my '07 AWD 3.3 3rd row does pretty well in light off-roading. We easily get into camping spots, down the tote-roads to the swimming hole, and towing my snowmobile/boats to those secret launching spots. Obviously, no lift kits or locking diffs. But, with slightly more aggressive tires and patient control of the throttle you can get most placed 90% of families want to go. Still want a 4dr Wrangler Diesel.... but the Highlander will do well for now until the kids are a bit older.
i take my 04 off road, to places I shouldnt all the time, dont go mudding or crawling, But if you are careful and dont drive like a rally driver, monster truck driver and it will go places you cant imagine, and never let you down, I love it, put a hundred thousand kms on in 2 years, just oil changes. no complaints....oh if you have kids, go leather:)
It's good in the snow thanks to its weight. But remember tire choice is the most important! Car & Driver did a test a few years ago and found a 2wd car with dedicated snow tires performed considerably better than an AWD car/SUV with all-season tires.
I have an 04 Highlander, plows through small snow drifts pretty good during snowstorms. Maybe someone can tell me whagt thet "snow" button is near the shift? the manual isn't pretty clear on what it's for.
Soft-Raoders we call them....Able to get a little further down the dirt road than a Subi but not much...Check the Hybrid box and get the label warning "Not for off-road use!"

@CrashJSTest We took clean stills and details of one vehicle but drove another for a couple weeks for testing.
ect snow makes it take off in 2nd gear so theres less whell spin
How is this car in the snow? Is its awe compatible to Subaru's symmetrical awd? Or Audi's Quattro?
