It's been the best scanner I've had since my AOR AR8000 died. It'll take a little getting used to the commands and features, but you play with it in your hands you'll find it quite intuitive. While you do NOT need a HAM license to own a scanner, some states such as Florida, require that you have your HAM license to use the scanner in a vehicle.

I received my permit
i have several digital trunking scanners, and used them when i worked at a private ambulance. we did a lot of 911 calls for the city i worked in, as they had limited medic units, and a big call volume. was nice to hear the FD dispatch, and know when we were gonna go assist them. they are a great investment, and well worth the price.

Peter Knobloch Bearcat BCD396t, BCD396XT, BCD996T, and BCD996P2, all programmed by hand.
I've had mine for over three years and really like the options with this model. I bought the upgrades ProVoice and DMR Mototrbo just in case.
Also NXDN.
Waste of so much money. The updates on whistler are free and the scanners also have better sensitivity.
Great video! Police scanners are definitely a must-have if you are into the prepared mind of set. When stuff happens we want to be the first to know instead of waiting minutes for the news to report on it, not to mention the media tends to get the story wrong for the first 15, 30 minutes living in New York City I can definitely say my scanner has helped me out a lot in the past few years. Also if you do not feel like carrying around your handheld scanner there are plenty of apps on smart phone that you can download
Its been 5 years but could you tell me some examples of emergencies it has helped you with? Im looking to get one.
back when everything was v h f U H F I had are locial tv news dept so I know where all are reporters where I even had the mike channels to the camera to hear the desk to q the reporter

I moved from Indiana to Florida rendering my RadioShack PRO-106 pretty much useless as the systems are different down here. I ended up buying the Uniden Bearcat BCD456HP and I’m loving it!
What do you think is better ? The BCD 436 or the Whistler TRX-1 ? Are they about the same ? Thanks ;.
Thinking about getting this scanner for railfanning. I currently have the bc12at & I kinda want something taller & skinnier. I’ve heard many great things about this scanner & I can’t wait to get it!
I love mine. I also got the DMR update. It's well worth the money. The phone apps are useless in comparison and in an emergency when phones are log jammed that thing won't be.
Scanners are way better than apps.
@@robertsaberniak007 what the heck do you think the apps use in the first place?! They all just mirror the broadcastify/radioreference feeds. That said though it is better to have one you’re in control of. People on radioreference often scan too many channels at once for their feed so you can never hear follow anything happening. There was one software application I used to use I forgot what it was called but it let you remotely control other peoples scanners.
Excellent choice in a scanner. I have the BCD536HP in a rack mount with my other comms gear. With a discone antenna mounted on my roof I can pick up agencies 20-25 miles away. Most agencies in my area have gone to trunked systems and P25 phase 1 and 2. Add a Tecsun PL-660 or PL-880 with SSB capabilities and a random wire antenna. You will be able to cover HF frequencies and listen to ham radio operators as well as commercial shortwave stations.
it's crap. Poor receiver even with a good antenna. Get Whistler TRX-1 if you need DMR and NXDN digital otherwise just the Whistler WS1040. Get a Sony ICF-SW7600GR instead of tecsun junk too. Better yet don't waste money with shortwave at all. Scanner better.
Kandi Klover all the reviews I see are critical of the Whistler TRX-1 due to difficulty of programming and poor to no customer service. What specifically makes the Whistler better?
I use mine because I live in a severe weather prone area. They come in handy.
Does this also do LB (Low Band) analog. I need it because we dispatch on 33.8000mhz

I’m considering getting one. Here in PA all the counties around me except for mine has already gone digital to either the P25 system or something similar. State police using open sky so I’m not going to be able to listen
digital and analog. vhf and uhf are frequency bands, digital or analog are the type of signals transmitted on the frequencies. kind of like vhf and uhf are the type of paper and digital or analog are like cursive or braille.
and many Agency are migrating from Analog Mode to Digital so that means there will be some overlap given as the Agency will operate in Mixed Mode .
You have misspoke a little bit you say it as if digital is a band of frequencies and that’s incorrect it breaks down like this you have Analog UHF/VHF frequencies and you have Digital UHF/VHF frequencies. That scanner you have there picks up both Analog and Digital so old and new radio plus decides P25 phase one and two which is what most law enforcement uses nowadays. Apart from that great video.

Very cool looking radio. You say you can't transmit, is that because your not certified? Or is this unit a listen only in the digital format?
Scanners don't have the ability to transmit. They are receive only.
He does not possess a ham license therefore he can't transmit. Also, thos device is only a listener. You cant transmit on this device.

Thanks, being with FP and USCG I have been looking for a good digital HH scanner so I don't have to carry the heavy HT while working in the yard. Our HT's allow us to take with FD, PD., and all Stocs but again they are heavy to carry while hanging around the house.
look at what your area uses for encryption for the police and other emergency services because I have to get a more expensive one because locally where I live the police and emergency services use the first level of the trunk system
Soon it wont matter to buy a Digital Scanner as Public Safety, Police, Security will start using the Advanced NXDN Digital Radios. the iDAS system by ICOM has a Built in Digital Scrambler and can operate in a Internet Connected environment. but many services still use Coventional, Trunking and Digital Mixed Modes during this ERA of Analog to Digital Migration.

