""How would Niall Quinn know?" Mick McCarthy bemused at story of Irish team bus incident with Keane

- Niall Quinn did an interview with Tommy Martin last year and detailed a story of Mick McCarthy as #Ireland captain having a run in with #RoyKeane on the team bus. It was during the Jack Charlton years and Quinn described an angry #McCarthy giving it to the players as they arrived late on the bus following a heavy night out. Quinn gave a version of the one-liner Roy Keane came back with but after showing Mick McCarthy the footage, he was not impressed.

It's a shame that Micks contribution to the cause of Ireland in most people's eyes is the whole Saipan escapade.
Mick is a decent guy and a hardworking pro. a good servant to Ireland.
The fans were chanting 'one Keane in Ireland' by the end, they had washed their hands of Roy.
@@dubiouscaesar3709 is this true because a lot of sheep still adore Roy.
@@phuckweed that they do, but at the time there was a lot of positivity and appreciation of the performance Ireland put into that world cup, each player stood up and made themselves proud, Kinsella and Holland never looked lacking in the midfield for a start, yet Roy, the highest earner and the most decorated player had acted like an utter prima Donna over the training ground facilities, the other players were just happy to be there, determined to make the most of the opportunity. Robbie coming home with three goals to his name combined with Roy's departure helped create the chant.
"Pissed as a pickle" - Wonderful from Big Mick
Micks right it’s done and dusted forget it.
By all accounts, Mick is one of the most straight, honest and honourable people in football. It’s a shame he always has to comment on the poor behaviour of others.
My sentiments entirely.Well Said.A gentleman on and away from the field. He gave my beloved Ireland team everything he had as a player and manager.
Nailed it , certainly is . Class act and bullied out of the Irish job for the play off that time by the current 🤡
Mick was a snake, always has been always will be
Fair play to Mick for not commenting on this old story. Mick has proud Irish heritage and the majority of Irish fans would appreciate what he has done for us. I am also a massive Roy fan.
yeah Ivan...this in a nutshell...totally respect both men...isn't this just the 'Irish way' ☘
Hes english
Good old fashioned man's man . Well done mick. Always admired how he carried himself
Proper Barnsley
Mick is well liked and respected deserves to be
Mick McCarthy is right, it is the epitome of lazy journalism to keep asking him about the same incidents that have been discussed to death year after year, decade after decade. Mick McCarthy is a great manager with a long and varied career. He's managed lower league clubs to Premier league promotion, he's managed Premier league clubs, he's managed abroad and he's managed international teams to qualify for and play in major tournaments. Mick McCarthy deserves more respect.
Agree. Happened 20 years ago. Let’s move on.
He was involved in one of the biggest sporting incidents in Irish history. Of course he’s going to get asked. I was 22 when Saipan happened. We were knocked out by Spain and had Roy been there we may have gotten through. I’d be curious how old you were because if you are under 40 you don’t know the impact this had on Ireland.
@@themapleshamrock5284 how do you know we would have got through if Keane was there?
McCarthy doesn't want to talk about it because he knows he managed it badly... I'm not a Keane fan either btw.
Yeah but the biggest thing is ruining Irelands World Cup chances
Mick. Man of honour. Nice one
God bless big mick 🍀 hail hail
Mick McCarthy was our best ever Manager. We played our best football under him. As a Manager in England he won promotions with no money to buy players, and when Ipswich fired him because he missed promotion, they were relegated the following season. A Class act in both football, and real life. Deserves more respect than this gutter-trash journalism. Thanks Mick, you were there as Captain and Manager in the Glory days of Irish Football. True Irish supporters will always respect you, and thank you for that...and fuck the begrudgers.
100% agree with you.
@@seanmccabe468 Thanks Sean, and we're certainly not alone on this. 🇮🇪👍.
He was class at Wolves as well, proper bloke he is, have a lot of respect for Mick McCarthy.
When he came to us, we had no players and they gave him hardly any money, I think that brings out the best in him, he brought in players nobody else wanted and made them into a cracking side.
Top Man he is.
@@nickhamil8980 Spot On Nick, well said 👍.
