I grew up in the SLC area and yet I was nearly 29 before visiting Spiral Jetty. I spent this past New Year’s Eve night there and was overwhelmed with joy at the experience even though it was only lit by the moon. My wife and I walked barefoot in the cold sand. Not talking. Just walking. It was wonderful.
I remember seeing the Spiral Jetty in the late 90's right after it resurfaced. All the black rocks were covered with beautiful salt crystals. It was magic.
I live around the area this was filmed. It is kind of crazy to see landscapes that I take for granted so beautifully captured. It makes me appreciate what I have
It's amazing to see the mountains I look at every day portrayed in the background of some of the most incredible works of art in Utah recorded with such beauty and care. It used to be my dream to leave Utah after highschool, but I look around at all the incredible and unexpected art and scenery here and it's videos like this that make it so difficult to leave. I enjoyed it so much, thank you
Thanks for taking the time to come out to my home state and sharing the beauty of land art. I work in Box Elder County so I heard lots about Nancy Holt over the years.
There's so much more going on in here than I'd have guessed just looking at a list or even pics of these installations. Thank you. Those sun tunnels! Wow.
Wow! Thanks for teaching me about these moving and beautiful installations in a place I wouldn't have thought to look for them!! I feel a roadtrip calling me. Also the photography and editing of this video is particularly stunning.
The sun tunnels are my favorite as a utahn because most people here don't know about them. They are so simple and beautiful but so empty for 363 days of the year. The other 2 days people visit for one fleeting moment as the sun rises or sets, so 4 times a year it seems, people care about them. The rest of the year they are constant, and I love to visit them
Thanks for highlighting my beautiful home state! Next time you come to utah, make sure you hit some of the state/national parks (my favorites are zion and arches)
That was absolutely gorgeous. My todo list now includes getting a drone to take footage like you did over some of those salt flats. Seriously, that was amazing.
This is an amazingly beautiful video! Spiral jetty and Sun Tunnels are some of my favorite pieces of art to talk about with my students at BYU (when I'm a TA for Interdisciplinary Humanities classes). It's art that you can climb on and through and over and it's a road trip away, so go see it! We were planning on making some sort of trip out to the Salt Flats next month and this gave us the perfect guide. Thank you so much for featuring Utah! I'm so excited to see more from this channel! It's one of my absolute favorites.
My best friends and i are road tripping this summer from KC, Kansas to Seattle and this is on our way!!!! I’ve added it to our list of places to stop by! So excited to see it in person
Thanks you for continuing to include artitecture in your work. And I see you up there, Arts Indianapolis Homes Realty, Lawrence Abrahamson, Patrick Hanna, M12 Studio, Robert Rupp, and Constance Urist. Your are the best, thank you for patronizing art.
This is probably one of the videos I've watched the most on UA-cam. The beautiful scenery, the calming voiceover and abundant information never fail to give me a sense of calm and grounding. I love it so much ! Thank you for providing such amazing content. xx
Fabulous! I've always considered land art a kind of installation art (which I love) writ large, and the Spiral Jetty is on my list of places to go and experience. The interactions between our intervention and the surroundings, both physical and ephemeral (such as by sight lines or registrations) is electrifying to me, heightening awareness and being somehow wonderfully grounding. I'm also intrigued by Mineralogy! That looks like a wonderful piece. Thank you for another great episode!
The art assignment videos are usually well done and nicely shot but this epidsode became a piece of stunning art! Just beautiful. I felt emersed even though im watching on my phone.
I am from Box Elder County (Brigham City), and earlier this Summer, I visited the Spiral Jetty for the first time! It was really cool to see it featured on The Art Assignment and to learn more about the history. Thanks!
This was awesome! I lived not far from those Utah sites for most of my childhood, and I still haven't been out to see them. All of this made me think of a piece of land art in Idaho. It's a recreation of the Chartres labyrinth made on the desert floor with lava rock. It's one of my favorite places on earth. Maybe it could make it into one of your videos someday!
Now I'm going to be waiting for the salt-food-art connection video. It's seems like you were speaking slightly slower in this episode, I appreciated it.
I have been in love with spiral jetty since I had to do a project On it in one of my bachelors art history courses, I don’t remember much of what I wrote now but the spiral jetty has mystified me ever since.
This is simply amazing. I am in the process of writing an art history paper about the symbolism of the spiral, and it's been amazing to read about Smithson's process.
I really liked this one. I'm from utah, and all of the pieces felt kind of desolate?? in a familiar way?? what you said at the end summarizes my feelings about being out in the desert and in utah really well, there are signs of human interaction and development and attempts everywhere, but the overtaking of the salt and water and sand is affecting. All of these pieces had the same loneliness, the same feeling of asking you to project your own quiet introspection into the deteriorating place, and then flip to the opposite, making you take in the history and the successes and failures of another time. I have more thoughts, but they are still nebulous (I say as if the previous ones were fully thought out :P), I'll have to wait. p.s. I could feel the texture of the ground beneath my feet in some of these shots, it was really transportive.
