- Time for another experiment! Many of you suggested/challenged me to paint the motherboard in my modded Dell Optiplex 3040 (OptiFlex). Is it okay, or not? Let's risk my motherboard and find out! For science!

You masked off the vrm chokes but not the mosfets which generate most of the heat.
I realized the same thing. I cleaned the paint and acrylic coating off of them before testing the board the 2nd time!
it wont hurt them anyways. I have had several systems that have been painted / coated and it changes nothing whatsoever.

Take your time, mask everything off like I did in the video. Start out with a light coat of acrylic conformal coating and a slightly thicker coat the 2nd time and then a slightly heavier coat than that for the last one. Then repeat the same steps for the paint
what are the mosfets? i wanna do this but dont know where they are adn how they look

I currently am about to hit my 12th year on UA-cam as of Feb 29th! (started my channel on a leap year!) It's kind of cool to have a channel for so long. It's somewhat of a time capsule for myself. I like to look back where I began and compare to how my videos are now from time to time.
I don't intend on stopping with making videos! The channel has somewhat taken off this past year and I'd like to keep the momentum going!
painting PCB's works just fine as long as the paint don't contain metal in some form.
I've been doing that for years in various mods. One only need to mask off connectors and surfaces that need heatsinks. Everything else can be painted just fine, including caps and ICs
Correct. Using a metallic paint, for example, would more than likely short the board. Metallic paint contains metal. But, Engine Enamel paint does not.
Well... ok. Yeah. Just paint a PCB. Why not xD What could go wrong

That's quite the expensive board. Considering most boards at that price point are usually all black or white, I don't see myself painting a board in that price point. I painted this board because it was green. But, you never know lol. Most of my mods are spontaneous. I could wake up one day and just say "let's paint my Zenith Extreme Motherboard" lol.

As I have been in pcb work all my life, adding conformal coating and paint will help hot components cool faster cause the paint/coating will help
Is it because it distributes the heat over a wider surface area than what the component itself has?
@@magnanimus9692 the conformal coating and paint will repeal heat. We tested this theory and it is true. Also, if it were on heat sensitive parts that needed cooled, it will cause the part to fail as it will be hardend on the part causing insulation barrier

But spray paint is generally acrylic anyway and would insulate against electrical shorts. There was this issue of using metallic paint though. There were reports that using metallic paint on automotive engines causes short circuits to the engine electronics. Logical as metallic paint as metal particles inside. I bet the same thing might happen if you use metallic paint for on motherboards. But the conformal coating is probably the solution if you decide to use metallic paint.
The CPU temp change could also be that the cooler is making much better contact with the IHS after reseating it.
That is very possible! If you slow down the footage and look at the thermal paste spread on the cooler, it wasn't the greatest. I put a little more thermal paste on the CPU when re-assembling it after painting, to get a better spread.
FYI, ceramic header paint from auto parts store is non-conductive. It's sometimes used on transmitting antennas.
I figured as much. Considering this is a tutorial and some people may grab a paint that is conductive, I showed off the acrylic conformal coating
One thing that could be good to "upgrade" even more that mob is making heatsinks for the PCH and the Mosfets as well and make even an I/O cover with some LEDs
There is no cutout for an I/O shield. Just ports cut out on the case. Plus, I don't really feel like making a custom I/O shield for a Dell motherboard. I could put a heatsink on the PCH. But, it's not needed. Intel actually states that a heatsink is not needed for motherboards that use locked processors because they only use 65W. The Mosfets don't seem to be getting too warm, again due to using a locked processor in the PC. As long as I have some airflow moving air across the Mosfets, I'm good.
Perfect experiment, work and video! I don't need to paint MB right now, because I made my own PC case from wood, so there's no glass and LED lights, but I prepared that wood to be super flat and painted it to black with gloss black elements. So finaly I have experience with preparing & painting wood. But for my future builds, your video is very helpful! Thank you very much!

@@WiltshireTutorials Yes :-) I used MDF s for it, but making surface absolutely flat was real pain! I used wood putty on whole surface, and then sanded it after drying, and the same process two times. Then I used black matt color and applied with fine brush. Now it looks like plastic. As ftont panel I used piece of transparent vinyl, made tons of holes for proper air intake and then used fine sandpaper and made it matt (non-transparent). And hardest things was spraying specific parts to black gloss. My next build will be combination of aluminium and glass, and there I can apply your method on motherboard - of course it depends what I will buy, which mobo color. Your job was hard to cover everyting properly, mine to make superflat wood surface :-) Good luck with other projects!