Jack Charlton was on facts
Mick McCarthy was captain of an Irish team that got to the last 8 of a World Cup. Think about that. Coz it'll probably never happen again. Hope I'm wrong but let's be realistic. After being captain he rebuilt an aging team and got us to 2 playoffs and last 16 of World Cup (without our captain and best player BTW). With a bit more luck against Belgium and Turkey we'd have been at France 98 and Euro 2000. I'm from Cork and a United fan. Roy was my hero growing up. But I think its time we put Saipan to bed and remember Mick for what he did right for Irish football as opposed to constantly throwing Roy's name at him in interviews. Flogging a dead horse. He's plainly sick of it and frankly so am i. Thanks for the memories Mick.
Well said Sir!👏
I have always liked Mick, he is a no nonsense man.
Fair play to you Stephen, as a Cork man and a United fan to list off McCarthy's very worthy cv for Ireland, you are a rare breed.
But to trot out the line that talking about it is ''flogging a dead horse'' and that by ignoring it you are simply saving McCarthy from further intrusion. A neat side step indeed. Because it also ignores the truth that Keane was not only entirely to blame for the Saipan incident, but that his refusal to own up to his dishonesty has perpetuated the falsehood that McCarthy was in any way to blame.
Not that doing so now would make any difference to Keane's current career as rent-a-quote clown for ITV.
I concur with nearly all that you have written.
Do they even talk yet Mccarthy and Keane ??
@@mcharrisment4765 I doubt it. Keane is a strange character anyway.
Keane treated M McC with utter contempt that day. He called him for everything including I'm lead to believe a BB. But it's a long time ago.
Fucking hell still going on about it in all fairness Mccarthy was a quality manager for Ireland and Ireland did well at that world Cup without keane
Did a good job at Ipswich on a shoestring.
Well said Mick.a shame that The players and management hadn't the Guts to sort it out with Mick and Roy.
No....sort out Roy.
Top Class Mick as always So much respect for him as both a player and manager for Ireland What he may have lacked in ability He more than made up with in heart!!!!
Well said Mick, you can love both
Well done Mick---you did a great job at Sunderland an will always be welcomed back- you always behaved impeccably.
it's time people started to respect micks time as player and manager of Éire.
The interviewer tried to ambush Mick by raking up old controversies didn't get a lot of luck
I'm pretty sure he would have known these things would have been discussed beforehand
PATHETIC ATTEMPT AT JOURNALISM. GOOD MAN MICK
Roy Keane, alas, is so rude it's breathtaking. If a player at his beloved Utd had spoken to him like that when he was captain he would have been livid, but it's always right for him to do it. Arrogant man who mistakes aggression for "manliness".
Like Mick I was born in Barnsley with an Irish parent, I saw him make his debut in 1977 when he was 18, even then he was a giant of a man with a moustache that would put Tom Sellick to shame. Watched and loved him as a player, moved to Dublin in 1993 so was lucky enough to watch his side as a manager. Let’s face it no one came out of Saipan smelling of roses least of all the FAI, but Mick is right here in that it should be put to bed, we all know what happened there’s no point to keep going over it. I feel for Mick because it’s tarnished his legacy, he was within a shoot out of making another World Cup quarter final and built a new team from the ashes of Jack’s team and did it playing a good style of football.
I hope I’m wrong because I like Stephen Kenny but I fear it’s going to be a good few years before we reach the same level of competing.
The Best football ireland ever played was under Mick Mccarthy. This man deserves so.much respect
Are you having a laugh
without a doubt our best football was under Mick
@@niallhanrahan8102 the most attacking best football was under mick. We beat Holland and came out of group with portugal, and yes it was better football to watch than Jack Charlton, the actual football style was better
@@niallhanrahan8102 Recency bias there against Mick I would say. Go through the managers. In 2002 and the build up to the world Cup, ireland played better football than Jack, Trap, Staunton and even O Neil. Thats our recent football history. Jack was obviously more successful but not eventhe biggest fans of Charlton would say his football was easy on the eye. Kenny, we'll wait and see but it looks like he is on to something there. Mick did well for Ireland. Its not a stretch at all to say he got the best football out of us. Having more than a few players in their peak no doubted helped but he did elevate players too that weren't to the standard of Duff and the Keanes. It seems weirdly fashionable to shit on Mccarthy's contribution to Irish football.
Mick had our great last team. All downhill from there. Playing our best football is laughable. He still stuck to bringing on Niall Quinn and hoofing the ball up to him.
Sometimes it work out, sometimes it doesn't. You really can't put it any simpler than that.
