Now, even though Jason Aldean has seen much success from the song, Tim McGraw, has expressed concern with artists facing "consequences" over their choice of song. No it's not perfect for small towns. I was raised in a small town. Nobody in a small town is actually like that. 98% of small town folks turn the other cheek. The closest thing I seen to a fight in a small town is when a gay kid came to my school and someone jumped on his back while he was walking. Other then that fights didn't happen. On the surface, the two songs seem similar. The difference is Toby's song unites ALL Americans against a common foe. If I remember correctly, Canada had an issue with it. On the other hand, Jason's song/video hints at pitting Americans against Americans. And if a person is sensitive to political dog whistles, the undertones would appear to cast black Americans, in particular, as the enemy. I would present as my evidence: The history of the courthouse, the use of only riot footage precipitated by police misconduct against black citizens, and the "peaceful" images only displaying white country folk. There are peaceful, black country folk, too, living in my integrated small town. We work together, pray together, and live together as a community...or at least, we used to.
On the surface, Jason's song and video are artistic and wonderful, in my opinion. I like them. To be perfectly clear: The song is NOT racist. The video is NOT racist. However, my fear is, some people will read into the song as a call back to the times of Sundown Towns, vigilante justice, and Jim Crow, all for the sake of keeping our rural lives "safe." And to me, that isn't right. But I will play the song for the reasons *I Believe* Jason intended.

The song is ironic, I live not far from the town Jason grew up in. Crime is running rampant and people are getting shot almost daily there. People need to get it together and support each other, not commit crimes against each other. I see nothing wrong with the song, but I do wish Macon could become a safer place to live.

I was listening to it on my way to town the other day (for about the millionth time) and it finally hit me what the “problem” is. The people who listen to it with a preconceived notion that it’s about attacking people based on race hear the part of “Grandads gun” and saying one day they’re gonna round up, etc and they think he’s saying people are gonna round up and those of us in small towns won’t let PEOPLE gather when he’s actually talking about the govt is gonna round up our guns and that won’t fly in the city. They gotta think about it in more than one stance but they would rather throw politics at it. And mostly because Jason has never hid his beliefs from anyone which is sadly what certain people want us to do.

I don't know how or why anyone would consider this song by Jason to be racist or any thing else some people are condemning it to be. I come from a small town, and his song simply speaks the truth. When there were problems, caused by anyone of any gender, race, religion or nationality, it usually got taken care of before it got out of hand. Most times law enforcement wasn't required.

If it's one thing I've learned from observation and experience, is that there are plenty of idiots out there who will continue to be idiots regardless of what information you put in front of them. I like Tim's answer because it gets to the heart of the matter, which is free speech. If Tim were to give a favorable opinion of the song, all that would manage to do in my opinion, is rally up Jason's base, who are already on his side to begin with, and piss off those who are offended by the song. This way, Tim's answer reminds everyone that regardless of what anyone thinks of the song, Jason has the freedom given to us by the Constitution to sing about whatever he wants. If people don't like it, too bad. Something my mentor taught me, is that whenever someone asks you a question or accuses you of something, always consider what might be behind the question or accusation to see if you can find out what's really going on. Whenever someone asks a question or makes an accusation, there is a motive behind it. The question is whether or not the motivation is honest. Often people are dishonest, and they will disguise a question or accusation to cover up what they really think or feel in an effort to trap you so that they can use you to justify their position. Tim's answer greatly diminishes that possibility. Obviously people will still make assumptions about Tim's answer, but I think it's the best kind of answer that could have been given. No matter what opinion Tim would have given about the song, it wouldn't have changed anything. Tim may be famous, but his opinion wouldn't be enough to sway anything. At least with the answer he gave, there was hope that some people might be reminded about the freedom we're supposed to have as artists, and move on with their lives.

I haven't listened to the song, but I have read the lyrics and I didn't see anything racially provocative nor otherwise " insensitive " in them. What I did see is a song that sheds a given perspective on some disrespectful behaviors and calls those who engage in them out for that.