The change in CPU temps could be due to an improved mount of the HSF over the previous mounting. That's actually not unusual. [H]ardOCP (R.I.P.) did considerable testing of the variability of CPU mounting back about 10 or so years ago. It was pretty interesting reading. At any rate, interesting concept. I remember back in the day when black solder mask wasn't a thing and at best you'd find motherboards that were a really dark brown (almost black, more like black coffee) but they were few and far between and red or blue (MSI and Gigabyte respectively) or a goldish brown (ASUS). Unfortunately, the conformal coating you used prior to painting wasn't a thing back when I was starting my PC building hobby so I'm not too sure how painting would fare without it. I'm way too cheap to find out either.
Interesting. That definitely could be a possibility that the mount was better when I put things back together.

Also wanted your professional opinion on the subject. I wanna paint a 1U Flex PSU black, since it came from Ali plain silver. What paint would you recommend or primer, if necessary and proper application method?
Happy to hear that I keep upping the bar! Hmmm, a loop could be possible if I swapped out the motherboard for the M.2 version. That would clear up room for a small res and pump in the case with no SSD taking up room. I would have to find a radiator for 80mm fans though! May buy another 3040 MT and experiment with that idea.
Sure thing! I would first take the shroud of the PSU off. Just make sure that PSU has been sitting unplugged for a while before attempting to disassemble. You could hurt yourself with leftover energy that may be stored in the componants. With the shroud off, use a red Scotch Brite pad to rough up the surface of the metal a little. You need to sand the surface so the paint has something to bite into. Next, you could use a primer + paint combo or use something separate. I've found success with the Dupli-Color engine enamel primer and paint.

Thanks for the tips. So basically, slightly sand it and use engine paint and primer, huh? Got it. Hope I can find a Dupli-Color alternative, since I don't live in Canada or the US, I've not seen that brand here.

Very difficult to get footage of an all black interior. I did film some of it, but wasn't pleased with how the footage looked. Too much grain/noise from having to boost the ISO. I was sweating a little when painting the motherboard. Wasn't confident at all lol

And this is how you make that motherboard a nightmare to repair...
Most people don't possess the know how on how to repair a motherboard. So...
We used to do that back in the days of the ol' Barton AMD's using UV paints and making up custom colours with glow in the dark powder. Then a nice UV cold cathode and you could get some super funky schemes and I was an early water cooler and finding dyes for the pipes to make it pump green or red UV reactive water. Best modding case was the huge Antec Skeleton, I sprayed mine acid green with red flecking with the water on it dyed UV green and had a Coolermaster "green orb" tank... with the lights and phosphoring of the UV stuff it made you feel like you were gaming inside a bubble of poison :P I found fishing float paints very good as they were oil based like an enamel and took the heat very well, mix in some UV powder of your choice and you could pick out chips, architecture in super different ways and being oil based meant you never had to worry about shorting anything.
I'm older than I look lol. I remember those days as well. My cousin was into UV lighting way back in the day. Were you rocking the king Athlon XP 3000+ at the time? My brother's 1st PC build I did with him was all UV neon green. Except his was an Athlon X2 7750

Makes sense. You masked the actual components so all you really painted was the chunk of fiberglass and copper tracks.

i have a question, i want to buy a ryzen 5 3600 CPU but i don't want to buy a x570 (to expensive), i want a x470 (the Asus prime x470 because its white) but i don't have an old chip to update the bios, so how can i update the bio differently? (and for my GPU, should i wait for the new nvidia 3000?)

Unfortunately, I don't have the PC anymore. I sold it to a customer looking for an all white PC.
Also be sure to mask the screw holes as they act as ground for the screws
I did. If you noticed in the video, I used screws in the mounting holes to cover the grounding pads on the board.

The OptiFlex is becoming ridiculously powerful!
That's about as strong as it will get. The only thing I can do is put a more beefy GPU in it. I've maxed out the processor and RAM.
@@WiltshireTutorials Nah, I feel like we've reached perfection. This is seriously one of the greatest labors of love on a PC I've seen anywhere online, I know I couldn't invest that much energy into a PC :)
Glad you think so! Working on it kept me busy for a few weeks. There are a few things I could do still, like cable manage a bit better and maybe make an RGB OptiFlex logo on the PSU shroud. Other than that, I think OptiFlex is finished as well. Onto the next project!
Now put a new Mini ITX motherboard in it.

You actually taped off the chokes and painted the VRMs.
Correct. I realized this after applying the acrylic coating and painting the board. I cleaned the VRMs off while off camera before giving the PC its first test boot though. I figured people wouldn't notice, so I didn't reshoot that portion of the video. Good eye!
You didn't mask off the heat-generating components in the VRMs. You masked off everything which produces very little heat, and you spray-painted the mosfets.
As I mentioned in one of the top comments, I realized the same thing and removed both the paint and acrylic off of the mosfets before turning on the PC for the first time. I didn't bother re-recording because I figured no one would notice. Obviously, I was wrong!

