“I find beauty in this irony.” Definitely on of my favorite man at arms episodes. You can feel Ilya’s passion for swordsmithing and the way he elevates his craft to that of an artform. More power to you bro!
Um... actually that is not a KATANA, its a TACHI, they look similar but they ARE NOT THE SAME THING (though he is correct that it was used on horseback) try look up to google.
@@augusthermanto7787 Probably not. I think historically differential hardening was the way to have a hard but not so brittle blade, a temper would homogenize it.
This could so easily have been a remake of the Kill Bill episode. Once again, Ilya's knowledge and passion for traditional techniques is just so fascinating! Also, watching the blade writhe during the water quench was amazing!
It's a potent reminder of the FACT that a significant proportion of the curve of a historic katana is due to the quenching process. You can actually see the effect of the clay warping the blade (effectively making a bimetal).
It really isn't wasted time. It just depends on what someone considers "wasted time", "tedious" and "fun". Dunno about you, but some blade smiths like Ilya take their work as an art form - especially since Ilya stated that he has studied traditional techniques rigorously even to this day. Supposedly; in one of the AWE me videos, it was stated that he is one of the few Western master smiths widely acknowledged in those areas. Pretty much why it's almost always usually him front and center in the videos when it comes to traditional techniques more often than not. For people like him, smithing is more than just "making blades" wholesale. It's about the philosophy behind the craft as well as the art in it. It's why I like the Reforged crew a little more than Swatton's - no offense to Swatton as I know he can also make some stuff traditionally - but they don't always rely on plasma cutters and sheets of prefab metal most of the time - they literally make some blades semi-traditionally to full-on traditionally as well as explain a little more on what goes on during the process. That video a while back that they did with a scissor sword blade made from actual scissors melted down to become the final product is something I don't think Swatton would have done if it was still him in the show.
making blades is an art form. a bladesmith who makes things in wholesale has no business being an artist.instead of wasting time smelting and consolidating old school blume steel, you can make the blade much more beautiful and spend the time making it art rather than just being able to say it was smelted from dirt. The only real way to make blades art is with physical beauty, form and functionality. all the ideological beauty, for example, polishing on stones rather than using a sander for most of it and finishing with sand paper by hand is a massive waste of time. Polishing on stones = at least a few whole days (depending on how fine the rough grind is) sander+hand sand paper = a few hours ... final product - the same quality of polish. result - more time to put into making your blade better.
odinfromcentr2 eh... it's more the fact that the Russians and Japanese were once at war and the Japanese used the same style of weapon against the Russians. Now a Russian is crafting the same style weapon with pieces (sent from the Japanese to a Russian) and techniques from the same era that they were at war.
Even though this might not be the craziest or made for the most popular theme, it's by far my favorite for look, construction and materials. i come back and watch this episode at least once a year. Hope to one day have a reproduction commissioned. Probably never be able to afford it though. Oh well.
Yeah...Mostly His Build Is Pure Skill...I'm not saying other is not skillful...but He's More Skillful with Japanese and Chinese Traditional Weapon Build...(am i right?Pardon me if i'm wrong)
I do think he get more time on camera beause he is really good whit those AND because his strong points are the ones that can get more time on camera, i mean, they said it, it can take a month to grind this blade, and some of them take days, there is talent and expertice needed to that too, but it isnt that spectacular to put on camera
Interesting there are down votes to this.. Who honestly down votes this? This was probably their best build by far. The quality, the materials, the craftsmanship and time put into it was superb. The final product was a beautiful mix of modern and traditional.
Perhaps it may have to do with some negative views some people have with katanas. If you don't know many people, myself included, hate people who view katanas as the perfect sword. Although many do like and find appreciation of the design. I'd still rather have a longsword but I do like the katana. Although, there are a few who have a blind hate of it, same as a blind love of it. I do agree, this is one of their best build.
you cannot deny that there is not sword more perfect then the Katana ... however you cannot do with the katana what you can do for example with the broadsword ... you can grab the broadswords blade with your hand and slam its kling in the enemy's face ... try to do that with a katana and by the time you actually hold the blade? your fingers are off.
anrexfk Comments like yours are part of the reason this video has down votes. The katana is not the perfect sword. The broadsword is not there perfect sword. *There is no perfect sword.* People just have different levels of affection for different aesthetics, as well as different reasoning for ranking swords as more or less useful in different situations. Swords are tools and/or status symbols and/or terrible kitchen knives depending on who, what, and where you look. Lastly; any piece of steel that you can forge into a sword blade, can be sharpened equally. A broadsword and a katana made from the same steel can become equally sharp. Neither would have cut through a person's fingers just from holding it, because that's not how cutting works, and the katana has less chance of cutting the wielder due to having only 1 edge.
I think it's because of Ilya's experience and knowledge of various swordsmithing technique. As in he's not a master Japanese sword smith but he knows the correct practices for traditional sword making.
Question how many swords smiths are in the world and only the one's who make profit from it their can't be that many people who pay them to make a sword
Well the series was to celebrate the studio's anniversary, and their shop mainly does builds for the entertainment industry, so it makes sense to me, especially with ilya being there and this show being popular.

