    I lost one of my girls recently, similar symptoms but not as bad. She couldn’t hold food or eat hard stuff, wanted to lay in a corner. My vet gave anti-inflammatory and antibiotics which had a slight improvement but after the course of medication I put her to sleep. Having lost 3 this year, the other two due to mammory tumours, I felt I shouldn’t continue with rats. I had one left from my group of 4. She needed a friend or re-homing so I’ve organised a friend of similar age. It will give me time to think about keeping them.
    Thanks for all your vids, they help no end.

    Sad to hear he didn't make it. One of my females got a stroke when she was about 1 year old and recovered without any visible defects and lived to a little over 2 years. This video is so important and I am so glad you uploaded it.

    I’m so sorry for your loss :(
    My 3,5 years old boy had a stroke a year ago and was not in the greatest shape. He would roll on himself and had no balance, was very week and had a severve head tilt. He’s been on a drug called Karsivan here in Germany since then, the active substance is Propentofylline ( I think the drug is called Vitofyllin in the UK ) and he is doing great now. As you mentioned, he has to take the drug for the rest of his life. My vet suggested it to me, she has 25 years of experience with rats and that really did wonders. He’s still a little weak on his left side but it’s almost unnoticeable and the head tilt completely disappeared!

      This shins like it helps prevent reoccurrence which is good (we also have vivotonin which is the same stuff just different brand name), though it’s only useful where your rat has a decently high quality of life after recovery from the stroke which sadly wasn’t the case with Eclipse, though definitely sounds like it was with your lad.

    Sorry for your loss. Everyone is losing rats right now which is odd. You, emi, several people in my groups, even myself. Lost my 3yr old Raquitta last week. Also your rat room, its different. I really hope all is ok in your life and that you are safe.

    Sorry for your loss. I’m glad you posted this. My boy Silver is a bit over a year old and I found him hunkered in his favorite basket last night all weak and floppy with the tilt. I had lost my oldest rescue boy 3 days earlier to a stroke and found him at the bottom of their cage. It has been 110 degrees all week here and I have been trying my best to keep their room in the low 80’s but I think the heat got to them both. All my other boys are doing just fine. Very eerie how well timed this video posted for me. I’m hoping the vet can help. He is eating again and trying to hold himself up on the edge of his 1 story cage.

    Im sorry for you loosing your rat babies (as I always call them), I wanted to say I really enjoy your channel ans actually wasn't aware about these much. I've been informed a lot and started watching a while before i got rats. I watched your video to help when my rat was choking and now that I have to give my one boy anti biotics.
    I wanted to say I'm glad too see you, even under some sad circumstances, because I like your videos and rhey bring some ease into my life with rats.
    I've also gotten a few replies from you, which I always appreciate. So, thank for all the information and happiness you bring with you videos. Having shared some of your personal experience, it feels much better than just reading things from different people. It's a lot easier to understand as well since you clearly care for all your animals ❤

    I don't know why I didn't see this video months ago when you posted it, but whatever the reason, it doesn't matter. First, I am so sorry for the loss of Eclipse and his brother. It must be hard for you to take videos of your rats when they're struggling with health issues, but it helps your audience to physically see what's happening. Second, I am so happy to see you're back to posting videos! Even if they are sad. I was thinking just the other day that I would have to go back through your 12 days of enrichment from years past for inspiration to do something different for my rats.

    I'm so sorry for your loss. I am a new rat mom and I'm terrified of something going wrong with my boys. I'm a pretty emotional person and am so attached all my fur babies (dogs included). What would you suggest in terms of prevention and keeping them as healthy as possible? Anything i can include in their daily routine and diet? I have nearly watched all your videos on the quest to learn everything about rats haha but just need a bit of advice on how to handle a situation where they do get sick and me springing into correct and swift action rather than being held back by emotion. Sending so much love and a big hug!

