I understand what this gentleman is saying. There is, in America, a group of people who are going through all of our historical people and asking the question, “Were they black”? My question to them is, why don’t you praise and raise up the historical people in our country who were black? Why tear down the accomplishments of someone else if they don’t have a drop of black blood in them? In America, we are many races. We should always be one people appreciating all of our ancestors accomplishments. Instead of tearing down the statues of great men who don’t have that drop of black blood. You cannot raise yourself up by tearing someone else down.

Cleopatra’s heritage was Macedonian Greek. The last ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt from 51 BC- 30 BC. She was a descendant of Ptolemy I Soter a General in Alexander the Great’s army. After her death Egypt became a province of Rome. Anyone who believes a word that comes out of Hollywood is a either a fool or mentally ill. Basset amongst many other races are obviously tired of Hollywood’s version of the history of the world. I think it's worse than a movie it's been advertised as a documentary. Documentaries should be based in facts otherwise it is just a misrepresentation of history.

While I understand the irritation of the Egyptian guest, the real question here was only just touched on an not really answered. Netflix has decided to portray Cleopatra as black. Just about all historical evidence suggest she was 'Mediterranean' in appearance as her family was after all Greek. So she was not black. Are most people bothered she is portrayed as a black women - no. Morgan asked Owens would he be bothered if Nelson Mandela was played by a white actor - and this question is not answered. Basically, what is being defended is a hierarchy of victimhood. People lower down on the hierarchy can play people higher up but not the other way around. So, Johnny Depp can never play Nelson Mandela, but Denzel Washington could play Horatio Nelson.
Denzel DID play Macbeth. I love Denzel as an actor, & maybe it was brilliant, but I wouldn't know because I couldn't make myself watch it - just couldn't get past the casting .....
Exactly but something everyone has missed is the Actual Egyptian people who have a 7,000-year history have not yet had an opportunity to tell their story. Hollywood wont allow them. Imagine the documentaries that could be produced for the world to see if this crap didn't continue getting in the way.
A black woman playing the role is one thing, claiming that history to be theirs is another, the ancient Egyptians were not black and if there were any black people there, you can be your top dollar they were slaves
In any fictional movie anyone could play anything. In a documental movie, keep as much close to the truth to depict the truth. They want to make Cleopatra black that's why the movie has not been classified as fictional...To give black people a false powerful female leader ( have they played her marriage with her own brother?) without making the effort of teaching about a real powerful female leader .More money with less effort. @morality and justice working out your English is like working out the Rosetta stone. So in short you are claiming all Jews where Black Africans and that the Pyramids where built by Black Africans. 2 points, why does all the DNA evidence show what you say not to be the case. Also why was this Black African exception in Egypt , no other Black African civilisation comes close, where there are plenty of non Black African peers who built comparable civilisations to Egypt, and who eventually dominated Egypt. Did Black Africans also build Babylon, the Great Wall of China, the Empire State building. See here is your problem, you view has zero evidence, it's wishful thinking trying to appropriate the achievements of another more advanced culture. Christianity and Islam did takeover in Egypt, but they did that through conversion mainly, not replacement. Why are there still Middle eastern looking Coptic Christians in Egypt. Did Islam just wiped out the Black Egyptians and leave the non Black Christians around. Like any country that has had a new religion imposed on it, be it Indonesia, Europe, Korea , China , the people are not replaced they just changed religion over time. China has many Buddhists, Buddhism isn't a Chinese Religion, Korea has many Christians, yet those people are Ethnically Korean , not from the Levant or Italy
@morality and justice who is talking about Jews and the Pyramids, it's highly likely there where some Jews in the construction , the point being Ancient Egypt and Egyptians looked pretty much like modern ones. People's do not get replaced like that , it's expensive, time consuming and uneconomic. Your premise is that in the Islamic conquest of Egypt from the middle east, that they just either killed or exiled the majority of what is Egypt , that makes no sense, there is zero evidence for it, it didn't happen. Take the conversion of Nordic countries to Christianity, their ancestors worshiped the Nordic Religions, then over generations, they converted where born into Christianity. there was no mass extinction of believers of the old gods. N Africa has always had more in common with the Middle East, then it has with Sub Saharan Africa. just because they share the same continent, doesn't mean they are similar. Again this is wishful thinking of Afro Nationalists, who don't have any evidence and want to claim things that aren't even theres. Ask yourself when European colonisers reached Africa 1500+ years later, why was Sub Saharan Africa far less advanced than Ancient Egypt, where did the people who apparently made the Pyramids go, all that knowledge lost. Again explain the DNA results from all the mummies which confirm Egypt 3500 years ago to now has always been a nation of Mediterranean looking people
When Cleopatra was existed Greece never existed, Macedonia existed and she was the last Macedonias QUEEN And yes Greek people are dark skin and come from Egypt
The backlash is legitimate.. When it's a documentary or docudrama then we need to keep history close, however when it's a movie drama based on people then the actors are generally chosen with the assistance of the person on whom the movie is based.
Sounds like Australia...if it isn't about aboriginals, the history barely exists. Cleopatra was Greek...she was of the Ptolemy dynasty, and they were greek/Macedonian. They ruled Egypt because they conquered it, like the British conquered the aboriginals.
I wouldn’t go that far in saying the British conquered the Aborigines, definitely slaughtered and raped them but to this day they are a proud people who do their own thing and take shit from no one. It was explained to me a few years ago by an Aboriginal friend that ( and I quote)… “ that we have been fu……. over so much and for so long that there is nothing they can do to hurt us” . That truly sucks,
You’re correct. Aboriginal history is being rewritten so that you are not allowed to say they were nomads (which in their territories they were), or hunter gatherers (ditto). I really don’t know why this is such a pejorative as nothing wrong with nomads or hunter gathers. Interestingly, during the Bourke and Wills expedition, the Whites had nothing but contempt for the natives, until they got into desperate circumstances and they had to rely on them for help. Sadly it came too late for Bourke and Wills, but King survived because probably he was the first to appreciate native knowledge. But now we are being taught the indigenous people lived in large towns and were farmers. 😮