Kenshin's Sakabato/Reverse Blade Sword from Rurouni Kenshin, please! The edge being on the side where the dull part of the blade usually is would make for an interesting build.
No offense but why is Ilya so competent. The other smiths are definitely amazing by any account but Ilya is always the one directing the others and doing the more elaborate projects. Where did he learn that?
I know right!? Apparently he's mostly self-taught as well, so I guess it's just amazing natural born talent and years of practice. He's absolutely legendary imo.
Because he specialized in traditional high values sword making? Like it or not most sword makers prefer to use modern material and modern tools and not to faff around with traditional stuff
In one of the earlier episodes someone said that Ilya is a art school graduate, so he most likely applied his art skills to a different materials (he learned engraving by himself). There is plenty of free information on the internet, so if you have an access to proper tools, there's a lot you can learn just by trying to apply what you saw or read about. Metalworking is not that difficult - one just need to be patient and observant. Some natural talent also helps.
Ilya is mostly self taught, though he did spend time in Japan learning traditional Katana forging. Anytime they do any kind of asian weapon, especially Katanas, Ilya will be leading the charge for the most part.
Is it just me or were an awful lot of sexual innuendos in this episode? I mean, Ilya kept talking about his hard tip and now you're talking about gorgeous wood... ;-)
its the right word to use, since the different materials behave differently during the heat treatment, as demonstrated by the fishtank. They go over this in the Yasou episode aswell.
Being Japanese I hate people who think they know everything about the Japanese smithing process, but this video really restores my faith that non Japanese people can make absolutely stunning Katanas
yeah they're probably either making Genji's Dragonblade or Rose's Sword. I would love to see Hanzo's bow but I looked at the model and if I'm looking at it right it would be impossible for anyone to shoot it.
The whole forging process of the blade and final result was amazing. And that quenching in the aquarium was the cherry! In the end how much days did it took to polish the blade?
I really like the way you made the sword, it has a really unconventional handle and transition into the blade, and you just put the blade right through it and it turned out really nicely. I thought that feat of art was really classy. Also the Great Sword of Artorias.
Не так просто из анимешной фантазии сделать достойный меч, а использовать при этом традиционные техники, так и вовсе достойно большого уважения! Илья, ты красавчик!
Isn't that just a regular Katana with a dull edge and a sharpened back? There wouldn't be much of a difference and they've already made at least three Katanas (four if you count Sephiroth's Masamune as a Katana and not an Odachi).
I like that it is supposed to be a family heirloom, but he has modified it to have a trigger and laser edge. Sorry mom and pop, I turned our family's pride and joy into a light Saber.
That is quite possibly the most beautiful sword I have ever seen. The abstract shape of the guard with the gorgeous redwood shaped hilt. And that perfect blade... Oh yeah I want one xD
Ilya is a blacksmith pimp is there any sword or weapon this dude can make I know that this is a TEAM but seriously thoe Ilya is an incredible blacksmith and an armor maker whatever title you get for making armor
Something about how Sam works makes every task just seem routine to him, I feel like he's easily the most skilled blacksmith they have. It's amazing to watch Ilya with all the detail work though.
1.great addition to the series .the details are wonderful 2.going to check out this show so thank you for that as well 3.i would like to say thank your for all the inspiration, by carving you guys something any ideas?
that's why I appreciate katanas and their no ordinary blacksmiths. I imagined how they made their swords way back, building from ores, refining and forging it. The patience, perseverance and passion of the smith.
Lugz X It's his job to make weapons for tv-shows & such like, but I wouldn't say that he's working exclusively for Blizzard. I would be surprised If he were
That is true. Although I mostly meant that you probably couldn't work in the transformation and not have it collapse under its own weight the first time you swing it.
+Simon Eklund For them to make the sword is easy, how difficult it is to give detail to the sword as It have many drawings along the edge filled with skulls . I know it's a very difficult job but have that real , iron, must be beastly.
wow i loved it all the hard work and material used all the skills been in the making of this beautiful sword wow i loved it you need your special museum