Imagine been ask on to TV for an interview and to be shown a video of his ex players talking about an incidence that made Mike look like a fool of sorts is beyond me. What happens on tour should stay on tour. So much gossip!
100% agree but it only shows Quinn as an untrustworthy lousy story teller and say anything to look funny or popular!!! 🤨
Mick has always come across to me as a top person. He was a successful coach/manager and carrys himself with dignity and good humour.
Legend. Millwall Man.
Well done mick. If only all could see the bigger picture and do the best they could in any given situation
The football supporting public in Ireland are forever indebted to Mick McCarthy. After Jack left Mick started to get the team playing football on the ground. It was a slow process but he was changing things. He got the team to the World Cup in South Korea and Japan. They had a real chance, at the very least, of getting to the semi-final, perhaps even further! Despite the FA lI incompetencies Mick did an immense job. He rebuilt that team, introducing some new young players and adding a different attractive style of playing into the mix.
As a lifelong Manchester United (and Roy Keane) supporter I am quite happy to say that Roy Keane messed up that World Cup for Ireland. His inwardly focused self-absorbed conduct messed it up. Magnificent player that he was and magnificent job that he did at Sunderland aside, I’m not surprised that no other club will take a chance on him nowadays.
Spot on !
Roy Keane did a fair job at Sunderland but no more - he was handed a massive wad of cash, spent sone of it wisely, then spent a good amount more to stagnate. Compared to McCarthy getting promotion despite only having buttons to spend, he wasn’t exactly working miracles.
He then failed in his only other management job. Throw in his abrasive style and it’s not a shock that chairmen haven’t been lining up to employ him.
well handled Mick :)
i agree with a lot of the comments supporting Mick here. A lot of other people tend to be quite sycophantic about Roy Keane, lets be honest, he can be a right arrogant git
Usually cork people and Utd fans .
A class act.
Fair dues to Mick, he always gave 100%, Keane abandoned us.
Mick threw him under the bus. Sent him home because he didn't like Roy complaining about how bad things were in Saipan. The Niall Quinn story is true, heard that story years ago and Mick must of always had it in for Roy. All you guys backing a plastic paddy over one of your own is disgraceful. He's an Englishman who wasn't good enough to play for England and sent our best player home in a world cup because Keane shattered his ego.
@@david_fitzmaurice Keane called McCarthy an English c#nt. Does Keane look at his English born kids and think, c#nts?
@@david_fitzmaurice so it's funny when Roy acts unprofessionally while another player is being professional and tells them off for not having high standards. But when Roy gets all professional and complains about balls and pitches he's a legend. What if Mick just puffed a Cigar and said.."no balls Roy!?.... there's a champion sports.. round't corner! Piss off and buy some"
He was sent home, you're another clown who hasn't a clue, just get all your information from drunk Tom at the end of the bar who thinks he's an expert on everything
They both have 100 % actually
The media did the rest!
No Bull shit with Mick
Mick's a legend.
McCarthy really doesn’t like the Keane questions. Yet he keeps getting asked them
Well done Mick. Niall repeating private conversations and doing so at the expense of a former national teammate, decades after. Lounge speaker. Mick, you've carried dignity. Niall, gossip girl 🤣
Top man
Fair comment Mick!
Mick is an Irish legend
Old school class
Top man Mick, respect all the way , true professional
Good on you mick leeds fan to mot legend
Keane was a disgrace doing what he did that tournament.
Keane was a superb player. Shame he couldn't keep his ego in check.
Thats not journalism its the drip drip tittle tattle sensationalism.
Pissed as a pickle 🤣
Roy Keane struggled when not being coached by Ferguson. He got relegated at Forrest in his last season. Some players were just "Ferguson players."
The season Forest got relegated, Keane (at 21) was the supporter's player of the season and was named on the PFA Team of the Year. Not bad for a struggling player.
I liked McCarthy as a player , a manager and now as a decent human.I can never forgive Keano for Saipan and who knows what Ireland could have gone on to do in the World Cup2002 with Keane on board. Its a sad episode in Irish sport and the worst part is not knowing if Ireland could have exceeded their performance of Italia 1990.I believe the odds were with them to do that with Keano in there being his warrior self and being the great general he was at United.
I come from the same place in Ireland as Keane ,Cork, and that makes it hurt all the more! As far as I'm concerned McCarthy contributed , in no small way ,to some memorable performances by the Boys in Green.
