After five years of studying Spanish - two at Instituto Cervantes and two in college - I can say most emphatically that you are the best Spanish teacher I've ever seen. Anyone can "know" a language, but not anyone can "teach" it to others, Signed a former TEFL in the EU

Now I see why many natives avoided the question, "So why did you use the subjunctive tense in that sentence?"
I had no idea it was this complicated. But, in less than 40 minutes, I was able to understand what has baffled me after months of reading article after article and asking language partners time and time again. EXCELLENT video!!! Muchas gracias por hacer este video!!!

Soy maestra de inglés en Buenos Aires; hace unos meses tomé a una estudiante nigeriana que quiere aprender español. El desafío de transmitirle el significado y los usos del subjuntivo fue transitado por ambas muy cómodamente gracias a tu video. Te estoy infinitamente agradecida.

It has always infuriated me how insistent formal teaching academies in Spain are about how 'difficult' the subjunctive is. It's made difficult because it's treated as being difficult. It's actually not that difficult but is taught so 'late' that people have already formed bad habits rather than learning to recognise and apply it from the beginning of the process. I wish I had seen this overview before, which is an excellent example of what I have wanted all along (and now I'm B2) to neatly explain it. It's just a bit late for me but still useful so thank you and well done!

You are spot on. It's never mentioned until the person is at an intermediate level, by which point the use of the indicative is ingrained.

pauldanielbatty I'm having the same issue, I can hold a fb conversation in Spanish, and I can form sentences and ideas without a dictionary or assistance, I can have a conversation with my Latin American friends.. Yet I don't know this tense, and I now know I'm using the indicative when I shouldn't!!

Following each new set of subjunctive phrases with a slide containing examples of similar but non-subjunctive phrases, helps delineate the aspect of the original phrase that makes it call for the subjunctive. Really effective teaching!

Thank you so much Professor Jason! I recently started teaching Spanish as a second language and your videos are really a great help! I wanted to add a little footnote, in case it is useful for someone: the use of the subjunctive with "mientras" refers to the condition, not so much to the time or duration of the action. So much so, that it can be used to differentiate between those two nuances: "Espero a mi amigo mientras paga la cuenta" (my friend is paying the bills and I'm waiting for him while he does it)/ "Espero a mi amigo mientras pague las cuentas" (I'm gonna wait for my friend if/on the condition that he pay the bills). So, if we want to say that we are going to do something while (during the same period of time that) another person does something else, we should use the indicative, not the subjunctive. I realize this can be a little tricky, and tough to explain in such a short space. Sheers for the helpful videos!

You gave me clear categories of when the subunctive is required. I appreciate that very much. I grew up in a family where English was spoken in the home. Then my family moved to Ecuador, later to Mexico. Kids my age spoke Spanish, and I learned from them to the point where there willingness to stop and teach interfered with the social event, and somehow the subjunctive got left out. Your formal tutorial gives me a feel for what I missed in my informal "lessons". Thank you.
I also note that Spanish in different countries is different. The word criada is much more loosely defined in South America then it is in Spain, for example. A pea in Ecuador is alberja. My Mexican friends don't understand that word.
    Hasta la proxima vez, entonces.

Vale, Tomás :) No te discuto nada... Es más, te confieso que me admiro de tus conocimientos sintácticos, bien hecho. Again, what's happening here is that we don't necessarily disagree, but we are using two different kinds of terminology. I am using a terminology that my American students can understand. You are using a more technical terminology to describe syntax. I really do appreciate your comments. They are very helpful! Keep commenting! :)

Just a suggestion, when you make longer videos you could put in the description different times... for example 5:55 when the subject changes and you can somehow state in the description next to the time what the subject is . Like, at 6:34 you speak about X but in 9:30 you talk about Y.

Muchas gracias por el vídeo. ¿Podría contestar a esta pregunta relacionado con el subjuntivo? (Could I have also said ´´¿Usted pueda contestar?´´ since I don´t necessarily know if you can answer it?) La pregunta es - En esta oración, ´´si no quisieras ayudar en tu pueblo, no me hubieses (could also be hubieras right?) conocido´´ should it not have been ´´no me habrías conocido´´? I´m pretty sure it means ´´if you hadn´t wanted to help in your village, you wouldn´t have met me´´ so shouldn´t the latter clause be in the conditional habría instead of another past subjunctive conjugation like hubieses? also i´m pretty sure I learned that hubiese was pretty archaic and hubiera is much more common.
