Waldemar Januszczak's final film takes a road trip across North and South America to look at sculpture in the landscape. Waldemar visits the stunning sculptures of the Spiral Jetty and the Sun Tunnels in the USA, and the Inca settlement on Machu Picchu in Peru. He also looks at the wonder of Stonehenge and ends up in the amazing Roden Crater: a 30-year sculptural project in a volcano in Arizona.

Ik voel mij net als Charlie Chaplins die in een film speelt van een fabriek die tegen de klok werkt en aan de lopendebandwerk moet verrichten die steeds sneller gaat alle moertjes en schroefjes moet aandraaien zodat het niet uit elkaar zou vallen op een gegeven moment hangt hij aan de wijzers om het tegen te houden een echte nachtmerrie dus ,de waan van de dag en toch je niet kunnen verroeren om het te ontlopen want je weet niet wat je overhoopgegooid wordt voor anderen 😮 zal kijken of ik die weer terug kan vinden die Charlie

FAM kaneel ? Waar ik een poosje voor gewerkt heb ,zij hadden twee zonen een ervan zag ik sporadisch de andere heb ik nooit gezien zij hadden een winkel met huishoudelijke artikelen maar ik werkte in de huishouding was mijn eerste baantje voor 30 gulden in de week 😂 heb er niet zolang daar gewerkt kon ergens anders meer verdienen 50,00 gulden in de week

For me, the spiral jetty imitates sacred geometry.
You and your crew are amazing Waldemar, just so great. One of the things I noticed is that when you give the first part of a sentence, I can't wait for the second part. The music over your voice? Ehhhh. Your self deprication? 😍

Brilliant
All that land art is just incredible and awe-inspiring. The guy who shaped the volcano was absolutely right: we are a part of nature and the cosmos - we just pretend we're not. Land art seems to highlight our connection to the universe around us. Unlike statues of a person, this is about something much bigger than an individual.
Somehow, it also seems to make a good point: we're capable of working with the landscape and nature to create wonderful things (even if we use nature and alter it). A lot of our cities just trample nature underneath and exploit, but In the end, humans are actually capable of using nature for our purposes without destroying it...if we want to.

Back in 1978, I walked up Macchu Picchu and Wayna Picchu with a broken leg and touched the clouds at the peak.The Inca Gods were helping all the way.

As the 'keyhole' circle becomes an ellipse, do others see labia? It adds to the symbolism as the visitor emerges through into the world.

Whoa, half way through listening to/watching this, I had fallen down a google maps rabbit hole. I eventually stumbled upon a glitchy keyhole shape in one location, then a couple minutes later they mentioned the keyhole thing here. Wiiiild. Land art is rad.

at 36:04 after Waldemar says it's an abstract representation of the mountain in the back and the guy sitting there watching him say this turns back to look over his shoulder to see if the mountain behind him actually looks like the rock sitting in front of him.

Terrific presentation, as always, by Waldemar. The Byrds are one of the best 60s groups with which to travel through that part of the American landscape (heck, I even have a three-disc CD of the Byrds in my car, which I can also use for driving through Chicago). And yes, all the other musics fits perfectly, too. Thanks for posting this.

I was trying to identify that song as he was driving towards that spiral, I have heard it recently but could not tell its title because he speaks whenever they sing.

Sacsayhuaman was not built by the Incas. The wall with the huge stones in Peru are a lot older. Machu Picchu was built by the Incas. The Incas ruled from 1438 to 1533 when the Spaniards came.

He says nature has been toying with us, perhaps it is the other way around, and we got more than the spiral jetty by now, very entertaining indeed.

Maybe the symbols were trying to communicate with or entertain birds.

I was flabbergasted when I listened to Waldo's take on Stonehenge. Forever, to me, Stonehenge was about procreation. The ancients gathered the bones of Mother Earth (the stones) and assembled the womb of the Earth waiting for the Sun to consummate creation. The world was renewed when the vitality of the Sun was injected into the womb of the mother. Stonehenge was not only a timekeeper, but it was also there to ensure survival for another year. Anyway, just sayin'

They've upped the conditions on the Machu Picchu train! When I was there about 20 years ago the 'hostesses' had red jackets, but none of the rest was there, the loos did' work, and the only sustenance you could buy was a can of Inca Cola! Gee I'm getting old! Loved it then tho, glad I was there to meet the black llama at dawn, before the first train arrived!

Ja dat is hij ,daarom wil ik ook niet dat hij gekwetst wordt of zijn fam ,hij sprak eens over een dochter dus waarschijnlijk getrouwd en dan kom ik met mijn gejank aanzetten nee doe het niet meer gewoon hoe hij afgeschilderd werd bij tijd en wijle deed bij mij de deur dicht terwijl hij zoveel documentaires heeft gemaakt wat echt de moeite waard was alleen dat Engels was een punt maar dat was mijn tekortkoming nee de laatsten kon je zien dat hij qua gezicht vermoeider werd ( zorgelijker ) deed mij wat ,maar nog steeds dat jongetje zien die hij blijkbaar eens was ( leergierig zijn wereld verkennen ) nee nu stop ik ) ga het niet herhalen hij weet het en dat is genoeg blijft een zwak punt 😢

The Inca themselves said they didn't build those walls. They were there when they arrived.
Having been to the GSL, I don't know how he filmed the Spiral Jetty sequence without swatting one sand fly. We couldn't even get out of our car the day we went to Antelope Island.
I've always heard that the Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake was supposed to represent the Native American idea that the lake was connected to the ocean by an underground tunnel to the ocean and that's why it was salty.

Um, the lower, larger and tightly fitted stones were done by an earlier people. On top of these, the Inca (they only lasted 100 years) built the upper, less precise and less elegant structures on top. The point of Machu Picchu was its remoteness. There were natural springs that provided the water, and people could hide there, basically forever. This is the explanation given by archeologists. Throughout the Andes are similar structures, enormous rock walls made with incredible precision topped by a second, less elegant, layer. Inca were sophisticated agriculture technologists. Terraces created unique environments, with unique micro-climates on different levels suitable for different crops.

Does anyone know what the song is at 8:20, when he's on the spiral jetty? I think it's a harp? Not sure. Shazam doesn't know, and it isn't credited anywhere. I MUST FIND THIS SONG. It's so damn beautiful, and I want to know who performs it.
Ja daar was ik ook erg van onder de indruk deze muziek erbij sloeg echt alles daar wilde ik ook naar informeren vanwaar deze muziek afkomstig was het was echt muziek voor mijn oren was perfecte combinatie met het geheel echt schitterend daar was Waldemar ook in zijn element hij lachte ( wat hij te weinig doet hij fronst meer dan hij lacht ( krijgt hij kuiltjes in zijn wangen 😅)

But back in the 1960s he [James Turrell] was a young pilot who often hung out at the Santa Monica Airport. [Stanley] Kubrick had rented a hangar there to do some of the visual effects for 2001 and Turrell was hired on to help.

*KURT ANDERSEN:* “So tell me exactly…what was the work you did on the film.”

Seems to me that Waldemar was as little impressed with Machu Picchu as I was at the turn of the year 2004/05 and I even had much more sunshine then. It was exactly New Years Eve and I was height sick. But there really is much more to be seen in all the other places in this video! Well done again, Waldemar

Can't everything with these documentaries at face value. Whomever writes them does once in a while present something as if it's an incontrovertible fact when that's not the case or, at the very least, the respective scientific community is still undecided about it.
What if Stonehenge is just an ancient rest stop of sorts. Like a Starbucks, McDonalds, toilets and maybe a hotel ...