If these are your "nebulous" thoughts, I am jealous of your communicative abilities! Wonderful to hear your thoughts, and I'm glad I picked up on some of the same feelings during our short time there. I felt like I was on another planet!
The Art Assignment well Montreal has the Montreal museum of fine art and musee d'art contemporain. The mmfa has a great wing on design which would be cool to cover and a very eclectic mix of contemporary work as well. Le Contemporain has all your big hitters but also tons of Canadian work that may not of been as widely known for the rest of the world and would be super fruitfull to explore and introduce in a video. I like to recommend a Mural walk to people coming here since it's a great way to explore the city and see some beautiful murals on the way (use a bixi bike for this perhaps). As far as smaller galleries go Concordia University has the FOFA Gallery which tends to have interesting shows going on, as well as the Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery. Darling Foundry SBC Gallery Arsenal Gallery McCord Museum 1700 La Poste And many more I moved here from BC and the biggest difference I noticed was how saturated BC is in indigenous first Nations work, particularly carving, which isn't as prevalent here. Nevertheless, decolonization is one of the most popular themes I see being dealt with in Canadian art and so that might be an interesting perspective to view work here. And of course there's plenty to see in Ontario and Nova Scotia
Gorgeous video. Please never stop making these! I live in Portland at the moment and I am most definitely going to plan out a trip to see all of these. Thank you so much for the information!
love this! I've been dying to watch things after the case for land art ❤❤❤ I'm so ready to watch more episodes, and support this amazing channel on patreon :)
I always love Art Trip episodes. The (what I am assuming are drone) shots were breathtaking. It's also so fun that you got see him as he was getting the water for the installation! Was that planned or just luck?
That was planned. I worked with the artist a number of years ago on a museum project, and had been trying to figure out a way to meet up with him and show you all his work for a while! And yes, Mark outdid himself with the dronework. Have to think of more drone-friend art trip locations (far from airports!).
Omg! I dream to see this upclose! I really love these art trip series, I feel like I’m travelling with you! I want more of those episodes! And by the way, come to Brazil, my country, especially Inhotim! ♥️
I've been out to Spiral Jetty many times, when it was underwater and when it was dry, and I'm so glad you got to go. But, despite living so close, I've never even heard of the art installment in Wendover! I'm going to have to go asap. One piece that I was expecting you to comment on was the Tree of Life, a controversial art piece on the road between Salt Lake and Wendover. It's kind of a concrete tree with big round somethings hanging off it. I have to admit I've never talked to anyone who's liked it...
We did see Tree of Life, but it seemed too difficult to document well. There's no real spot to pull over, and it's surrounded by barriers. We got a terrible shot of it zipping by our car window. Felt it was better to leave it out. What's your opinion?
I've never loved Tree of Life aesthetically, but I admit I've never tried to learn anything about it. You've inspired me to investigate it and learn its story.
@@outofmymind3596 I know this is a very late reply, but I noticed that the Springville Museum of Art has some of Karl Momen's preparatory sketches of the piece while going through their collections. As I recall, they were actually quite lovely -- definitely hint at his architectural training. I'm afraid I don't have much more to offer than this, but since you mention you're not too far away, perhaps this might be a worthwhile line of investigation should you be compelled to pursue it!
I loved this video so much. The whole time I just wanted you guys to make a video about Oregon (my home state and favorite state in the US). You should make video about each state and the important art in each.
Wonderful! I was hoping that "Metaphor/Tree of Utah" created by Karl Momen, located in the Bonneville Salt Flat was going to be mentioned. It's a pretty intriguing piece
Local Utah Artist here from maybe 10-15 miles from the Salt Flats. Yes, Utah is very pretty. It’s unfortunate that you guys saw only a narrow part of it. If you want beauty and it’s like April, hard to beat the High Uintas, also the Red Rocks in Iron County are quite pretty. Those “desolate” areas sure can bloom pretty quickly too. UT-202 lights up with sunflowers most years. I would like to point out that those tracks in the end of the video near where it’s been flooded..... could be from up a year or more ago. There’s nothing “fresh” about them. With how far out the flooding is, they’d be deeper if they were recent because the people who made those tracks would have gotten stuck, or near enough. Tracks can last a very long time out there. Pretty much, just warning the non-locals who would like to visit not to drive out too far in ‘wet’ season. It takes a lot, but those Salt Flats do end up partially covered in snow sometimes too. Very pretty photography, and now, I have like 2 more things to do next time I’m in Wendover.
i just wanna echoe veryone else and say this video is beautiful. it feels so calming too, with the works in the middle of nowehere on their own (kinda like the marfa video, actually). it warms my introvert heart lol
Yes! James Turrell has bee building his Roden Crater north of Flagstaff for many, many years. I don't think it's officially open? It's been on my list for a long time, but I don't think he'd let us film there. It just can't capture the true experience of light and space. rodencrater.com/
Wish you guys would do an “A case for: Latin American Art.” I was taking a surrealism class when the Case for: Surrealism, came out and it helped me so much. Honestly, I wish there was an episode for all the art history courses I have to take, hahahaha.
What a beautiful video. -John

