @handlesaredumb1
      @handlesaredumb1 Місяць тому

      @Night-le9ys If you ask someone if they would still hunt deer if they didn't grow antlers and they say no, trophy poacher.

    • @Night-le9ys
      @Night-le9ys Місяць тому

      @@handlesaredumb1 well, clearly you are one of those types of ppl who is willing to change the English language to suit their agenda, and I don't have much time to debate those types of people. The word poaching will never mean taking an antlered deer legally. No matter how many times you say it, "poaching" does not mean someone who measures the antlers of an antlered game animal....