I've been into Scanners since I was a kid. I just turned 50 so I remember my first scanner from Radio Shack (Realistic Pro-26) had 4 channels and you needed that specific frequency crystal to pop in for whatever channel you needed. The tech has gotten insane in the last 30+ years. I like listening to fire and EMS definitely but detest wasting my time listening to law enforcement!
A comment you made about cops talking more liberally on digital, that was true! If cops had their way, they'd happily switch to digital encryption for which they alone would have access to!
Isn't it funny how all these guys work in public safety, they work for the public whose taxpayer funds pay them and ems and fire have no issues with transparency, whilst law enforcement claim they are transparent but need encryption for their safety! Uh huh...
It's for their safety, yah that's it, it's not about saying revolting stuff on their Radios hoping we the public don't overhear them.

I live in Los Angeles and though we may be digital, 99% of LAPD's system isn't encrypted, even though they wanted it to be.
My personal opinion is that fire & ems work in legit public safety jobs and full respect to those two actual public safety professions.
As regards those who scream privacy and encryption, what are they trying to hide?
Excellent video, I really like the hands on demonstrations. How would this compare to say a BaoFeng for those of us on a limited budget?
The one will do the digital network. The BaoFeng will do UHF and VHF. I am a number of BaoFeng I use for scanners.
don't get a BF. they are crap. ICOM has the R-6 Sport Communications Receiver that is comparable in price with Uniden and Whistler entry level scanners.
How often do you have to update the freqs?
Check radio reference for frequency updates.

how many hours do the batteries last in this one?
I got about 8 hrs but carried a back up st for the long hall if the fire went into overtime

the apps require someone to use this, or a scanner similar to this, plugged into a computer to broadcast over the apps. any power outage or something similar, like a network being down, and the apps wont work.
correct, but only to listen directly to it. the scanner is plugged into the computer using the headphone plug on the scanner, and microphone plug on the computer. the feed is then broadcast using any various websites, the most common being radioreference and broadcastify. knock out internet, or the scanner, and the feed wont work on the apps.

Kandi Klover I use to own a trx 1 and trx 2 as well as a ws 1088 and they’re all shit, don’t waste your money on a whistler radio trust me I’ve been there and done that. Whistler radios sound bad , audio quality is so compromised, audio drops out when searching bands, can’t change radio with batteries in radio, you have to take them out to charge. Uniden radios sound good, good audio quality, very stable never crashes, easy firmware updgrades and more

Yeah. You need the cable and Butel software or Uniden. Butel is a good program.
I have the previous version of this scanner, and I’m in the same situation. They changed and updated all the frequencies and talk groups in my area, and the radio is not easy to program without plugging it into the computer.

Than you program it in as a trunked system.
This radio will work with trunked frequencies. It will be P25.
My police are on p25 phase 2 none encrypted starcom. Now my county sheriff's is on phase 2 p21 starcom 25 not p25 like my police.now another police by me are on p21 phase 1 starcom25 none encrypted.the county bext to is on p21 phase 2 encrypted so no scanner will pick them up.
Joshua Bibler Exactly, most EMR and majority of Police will be encrypted so these are useless. Depends on which Country and State your in.

NY, you better just be careful with one ANYWAY,, IN You must have a HAM ticket, KY risky even with a HAM ticket. Check your state laws. And now thes rock even more as thy have EDACS ProVOICE, DMR, and NXDN upgrades! *For a fee*

I’d seen this on another review and that guy obviously put some effort into his video, as did you. Thought it was shitty enough to do something about it so yeah.
These new scanners are great but what I HATE about ALL digital modes is the wuffy sound of the audio. Unlike analog, DMR voices sound like people are talking with a mouth full of marshmallows! The city I worked for as a volunteer went to Harris OpenSky and the audio quality was HORRIBLE! If you use the radios 8 hours a day 5 days a week you get used to it but once or twice week it takes awhile to train your brain to understand muffled speech. Howf fwood fwoo wike foo whissen fwoo whiss allf dway? Now hams are using digital modes more and more. System Fusion and D-Star sound just as bad!
NXDN, P25, system fusiom and Dstar sure, but a good dmr radio. Nahhh its much better than those. Plus this 436hp is just crap and doesn't even receive good with a nice antenna.

This scanner has worst manual and user menu ever seen. Nothing works as expected. Uniden engineers must have been locked in a bunker missing entire three decades of modern UI design advancements.
Unfortunately, those piggies are encrypting all their communications. Don't expect in the future the ability to be informed. Yes I hate digital; just because you can doesn't mean you should.
Cool video. Just check local law before driving around with this in your own car. A ham radio license *might* save your bacon if the law says you shouldn't have it on the road.

Just a tip if your county is still on a Analog radio system 500MHZ and under Don't waste your money just buy a Bafang and use that as a scanner

Both the Uniden and Whistler digital scanners are Pathetic. One the other hand the ICOM and AOR Digital Communication Receivers are a several levels in Advancement. the ICOM R-30A and the AOR DV-10 Handheld Digital Communication Receivers are Advanced and the Most Up to Date Scanners / Receivers you can buy. the ICOM R-30 has Built in GPS and has Dual Watch and a Band Scope Feature. the ICOM is also both Military Grade dust proof and water proof. While the AOR has a Automatic Detection of Digital Modes as well as GPS and is dust proof / waterproof. the AOR DV-10 also has Dual Watch and Band Scope.