All we can and should say is :"THANKS MICK"
PS --The other Keane , Robbie, always gave everything when he put on that green shirt .I played videos of his great international goals during the Covid lockdown here in America and I firmly believe it was that more than the vaccines ,that helped me stay Covid free to this day !!! THANKS ROBBIE !!!🇮🇪💚☘️
Fair play to him.
Keane is just "music hall" flotsam.
i didnt know roy had such a good sense of humour
Mick will be the first to admit he was well out of his depth in his first job - Millwall. However he had inherited Millwall's best ever squad & was given a lot of money to spend.
The decline was continuous but he survived 4 years until until Jackie Charlton resigned. Mick instantly went public & said he wanted the job. Once Joe Kinnear turned it down, no one else wanted to face the rebuilding process needed at Ireland & Mick had found his escape.
As for Millwall, the 5 year aftermath saw relegation, administration & 5 tough years in league 1. We had a Premiership wage bill & league 2 quality squad. Administrators had to work overtime to stop the club being shut down. It would have been a double relegation but league 1 teams gave us too much respect early on.
Keane said some time ago that this comeback never happened, and that (if I recall correctly) Tony Cascarino made it up.
So it probably wasn't untrue then, Mick?
Because by the sounds of it you either don't remember or don't want to remember.
Personal issues should be exactly that. Personal.
Quinn is a disgrace. Hanging out his former captain and manager on a sensitive issue just to get a few cheap laughs. Must have been a tough watch for Mick but as always he handled it well.
Roy Keane walked away.
Mick wasn't strong enough to stand up to the FAI in 2002. He and the FAI were culpable for sending officials and hangers on over there in Club Class and living like Kings while the most important people of all, the Irish players were overlooked. Sub standard training facilities a million miles form where the Competition was taking place, was simply unacceptable. Hopefully future Irish teams won't be flown out in economy and fed on cheese sandwiches now as a direct result of Keane holding the full glare of publicity on the FAI and sub-servant managers!
In that era Ireland had some amazing quality players, that we simply don't have now. Such a shame that poor management prevented us from finding out just how far we could have gone!!
I love that Mick McCarthy’s life is based around Roy Keane everywhere He goes it’s all about Roy Keane
VM sports no longer broadcasting
We are all tired of it move on
quinn two faced
Ah no, he just relayed an anecdote.
and too cowardly, as a striker, to take a penalty so let younger, more inexperienced players stand up (to their credit). "If there's a sixth penalty I'll take it" ... yeah right
Respect to Mike ther l
Niall wanting free publicity
Imagine having such poor character as a young man as to show such disrespect to the captain if the national team you had been called into. No wonder he continues to lie about his 'knee injury' to this day.
People love to bash Mick.took us so far in world cup.All Praise for Stephen Kenny ???
Well said, mick has been pilloried for years by certain individuals in the Irish media and it just isn't fair.
If he had the record Stephen Kenny (who is the next best thing to useless) can you imagine the castigation he would of faced.

McCarthy is a far better man than Keane was or will ever be
Ya, his trophy cabinet proves it
@@thehairysnot8069 well that makes no sense
If Mick dosn want to talk about Roy and that world cup , best not give these type of interviews . I'd be interested in his views on it like looking back would he have done anything different
Keane and McCarthy are both prickly characters.
Does it matter really
can we please move on.
It's a strange thing being of Irish decent when your born and raised in 'enemy' territory -
Mick and Keane just didn't get along.....
Nothing wrong with that but when it's public information and one's the boss of the other and the other (Keane) such a professional , that the FAI had become a single target in Mick with the personality clash adding to the situation that became keano against the rest!!!
I believe Mick and Keane are actually very proud, strong willed characters and stand their ground/stubborn therefore easy lickings for the media hence this virgin media numpty trying to get Mick say something negative/dislike about Keane from as far back as 92 to create more drama.
Not everyone in a team sport gets along , grow up people
Get over it never known bunch of grown men to waffle about things that happened years ago. Also if it did happen Mick is correct to tell them off.
This is what happens when an English man plaus and managers and different country
Roy Keane is like a Kevin Petersen....just fucking make it work! Maybe take a course in man-management..... If you are Ireland, leaving out your only world class player...well just start packing your bags