12:01 - The water quenching segment was a real treat. Absolutely crazy to see the dynamics of the metal curving during the quench process!
yeah dude...it was awesome to see it...that curving of the blade when it was quenched...
I was thinking the same thing. What a cool way to show us!
Didnt he use tempering after quenching?
@@augusthermanto7787 Probably not. I think historically differential hardening was the way to have a hard but not so brittle blade, a temper would homogenize it.

yes do zoros swords.
How about Illidan Stormrage's Iconic weapons, Warglaives of Azzinoth? Obviously its a set of two twin blades. Now those would be sweet.
I thought they made it already on the world of Warcraft channel.
That was Tony Swatton
Jared Ringland Been mentioning those for ever now. They must be scared of them, or something.
Kakashikewl they did do them, just search it up, itll be on the Blizzard youtube channel or something, they turned out pretty sweet.
That was the other team, not the current one.
So much honor in this Master blacksmith
Man hats off to you all. U r more than a blacksmith. U just give the shape to the metal as u want. Amazing work 👍👍👌👌
The whole forging process of the blade and final result was amazing. And that quenching in the aquarium was the cherry!
In the end how much days did it took to polish the blade?
"I find beauty in this irony" -Ilya(2016), our lord and savior
One of the swords of the 7 deadly swordsman of the Hidden Mist in Naruto Shippuden
Also how about the Scythe from the final episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer
+Nathan Meyers they did Zabuzas blade
no they didnot
that would be pretty sick
denchik nevermind thought they did in the older season
I really like the way you made the sword, it has a really unconventional handle and transition into the blade, and you just put the blade right through it and it turned out really nicely. I thought that feat of art was really classy. Also the Great Sword of Artorias.
Не так просто из анимешной фантазии сделать достойный меч, а использовать при этом традиционные техники, так и вовсе достойно большого уважения!
Илья, ты красавчик!
Blueblood Sword- Demon's Souls. A unique challenge, the entire complete sword appears to be one piece.
that's actually an interesting idea
I like how the kawagane does the job at the tip and the shingane forms the spine. Great job.
I also find the beauty in the... Iron..y
punch me...
He's been hamon it a lot.
BlarghMeow i bet the price on that sword is a steel Bah dum tss
*Hi*
*Ha* so *sori* but not *same-hada* as Kuromukuro *saya* me. Orrow worku rike *menuki* not *bosi* of katana maku.
have you ever heard the tragedy of darth plagueis the wise
this show is so underrated :(
yeah i know
Hell no, it gets the attention it needs. The guy who makes big ass sword by himself is better (he made some FF swords)
Morgan Freckle I was talking about the anime...
they should invite fans to see the making..
let the words spread...
I concur.
You can tell Illya was really into this project. Great work dude.
Bettr than forged in fire.I'm speechless of your awsome work.especially every swords history.
Ya gotta do the reverse blade sword from Samurai X
Isn't that just a regular Katana with a dull edge and a sharpened back? There wouldn't be much of a difference and they've already made at least three Katanas (four if you count Sephiroth's Masamune as a Katana and not an Odachi).
It is also a lot heavier then an average katana and a message on the tang. But more a less, just and average Katana
XeroTheLegend I know but the design is cool
You need something difficult to build to mess with them, like Hak's glaive from 'Akatsuki no yona' ;P
dvanw6 Sorry that reply was mean't for VestedUTuber
Do Yato's sword from Noragami!
Zachary McQuage Y U K I N E
Iam not sure if they can forge young boy xD
😂
Dude... yes! although the hilt wrap I imagine to be hard to replicate
you guys should do genji's (from overwatch) blades, katana, and tanto ish blade.
I like that it is supposed to be a family heirloom, but he has modified it to have a trigger and laser edge. Sorry mom and pop, I turned our family's pride and joy into a light Saber.
lol pretty much. Its still a badass blade
I thought the family sword was in the Dragons short. The one with the blue tsuka. Where Hanzo was offering incense
hate how much i want it
That is quite possibly the most beautiful sword I have ever seen. The abstract shape of the guard with the gorgeous redwood shaped hilt. And that perfect blade... Oh yeah I want one xD
I love that music when the weapon's finished
Me too.
i've been trying to figure out what it's called, but at this point i'm guessing it's created specifically for that shot.
In fact, I was on Spotify, in the radio and this song land from nowhere. Just a lucky strike 😆.
The name of this song is: Universal Trailer Series - Time Bomb (Heaven & Hell Remix)
:O thank you so much!
Ilya is a blacksmith pimp is there any sword or weapon this dude can make I know that this is a TEAM but seriously thoe Ilya is an incredible blacksmith and an armor maker whatever title you get for making armor
I meant to say is there any sword or weapon this dude can't make
Sam can make much better katanas in a fraction of the time and without the lecture or the Fabio hair.
Something about how Sam works makes every task just seem routine to him, I feel like he's easily the most skilled blacksmith they have. It's amazing to watch Ilya with all the detail work though.
meh... takes him forever to get to the point.
pretty sure...
please make jetstream sam's high frequency blade from metal gear rising :D :D
YES!
it must be awesome !
Omg yes yes yes!!!!!! Makes Sam's sword from MGR!!