And I would like to go there! But it's so far, I live in southern Sweden. Appreciate it and we'll see if I can get there some day.
Me to!!
A bit of looking but very worth finding
Great sunrise
This was a great video. I learned a lot and had a fun time pulling back things I used to know about land art. Thanks!
You're welcome! (My video research process can be aptly described as "pulling back things I used to know")
This episode is BEAUTIFUL. More drones, please. Thanks.
it was

I’ve lived here all my life. ♥️ it’s beaUTAHful
Jordan Me too. Weirdly never heard that pun. 😂 It’s fantastic.
HECK YEAH
I have added visiting the sun tunnels to my bucket list solely because of this channel
Have a full tank of gas and lots of water and snacks. It's completely worth it.
Ahh, I’m from Northern Utah and it’s so nice to see it represented!
Thanks for taking the time to come out to my home state and sharing the beauty of land art. I work in Box Elder County so I heard lots about Nancy Holt over the years.
Not only are the videos deeply informative, they are beautiful as well, and not only because they describe beautiful objects.
There's so much more going on in here than I'd have guessed just looking at a list or even pics of these installations. Thank you. Those sun tunnels! Wow.

Burkley Page Nancy Holt’s 😭😭 I badly want to go
This video was absolutely gorgeous. We're also suckers for crystal formation.
Incredible episode. Thank you.
Thanks for highlighting my beautiful home state! Next time you come to utah, make sure you hit some of the state/national parks (my favorites are zion and arches)
I really liked the windows in the dessert capturing the sky.
That was absolutely gorgeous. My todo list now includes getting a drone to take footage like you did over some of those salt flats. Seriously, that was amazing.
Excellent place to fly drones. The only hazards are birds (which is a real hazard)!
Came here because of The Anthropocene Reviewed. This video is so cool

This show is excellent.

Agree! Mark Olsen did all of the camera operating and editing for this (as he does for 95% of our videos), and really outdid himself here.
Wow!! Beautiful video! I also like the idea of art as one way of saying "we were here" everywhere.
The American west has been calling me for about a year, and this definitely added to that. Such otherworldly, beautiful landscapes.
I live here & love living here. This roadtrip is a summer bucket list item. It's a fascinating contrast between desert & mountains.
damn i love this channel
I hope one day I'm able to go on this trip.
I am from Box Elder County (Brigham City), and earlier this Summer, I visited the Spiral Jetty for the first time! It was really cool to see it featured on The Art Assignment and to learn more about the history. Thanks!

I live in Utah and wasn’t aware of a lot of these sites. They are now on my list to visit. Thank you for creating and sharing this!
Wow, it's all so beautiful. And it made me think of why the latest Star Wars movie was set on an abandoned salt mine.
We made the same comparison while there! No epic showdown, however.
I got chills, this was an amazing art trip.
This is simply amazing. I am in the process of writing an art history paper about the symbolism of the spiral, and it's been amazing to read about Smithson's process.

Bob Min point taken :)
The Art Assignment thanks!
Finally another art trip, these are always so good! Hope you guys do a Canadian art trip in the future :)
If we did, what should we see?

Sarah has a phenomenal narrating voice!
the salt room was really impressive
gosh, this video is freakin' fantastic.
Thank you for providing this video. I would love to travel to all these places and see these works but this is much better than any other alternative
It took me a while to finagle a way to get there. I believe in you. You'll make it happen some day.
Gorgeous video. Please never stop making these! I live in Portland at the moment and I am most definitely going to plan out a trip to see all of these. Thank you so much for the information!
Thank you for teaching me more about the state I live in.
this is a beautiful piece of art in form of an educational video
I thought the only interesting things in Utah were Spiral Jetty and the Sun Tunnels. I was wrong. Greetings from Argentina!!!!
I've lived near all these places and never visited. I will have to now. Thanks for great video!
Beautiful!
Great video! The Jetty is one of my favorite spots in northern Utah! Especially at sunset!
This is amazing.
Aaah this is one of my favorite places to learn about! I can't wait to go there one day.
the shots in this video were wow
This video is amazing. You need to come to Austin!
love this! I've been dying to watch things after the case for land art ❤❤❤

I always thought Wendover Production should visit Wendover, UT.
Please do an art trip to krakow especially the final exhibit of Schindler’s Factory
Mineralogy is gone, just went today. Not sure when it closed.
Oh no. Dang you work making me be late to an art assignment
Is the hidden installation still there?
Great video! I just dropped a video on my trip to Utah too! So many cool places to explore!
love it thanks :)
Shouts out to Wendover Productions!
WOW
Is this a reupload? I’ve feel like I’ve watched this Art Trip before
No way! Maybe you’re thinking Marfa?
The Art Assignment that’s it yeah, the sun tunnels reminded me of the rectangular concrete structures there