    • @IsamuRatCare
      @IsamuRatCare  3 роки тому +1

      Probably the key things to keep them as healthy as possible is feed a good diet, make sure they are not overweight, give plenty of enrichment and keep in a rat safe environment. Sadly they will get ill at some point, all rats die off something and all we can do is support them and give them the best life possible up to that point.
      However in terms of spotting stuff early regular weighing (weekly or monthly) can be useful as can regular health checks

    I'm sorry to hear about eclipse :(
    Just wondering if I could get some help on one of my rats, I've done some research but I haven't really been able to find anything too helpful out ... One of my ratties (female, Dumbo, light brown with white underbelly) has got some hair thinning bellow her eyes and on the top of her nose... The hair surrounding is light brown and the two patches on either side of her face are slightly skin coloured... Do you think this could be due to excess protein in the diet? They're around 5 months old now and they had a high protein diet (in treats) should I reduce their protein intake or do they still need a higher protein diet

    Hi Isamu, i wonder if you could give me some advice. I’m really desperate. I’ve recently introduced a group of new rats(4) into my existing group (3) and all of them seem to get along well but one of them is being a bully and I saw 2 bite marks on the other ones. And I mean literal marks and skin missing. What do I do. The ‘bully’ one comes from my original crew. There seem to be no alpha in the mix. I tried researching on the internet with no avail

    So this is not a stroke question, I'm sorry for your baby there and you. It's very heartbreaking. I was curious what is it that rats are doing or going through when they wake up, they look like they're having hiccups so to speak, every time they wake up? That's best way I can describe it. What is this?

  • @Meowmeowwws
    @Meowmeowwws 3 роки тому +1

    Hello, can I get some advice? One of my rats just died (had zero symptoms this day and to my knowledge was perfectly healthy, no tumors, and no injuries), and I'm not sure if it was a stroke. I'd prefer to confirm the cause of death in case it's contagious. In her last moments she was breathing heavily (a bit like a rat with a respiratory infection) and she went fully limp, then passed away. I've never had a rat die like this before and I'm sure it wasn't her time (she was 1 y/o). I looked at other videos but nothing seemed quite like it, and stroke seems the closest to what happend (she also looked very vacant during her last minute or two)
    I'd appreciate anything, I tried to look for advice on google but all that pops up are either articles related to humans or generic "rat illness" ones

    The exact same thing just happened to my rat. It was very sudden. She was fine and then suddenly she was very lethargic, floppy, cold, kept falling over, and wasn't eating. I took her to the vet today and she had a seizure in the vet's office. The vet said it was best to put her down, so I made the decision to do that rather than make her suffer.😢😢😢

    My older rat is kind of slow and floppy lately, but he also has an ear infection. (no head tilt) Do you think it’s only caused by the ear infection or something worse. He is like a little doll sometimes, just lets you pick him up and hold him without squirming.

    I have a rat named Bubbles, the poor girl, who has gone through A LOT.
    We got her from a wildlife centre with her sister, Buttercup, and her mum, Blossom. (Yes the Powerpuff girls). She was such an energetic little rattie, and we love her to bits. Buttercup, her sister, came to our home with a horrible rat illness similar to a cold- but much worse. Buttercup was a small rat, and unfortunately, she didn't make it. She died in my arms.
    Bubbles and Blossom were inseparable because of that. Bubbles being the energetic, cheeky one, and Blossom being the most protective mother ever. (May I note, Blossom isn't her actual mother, but has the mum role). I was taking little Bubbles out of her cage once when I noticed her head was tipping sideways. I rushed to where we were letting the ratties wander and tried her out on it. She immediately started to roll over and was incredibly off balance. My dad took her to the vets and got her a prescription for an Inner ear infection. She was on that for a while, but nothing worked. We just started to just 'not' give her them and she seemed to get a bit better. Her head is still tilted now, but she's fine. We then researched and found out that she had had a stroke. A few months later (now), and Blossom has a tumor. Also, one of our ratties, Diamonde, is very thin and weak. I suspect she is dying.
    Thank you for reading this, I hope Diamonde gets better soon.

    Hi, I am very very happy that I found your channel through Emiology. I am looking to buy 2 rats, massive desire, and I want them to be as happy as possible. I think you make fantastic videos, and you have a lot of knowlage. I tried to look on the breeders list, but I couldn't really find anyone near to Liverpool. ( I unfortunatly don't drive and I don't want to drag the babies across the country on a 5 hours train trip in a carrybox.) Do you know any breeders who is nerby, or could help me to bring them if I pay for the patrol? I would be very very thankful if you would be able to reply and I'm sorry for bothering you with this. You have Kaiju nearby on Appley Bridge and probably your closest though I don’t think she drives. I will say that rats travel excellently via public transport, and as long as they’ve got a secure carrier with a water source (eg cucumber) and some food they will be happy, far less stress than we might feel