@@penguinvic9892 Apart from a couple of disproven self appointed experts, the larger problem is the Aboriginal agenda, linked to the voice. Certain academics and activists, linked to the ALP, are trying to create an image of a confederation of Aboriginal nation states, to bolster land rights claims and lay ground work for a treaty, with them as the heroes, and leaders. It doesn't wash when you examine the written records and correspondence of the early Europeans...there were two instances of a 'welcome' in the entire history of European interaction, and there was no indication either of those were welcome to country as we know it today. I agree with you that there seems to be some push to move away from the perception of a nomadic lifestyle and create a make believe advanced society. The reality is though, that the tribes could not sustain large numbers of people in their lands...their lifestyle simply couldn't sustain that. Hunting and gathering limits population, and the evidence shows that Aboriginal population was in decline for half a millenia before European contact. That research is validated by examination of Aboriginal travel routes, and more succinctly by the length of time it took cats and dogs to occupy Australia, which is around seventy years. If their society was as advanced as some suggest, that period would have been much shorter, and introduced disease would have had a greater impact.

The term Macedonia actually refers to the northern part of Greece where people had lighter skin. It does not refer to the Macedonia in the former Yugoslavia. Bottom line: Macedonians are Greeks, Greeks are not necessarily Macedonians.
The tombs of ancient Egypt have yielded golden collars and ivory bracelets, but another treasure - human DNA - has proved elusive. Now, scientists have captured sweeping genomic information from Egyptian mummies. It reveals that mummies were closely related to ancient Middle Easterners, hinting that northern Africans might have different genetic roots from people south of the Sahara desert.
Yes, they are related to North Africans and peoples in the West of Asia...but consider this...Persians are also related...but Persians are their own ethnic group. DNA may be more similar. It doesn't mean the people are THE SAME. It just means they are close. Secondly, Arabs covered nearly the ENTIRE continent of Africa, from the north to the south to the west. The only places they really didn't cover were the middle and the central west part, such as Angola. That said, they went as far south as Mozambique and as far west as Senegal, and of course, covered the whole north. The impact of Arab caliphates on Africa cannot be underestimated. Before Europeans came, they were the biggest, transcontinental rulers on African land. In fact, the name for the continent of Africa comes from Arabic! (Ifriquiya, an Arab name that might come from a local language). Even the Romans borrowed this name later to name the province of Africa in modern Libya and Tunisia. There is a lot to this. It's not a simple as: black...white...Arab. These factors were not as separated and distinct as people who are arguing this are trying to make it. Genetically, what I've read online from seemingly trustworthy sources is that farmers in Anatolia migrated to today's northern Africa around 20,000 years ago. They became the Amazigh people, and racially black people might have been living there, or might not have, we don't know. What we do know is that the first fully modern humans who left Africa were brown-skinned and they inhabited Europe and Asia.
Bassem knows exactly what he´s talking about... Cleopatra was Ptolomian descent and no black woman. And yes, the Pyramids of Giza were build by Farahos employes... not slaves. Til today anybody can see were their houses were situated in Giza. And some of that location is now modern Cairo.