Would be cool to see an attempt to just spray it with everything plugged into dummy parts just for this process, maybe skip most of the cap masking and stuff.
It would look odd with everything being completely black. I like the contrast between the caps, VRMs and such to the now black PCB

Hey, nice rig there. I was on my way to make all white pc and buy some MSI Arctic board, but then looking to make some custom armor for my old one but this is great. Saving some moonies tho lol.
Thanks! I've made a few all-white PCs in the past. Unfortunately it's very difficult to find all-white parts. Also, when you do find them, they're usually more expensive than their all-black counterparts. I'm glad I was able to show you another option that you could consider for your build. Hey.. can you upload a video for how to revert this process?? You Know what I'm saying???
No process really needed. Just take the CR2034 battery out of the motherboard and leave the motherboard unplugged for a few days. This we discharge the capacitors. Then just take some 99% isopropyl alcohol to the motherboard. Coating should come off.

meh to black i dunno if thats worth the risk, i'd probably go with something like a mirror coating make the rgb pop even more :D
I would say it's subjective. I personally cannot stand the look of a green PCB. I'd much rather paint the PCB, then stare at a green PCB all the time. RGB is obnoxious enough as it is. No need to make it more lol. That's coming from an RGB fan too
@@WiltshireTutorials its more in the idea of less is more, since the mirror effect is gonna make little bit of rgb look like alot of it. for people who dont have enough money to buy rgb fans ect
Fair enough! Although you may spend more money on the reflective coating, than you would on RGB. Hard to say though.
@WiltshireTutorials hey there can u suggest me after performing the 2 steps suggested by you which is conformal coating followed by spray paint and then allowed to dry. Do u think after this if one wants to solder or desolder the components on the motherboard is there is a possibility that the paint will catch fire once in contact with hot soldering tip?
If you wish to de-solder components, it's completely fine to do so. Conformal coating was made with de-soldering components in mind.
@@WiltshireTutorials thanks a million for getting back couple of more things have u heard of plastidip I got recommend from Reddit saying a direct coating onto motherboard of that product is possible! can u suggest me conformal coating brand names and colors which u prefer for motherboard paint project ! Also if i do want to desolder the components on motherboard once spray painted will the paint catch fire once in contact with the solder tip, are u on reddit or discord?
@@user-zd2cq9zc6l You could use Plastidip. It's a rubberized coating after all. I do not like Plastidip myself though. I don't like the lack of durability or the look of the finish on it. For conformal coating, I used MG Chemicals' conformal coating. Do wear a respirator when spraying it. For paint I like to use VHT engine enamel paint. Avoid metallic paints, as the metallic flake in the paint is conductive.

First, thanks for subscribing. I appreciate it very much. As for your question, I would use an enamel aerosol paint. I would highly recommend using a conformal coating first before paint!
Wiltshire Tutorials sir there is no available enamel aerosol paint and conformal coatings here in my place, can I directly use 1 cot of clear gloss acrylic and 3 coats of black acrylic?
I haven't tested just a normal acrylic. I still recommend trying to find a conformal coating of some sort. It's specifically made for PCBs. The paint doesn't really matter. As long as it is heat resistant up to 100 C
You didn’t mask off every individual resistor
Good eye. There were a few spots where I forgot to mask things off. The VRMs were one spot as well. I removed the paint and acrylic using 99% alcohol after shooting the footage. I was too lazy to reshoot the b-roll footage as I had already reassembled the PC when I noticed my error.

Hey, I know this is an old video but I am looking to coat a motherboard for an upcoming build to protect it from sea air. We live aboard our sailboat and I want to ensure the PC lasts as long as possible. I am curious if this machine is still around and running with this board, if it had had any issues, etc.
Machine is still up and running. It actually never gets turned off, due to it being dedicated as my own private Minecraft server for my family and friends. So, if that's not considered a stress test, then I don't know what is!

It is! Currently 4:30am! I'm on vacation until the new year from work. So, I'm busy working on more UA-cam content while I can! Work tends to reduce my energy and creative levels afterwards
Think i should sand the bare metal interior before spray painting the case itself? (Obviously all hardware is out).. I want the case as modded as possible before reinstalling hardware so I've removed my 7020 mt HDD cage and mounting bracket, and now I just want to paint it flat black. Any feedback appreciated
I personally would do so! It's always best to scuff whatever it is that your painting beforehand! It gives the paint a surface to bite into and stick! A 400 grit sandpaper would do the trick. You don't want to have heavy scratches on the bare metal. Remember to clean the sanded case with rubbing alcohol after sanding! You don't want any dust particles on the case while painting!

Would krylon 1303 crystal clear acrylic coating spray work as a good substitute to the acrylic conforming coating?
No. It would act as an insulator and could possibly be conductive for the sensitive components. The conformal coating is designed for use on motherboards and it's components.

