  • The first in a series of videos about my experiences playing trumpet and using the TCE as a professional player.
I've been using the TCE for 10 years and in this episode I start to describe how I found the technique and the early days of using it.

Unfortunately Ralf has the attitude that he is right (only he knows) and everybody else is wrong. Doesn't take long listening to any of his videos to see that come through. Glad you are back making videos always very informative.

    Thanks for the upload!
I tried teaching myself TCE back in the early 2000s, with no success. A year or two later I flew to New York and took 2 all day lessons with Mr. Callet. Although it was a really cool experience, I still never managed to figure out the spit buzz, so I made no progress on the trumpet and eventually gave it up.
I eventually made a career out of being a pianist and cruise ship entertainer, which I have no regrets about.
But there's always that part of me that regrets never really getting my trumpet playing together; its a shame, because I was good at all the other aspects of trumpet outside of embouchure: fingers, reading, phrasing, improvising, etc. But not being able to play consistently above the staff and having no endurance was a real deal breaker.
I've been enjoying your videos, and I'm hoping there's a chance I might still be able to solve the problems in my own playing with the help of your content. At this point it's basically a bucket list thing, although if I got my playing together, I'm sure I could find a way to integrate it into my cruise gig!

The key to developing any part of your playing is to having an aspect of it in your daily practice routine for a period of time. In the case of range the problems always seem to arise when:
      a) Something is fundamentally wrong like breathing, overblowing, stretching of the lips, etc.
      or
      b) People ascend to a certain pitch with one way of playing and then start doing something else when they try to go higher - usually this is caused by a sudden feeling of weakness around that pitch, which will be caused by the system being out of balance.
You may be relying too much on one thing - like embouchure, air, or tongue level (if you're into that!) - no one of those tools can do all of the work, they need to function together.
This isn't everything - you'll hear me say a lot that someone's tone concept it enough to ruin an otherwise capable player, for example...

I currently have 1SB from Ray Salamone and your mouthpiece and Bahb Civilette Mouthpiece and DVD.

Which do you use the most? I played on Bahb’s mouthpiece for years but it wasn’t the best for me. I love the look though!