Her appearance was never an issue. Do these people on the left just make things up as they go along? Seems that way....
The other problem with American media is when they think of an African they automatically think of a West African. Africa is big and diverse…not all Africans are dark black and have wide features. Even within West Africa there is diversity. Even some dark Africans have smaller/slimmer features than whites….this stereotyping of the African look is quite r*cist if you ask me.

Lets be real, Egypt today is not ethnically the same as ancient Egypt just like how America today is not the same as ancient America. Ancient Egyptians were not West African but they were very much black…more like how black North Africans e.g Sudanese/Somali look like. Very much undeniably black whether we like it or not. The arabs took over the land due to colonization. Cleopatra should be played by a greek lady. If anything Zendaya looks more like the modern day Egyptians, same skin tone, same features…
Cleopatra was Greek with ZERO African heritage.. Empires of the past like Roman and Greek empires controlled the whole Mediterranean , and other regions in the Middle East, Europe and Northern Africa. Roman and Greeks put their own people as leaders across the empire. Greeks and Romans are white Europeans. There are also white looking Arabs and Egyptians. At other times in history Arabs controlled the region. Theres no doubt Egypt's history is mostly from Arab culture, but that doesnt mean Arabs were always in charge. The history of the world is empires spreading then being crushed by other empires. Movies are not meant to be perfect representations of history, people will always have their biases. Egypt has a movie industry and there are Egyptian movies about Cleopatra. Movies from Arab/Islamic countries are full of overt propaganda and bias. Getting it out of the way, Cleopatra was Greek, the Egyptians were Egyptian. Nobody was white or black. I think the reason this is a bigger problem than before is because they are centering blackness as a theme of this docudrama. It's a key point in the marketing and presentation that Cleopatra and the Egyptians are being portrayed as black. They are also presenting it as that being how they are supposed to be, when nobody whether it be the court or Cleopatra herself were actually black. No prior iteration of Cleopatra ever pushed that she or the other Egyptians were actually white. They just acted andeft it at acting. This version has explicitly stated it's trying to push the narrative that ancient Egyptians were all black. That's their goal. Heck this whole show is part of a series of documentaries on black queens.
But can we all agree that Cleopatra was basically a royal whore, that she was the original baby mama? Babies by two different dudes 😂 both emperors. At least she had high taste.

This multi-culturalism is reflected on tomb and temple painting. That said, the people of lower Egypt (near the Mediterranean) to be a lot lighter than the people of upper Egypt. It’s the same today. As for Cleopatra, she would have been and looked Greek (with some Iranian ancestry). There is no way Ancient Greeks of Alexandria (a Greek city built by Greeks, for Greeks) would have accepted her as their ruler had she looked remotely un-Greek. Had she looked Brown or Black, this would have advertised that she was not the real deal, i.e. apart from not being nearly all Greek, she would have been related to domestic servants / non Greek concubine, etc. Okay, the ancient Greeks were elitist (read racist), but sorry to all Black people who would love to see Cleopatra as sub-Saharan queen … it’s all highly improbable !!

