Glad to see you doing this. I’ve got one piece of folder. I haven’t even tried to do anything with because I’m just not sure. So I appreciate the help with this video.
It can be tricky for sure and is a tad different but like all the others once you get it everything seems so easy. Just takes a bit of a go with a low quality piece and you will pick it up super fast.
That’s a beautiful piece. I love the boulder opals. It might be cheaper material and make a bulky pendant but it looks great. I hope you post some of your completed pieces.
Good luck. If you run into issues just leave a fresh comment and I should see it. Replies get lost. Even mini channels can't keep up with all the replies but new comments flag.
Hi Roy. Boulder!!!😁😁❤️. Yipee!! Beautiful! Never expect that from me, would you?😂. It's gorgeous, Roy. You know that I'm a glutton for boulder. Sounds strange, but I like the back as well.😊. Have a great day everyone. Thanks Roy.
Awesome! Really appreciate your insight into this material. I love the look of this boulder opal, but it is such a different animal from solid opal. Has it's own learning curve. I get a pretty good polish by working up to 3000 on my cabbing machine and then going with 8000, 14000, and 50000 nova points. I haven't used alumina yet, but will give it a try. Down side... it's difficult to find reasonably priced rough. Prices are all over the place. In the end, looks like I have to keep price per finished stone to $20 USD or less in order to make money (taking into account cost of my time for cuttin/setting). This assumes a finished stone in the range of roughly 5g.
For this material I have found it best to buy it by the bucket. I do big stock ups once every few years. Buying smaller parcels or individual stones is okay but I find that it is a bit pricey and if you were looking to make money it is a tough ask unless you can set it yourself.
I bet the back will be as amazing as the front. Make the bezel a bit too high and take a piece of 1x1mm wire that you shape to fit perfect inside it. Solder it along the bottom and you'll get a nice open back 🙂
Thanks so much for this video! I have some little pieces of rough Koroit and I didn’t know how to approach it so thanks very much indeed! Were you ever able to find a way to cut and polish the mezezo opal? I haven’t been successful with that yet myself.
Have a go with the Koroit it really isnt scary at all. I havent gone through the cutting and polishing of the mezezo yet. I kinda just have a box of it sitting on the floor... I should look at it again.
Found some rainbow type flashes on the surface of the stone but not visible without a torch and the right angle. Should i go down a later? Bit confused about next steps and dont want to ruin the colours of the rainbow on these weighty boulder rough opals
If it is a very small amount of colour at least you know it is not super expensive material so you could play with it a bit. Its always tough to tell without seeing the stone though.
Nah I was going to a while back but I'm too embarrassed at how they look. Very ghetto and I havent been able to sandblast and powder coat them like I planned. Maybe I just zoom in so no one can see the body.
Do you prefer those sandpaper burrs over novas for boulder? I just feel so bad whenever I use novas on boulder cause its expensive to just let them be eaten, and tricky to get them, so then I just avoid finishing any boulder, which is slso sad, it just staying rough. Also, I was once recommended those pink corund-burrs for boulder, have you tried it?
I actually do secretly like to use the sandpaper rolls for all Yowah/Koroit material. They are not permanently damaged, get a good shine but do require a layer or two of each grit on the larger stones. Never tried the pinks... I dont really see it working well but I could try it.
Nice stone, I just cant love boulder opal for what ever reason. I think its because its not a solid opal and has iron stone running through it, but this one was a nice piece. 2x👍
Das zu erwartende Stück wird nicht größer als ein 50 Cent Stück sein , denn es muss ein Dom geschliffen werden , sonst ist der Stein nur schwer zu fassen . 😊
I love the patterns on Boulder, every piece is unique and busy.
Sometimes even the potch makes cool patterns and I polish them up!
I really enjoyed this video... I love the koroit opal.. it's amazing. The information is priceless... Thank you for sharing
It would be my top 3 field of opal for sure. Even the "rubbish" stuff I like half the time.
Its definitely a wonderful piece to practice on can't wait to see the final piece
Hopefully turns out great.
Thanks for an informative video on a non-straightforward kind of opal. It's a very attractive piece and can't wait to see it set in silver.
These sure can be tricky but people underestimate how well they can turn out.
@@RoysRocks definitely, it looks great!
Awesome Roy, cheers for doing this video. That mudstone is a bugger
It sure can be. A bit of a mess but great fun when you get a stone that behaves.
Glad to see you doing this. I’ve got one piece of folder. I haven’t even tried to do anything with because I’m just not sure. So I appreciate the help with this video.
Well hopefully this gives you an idea of how to get it done.
Love koroit matrix, beautiful material and great job Roy.
I need to get myself a lot more of it. I'd be happy to cut and polish Koroit forever.
Beautiful Roy. The setting idea sounds perfect for it. Good luck!!
Its gunna be a big one... statement piece I think they call it.
Well done..
A original ugly stone to a beautiful Boulder Opal.
Cheers Famo59 🍻⛏️
Gotta love getting nice gems out of the good old mudstone.
VERY NICE, that's one big stone. Great job. Thanks again for your great advice
Yeah it was tough to fit on the macro lens I had to bring the camera way back.
THANK YOU for sharing this. I always feel a bit shy when it comes to polishing this kind of material.
It can be tricky for sure and is a tad different but like all the others once you get it everything seems so easy.

@RoysRocks Thanks for the encouragement!

Completed and the process of completing as embarrassing as it may be due to lack of skills.
Just bought some so gonna use this video as my training, thanks!

Heck yeah, awesome material to work with 😍😍😍
It really is. A bit muddy but super satisfying.
Thanks for the video Roy.
No worries Chad. I'll keep it up.
A beautiful piece, and some good tips. Hopefully you can share your final product once it’s been set. 😊
Hopefully I can share the whole process of setting it as well as the final piece.
Rad stone! Will make a nice pendant. I look forward to cutting some koroit material soonish. Still dabbling with other types before moving on.
It is pretty fun once you get the hang of it. Bit frustrating at first but worth getting good at.

The back is good. I might do a flat lap video on flattening it out and finishing it up.
So lovely!!|
It is great material.

@RoysRocks Definitely setting it myself. Any suggestions for places where I can buy a bucket of good material? I'm in the US, which is a disadvantage.
nice stone man
Thanks, always good when they play ball.

I was just going to do the saw method with the back plate. I can take a big piece out and use it for the back of a setting on a smaller stone.
And don't forget the joy of "why does everything smell of iron ore" that comes afterwards
I don't get much smell from it but I do get the fake tan speckles for the next day or so.
@@RoysRocks I think you can say there a fashion statement nowadays

Hi Roy, What are your thoughts on using a good quality resin to seal the boulder opal, especially if there is sand present between the colour?
Can be done (and has been done many times). Honestly its not a huge problem unless it is not disclosed and is being used to scam.
Any flat lap vids boss?? 😊

You can get full faced Boulder opal though not typically from yowah/koroit unless it is a solid filled nut.