Genji's sword from Overwatch! (and maybe the shuriken too!)
I wonder how many pairs of headphones Ilya goes through while working there? I bet it's a lot, I'd be melting those cords left right and centre
Bring me Peter pan I wonder the same thing
Amazing blade. Iliya amazes me every time he does a piece
Please make Roronoa Zorros Sandai Kitetsu please and if its possible all three of them ^_^

Make the Genji's Dragonsword plssss guys.
From Overwatch
oh yes, what that dude said :)
Yes please do it guys
Yes genji's dragon blade and honzo dragon bow
that sword is basically a lightsaber
If there's any chance you could make a weapon from the Ninja Gaiden franchise, could you either make Ryu's Dragon Sword or the Blade of the Archfiend?
Now there's an interesting suggestion.
Thanks.
Max level lunar staff would be sick, where the two spiked heads are attached to the chains
that's why I appreciate katanas and their no ordinary blacksmiths. I imagined how they made their swords way back, building from ores, refining and forging it. The patience, perseverance and passion of the smith.
Ilya is a freaking legend.
Also, do the infinity blade!!!!!
+ManthisR ^this
Illidan's Warglaives of Azzinoth from World of Warcraft please
All of my yes!
yeah
Just go on the Warcraft UA-cam page. Azeroth Armory.
He might be working exclusively for Blizzard now because he has been making a lot for them recently.
Lugz X It's his job to make weapons for tv-shows & such like, but I wouldn't say that he's working exclusively for Blizzard. I would be surprised If he were
Could you please do the Crescent Rose from RWBY, seeing how volume four is just over a month away.
Way too complicated.
not necessarily, assuming they do away with the transformation, since that would be more or less impossible to do while retaining basic functionality.
Also, scythes aren't functional weapons. They're not even weapons at all. They're lawn mowers.
That is true. Although I mostly meant that you probably couldn't work in the transformation and not have it collapse under its own weight the first time you swing it.
yeah do ruby's crescent per scythe from RWBY it would be so cool.ecen without the transformation
I've seen these people do this hundreds of times, and it still amazes me
The Chaoseater, the personal blade of War, One of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. That blade its so fuc*** big!
i have seen some magical builds by these guys. But War's Sword? that ain't an easy task :)
+Simon Eklund
For them to make the sword is easy, how difficult it is to give detail to the sword as It have many drawings along the edge filled with skulls .
I know it's a very difficult job but have that real , iron, must be beastly.
make mugens sword from samurai Champloo
Yessssssss pleaseeee
With the scabbard and dagger
oh yeah that would be cool
Talion's swords from middle earth shadow of mordor
Hey, that'd be pretty good actually
yes
Which version? There are 3 but, Im kinda interested to see the max upgraded sword.
Yeah Tallions swords and The daggers that schould be awesome :)
What would be really cool would be if they fully made the blade portion of Dirhael's sword and then broke it to form Talion's dagger.
wow
i loved it all the hard work and material used
all the skills been in the making of this beautiful sword
wow i loved it
you need your special museum
make the reverse blade sword from rurouni kenshin!
why not, the Ike's Sword (Ragnell) from Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
YES PLEASE I agree
What about Corrin's. I think that is how you spell it.
I'd like if they made both the Ragnell and the Alondite.
They could do the double build and make both Ragnell and Alondite!
Can you guys do a bloopers if you guys did something wrong with some sword.
On camera
I second this idea
+DerpyFood That'd be hilarious.

Korey Guthrie
Yes, good point.
Joseph CroenianGamer dude, didn't even think of that
Edwin Latorre I dont think they will, but it would be nice.
Joseph CroenianGamer never know. If we got enough people asking for it
Dude, when they were making the sword with the Tamahagane and sharpening the kissaki/ edge of the sword, dude, my heart was beating too fast man~
Do genji's blade from overwatch

Yessssssss plzzz I've been wanting to see them build something from Overwatch and Genji's sword is perfect!!!
Beautiful , that was really amazing. I really enjoyed watching this. It’s not a movie but it kinda satisfying. Man I wish I could forge one ☺️