Cleopatra was of Greek origin. And before the genocidal Arab invasion, typical Egyptians, looked different and had a lighter skin tone, as those peoples descended from a north west European seed line, as seen when the DNA of individuals like King Tut were analysed. There was Nubian admixture of course, but the upper caste everywhere is typically lighter, thanks to higher IQ leading to economic advantage, ect. Anyway, Cleopatra was White and Greek, but culturally Greco-Egyptian and she would not have looked like either of the guests.
you are talking about the upper class of egypt, the commoners of egypt comes in all shades and looks no different than modern demographics of egypt today
genocidal invasion? That is absolutely false, the Arabs conquered thanks to the fact that they were converting the inhabitants of the conquered lands to Islam. It has already been proven that genetically the peoples prior to the invasion have not changed much. There has been mixing with the natives, but the Arabs were not enough to wipe out the original populations. That is why they managed to conquer so much territory. It is impossible that in such a short time a small population group could replace the entire population of northern Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. And that is something that is absolutely proven. The Arab dynasties became the ruling class of the territories they conquered, and many of the important leaders were natives. In my country, Spain, genetics indicate that only 4 to 7 percent of the population have African or Arab ancestry and we have documents describing the inhabitants of Morocco centuries before the Arabs arrived, and they are basically the same.

scientists have captured sweeping genomic information from Egyptian mummies. It reveals that mummies were closely related to ancient Middle Easterners, hinting that northern Africans might have different genetic roots from people south of the Sahara desert.
@Popos Zedan Not hinting, it's a fact in Egypt. Of course, we look different. Africa is massive. Indigenous people of all colours are similar to their closest surroundings. We're right next to Saudi Arabia, Tunis, Syria, and across the sea, its a short boat trip to Greece. Evidently, we're not going to turn out looking like the South and West Africans. It's a ridiculous notion.
He is, like Greeks its a constant issue that we do bring up in the courts and media quite often, but the British are not budging and the news won't show it how they say "Its ours, now go away."
Ancient Greek and Roman scholars left written records and physical descriptions of the people they saw in Egypt around 450 b.c. Well respected scholars among them Herodotus and Aristotle described them as dark skinned with kinky hair. European scholars were very aware before the 19th century of these texts and did not contest their writings. The so called founding father of Egyptology Jean-Francois Champollion, cracked the hieroglyphic code during the 1800's and stated that the original people had dark complexions and the recent populations were a result of intermingling with all the nations that conquered and dominated Egypt. The conquerors and colonizers used techniques to keep people from coming together. In the end people are culturally different , but they come from the same root AFRICA.
I'm glad nowadays people in the media start to talk about this. only American see people as black, white, and yellow. In the past, we have a problem with a missing white guy, bc the wife's describe him as a white guy, most people think it was a guy who has white skin, so they say it can't be the guy in the picture bc he's not white, he has dark skin tone(tan). There is a huge difference between Elizabeth Taylor and this unknown black actress. Firstly Cleopatra (1963) was cast with a hollywood movie stars that had a track record of selling movie tickets like Richard Burton, Rex Harrison and Elizabeth Taylor. Hollywood in the 50s and 60s wasn't making historically accurate dramas and used the English speaking actors avaliable to them which where mainly from north america and the UK. The Historical Cleopatra was Greek, so if you was to be the most historically accurate possible in the casting, you would hire a Greek woman but somewhere around the mediterranean would took acceptable.

It was explained to me a few years ago by an Aboriginal friend that ( and I quote)… “ that we have been fu……. over so much and for so long that there is nothing they can do to hurt us” .

Did he answer the question concerning Nelson Mandela?
Nope.
There's no ambiguity around Cleopatra's racial make up. She was Greek.
Most Hollywood actors have Middle Eastern backgrounds.
from a country that occupies Palestine? Noooo!
lol what? if you mean jews those are european converts to judaism not the actual jews from the middle east don't be ignorant
Egyptians are ignored in history
--- none of those other actors are....oh thats what hes saying
Try to find me one movie from the Islamic world that is critical of Islam. There are none because the producers would be killed, and any theatre that showed it would be burnt down.
scientists have captured sweeping genomic information from Egyptian mummies. It reveals that mummies were closely related to ancient Middle Easterners, hinting that northern Africans might have different genetic roots from people south of the Sahara desert.

