Real glad someone had the sense to bring the show back for a run all those years later. And real glad they had heart enough not to try to recast Columbo for a modern audience.
Don't get me wrong, I would love to see someone do a new version in the STYLE of Columbo for the 2020s, but make it its own thing. There is only one Columbo.
@@pablohanceh that's not that bad, i mean looks wise it's pretty close, he may need to pack on a few pounds but they do look similar, but idk if mark ruffalo has that capacity to seem sympathetic, comforting and outwardly intimidating and aggressive at the same time, frankly i don't think i've seen an actor do it the way this one does ever, ig if they really needed to reboot it mark ruffalos not a bad pick
The final scene of the final episode really is a masterpiece. Just the whole scene and all of its composition. It's so clever to have the extras constantly moving out of the way of Columbo to hold the continuous shot. Brilliant.
The only thing the extras got a bit wrong is that they start looking pointedly at the fish before Columbo has started talking about them, and they couldn't have known it would be the focus of the investigation ahead of time, even if he did start walking towards them, they're part of the ground.
I love how at the end Columbo just walks away and out, and like the directors wanted for the original Columbo, he is like a myth that appears and disappears.
This is my favorite episode. The way Jack Cassidy trys to get away with his crime. I'm glad also that they didn't decide to replace Columbo for today's audience. It's fantastic!
At the very end Columbo once again uses the expertise of a relative. I have lost count how many times his wife, brother-in-law, niece, or nephew have helped him solve a case, either directly with information or inadvertently by saying something that sparked an idea that put Columbo on the right track. It is fitting to use it in the final scene of the final show.
@@VinceBlack536 It is interesting that in the one episode where he has a framed picture of his wife on a table, it turns out not to be his wife, so we never saw her in the entire series.
Well it certainly helps when you can just walk in the room and immediately spot the killer. Then just haunt them wherever they go until that one piece of crucial evidence turns up without them at least consulting a lawyer.
Wow. Columbo has lasted 10 seasons and still regarded as one of the best Crime & Detective shows of all time. Also, Columbo's last case in the last episode was not his last as there was a planned 40th Anniversary special episode of Columbo but due of TV scheduling conflicts as well as Columbo's actor Peter Falk is already diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease that he is no longer recognized the character he played, it sadly never happened until he passed away in 2011. R.I.P. to Peter Falk. ♥️
@@novawolf_gaming Nothing technical about it and they weren't pilots but TV made movies just like all the later Columbo shows. The Columbo character IS the Columbo we know with all his familiar trademarks and arguably the first Columbo is the best one ever.
@@johnb4905 Its referred to as the Pilot Online, I'm talking about the one from 1968, if you watch it, its not the same Columbo, he acts more like a professional detective rather than... well Columbo
What's interesting is the Columbo goes out on top using literally state of the art tech to catch the killer. However, the technology was only useful because he had figured out where the body was buried.
Saw the first one, but never saw the last Columbo. Thanks. It was a great show. The first one to show you the crime at the beginning, so you could watch him stalk the perpetrator and pounce on him at the end.
I remember seeing the final episode and instantly recognised how modern it was compared to the 70s and 80s episodes. The most striking thing is the murders in the older episodes have that 70s quality of actors mildly exaggerating the deaths, very quick and absolutely no sign of injury or blood. Very much censored you could call it. The last episode on the contrary was incredibly violent in comparison, even taking multiple attempts to kill the victim.
You can really see the evolution in television between these two scenes. More camera movements, variations in loudness and consistency, and the writing (though I'm not sure that really counts, it *has* been 10 seasons and near 30 years.)
Ten seasons, 69 episodes. From 1968 (two TV pilots), then a regular season in 1971. Last season in 1990. Peter Falk, beloved actor, won five Primetime Emmys.

As a kid this was one of mine and my mom's favorite shows to watch, and we'd always try to solve the case before Columbo did. Great memories. RIP Peter Falk, you will always be a legend.
What is it about this damn show? I have seen every episode hundreds of times and yet every time it comes on TV my world has to stop and I have to watch. Maybe it's the peerless writing, maybe it's the "howcatchem" twist, maybe it's just the magnificent Peter Falk. Whatever it is, it will never be bettered.

It's funny that Matthew Rhys who played the bar owner/perpetrator of Columbo's last episode, would go on to play a detective/lawyer, Perry Mason in the titular HBO series based of Erle Stanley Gardner novels of the same name.

It was a real tragedy when actress Barbara Colby (Mrs. LaSanka) and a friend were killed by a drive-by shooter while leaving an acting class; the perp was never caught. One wonders if God takes coffee breaks when things like that happen.
@@missladyanonymity Hmmm - something to think about. If it was the same friend, it didn't do him/her much good in the end, did it??? Sad that the killer of Bob Crane (of Hogan's Heroes fame) was never caught either.
I wonder too, sometimes. I think the most difficult part about believing in any deity is accepting the idea that He sees the whole picture, and even the most horrible and tragic events have reasons for occurring, even if we can't understand them. The first pilot was a psychiatrist killing his wife. Then there was a second pilot three years later about a female attorney murdering her husband and faking his kidnapping to get her hands on the ransom money. The first official episode was this one here.
In that episode with the food critic, I particularly enjoyed person who was learning the business. He spoke & acted just as the Italian restaurant owners & waiters do here.
Yeah, but there's no way a dude could rip up an in-ground fish-tank, bury a body, replace the tank with a smaller one, then re-stock it with the number of fish that meets some law a club owner would have no way of knowing about. And then a detective just randomly counting fish in tanks. Just one more thing... The dude could have just dug the pit deeper and used the same tank and same number of fish and it would be way less bother.
To be honest, in the first episode when he killed the witness it was kind of a relief to me. I mean she was really annoying , and she definetely would have gone on blackmailing him