One more thing, was that only one pass of the conformal coating or did you do multiple passes before the paint? I only saw one pass but wasn't sure if maybe you did more off camera
Sorry for the late reply, your comment got buried in my comments section. I did a few coats of conformal coating. I rotated the motherboard 90 degrees for each additional coating to make sure to get all sides of the components to protect them. When painting, be sure to stay away from metallic paints, as they contain metal flake and will be conductive. Only go for flat paints.

Hey I am looking to do this, could I show you how my mobo looks after prep to see if I missed masking off any crucial components, I made sure I got all heatsink mosfets and I put cardboard in the pcie and dimm slots. But just wanted to be sure...

How i know what coating will not break it
Anything with metallic is conductive. As long as the paint is non-conductive, you should be fine. Make sure to use acrylic conformal coating before painting the motherboard.
This is a automotive paint? In my country don't sell this paint showed in this video, so have find a other option. Thanks!!
It's meant for Engine blocks. Not the exterior of a vehicle.

NO! this is really wrong. You dont spray the chips, that's correct. You don't spray the capacitors, that's correct! But you still cover the small resistors that will overheat as a result... in time they will burn. Spraying your mb is never a good idea.
Good eye! I accidentally forgot to mask off the VRMs. I went back and removed the coating and paint from the VRMs in between shots. Obviously, I wasn't able to reshoot that part after painting it. I saw little to no difference in temperature afterwards. So, I'm going to have to disagree with you.

Hi, if I may ask out of curiosity, what mic do you use for your videos?
I use a mix of microphones in my videos. It all depends on what type of video I'm doing. Voice-over work is a Shure SM7B w/ a GoldenAge Pre73 MKIII pre-amp. For on-camera audio, it's an AudioTechnica AT831b w/ a Zoom H4N. Keep in mind that I do some post-processing work to my vocal tracks in Audition.
Is it called an optiflex because of the flex in the case with the panel off?
Surprisingly, the case doesn't have too much flex to it.
How did you mount non-standard Motherboards into that case?
That's the original case for the motherboard? I modified a Dell Optiplex 3040 case.

Just a foam double sided tape. Don't need anything expensive for mounting the SSF

Not sure I will be recording another video on OptiFlex. I've pretty much done all that I can do with it. However, I've been using OptiFlex with the painted motherboard since recording this video for a Minecraft server and a portable gaming machine. Had the server running 24/7 since painting the board and played 5 hours straight of Apex Legends as well. Everything is running just fine! 👍

That Dupli-Color paint is some of the worst crap on the market. PPG should be ashamed of themselves because of it.
PlastiCoat is a far superior product.
Are you using HWINFO for your temp readings? I have found it to be the most accurate in my tests. HWMonitor doesn't give very good readings at all, in my experience.
In my experience, the Dupli-Color Engine Enamel paint has worked quite well. Never used PlastiCoat before. Perhaps I'll experiment with it in my own time some day. If it's anything like Plasti-Dip, then I probably won't like it.
I used HWInfo64 in this video. I tend to lean towards using HWInfo more than anything else.
@@WiltshireTutorials I am a Mechanic (30+yrs), and I've had nothing but bad luck with that paint. It doesn't stick, it runs, and makes the engines I build look bad. And this is not just one instance, but multiple builds, with a number of different colours used. And they all reacted the same way. Maybe they just send the crappy paint to us Canadians! LOL!
How are you prepping the surfaces of the engine? Are you using an acid etching primer at all? Are you sanding the surface a little to allow the primer to bite into the surface?
@@WiltshireTutorials I use degreaser with a toothbrush, then I go over the engine with a wire cup/wheel to eliminate any rust/corrosion, then I wipe it down with brake clean and shop towels. After that, I wipe the surfaces down with isopropyl alcohol. There is plenty of surface area on the engines for the paint to adhere to. With PlastiCoat, there's no need for primer. It goes on in thin layers very nicely. By the third layer, it's basically bulletproof. Even with primer, the DupliColor is a nightmare to work with. In my entire career as a Mechanic, I have never had the kinds of issues with any other brand of paint.
I have to wonder if we're getting a different product here in Canada, than what you are getting there. I refuse to spend another dime on that stuff. It has literally cost me triple the price per can of it, just to deal with the product after it has been applied. And like I said earlier, I have used many cans, and different colours of it to no avail.
Seems like you definitely know what you're doing when it comes to the prepping stage. I too work in the automotive industry. I'm also Canadian. So, there is no difference on product between us lol. Granted, I've never used the paint on an actual engine before.

PCH and CPU WEREN'T painted so their temps are completely useless and you painted FETs which actually generate more heat than chokes and caps, and on top of that you didn't record FET temps :(
I removed the acrylic and paint on the FETS when I tested booted the motherboard. I realized I forgot to mask them off. Unfortunately, the stock Dell motherboard doesn't have a temperature probe for the FETS :(. I would have to resort to a thermal gun/camera, which I don't have.