@@poposzedan5554 How is that different to what I said? We were talking about Cleopatra who was a European.
Cleopatra was white, so who would look more like her? Liz Taylor, who was white, or the current actress who isn't?
Oh waaaa yet they bash The Israelites and make crap movies not from the bible !
Cleopatra was born in Egypt but she was from Greek decent. Egyptians are not black (maybe migrants are but not historically). Cleopatra was Not black.
Dumbest this about this whole debate is she likely 75% greek anyway, neither people should have a claim to her ethnicity
No evidence is offered that she was anything but Greek. Not quite knowing who her mother was is hardly credible evidence for her being Black.
@@penguinvic9892 yea and that's easily debunked just from looking at her nose
EGYPTIANS are not Caucasians. So some color in the skin is much better than pale Caucasian skin. Why Egyptians are so proud to be " white" ? Egyptians kings are a mix of Africans ( Sudan) , Arabs, Greek, Macedonia.
If Cleoptra has Macedonia origins must have on the other side Egyptian origins ( African, Arab, Egyptian) , otherwise she would be Greek/ Macedonian and not Egyptian!!!!
The truth will hurt
Yep we learn from the past not erase it.
Yes when somebody don’t have anything trying to steal somebody else culture it hurt .. after black people building the Egyptian culture they didn’t build anything else I think they forgot how to do it.. that’s why they is no culture in South Africa .. in 2023 end they still like Neanderthal ..
Were the Ancient Egyptians Arab though? The Arab people occupied Egypt in 639 AD after the fall of the Roman Empire? That is a fact.
only 17 percent of modern Egyptians are Arabs, while 68 percent of the indigenous population is from North Africa, four percent are from Jewish ancestry, three percent are of East African origins, another three percent from Asia Minor and three percent are South European.
Well said Yusuf 👏 bravo 👏
I mean she wasnt even Egyptian. She was Greek.
The main issue in my opinion is that the producers and people featured in the documentary are actually claiming that cleopatra was BLACK.
More racism...imagine that.
Hope they sue..
In movie world with America it has always been inferred in their movies that they are the whole world because when they do doomsday movies, and many others involving the word - world - they are inferring that only US exists.
Really?.. well nobody is forcing anybody to watch these movies.. and if people are upset that the movies are too much US centric then other countries are free to build their own hollywood and build their own cinema industry and then they can make whatever movies they like.. But most won't will they,? cause most movies from other countries are simply not as good or entertaining.. are they?
@@muzzsteam2869 Hollyweird has become woke trash in the last decade & is why most of their movies & TV shows have been flopping hard.
@@Hodaris_Darlin yes i agree.. it is woke trash.. but what does the rest of the world have to offer?? have you tried watching a bollywood movie?? i would rather go for a dental appointment
Hollywood totally collapsed after that sexual pervert producer got finally what he deserved after a lifetime of treating actresses like sex objects at his desire cause he had all the money for movies. No movies have been made since that matter and no one has replaced his capacity to make movies. Notice how there are no movies and actors are not really actors anymore.
I have seen movies from all over the world and every country has done this with their movies.
Who cares? Hollywood make Crap Movies these days anyway.
Egyptian‘s and Greeks do because this is their history and their culture and they don’t like it being altered or erased
At least she had high taste.
even ask black Africans and they tell you that this situation is ridiculous. My boys from Cameroon and he's laughing his ass off at this situation because these people have known Egyptians to be mixed race people and have multiple races theres for thousands of years.
They were never just black lol
So basically they’ve been lied to as well. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
DNA analysis shows that "Egyptians" are 68% North African. So yeah don't believe everything you hear.
@@The_Truth- I'm sure Africans know their own history better than westerners lmao
@@Lrxxx321 I know, that’s why I can speak on it.
@@The_Truth-I can't with you bro. You make no sense. I don't even think you read my full comment. I literally said they were never just black meaning it has always been mixed with different kinds of people.
Cleopatra was Greek.
Fighting racism with racism makes everyone racist. Actors act. Ignorant ignore. We view. Are you not entertained?
Yes, but this is being billed as a documentary.
What racism they are fighting, I'm from north Africa (Tunisia), We didn't do anything to these people, We don't know them and we don't want to, we share nothing with these people culturally or historically.
