- Comedian Bassem Youssef says Hollywood has been “erasing” Egyptian people from productions “systematically” as “everybody” in the Netflix documentary series Cleopatra looks like they “came from West Africa” instead of Egypt.
“We are not allowed to tell our own history,” Mr Youssef told Sky News Australia host Piers Morgan.
“We as Egyptians are being called intruders and invaders in our own culture - this has been going on systematically.
“I don’t want to wake up one day and find the Museum of the African American Culture and History claiming the stolen Egyptian artefacts in the British museum to be theirs."

The backlash is legitimate.. When it's a documentary or docudrama then we need to keep history close, however when it's a movie drama based on people then the actors are generally chosen with the assistance of the person on whom the movie is based.
While I understand the irritation of the Egyptian guest, the real question here was only just touched on an not really answered. Netflix has decided to portray Cleopatra as black. Just about all historical evidence suggest she was 'Mediterranean' in appearance as her family was after all Greek. So she was not black. Are most people bothered she is portrayed as a black women - no. Morgan asked Owens would he be bothered if Nelson Mandela was played by a white actor - and this question is not answered. Basically, what is being defended is a hierarchy of victimhood. People lower down on the hierarchy can play people higher up but not the other way around. So, Johnny Depp can never play Nelson Mandela, but Denzel Washington could play Horatio Nelson.

Interestingly, during the Bourke and Wills expedition, the Whites had nothing but contempt for the natives, until they got into desperate circumstances and they had to rely on them for help. If their society was as advanced as some suggest, that period would have been much shorter, and introduced disease would have had a greater impact.

Yes, they are related to North Africans and peoples in the West of Asia...but consider this...Persians are also related...but Persians are their own ethnic group. DNA may be more similar. The only places they really didn't cover were the middle and the central west part, such as Angola. That said, they went as far south as Mozambique and as far west as Senegal, and of course, covered the whole north. The impact of Arab caliphates on Africa cannot be underestimated. Before Europeans came, they were the biggest, transcontinental rulers on African land. In fact, the name for the continent of Africa comes from Arabic! (Ifriquiya, an Arab name that might come from a local language). Even the Romans borrowed this name later to name the province of Africa in modern Libya and Tunisia. There is a lot to this. It's not a simple as: black...white...Arab. These factors were not as separated and distinct as people who are arguing this are trying to make it.
Genetically, what I've read online from seemingly trustworthy sources is that farmers in Anatolia migrated to today's northern Africa around 20,000 years ago. They became the Amazigh people, and racially black people might have been living there, or might not have, we don't know. What we do know is that the first fully modern humans who left Africa were brown-skinned and they inhabited Europe and Asia.

This multi-culturalism is reflected on tomb and temple painting. That said, the people of lower Egypt (near the Mediterranean) to be a lot lighter than the people of upper Egypt. It’s the same today.
As for Cleopatra, she would have been and looked Greek (with some Iranian ancestry). There is no way Ancient Greeks of Alexandria (a Greek city built by Greeks, for Greeks) would have accepted her as their ruler had she looked remotely un-Greek. Had she looked Brown or Black, this would have advertised that she was not the real deal, i.e. apart from not being nearly all Greek, she would have been related to domestic servants / non Greek concubine, etc.

The main issue in my opinion is that the producers and people featured in the documentary are actually claiming that cleopatra was BLACK.
I'm sure if Cleopatra was black, then the classical historian's, would have mentioned it at some point in their writing's. Egypt and North Africa do have their own separate culture to the rest of Africa this was the case in ancient times as well. When I think of North Africans, they look more Mediterranean to me, to be honest than black.

Getting it out of the way, Cleopatra was Greek, the Egyptians were Egyptian. Nobody was white or black.
I think the reason this is a bigger problem than before is because they are centering blackness as a theme of this docudrama. It's a key point in the marketing and presentation that Cleopatra and the Egyptians are being portrayed as black. They are also presenting it as that being how they are supposed to be, when nobody whether it be the court or Cleopatra herself were actually black.
No prior iteration of Cleopatra ever pushed that she or the other Egyptians were actually white. They just acted andeft it at acting. This version has explicitly stated it's trying to push the narrative that ancient Egyptians were all black. That's their goal. Heck this whole show is part of a series of documentaries on black queens.
