  • Welcome to Episode 2 of TCE Talks.
In this recording I ramble on about commitment to ideas and practices, one of the methods that distracted me from TCE and teaching with words that people understand.... among other things...

Well stated. Thank you for starting this new . Also thank you so much for being true to your perspective and providing the encouragement for others to do the same. I agree with you wholeheartedly that fixation on external appearances of the orabicularis are Downstream from the control point of the tongue which makes those observations apparent

Where can I find your TCE practice #1 through #10. I have only found a few... would like to study from the beginning.

If you go to one of the websites in the description and send me an email then I’ll send the links to you directly. I took quite a few videos down because I wasn’t happy with the quality.

How long does it take the average person for TC embouchure to actually become useable and comfortable to actually make a good trumpet sound. I'm not talking about high register at all, Just how long before TCE is actually comfortable and useable because I've been trying for two weeks and I'm struggling to get any kind of decent sound out at all. I flatten my tongue, put it pass my teeth, put the tongue on top of my bottom lip, try to flatten my chin, keep my tongue on the bottom lip, and it's a real struggle to get ANY decent sound out at all. No one, as far as I have seen so far, EVER talks about how long TCE takes to get even lower staff notes to come comfortably and cleanly. So far, I sound like a wounded moose. That's WITH the trumpet. Also, is the sound/airflow supposed to come out the center of the lips or off center of the lips?

      Hi Jerry,
I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling. To a degree it depends on your definition of a good sound. I think it helps a lot in the beginning to be of the mindset that you’re simply learning a new way to articulate notes. Aim for clean attacks. It is difficult - I have some videos in my archive from being a month in and struggling a lot with consistency. I was very frustrated.
I’ve often recommended to people to find stepping stones to progress rather than to make a hard switch. In the beginning just learn to “tongue through the teeth”, which means to attack notes by striking the inside of the top lip with the tip of the tongue. In a short time this can start to feel natural and you will build up strength in the tongue in order for it to feel more comfortable in the forward position. You will also be paving the way by learning to keep the jaw open and the power of this type of attack will lead you to using your air differently.
I already have the next couple of episodes of TCE Talks recorded, but I’ll put this topic on the list… most likely it’ll be episode 8, and I’ll include some demonstrations.
This is exactly the sort of question I want to help people with by making these videos.

@@BrassPractice Hello Rich, thank you so much for replying and for all of your UA-cam videos. I'm well aware that you don't have to take the time to make them, but you do, and I am very thankful . I will keep at it and take all your advice. I'm somewhat unusual in that I'm more interested in eventually having endurance and good tone than hitting the coveted double high C, but I admit, being able to play high is appealing to me, just like any other trumpeter. Again, thank you for replying and your kindness for making your videos. Happy Holidays.