The Carthaginian were not black
The Moors were not black
The Egyptians were not black
Do you want to know who is actually black ? The people who enslaved each others and sold their "sisters and brothers" to the Arabs and to the Europeans for a cheap price, that's your history, you can talk about it as much as you want, just leave us alone you jealous haters.
@@noone3367 I agree with you, with one small exception. Ancient Egypt, at times in its history, covered a great deal of Sudan, which is Black by any standards.
@@penguinvic9892 Any sane person knows that Cleopatra wasn't black and north Africans aren't black, I think it is an insult to all of north Africa to even argue about these facts ! so I won't, we don't need to prove anything to thieves !
The real problem has nothing to do with history, these people have an inferiority complex and a severe "white man complex", period.
cleopatra was Greek, no African descent, no dark skin.
Do you know if the remake or biopic of John Wayne movies will be played as a black person?
Lol!!
Careful here. John Wayne played Genghis Khan if my memory serves me well.😊
She was Greek... And a bit Syrian... And maybe Persian... But not Black. There's nothing wrong with being black. And there's plenty of wonderful black historical characters to explore. But this is just colonialism in another light.
It stops at historical accuracy.
I couldn’t tell if the person on the right was man or woman until they spoke. Its pretty clear why they like ambiguity.
Nope artifacts and temples are black
There were no genocides by Arabs, lol.
genocidal invasion?
Interesting, reading your post and the replies, I'll be the first to admit, that I'm out of my depth here, but it's still interesting, none the less.
Cleopatra was the daughter of Ptolémée a greek general. There is a difference between the best actress getting the job and choosing a black actress
Those Arabs are lying. And last checked, Arabia is not in Africa. 😂
Hollywood has no Egyptian actress is left apparently.
Plus the opening scene of this “documentary” a black historian woman says that Cleopatra is black - confusing.
It's almost as if Egyptians know their own history the best! Let Egyptians tell their own history.
As an African its sad .America is in chaos don't dictate peoples identity there should get an Egyptian to play the part another network must redo this documentary woke culture should be kept in the west Africans are living in peace but the woke ideology is being forced here
bassem nailed it
A very white cast? They look very Arabic. Dude clearly has a strong bias there you can tell by the look he was giving at the end of the video. Ethnically she was Greek Macedonian both of whom are ethnically closer to the middle eastern Coptic people. Not white which is immediately what dude went for.
Now the Jews were black, Jesus was black, Santa Claus, anyone of any significance was black, nothing new here.
You could have added Beethoven, too. One of his later piano sonatas is definitely jazz. 😅.
Jews can be any race, but are mostly white, Jesus was Middle Eastern, Santa Claus was white, Beethoven was Caucasian
Figures that a black gay guy would think that it's fine
This is humiliation for egyp people. I agree with Bassem Yousef. Why neflix and west make this distorsion, they sentimen with egyp, If you take it further, does this also mean insulting Hagar, Ishmael and the Prophet Muhammad as well as all Arab and Egyptian descendants? Not only insulting them but also African people. Netflix seeks opinions from public controversy and lies.
Okay, let a modern-day Egyptian play as Nelson Mandela and call it a documentary! Annnnd say it's very possible he was an Arab invader. Exactly! Point made.
And then you read history and find out Arabians never invaded Egypt but Egypt invited them…
@Jack John I am Egyptian from actual Egypt 🇪🇬 birth certificate Egyptian and Kemet. And myself and my family's lineage is all Egyptian. And we have these people calling us Arab invaders of our own country lol a civilisation, history, and ancestry spanning 7,000 years. That's why I made the above comment. So your comment was in support of Egypt 🇪🇬 and my argument. Thank you.

You can care about more than one thing at the same time
Ancient Greek and Roman scholars left written records and physical descriptions of the people they saw in Egypt around 450 b.c. In the end people are culturally different , but they come from the same root AFRICA.
it's just a typical cheap entertainment film based on past history to make monies, not accuracy.
They think the wife post wrong picture. we don't relate everything to race. I can't talk about racism with my friends, they will never understand.
Bravo Bassem youssef, defendre ta civilisation riche et ancestrale face à 1 pays qui a 200 ans d'histoire😂 et qui s amuse à récrire l' histoire a sa guise.
I just watched Ten Commandments and it doesn’t portray the Israelites building the pyramids.
She was Greek 😂
