Unveiling the legend of Wild Bill Hickok | Part One

  • Few names associated with the old west are as recognizable as Wild Bill Hickok. And for good reason. In many ways, Wild Bill was the quintessential Westerner of the later 19th century. Wagon master, scout, soldier, spy, lawman, gambler, actor, and yeah…gunfighter. A man capable of extraordinary feats of daring and bravery, yet courteous and soft-spoken when left alone, and kind to children. One of the few frontiersmen who was willing to take his guns off and go toe to toe with anyone looking for a fight. But also, a man who - even by generous accounts - was a bit too quick when it came to pulling the trigger. He could cuss like a sailor, consorted with ladies of ill repute, and would rather gamble than eat. He was friends with other notable frontiersmen like Buffalo Bill Cody, George Armstrong Custer, Kit Carson, and Calamity Jane, and Inspired future legends like U.S. Marshal Bill Tilghman and countless others. A celebrity in his own time, Hickok continues to tickle the imagination of millions. From the early silent film era till now, everyone from Gary Cooper to Charles Bronson to Jeff Bridges, Sam Elliot, and Keith Carradine has portrayed this icon on the big screen. But who was Hickok really? What sorta man was he? As with many notorious characters of the old west, much of the legend is built on exaggerated claims and outright lies. But in Hickok’s case, the truth is even more fascinating fiction. #wildwest #history #western

I live in Deadwood I really appreciate this. It's nice to acknowledge Hickok on the anniversary of his death. I love this picture also. Hickok had brothers and sisters he would send his brother a picture from time to time and tell him don't show Mom. He had obviously been growing his hair out and living a little wild

You live in Deadwood?! 😮 That must be such a magnificent place to have grown up! I'm from Salem, MA (north of Boston) and I know how many people "forget" to appreciate the means in which our country was "founded" and settled. I've always genuinely loved history- ESPECIALLY American history. I feel blessed to have grown up in such a historic place.
Do you visit the places spoken of in Deadwood? Or also- The Black Hills..? I told my husband just a few days ago that I want to stay at the "Bullock Hotel" and am adding it to my "bucket list" of places I want to see before I pass.

Gotta agree about the bear story. Severing a bears jugular, when it's actively mauling you isn't, a fight winner. It's still free to keep mauling you, until it's oil pressure reaches zero. That'll take a few minutes, which is way more than enough for it to kill you, several times.

it is to Hickock's credit that he was clearly more forward thinking than his parents (and perhaps their generation) in that he was able to fall for her regardless of her ethnic background such that it was only when duty to/respect for his parents (something that would have been a particularly big deal at that time as well) became the issue, rather than race, that he ended it. So, in spite of how it turned out, good for him.

Severing a jugular won't put a mammal down too fast; BUT a severed Carotid Artery, WILL. In fact, 5 seconds is about the everage. (I practice old-school ju-juitsu, and a carotid "blood choke" will put you out in , funnily enough, about 5 seconds), so the bear story is at least possible, IF Billy-boy got the carotid. Difficult to do in a bear, but at least possible. Another really interesting episode buddy.

Lesson of the episode. Women don’t like no man stank. Men don’t like no woman stank. If you stanky you gets no hanky panky.

Hickok was born in 1836, not 1839. He died in 1876 at age 39.
